It's time to grapple with the human rights issues ensuing in Afghanistan. To guide us in this important conversation are podcast alums Drs. Ayesha & Dean Sherzai. For those new to the show, ‘Roll On' is typically our opportunity to shift focus from my traditional fare of evergreen conversations to instead hone in on matters of contemporaneous, time-sensitive interest.Today we do just that, but with a twist, spending the entire episode grappling with the very grave plight faced by the 18 million women in Afghanistan in the wake of the United States departure. Breaking down the grip of Taliban rule, this is an exploration and round table discussion led by Team Sherzai.Experts on brain health, Alzheimer's, and neurodegenerative diseases, Drs. Sherzai have twice graced this show for deep dives on maintaining and optimizing cognitive function. But what most don't know is that Dean & Ayesha have considerable experience with Afghanistan. In 2003 Dean was appointed the Deputy Minister of Health by President Karzai, creating the most successful post-conflict healthcare system with women's empowerment at its core. Ayesha founded the Social Welfare Society for Afghan Refugees in medical school, volunteered with Doctors Without Borders' in Afghanistan during her medical training, and co-founded the Afghan Health Initiative in order to empower the Afghan diaspora with their own health. My intention for this conversation is less political—we aren't here to necessarily debate the political advisability of the U.S. withdrawal as much as the incomprehensibly botched manner in which we withdrew—and the downstream human rights implications of Afghan women in particular.Other specific topics discussed include:The history of women's rights in Afghanistan;using healthcare as a catalyst for women's empowerment;a breakdown of the imperative of the Taliban and how it functions;the role that fear plays in female oppression;what we can be done now to aid Afghan women; andhow to support celebrated female artists, scientists, politicians & leaders in Afghanistan. To read more and listen click here. I learned the value of connection and correction when my daughter was 16.  I had been reading John Maxwell's books for a long time. Over the years, I had come across one of his books entitled Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn. Eventually, I also found the teen version of that book and decided to buy it.  Just a few months after buying that book, my daughter got into some trouble. As a result, I decided to give her two choices: she could lose her phone for a month or read the book and write a summary of each chapter, what she learned from it, and how she applied it.  She decided to read the book. Through this experience of walking and talking with my daughter as she went through this book, we both matured. The true meaning of “sometimes you win, sometimes you learn” began to sink in. Today, I am sharing some of the top lessons from this book and how they affected my relationship with my daughter.  Whether you're a parent or not, this episode will be pure gold for you. I'm going to be touching on lessons that will help you improve all of your relationships and your entire life. Learn from the junky mistakes I've made as a parent and in my relationship world. Take these lessons that have served me and my clients well and allow them to serve you too. In this episode, you will hear: The top four lessons from Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn. What to ask ourselves when we want to grow in an area. The importance of asking questions in our relationships. Steps for connecting with people. Why learning from loss is the key. How to apply the concept of connections and corrections. Subscribe and Review Please share this podcast with your friends and family. Many of us are self-proclaimed control freaks. We like for things to be within our grasp and we want to do what we want, when we want. However, the truth is that we don't have any ultimate control. There will come a point when bad things happen and nothing we do about them can make a difference.  This is where surrender comes in. Kute Blackson had to come to grips with his lack of control when his mom was diagnosed with cancer. After doing everything he could to help her heal for months, he eventually realized all there was left to do was surrender. As a result, he wrote his book The Magic of Surrender. That is what we are discussing today. I brought Kute onto the show to talk all about his personal journey towards surrender and why this is such an important topic in our world.  Kute had some true gold nuggets to share with us so tune in to hear them for yourself and learn the “magic” of surrender! In this episode, you will hear: How Kute's book came to be. The significance of surrender in Kute's life. How surrendering lets us tap into our true greatness and is the key to freedom. Practical steps to surrendering. How surrender is hardwired into us. The difference between acceptance and surrender. The importance of grieving when we surrender. How we need to shift our perspective on life. Why we should stop asking, “What do I want?” Small steps to take if you want to change the world. Thank you for listening to the Success is a Choice podcast network. This week is the Open Championship at Royal St. George's Golf Club in England. It is the last major of the PGA season. It also marks the 18th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship at this same course. The open championship rotates courses each year and Royal St. George's has only hosted the Open Championship one time since that Curtis win back in 2003. When Ben Curtis hoisted the claret jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. Anyway, this was an interesting episode that we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since the Open Championship returns to the site of this 300-to-1 longshot Ben Curtis shocking the world. Lastly, I am biased when it comes to Ben Curtis because he is doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org.    Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of the prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017.  He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio. Success in all forms demands mental fortitude—a capacity honed through consistently placing yourself beyond comfortable confines. When practiced with daily rigor, an increasingly sturdy mindset becomes a superpower—and the foundation for the purpose-driven life you aspire to inhabit.Welcome to another edition of ‘Roll On', wherein myself and master of pen, keyboard and dictaphone Adam Skolnick explore the concept of mental fortitude in contexts athletic and political through the lives of two individuals, James Lawrence (aka the ‘Iron Cowboy') and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.Beyond RRP hype-man duties, Adam Skolnick is an activist and journalist best known as David Goggins' Can't Hurt Me, co-author. He writes about adventure sports, environmental issues, and civil rights for The New York Times, Outside, ESPN, BBC, and Men's Health. He is the author of One Breath and is currently awash in his umpteenth draft of an untitled novel—slowly losing his mind in the process. This episode unfurls in a fashion unique. The balance of today's discussion focuses on James Lawrence—the undisputed king of mental fortitude wrought in physical form—and his mind-bending completion of 101 iron-distance triathlons in 100 days.In addition, we cover a few notable stories, including The Woman Who Fell 2 Miles To Earth, The Great Lakes Jumper and The Great Pacific Race. We also discuss the recent Supreme Court decision backing payments to NCAA student-athletes, wherein I go on a tear against the college-industrial complex. It is here that we depart from standard Roll On protocol and instead segue into my conversation with a man notable for a very different kind of mental fortitude, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. The most accomplished runner currently holding elected office (he's a 2:16 marathoner!), it's an exploration of the demands, discipline and disposition required to lead a fractured city through the treacherous terrain of social upheaval in the wake of George Floyd's murder. To read more click here. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Final Thought: this episode marks the one-year anniversary of ‘Roll On' (and on-air bromance with Adam Skolnick). What started as an experimental but intentional response to the many historic moments that greeted us in 2020 has turned into an important RRP mainstay—and a success due in no small part to the incredible work that Adam has and continues to bring to the series. You may have a bookkeeper but once they hand you some numbers, you don't know what to do with them.  This is where Stephanie comes in. She takes those numbers, turns them into an analysis, and turns that into information. If you're looking for a lightbulb moment in your business, you don't want to miss this conversation with Stephanie. She is teaching us how to understand our numbers and how they connect to the lightbulb moments we all need and the impact we all want to make. Stephanie speaks my language and I know she'll speak yours too. Tune in now to hear it all from her. In this episode, you will hear: Stephanie's background with nonprofits. Her lightbulb moment. How she helps her clients make an impact on the world. How her business got started. Why we need to master our money to make an impact.  Why we need to reframe our terms around finances. Dan Hughes retired yesterday from the Seattle Storm. He has had a great career coaching and is now going to focus on the USA Women's Basketball Team. This was one of my favorite episodes when it first aired and so I wanted to release it again with the news of his retirement. Click here for the ESPN article about his retirement.   ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: Dan Hughes is the head coach of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. In just his first year with the Storm, he helped lead them to the 2018 WNBA Championship. Nobody has coached more games in the WNBA than Hughes. He has also coached both men and women at various college levels.  In today’s episode, we discuss: Coming out of retirement to coach the Storm to a championship. What makes Gregg Popovich so good as a coach. How to be a great assistant. Creating a championship culture quickly. His non-traditional coaching journey and how it helped him be a better coach.
