A conversation between Jim and Marcus about how their classrooms came to a close to finish the school year as well as some “teacher takeaways” from the year overall as they look forward. Though at times it dips into the weeds of HS English pedagogy and particulars, this episode tries to dive into the thinking and reflection of two different teachers about how to best “end” a classroom community—and then moves into a broader reflection on wins from the year that they will try to carry into the next school year. (After a much-needed summer break, of course.)Thanks to: Alberto Lugo, one of Jim's former students, for writing and recording original intro music; Tom Csatari for allowing us to use his band's recording of “Woodstock” from their 2020 album, Garden; and Courtney Milavec for graphic design.Find Tom's work at uncivilizedtom.com, and on Instagram @banduncivilized.Find Alberto's work at djsynchro.weebly.com, and on Instagram @djsynchro. As always, you can email thoughts and feedback to thebrokencopier@substack.com.Thanks for listening! Proud Rural Teacher
EVERYONE Should be Paying Attention to Public School Funding in Wisconsin -- PRTP28

So today's episode is a little different for me in that, even though I've already done the interview, I still feel I have a lot to learn about funding for public schools in Wisconsin. Back in the day, when I was teaching HS English, I didn't think much at all about school funding. I had, for the most part, as far as I knew, what I needed to do my job. I certainly did not think about the bigger picture or how financial decisions made at the state level, might impact public education. I don't think my experience is unusual. As the years have passed, I've grown to understand that funding public education is certainly a challenge that's deeply impacting our rural schools. So in this episode, I'm honestly just asking questions about funding for public schools in Wisconsin. To kick off National Public Schools week, I'm introducing you to the executive director of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, Heather DuBois Bourenane. The interview itself is actually in two parts. Part 1 was just days before the Governor of Wisconsin, Tony Evers, released his proposed budget, and Part 2 was just days after. Heather will explain how funding in Wisconsin impacts public schools and how the Wisconsin Public Education Network is a strong advocate for public schools. If you're new to learning about how public schools in Wisconsin are funded, this conversation will, hopefully, stir your mind to learn more. Be sure to check out the show notes for relevant links.  Our conversation about testing was so robust that we broke it into two parts. Did you miss the first part of "Assess the Test"? Listen to it here. The impact standardized testing has on students, educators and school communities extends long beyond test day.In Part II of Assess the Test, we move beyond talking about the tests themselves and discuss the overall accountability system.Join us for this exploration of how 20 years of "accountability" in Florida have drained the joy out of teaching and learning. Thank you for joining our lively conversations with support professionals, parents and students as they share issues that matter most in our public schools. Here are your hosts, Tina Dunbar and Luke Flynt.Luke Flynt, Host: Welcome to another episode of Educating from the Heart. I am Luke Flynt, along with my cohost, Tina Dunbar. And Tina, you know, schools are the place where a childhood happens, where students get to explore their creativity, learn to think critically and develop the skills they will need to succeed in life and in the workplace. Or at least that's what they should be.Tina Dunbar, Host: You're so right, Luke. And in our last episode, we chatted with four educators about Florida's transition away from the FSA to a new testing system. While many educators are excited about the shift, many also shared their concern that this might be more of the same, a new name without major changes to the test itself. In the second part of our conversation, we'll focus less on the tests themselves and more on the overall accountability system. Our educators even address how testing has transformed our schools from places of joy and creativity to a place filled with anxiety due to the intense focus on standardized assessments. You know, Luke, you are so right. Life is so much more than knowing the right answers to a series of multiple-choice questions.Luke: It absolutely is. There is so much about our students that cannot be measured but is still very important to know. Part two of Assessing the Test begins with Bethany Koch sharing her love for English and how it can enrich the lives of all students. But she also shares the reality that Florida's fixation on testing has had in her classroom, as well as the classroom of many of her colleagues, where the love for teaching and learning has been replaced with dread.Bethany Koch, HS English teacher: I think one of the most heartbreaking, and someone that loves English, right? Like I went into this because I love English. I love books. But one of the most heartbreaking consequences of the FSA is that it is effectively killing some of the things that students and teachers love about our subject. We've seen the loss of fiction and poetry. And now our new standards are a little bit better on that...

A Breakthrough Approach to Boys HS English with Rabbi Mordechai Weissmann

Chinuch 2.0

For years, boys high school english in most yeshivas has been poor to non-existent, or even eliminated entirely, because of lack of interest from both the boys themselves and the hanhala. Of course, this effects our boys' marketability in the job market when it is time to go out and earn a living. Many boys leave high school without learning the basic skills needed to land a job, such as writing, speaking, business math, etc. Rabbi Mordechai Weissmann started The Machon as a teacher in a Baltimore high school to directly address this problem. Because the current system wasn't working, he didn't try to fix it. Instead, he eliminated the existing method and built an entirely new method of teaching boys the critical business and life skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Amazingly, the boys actually enjoy their english studies now, and the curriculum is even approved by state boards as a valid high school education. Listen to how this revolutionary program works - and how you can help. SYS Presents: Adventures in Online Education

Ashley White is a talented educator and leader. She has worked as a brick and mortar teacher and online teacher during her 13 year career thus far. She holds her reading endorsement in Oregon and currently teaches high school English. She's also an instructional coach dedicated to equitable education.  Today on the show we learn how the flipped classroom model (FCM) works and why it benefits our students. My guest, Ashley White, will give us practical guidance on how to flip our classes to increase equity and engagement for all our students. She'll teach us how to create a weekly starter video (WSV) and how to engage students actively and collaboratively in live class sessions. She'll make a great case for the flipped class model being a sound practice, and not a fad or educational jargon. It's a way to make our classes more meaningful, interactive and fun! (https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Interview-with-Lisa-Johnson.jpg) Quotables You need that piece of self-care. Yes you need to be authentic but it is sometimes hard to be authentic when you are not really understanding who you are and what you value and where you want to go in education and what you want to do with the content and your students. I think you should be open to learn from anybody who inspires you. What I try and do is figure out what are my values, what are my goals, what do I want to learn? Because I don’t think you can stay current in everything, there is not really a way to do that. A lot of times kids just need to know how to be good human beings and to deal with all of these things in the current world that is just thrust upon them. Modeling how we handle situations is really important. Stamp of Approval Creatively Productive: Essential Skills for Tackling Time Wasters, Clearing the Clutter, and Succeeding in School—and Life!
