Van Badham and Ben Davison shine on a spotlight on the attempts by corporate giants BHP, Qantas and Doordash to keep the labour hire, forced casualisation and sham contracting loopholes open at this week's senate committee hearings. Van lays out what is wrong with capitalism in Australia and why being in your union, join at australianunions.org.au/wow, has never been more important with over $9,000,000,000 that could become wages if the loopholes close. Jason Clare, federal Education Minister, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today launched a $10M campaign to recruit more teachers.  Ben and Van discuss why its a good start but that getting the 98% of public schools that are currently underfunded up to the minimum standard will do more to address the workload, wage and classroom issues that are creating teacher shortages.  You can send the PM a postcard at https://www.foreverychild.au/postcard to show your support for every child being able to access a quality public education. Albo had a busy day as he also joined Health Minister Mark Butler to announce a boost to the Medicare bulk billing incentive.  The tripled incentive will help 11,600,000 Australians get better access to bulk billing doctors. Van and Ben discuss why they focus on these core material stories that impact millions of working people when so much of the media is now dominated by culture war issues. New Education Minister Jason Clare is travelling the country taking soundings in the education sector. This, he says, is “the best way to get across this big, vast portfolio that stretches from the education of our youngest children right through to the incredible work our brilliant postgraduate people are doing in our universities. "What am I hearing? What am I learning? I get the impression that a lot of people are desperate for re-engagement with the government.” Outlining his plans for an Australian Universities Accord, Clare says there's a desire for the government “to work with our universities, not just our vice-chancellors, but everybody who works in our universities and harness all of the skills and expertise that sit within our universities. I don't think we do enough of that.” One of Clare's main imperatives is to address equity issues. “It's in our collective interest as a country to make sure that more people – wherever they live, whether their skin is black or white, whether their parents are rich or poor – get access to university, and when they get there that they stay there and get a qualification.” He strongly argues that “there's more work we need to do in helping young people get access to university. "I'm conscious […] that all the answers don't lie at the front door of the university. The work that we do long before someone is old enough to go to university – that's critical here. But universities can help answer this question too. What are the things we do from the age a child is born and until they're five, that set them up for success? Because if we narrow the gap in opportunity there, the impact will be enormous come university.” The COVID pandemic has had a major impact on Australia's international education program. “International education was crushed by the pandemic - when the borders shut, that shut out students.” Australia's international education program is “an incredible national asset, extraordinarily important for the Australian economy. Before the pandemic [it was] something like $40 billion. [It's] now about half that. We've got to rebuild it. It's important not just because of the money it makes us, but because of the goodwill that it provides for us.” There is currently a “backlog of visa applications. International students [are] hungry to get back to study here in Australia, particularly ahead of semester two. And there's work that we need to do there to assist in that processing task.” One of the most pressing issues in education is the teacher shortage, which includes the challenge of retention, “It's about what we do to encourage people to stay being teachers. In all of the conversations I've had with educators, they've made this point to me time and time again - that people are feeling burnt out mid-career and that they're hanging up the boots and leaving teaching. We're expecting the shortage of teachers to get worse and worse in the years ahead. Something like 4,000 teachers short of what we need by 2025.”

Anthony Albanese has stumbled over details of one of his party's major policies before an adviser handed him notes in the middle of a press conference. The Opposition Leader – who on the first day of the campaign came under fire for not knowing the unemployment figure and official cash rate – faced a barrage of questions in Sydney on Thursday over Labor's National Disability Insurance Scheme policy.Instead of providing a clear answer about the six parts of the plan, Mr Albanese stuttered, saying what Labor would do “was outlined by Bill Shorten”.“But Mr Albanese, what are the six points?” he was asked. He stuttered again before responding: “We will put people at the centre of the NDIS”.Journalists threw further questions about it, including “what is the policy?” and “do you not know what it is?” which he dodged until towards the end of the press conference. After being handed the policy on a piece of paper by an adviser, he looked down at his notes and detailed the six points.Another journalist went on to call him out for bringing in shadow ministers.“We find it often in the last week or so in the campaign that when you are stumbling on an answer, for example, you bring in your shadow ministers or you refer to them immediately. Is that part of the strategy in order to not see the sort of gaffes we saw on day one, or the gaffe we've seen today where you don't know your own policy?” Sky News journalist Trudy McIntosh asked.Mr Albanese immediately hit back, responding: “That's not right”.“I'm captain of a team. I'm proud of the team that we have,” he said.Scott Morrison wouldn't rule out making future cuts to NDIS funding when asked about the matter earlier on Thursday. The Prime Minister avoided directly answering whether he would rule out cuts to aged care, health care and the NDIS if the Coalition is re-elected to government.Pressed on whether he would commit to fully funding the NDIS given it is on a projected pathway to costing an annual $60bn per year by the end of the decade, Mr Morrison said: “We always run our programs responsibly”.Earlier, Mr Albanese hit back at “nonsense” criticism from Today Show host Allison Langdon who accused him of not knowing key details and slammed him for handballing questions to his shadow ministers.Mr Albanese went on to accuse Langdon of reading straight from Liberal Party notes in an attempt to deflect the criticism.Langdon opened the bruising interview by asking: “Do you think the Australian people think you're up to it?”“I ask that question because I've noticed on several occasions you hand over economic questions to someone else,” she continued, listing examples of times Mr Albanese deflected to shadow ministers like Jim Chalmers, Jason Clare and Tony Burke.“Why don't you know the answers?” she went on to ask.Mr Albanese hit back, saying: “I do, Ally. I'm here … No one to hand over to”“This is one of the most bizarre things I've seen,” he said.Langdon said that unlike Mr Albanese, Prime Minister Scott Morrison doesn't “hand over to anyone during the campaign”.Mr Albanese responded by taking aim at the “internal chaos and division” of the Liberal party.“You do continually, except Scott Morrison can't appear with Josh Frydenberg because Josh Frydenberg doesn't want to be in the same frame as him, because the voters of Kooyong regard Scott Morrison as toxic,” Mr Albanese said.Langdon kept pressing, saying: “The question is, though, you want to be the next Prime Minister. You want to run the country – shouldn't you be across your briefs?”Mr Albanese slammed Langdon's “absurdity”.“Stop reading from the Liberal Party notes that they send through to people all of the time, Ally,” he said.“This is just an absurdity. I do (know the answers).”Langdon pushed again: “I think your problem is that after the stumble week one when you didn't know the cash rate or unemployment rate, any time you do defer it suggests you don't know”.“That's nonsense Ally,” Mr Albanese res...

Labor says its proposed housing equity scheme will help 10,000 first homebuyers enter the property market. Shadow Housing Minister Jason Clare is predicting that the policy will make money for tax-payers, as the government will reap any capital gains from rising property values.

The Liberal Party is bracing for the Reserve Bank's decision on interest rates this Tuesday as two new opinion polls suggest time is running out for Scott Morrison to secure another miracle election victory.According to the latest Newspoll, Labor has maintained a two-party-preferred vote lead of 53-47.If replicated on election day this would see Labor swept to government with a majority and Scott Morrison would lose 10 seats. All eyes are now on Reserve Bank Governor Philip Lowe and the RBA board which will announce this week whether it's preparing to announce the first election rate hike since Kevin Rudd was swept to victory in 2007.The Reserve Bank hasn't raised its official cash rate target for more than a decade which means thousands of mortgage holders have no adult experience of what a rate rise looks like.Last month, the RBA kept the cash rate steady at 0.1 per cent but economists warned a hike could happen as soon as next month. The central bank's last rate rise was 25 basis points in November 2010, which took the cash rate target to 4.75 per cent.Since that date, the RBA has either kept rates steady or cut them – for 12 years. But inflation rising – the biggest indicator of the cost of living – that's all about to change. As the Labor Party launched its campaign in Perth with the theme that “Australians deserve better”, it was picked up by campaign spokesman Jason Clare who accused the Prime Minister of letting down voters.“Interest rate rises are knocking on the door. Life is getting harder. Not easier,'' he said.“And what did Scott Morrison say this week? ‘it's not my fault! It's not my job'. How many times have you heard that? You deserve better than that.”An exclusive Newspoll conducted for The Australian has found Labor's primary vote lifted to 38 per cent, after going wobbly after Mr Albanese's campaign stumbles.Popular support for the Coalition is steady at 36 per cent.According to the Resolve Political monitor commissioned by Nine Newspapers, Labor's primary vote is steady at 34 per cent. That's not much higher than the result Bill Shorten secured when he managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the 2019 election. However, as result of the Greens polling a whopping 15 per cent according to the Resolve Research, it estimates that Labor is on track for victory with a two-party preferred result of 54-46 in the ALP's favour. It's the first time the Nine newspapers Resolve poll has published a two-party preferred result since they paused polling operations and then moved to primary vote only polls in the wake of controversy over the reliability of polls in 2019.The poll suggests support for the Coalition has dropped from 35 to 33 per cent. Labor is on a primary vote of 34 per cent.Around one in three voters are putting their vote with the Greens, in independent or minor parties such as One Nation and Clive Palmer's United Australia Party. The exclusive survey, conducted by Resolve Strategic for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, also shows the Greens increased their primary vote from 11 to 15 per cent – a figure that generated some scepticism among other pollsters.Pauline Hanson's One Nation and Clive Palmer's United Australia Party rose from 4 to 5 per cent each.- by Samantha Maiden, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
