Based on the 1997 novel, “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror” by Steve Altan, this film was directed by Jon Turtletaub and stars Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Li Bingbing, Page Kennedy, Ruby Rose, Rainn Wilson & Winston Chao. After a deep water expedition of the Mariana Trench goes very wrong, a group of scientists are horrified to learn that a 75 foot “Megalodon” shark has escaped the trench and is headed for populated waters in the Pacific Ocean. The film rights were originally bought by Disney shorty after the novel was published but after years of development hell, the rights were then acquired by Warner Bros. and plans for a feature film were announced in 2013.

We were very fortunate to have the amazing and prolific Film Director, Jon Turteltaub, talk with us. He was a senior when we were freshmen at Beverly High. He got his first big break directing 3 Ninjas, which led to getting Cool Runnings. Then he went on to direct Phenomenon with John Travolta, the Kid with Bruce Willis and the National Treasure films with his old classmate Nicolas Cage. That's just naming a few of his movies. He also Produces and Directs TV shows such as Jericho. He gives us all the inside scoop on being a director from BH and we also discuss his father who was a legendary writer on the Carol Burnette Show, Sanford and Son and What's Happening. We also get into some of the humanitarian efforts he does to give back. He's got great stories about his career, working with Nicolas Cage, and even a story about Tom Hanks. Please Subscribe if you like what we're doing (or even if you don't) and give us a rating (only if you like us) and talk to us on Facebook or Instagram and most importantly share the podcast with two friends. This week marks the first week of our MayGay Shark month here on Slashers Podcast! Today we kick off this month with our dear friend Micah from Damn That's Scary podcast to discuss 2018's The Meg. If you all recall, or were like Ade and Micah thinking this movie came out like a year ago, this 2018 film centers around a giant Megalodon shark and the people it picks off. It was directed by Jon Turtletaub, who you may know directed classics like National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas. The film is loosely based on the novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, written by Steve Alten. It stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis. There is currently a sequel in development and should be released by August of next year, but until then, listen in to all of the juicy details of this week's episode, and feel free to chime in if there are any other shark horror flicks you'd like us to cover. Even if you haven't seen the film, you know the line “I'm gonna steal the Declaration of Independence.” It's a whirlwind film full of hidden treasure, the Knights Templar, Free Masons, our Founding Fathers, and is probably one of, if not the most accessible Nicholas Cage film. What are your thoughts on the film? Happy New Year! We're ringing in the new year with a sequel! Back in August 2020 we chatted with Karen and Janet about Face/Off and Con Air and all the Cagey Cageness of the one and only Nicolas Cage and the "Summer of Cage." This month, we're talking about Neil LaBute's less than stellar remake of The Wicker Man and Jon Turtletaub's ode to the puzzling genius of the Founding Fathers, National Treasure. What connects these two movies beyond being Nicolas Cage mid 2000s paychecks? Cults and Secret Societies! (Is there a difference? You tell us!) One is about a cult of women on an island in the Pacific Northwest. The other centers on secret societies like the Free Masons and has a certain culty devotion to the legends of the Found Fathers of the United States. Karen Wang is an award-winning writer, director, and producer of films. She has served regularly on the juries and curation teams of a number of screenwriting competitions and film incubator programs over the past fifteen years, while her own narrative work has been featured at festivals throughout the United States and Europe. Put your hockey masks on and get your chainsaws revved up, things are gonna get slasher-y this week!! We watched the 2009 single-season murder mystery, Harper’s Island! Who wouldn’t want to set their wedding in the isolated location where a violent serial killer had chopped up their friends and family only a few short years prior?! It’s show that tests the limit of how many characters can be crammed into a single plot! It’s a horror show that takes music cues right out of teen dramas. It’s a show that… we actually liked?? Dun dun dunnnnn!! We also debate whether Robin Hood is a serial killer, flex our boat term knowledge, discuss the fabulous career of director Jon Turtletaub and sing the classic tune “Let’s All Get a Boat.” Plus Morgan declares her desire to “rebirth” John Mulaney, her imprinted memories of The Man in the Iron Mask, and naming her favorite monkey movies. Meanwhile Mike explains why Dawson’s Creek is awesome, remembers an old Carl's Jr commercial in disturbing detail, and admits he has no idea how much diamonds cost! A that and so much… gore! Conor and Eric detail their most anticipated movies of 2018. Most Anticipated Movies: (10:20 mark) Trivia: (39:00 mark) Most Anticipated: Apostle - (Dir. Gareth Evans, Star. Dan Stevens, Michael Sheen and Lucy Boynton (Sing Street) - A man attempts to rescue his sister after she's been kidnapped by a religious cult. Release: 2018 Hold the Dark - (Dir. Jeremy Saulnier, Star. Alexander Skarsgård, Jeffrey Wright, Riley Keough) - After three children are killed by wolves, a writer is hired by the parents of a missing six-year-old boy to track down and locate their son in the Alaskan wilderness. Release: June 1 on Netflix Parasite - (Dir. Joon-ho Bong, Star. Kang-ho Song) A man is infected with a parasite that changes his world in unforeseen ways. Pros: Joon-ho Bong and Kang-ho Song reunite for the first time since Snowpiercer Release: 2018 (If I’m being honest, I highly doubt it will be out this year) The Predator - (Dir. Shane Black, has one of the strangest casts: Tom Jane, Keegan Michael Key, the little kid from the room (Jacob Tremblay) (Trevante Rhodes (grown up Chiron in Moonlight) Alfie Allen (aka Theon Greyjoy) Yvonne Stahovski, Edward James Olmos and Jake Busey) - A sequel of the 1987 sci-fi film "Predator" Pros: Tom Jane. Cons: There might be some non Tom Jane scenes. Release: September 14 The Meg (Dir. Jon Turtletaub (famed director of National Treasure), Star. Jason Statham, Rainn Wilson, going hard after the Chinese market with BingBing Li, Ruby Rose and Cliff Curtis) - After escaping an attack by what he claims was by a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible. Pros: Everything. Cons: None. I can’t foresee a single thing that could be wrong with a giant shark movie directed by the director of National Treasure starring Jason Statham and Dwight from the Office. Release: Aug 10 Farenheit 451 - (Dir. Ramin Baharani, Star. Michael b. Jordan, Michael Shannon) HBO's adaption of Ray Bradbury's famous novel about fireman who burn books in the future. My favorite book. The cast is great, but nothing about the Pros: Great source material Cons: Hard to translate to screen. Release: May 2018 Creed II - (Dir. Steven Caple Jr., Star. Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson) - Under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa, newly crowned light-heavyweight champion Adonis Creed faces off against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago. Pros: Great momentum from the first film Cons: No Ryan Coogler (Caple is supposed to be a Coogler protégé though) Release: Nov 21 Under the Silver Lake (Dir. David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) Stars Andrew Garfield) – A man becomes obsessed with a kidnapped girl and must rush to save her before it's too late. Pros: David Robert Mitchell’s first movie since It Follows Cons: Looks like one of those movies that could unravel effortlessly Release: June 22 Solo: A Star Wars Story (5/25) - They haven’t made a bad star wars film, so this could be good, but I don’t have high hopes. Still, it’s a Star Wars movie so I’ll see it. Avengers: Infinity War (April 27)- Gonna be a huge film with a lot of surprises Incredibles 2 (June 15) - Sequel to one of Eric's favorite Pixar films A Quiet Place (Apr 6) - Well reviewed horror, reminiscent of M. Night's 'Signs'. MI-6 (7/27)- The sixth movie of that Tom Cruise franchise where he runs a lot. The Death of Stalin (releasing now)- From the creator of Veep.
