fWotD Episode 2818: Ada Wong Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 21 January 2025 is Ada Wong.Ada Wong is a character in Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), a survival horror video game series created by the Japanese company Capcom. Ada was first mentioned in the original Resident Evil (1996), before being introduced as a supporting character and antiheroine in Resident Evil 2 (1998). The character was initially conceived as a researcher named Linda for the prototype of the second game, but her name was changed to Ada and she was rewritten as a spy and mercenary for the final build to connect its story to that of the original. Over the course of the series, Ada is often hired to steal biological weapons for various organizations, although she betrays her employers on numerous occasions to save protagonist Leon S. Kennedy from dire situations.Ada is featured in several Resident Evil games, novelizations, and films, and has also appeared in other game franchises such as Project X Zone, Teppen, and Dead by Daylight. Several actresses have portrayed the character. Sally Cahill, Courtenay Taylor, Jolene Andersen, and Lily Gao, among others, have provided Ada's voice for her video game and animated appearances, while Li Bingbing and Gao have played her in the live-action Resident Evil films.Critics have positively responded to Ada as a character, highlighting her intelligence and resourcefulness as her key personality traits. Several journalists have praised Ada's portrayal as a femme fatale, and cited her as an example of a female character who is as competent and skilled as her male counterparts. Due to Ada's Asian ethnicity, however, concerns that the character perpetuates the Orientalist trope of the "Dragon Lady" have also been raised. Ada's outfits—particularly her red dress from Resident Evil 4 (2005)—have been brought up in discussions pertaining to the male gaze and criticized for being overtly sexualized. Gao's performance as Ada in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 received unfavorable reviews. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:01 UTC on Tuesday, 21 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Ada Wong on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.
Prost.
Based on the 1997 novel, “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror” by Steve Altan, this film was directed by Jon Turtletaub and stars Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Li Bingbing, Page Kennedy, Ruby Rose, Rainn Wilson & Winston Chao. After a deep water expedition of the Mariana Trench goes very wrong, a group of scientists are horrified to learn that a 75 foot “Megalodon” shark has escaped the trench and is headed for populated waters in the Pacific Ocean. The film rights were originally bought by Disney shorty after the novel was published but after years of development hell, the rights were then acquired by Warner Bros. and plans for a feature film were announced in 2013.
Jay, Mark and Megan discuss the 2018 gigantic shark film The Meg. Directed by Jon Turtletaub, and starring Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Cliff Curtis, and a cranky dinosaur, the movie focuses on what happens when an apex predator (Jason Statham) battles another apex predator. In this episode, they also talk about ripped alcoholics, falling off boats and Uncle Statham. Don't go in the water, Spookies — Sharky OneWeek is back with a vengeance. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're doing some deep sea exploration with The Meg (2018) to make sure we're ready for the upcoming sequel, but you might be surprised to discover how timely the first film actually is. With a cast that includes Rainn Wilson, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose, and Masi Oka, this super-sized shark movie is exactly the kind of fun you're looking for. Plus, it stars '90s music video vixen Jason Statham stripping down, showing feet, and uttering some classic action movie leading man lines, so really what more could you want? The fourth film in this franchise was directed by Michael Bay but features an entirely new cast that include Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Li Bingbing, TJ Miller & Sophia Myles. Peter Cullen also returns as the voice of “Optimus Prime” and he also is joined by a new cast that include John Goodman, Ken Watanabe, Mark Ryan, John DiMaggio & Frank Welker. Welker voiced “Megatron” in the 1980s animated series and the 1986 animated film. This film takes place 3 years after the previous film and now the CIA has issued a Black Op mission to wipe out the remaining transformers, both good and bad. Optimus Prime is on run but is found and restored by a crackpot inventor from Texas. The inventor and his family become targets of the CIA while Optimus becomes a target for a Cybertronian bounty hunter. Despite this film being the highest grossing film of the year, it was yet again panned by critics for bland storylines, uninteresting characters and over reliance on big action sequences.

This week marks the first week of our MayGay Shark month here on Slashers Podcast! Today we kick off this month with our dear friend Micah from Damn That's Scary podcast to discuss 2018's The Meg. If you all recall, or were like Ade and Micah thinking this movie came out like a year ago, this 2018 film centers around a giant Megalodon shark and the people it picks off. It was directed by Jon Turtletaub, who you may know directed classics like National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas. The film is loosely based on the novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, written by Steve Alten. It stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis. There is currently a sequel in development and should be released by August of next year, but until then, listen in to all of the juicy details of this week's episode, and feel free to chime in if there are any other shark horror flicks you'd like us to cover. What do you get when you add Jason Statham, Rainn Wilson, a 60 ft shark and the song “Hey Mickey” sung in Thai? A really mediocre shark movie. Friend of the show, Tall Chris, is back to take a bite out of "The Meg"! And yes, I completely fucked up and mistook Li Bingbing for Fan Bingbing halfway through. No need for internet crucifixion. It's a fun enough summer movie, though it departs radically from the book (some of which is for the best). Also, is Steve Alten another member of the Hollywood Incels Club? We'll talk about it!

The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, stick to the shallows for this week's review of The Meg (2018). The Meg stars Jason Statham as a deep sea rescue diver who tangles with a prehistoric super-shark called the megalodon more than 200 miles off the coast of China. Billed as a modern-day thriller in the same vein as Jaws (1975), the film features an international cast and borrows heavily from some of its predecessor's most beloved moments. The question remains, however, whether it will stand the test of time or sink quickly. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the film is based off a series of adventure novels by Steve Alten. Some liberties have been taken in converting the story from page to screen, although it's difficult to say whether the final product is stronger or weaker for the changes. The film also stars Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, Robert Taylor, Page Kennedy, Masi Oka, Winston Chao, and Jessica McNamee.

From London to Paris to New York, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum has become major attractions in metropolitans around the world. Recently, the museum has opened its doors in China's capital city, Beijing. This is the fourth Madame Tussauds' in China, following Hong Kong, Shanghai and Wuhan. Having been to another Madame Tussauds in Canada, I was excited to find out which celebrities I would see in a wax museum in China. I am standing right in front of the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum of Beijing. It is located right across the street from the Qianmen subway station. It's a very old street with some very ancient Chinese architecture. So we're going into the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum right now and let's see what's inside. So I just entered Madame Tussauds and the entrance is decorated with a lot of Chinese lanterns. At the entrance, you can take a picture of yourself riding on a rickshaw and I'm going down the stairs right now to see what's on the first floor. The first wax figure I see is Mei Lan Fang, the great Chinese opera star. He's got a lot of fans. A lot of people want to pose with him. Next to him, there are some head dresses and masks that people can wear when they're taking pictures with him. It looks like the first floor is devoted to Chinese celebrities. There's also the famous Chinese volleyball player, Lang Ping. These wax figures are extremely real right down to the texture of their skin. So I'm now going to touch Lang Ping's skin. It feels very rough. It doesn't feel like a skin texture. Feels like plastic. But it still looks very real. And you can guess who that is. It's the Chinese astronaut, Yang Liwei, in his space suit. Behind him is a space capsule C not made of wax but of metal. We're entering the International celebrity area. There's Queen Elizabeth in her crown and mink fur. A lot people taking pictures with her. Right across from her is Prince William and his wife, Katherine. Catherine is as fashionable as ever in a light purple dress and a diamond bracelet. In the next room, there's a wax figure of President Obama. He's standing next to his chair in the Oval Office. Right across from him is a wax figure of Nelson Mandela and Vladmir Putin. Now we continue onto the third floor for more attractions. So a little bit about Madame Tussauds. She grew up in 18th century France and had sittings with Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin and made figures of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, using death masks of their guillotined heads. After the revolution, Madame Tussauds brought her wax figures to England and founded one of the world's most famous attractions, Madame Tussauds. The methods used in sittings and figure making have been passed down from generation to generation C spanning almost 250 years. The next set of attractions is sports figures. The first one, the most famous of them all, is David Beckham. Looking very handsome in suit and tie in a locker room. I think these are life size because these basketball players looks very tall, especially Yao Ming. Kobe Bryant isn't that tall. But, as for Yao Ming, I come up only to his hips. So the next is the international celebrity section. The first one of the most famous Marilyn Monroe in a white dress. Next to her is another female celebrity, Audrey Hepburn on the set of Breakfast at Tiffany's. There's also James Bond, the Daniel Craig portrayal of the iconic 007. There's Bruce Lee, who seem to on the movie set of Enter the Dragon. I met a young girl named Lili here. She's here with her aunt and cousin. "Who's your favorite?" "Audrey Hepburn." "Why do you like her?" "I saw a lot of her old movies like Roman Holiday. She was beautiful." "Do you see any differences with the real person?" "Not really. It looked real, especially her hair." Downstairs on the second floor are more international celebrities. There's Carina Lau, the wife of Tony Leung. She's placed next to Johnny Depp. Right across from them is Leonardo DiCaprio. On the other side of DiCaprio is Kate Winslet, his costar on Titanic. These wax figures looks extremely real. And the dresses that they wear are actually real, not made of wax. These are made of cloth. These celebrities are decked out in jewelry. They're wearing diamond earring, diamond bracelet and diamond rings. There's also a wax figure of Li Bingbing. Her eyes just follow you everywhere. Quite creepy. And as we exit the wax museum, there's George Clooney looking very handsome sitting on his couch. There's even a wax figure in the gift shop. Steve Jobs is standing next to his Apple products. Now, we're exiting the gift shop and the museum. That was a great experience. You get to see so many Chinese and international celebrities without leaving Beijing. I can tell that the sculptors of these wax figures paid a lot of attentions to details to make them exact replicas of the real people they're representing. If you're in Beijing and would like to meet your favorite celebrities, come to the wax museum. They will be happy to take some photos with you. But it's uncertain whether you will get autographs.
