In this episode Martha and Kate share some of their experience in the Catholic Worker, its work today, and discuss political theology and practice. Find out more about the CWM here. Despite the Catholic Church being mired in its sexual abuse scandal which has tarnished the faith's reputation globally, Catholic history also holds many courageous stories of people working for peace, social justice and economic equity. We're going to spend some time on those stories on this program. Today Megan Kamerick talks with three guests. The episode leads off with Megan's conversation with Kate Hennessy, the granddaughter of Dorothy Day, who co-founded the Catholic Worker movement. Then Kerry Walters discusses his book: "Saint Óscar Romero: Pastor, Prophet, Martyr. Romero was assassinated in 1980 while saying mass and was canonized in 2018. He died the day after he spoke out against the violence in El Salvador. Megan also speaks with Sister Simone Campbell, a contemporary advocate of social justice and one of the leaders of the “Nuns On The Bus” movement, wherein a group of nuns travels on a bus from town to town throughout the U.S. to advocate for under-served populations.

Last week, we heard Kate Hennessy talk about her writing, her life, and her grandmother, Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker. In this episode, Hennessy takes questions from Dean Dettloff and the audience, exploring Hennessy's writing process, life in the Catholic Worker, and what Dorothy Day could mean for a time like ours. Drawing from her book Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty, Hennessy gives an insider's look at one of the most exciting Christian movements to come out of the twentieth-century. In a moment of political strife and complexities, Christians have no shortage of powerful examples who left behind a creative and subversive legacy. Among them is Dorothy Day, a feisty New Yorker who is currently being considered for canonization in the Catholic Church. During her life, Day founded the Catholic Worker, a ragtag group of Christian activists that is still going strong today, known for a commitment to radical hospitality and peace. Scholarly studies of Day and the Catholic Worker are easy to come by, but ICS had the privilege of hosting Kate Hennessy, Day's youngest grandchild, to hear firsthand about her life, her community, and her legacy. In this first of two episodes, Kate Hennessy talks about her book Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty. The book provides an intimate look into the story of Dorothy Day and those she touched. Vulnerable, complicated, funny, and inspiring, Hennessy's book offers a unique window into a life marked by a deep Christian faith and love for the least of these. Kate Hennessy is a freelance writer and editor. I first read Kate's work in about 2009, when we were both contributors to the Australian music website Mess+Noise, where she was a critic and feature writer whose work I admired greatly from afar, since she was based in Sydney. It wasn't until 2016 that we met for the first time, at the Rock & Roll Writers Festival in Brisbane, where we were both guest speakers. In the intervening years since I first saw her byline, Kate has worked as a music and arts critic for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian Australia and The Quietus, among others, as well as travel writing for a range of Australian and overseas publications. Outside of freelancing, she works in corporate writing and editing, and teaches courses on music journalism and professional business writing. It was the latter skillset that brought Kate to Brisbane in mid-May, and we met at her hotel room so I could ask her a few questions over a bottle of white wine. Our conversation touches on how she learned to make boring things interesting while working for a corporate writing agency; why she decided to become a freelancer as she approached the age of 30, and how it turned out to be a perfect fit for her; why she received hate mail from a musician after writing about his band in The Sydney Morning Herald; why the supply-and-demand in the travel writing business is worse than in music journalism, and why she thinks live music is like sex. Kate Hennessy's music and arts criticism appears in The Guardian, ABC Arts, Fairfax, Australian Book Review, Noisey, Limelight, Mess+Noise and UK magazines The Wire and The Quietus. Kate talks about arts on ABC TV and has spoken at Vivid Ideas, Darwin Writers' Festival, the Rock & Roll Writers' Festival, Bigsound and at live events for Sydney's FBi Radio. Kate is an Australian Music Prize judge, a founding member of feminist collective LISTEN and a teacher of five years at the Australian Writers’ Centre. She developed a masterclass for The Guardian called 'How To Be A Music Journalist', offered in Sydney and Melbourne, and as a festival workshop at Hobart's Dark Mofo festival. Kate's travel journalism has taken her to Africa, Papua New Guinea, Turkey, Solomon Islands, Germany, Peru, Taiwan and remote Indigenous communities in Australia. She has a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing major) from Wollongong University and won a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed a double major in Political Science and History. "Hopping Roller Coasters" tells the story of author Rachel Pappas who was an in-your face mother, but loved her daughter more than life. "Mom doesn’t play around when the neighborhood bully’s taunting got way out of hand. She stood up to hard-nosed teachers who didn’t get that you don’t punish a child who’s flailing; Marina needed help. And she sat in the front row, clapping till her palms hurt when her half-Greek, half-Jewish daughter took the podium at her predominantly African American school—glowing in her cap, gown, and greased cornrows." No one was going to hurt Marina. No one. Except Rachel herself, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition her daughter would struggle with too. This is the story of a mother and daughter’s journey, a two-decade-long roller coaster ride. Actually you’re hopping from one roller coaster to the next through this openly told story of unexpected turns and pure love.
