PUBLIC VERSION. Actress/model turned director/producer Brande Roderick (TV's BAYWATCH, STARSKY & HUTCH, HOOD OF HORROR, THE NANNY DIARIES, TV's THE SURREAL LIFE, PLAYBOY's 2001 “Playmate of the Year”) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss her career journey and the making of her debut feature film WINEVILLE - available now! From growing up in a horror loving family and the films she saw as a child that shaped her appreciation for the genre… to how the pandemic, her desire to keep working, and the availability of an amazing location served as the genesis for getting into the director's chair for WINEVILLE… to producing the film herself and having to juggle all aspects of the production while simultaneously acting and directing in it… to how she made the choice to set the film in the 70's and the challenges of pulling off a period piece with limited resources… to casting her actual son Keaton to play the role of her son in the film and working with previous MOVIE CRYPT guest Texas Battle (WRONG TURN 2)… to managing everything from children to stunts to make-up/gore FX on an ambitious 12 day shoot… to why it was so crucial to cast seasoned actors she could count on when up against such a fast shooting schedule… to the various obstacles she was hit with once filming began… to how she approached handling the film's delicate and dark themes like sexual abuse… to how her experiences working as an actress on various TV and feature film sets informed her approach behind the camera and the helpful lessons she learned along the way… to being part of the very first groundbreaking season of THE SURREAL LIFE and the start of what would become the “Celeb-Reality” genre of television… to how she prepared to compete on THE CELEBRITY APPRENTICE and stories from living in the Playboy Mansion… Brande's long career has continued to expand thanks to her fearless approach to new challenges, her refusal to be stereotyped, and her willingness to step out of her comfort zone. The Dukes of Hazzard was one of many TV shows to be adapted in the early and mid-2000s. Some were good, most were not. Dukes falls into the latter category. But it shouldn't have. Helmed by Broken Lizard's Jay Chandrasekhar and starring Johnny Knoxville, Sean Williams Scott, Burt Reynolds, and Jessica Simpson (amongst many other notable names), the ingredients were there. Yet despite its talented cast and director, it's a painfully unfunny update that mostly runs on fumes. The script, which ranges between mediocre and outright awful, has no real ideas of its own. This movie desperately wants to be Starsky & Hutch, which isn't all that shocking since they apparently sought Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson for the lead roles. Even worse, Dukes recycles jokes from movies that came out over a decade before it. There simply is not enough moonshine in Georgia to make you forget how much better the films it's trying to emulate are. On the plus side, the care chases are pretty damn sweet. In the end, though, like the Confederate Flag that adorns the General Lee, the concept was better left to the scrap heap of history. So sit back, pop the top on a Drivin' and Cryin' Straight to Hell Session IPA from Burnt Hickory Brewery, and slide across the hood of the General Lee! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla and the good old boys from the Double Turn Podcast are running moonshine down the backroads of Hazzard County! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – In the land of pointless TV show adaptations, Dukes ranks toward the bottom of the shine barrel. (00:00) The "Crazy" Cooter Trivia Challenge – Chumpzilla challenges us to a series of Dukes of Hazzard-themed questions—both from the show and movie. The 2017 film "Baby Driver" takes place in a world of vivid colors and nonstop music, but all of the feebly-depicted characters are black and white and the chords the film attempts to hit end up sounding dissonant. Its director, Edgar Wright, seems to have lost his knack for comedy and instead resorts to a bunch of stale criminal lingo that sounds like he learned it by watching old episodes of "Starsky & Hutch." Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a car thief with superhuman tinnitus powers who, as a teenager, inadvertently stole a vehicle loaded with thousands of dollars in drugs that was owned by an Atlanta kingpin. As a result, he's forced to become an indentured servant getaway driver for several years in order to pay for the cost of the stolen merchandise. Lily James plays Debora, a singing waitress who works at a diner that Baby habitually frequents because his dead mother, a former singing waitress, used to work there. She instantly falls for Baby upon meeting him while he’s looking at the kids menu. Then, things continue to get real Oedipal real fast as she takes on a romantic role in his life as well as a quasi-maternal role. Kevin Spacey plays Doc, an underworld boss who carefully organizes major heists in the Atlanta area out of his secret warehouse lair that’s smack dab in the middle of downtown and is frequented by so many criminals that there is no way that it wouldn’t be exposed. He also makes a big point of claiming that he assembles a different crew for each and every job, but then we see him recycle the same people almost immediately. Jon Hamm and Eiza González play Buddy and Darling, a murderous and passionate pair who engage in high-stakes robbery to fuel their cocaine habits. It’s hard to determine what’s less believable, Jon Hamm as a hardened criminal or Eiza González casually firing two automatic weapons at the same time. Jamie Foxx plays Bats, a trigger-happy buffoon who kills almost everyone he meets and is incapable of completing a sentence without inserting some sort of failed pun or nonsensical remark. Join us as we discuss Jon Hamm's shady college past, how this movie instantly aged given Kevin Spacey's creepy dialogue, and how we blame J.J. Lots of people make movies these days. Every idiot with a digital camcorder thinks he is Scorsese, Tarantino, or Apatow, but Carr approached his first feature film, RevoLOUtion, a little differently. He landed Quinn Redeker, the man behind The Deer Hunter, to write his screenplay. Rocky composer Bill Conti created the title song. Paul Michael Glaser, best known as Detective Starsky from the classic TV series “Starsky & Hutch,” is a producer. Carr even convinced Burt Young, who played Sylvester Stallone’s brother-in-law in the Rocky films, to be himself in RevoLOUtion. But who to play Lou Benedetti, the stuttering, somewhat brain-damaged, yet ultimately inspirational star of the film? That would be Carr himself, who also produced and directed RevoLOUtion. And wait until you hear about his unusual ideas about marketing. Bret Carr IMDB   Kicking Through the Ashes: My Life As A Stand-up in the 1980s Comedy Boom by Ritch Shydner. Today's Guest: Paul Michael Glaser, actor, "Starsky & Hutch," children's author, Chrystallia and the Source of Light Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of aging tough guys who still won’t admit they ever sang along with David Soul in the shower … in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida!   Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD cover above! Paul Michael Glaser’s life as a public figure is entering its third act by my count. First, of course, there was his big break as Perchik in the 1971 film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof, followed by his years as the star of ABC’s long-running action series, “Starsky & Hutch,” in which he played Detective Dave Starsky opposite David Soul’s Detectie Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson. The show was hugely popular in the 1970s when it aired new episodes and reruns propelled it for many years to come. Glaser’s second act was unplanned: His wife Elisabeth Glaser was tragically struck down by AIDS in 1994. Before dying, she bravely made her illness a campaign for greater public understandng and empathy for AIDS victims, putting a broader face on something many people preferred to see only as something that afflicted the gay community. O rder your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! PAUL MICHAEL GLASER audio excerpt: "The mind does not want to acknowledge helplessness. Because if you acknowledge helplessness, you're going to fall down this black hole and it's all going to be over for the rest of your life... The mind has no way to cope with helplessness."  Less well remembered in the years since is that his daughter with Elizabeth died very young of complications from AIDS. Their son contracted HIV in the womb but survived. Glaser has kept his wife and daughter’s spirit alive through his work with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Now he’s ready for a completely different turn on the celebrity stage, this time as the author of a children’s novel called Chrystallia and The Source of Light. Some elements of the fantasy story in Chrystallia may ring true for people who have followed the Glaser story over the years, particularly its story of a mother of two adolescents wasting away before their very eyes.
