Meredith Shaw has a vast career from country music, model, inclusivity style-expert, radio show host and even cook show host! Her story, while ever-evolving, has also brought so many lessons and life tools along with it, which we’re so glad she could share some with us today. Meredith is a shining light, and her career is truly one to watch and be inspired by in all its “scrappy” ways from the get-go, like seeing a lack of representation in inclusive styling...and then doing it herself...on TV! Makes you wonder when you see yourself missing from a space, how can you show up in it? And maybe, with a story like Meredith’s, believe that you can. Because what do we always say? “I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m doing it anyway” You can find Meredith and EVERYTHING she’s up to on IG @MeredithShaw Head over to goodnightsleepsite.com to book your complimentary 15-minute discovery call with a Good Night Sleep Site consultant and start your journey towards sleep success. This episode of the Korea Now podcast features an interview that Jed Lea-Henry conducted with Meredith Shaw. They speak about how the North Korean regime deals with and re-interprets “messages” from other countries and international institutions, what the state-produced literature that deals with this messaging looks like, the three main types of these foreign messaging interactions: 1. Economic sanctions. 2. Summit diplomacy. 3. Military exercises/fleet movements, how the Korean Writer's Union (as a part of the Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department) directs North Korean fiction in this regard, how the North Korean regime uses these messages to their internal advantage through fiction, and what type of external messaging is hardest for Pyongyang to spin. Meredith Shaw is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Tokyo and the managing editor of Social Science Japan Journal. Meredith has worked as a research associate and translator at the Korean Institute of National Unification, and her current research focuses on the analysis of North Korean literature. “At 14 I booked myself into a studio and recorded a demo and it was sent to a producer in Nashville. He liked it and I flew back and forth to Nashville a few times. So Nashville was the very first place I ever made music in a studio,” Toronto's Meredith Shaw explains. “And I know I have come back to this place very naturally. Every moment of putting these new songs together has felt right. I just feel very at ease and at home.” Her passion for country music was rekindled over the past few years through writing trips back down to Nashville, working with The Stellas and Carolyn Dawn Johnson - among others. Meredith's debut country single is called Better Than This - a song she co-wrote. “For much of the past couple of years most of the people I was writing with, talking with, and dealing with on a regular basis were in country music. I know I am in the right place,” she said adding that she has always been drawn to female singers who not only had powerful voices but powerful personalities, regardless of their genre citing the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Stevie Nicks, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride and fellow Canadians Shania Twain and CDJ as key role models. Songwriter/producer Jeff Johnson has been brought in to produce the music that will eventually become Meredith’s debut country music album. His track record with breakthrough acts like Wes Mack, and his writing credits with Dallas Smith, Madeline Merlo and Small Town Pistols impressed her. Meredith is the host of the top-rated weekend radio show in Toronto on boom 97.3, a model with a number of successful national campaigns to her name, a business owner of a gift and custom greeting card company, and a philanthropist who started the Girls Who Believe Festival to help girls and young women reach their fullest potential through affirmation and mentorship.
