Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Valarie Long, daughter of actors Richard Long and Mara Corday. At times our conversation was breezy, at times difficult and at other times funny, Valerie really took some time with this interview because there was so much to discuss. From health issues that plagued Richard his whole life to some of those same issues that Valerie herself faced, we hear about how her father was plucked from obscurity as a high school senior at Hollywood High School and within no time was working on films with Orson Welles, Claudette Colbert, Loretta Young and Edward G. Robinson. We also discuss her father's first marriage prior to meeting the pinup girl Playboy model turned actress Mara Corday, to a young ingénue named Suzan Ball who tragically passed away at age 22 when Richard was only 23 whose tragic story is one we had never heard of prior to connecting to Valerie. Somehow we end up talking to Valerie about people like Clint Eastwood, Peter Marshall, Lee Majors, Barbara Stanwyck, Roddy McDowell, Dan Rowan and Sit John Mills. We also discuss iconic TV shows like The Big Valley, The Twilight Zone, 77 Sunset Strip, Nanny and the Professor and more. We discuss movies like Tarantula, Sudden Impact, Tomorrow is Forever, Ma and Pa Kettle and Make Like a Thiefand others. It's a rollicking conversation that was equal parts funny, heartwarming and poignant and we thank Valerie for shying away from nothing in our conversation.. But that's how things happen on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. And this one is a keeper.

From The Lady Eve, to The Big Valley, Barbara Stanwyck played parts that showcased her multidimensional talents but also illustrated the limits imposed on women in film and television. Catherine Russell's A to Z consideration of the iconic actress analyzes twenty-six facets of Stanwyck and the America of her times. Russell examines Stanwyck's work onscreen against the backdrop of costuming and other aspects of filmmaking. But she also views the actress's off-screen performance within the Hollywood networks that made her an industry favorite and longtime cornerstone of the entertainment community. Russell's montage approach coalesces into an engrossing portrait of a singular artist whose intelligence and savvy placed her center-stage in the production of her films and in the debates around women, femininity, and motherhood that roiled mid-century America. Original and rich, The Cinema of Barbara Stanwyck: Twenty-Six Short Essays on a Working Star (U Illinois Press, 2023) is an essential and entertaining reexamination of an enduring Hollywood star. Catherine Russell is Distinguished University Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University in Montreal. She goes by Katie, she sings in a choir, and she has two cats. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Linda Evans, Multi-Award Winning Actress & Star of “Dynasty” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Linda Evans, is a beloved, multi-award winning actress, author and public speaker who's been dazzling the world with her talent, warmth, grace, spirituality – and yes, her legendary beauty - since she first came into our homes on TV as Barbara Stanwyck's daughter “Audra Barkley” in “The Big Valley”. She's also appeared in a number of classic movies including “The Klansman” with Richard Burton, “Avalanche Express” with Lee Marvin, and “Tom Horn” with Steve McQueen. And yes, that was HER playing “Sugar Kane” in “Beach Blanket Bingo”. She also made 2 “Gambler” movies with Kenny Rogers, and she co-starred in the highly acclaimed TV mini-series “North and South Book 2: Love and War”. But there can be no doubt that our guest has been forever immortalized for her unforgettable portrayal of the glamorous and highly likeable “Krystal Karrington” on the blockbuster TV series, “Dynasty”, for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Drama Series, and was nominated 4 more times for Golden Globe Awards, as well as receiving an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also won 5 People's Choice Awards as Favorite Actress in a Drama Series. In 1987, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 1991, she delighted her loyal fans by resuming her role as “Krystle Karrington” in the TV miniseries, “Dynasty: The Reunion”. In 2006, she reunited with her castmates for the TV special, “Dynasty: Catfights and Caviar”. In 2006, she and Joan Collins starred in a fabulous play called “Legends”, which I got to see in Toronto, at the beginning of their 9-month sold-out tour. And then, in 2009, the whole world was rooting for her in the British cooking competition reality show, “Hell's Kitchen”, which she won. And most recently, she can be seen in “Swan Song”, co-starring Jennifer Coolidge. In 2015, she released an entertaining, poignant, spiritually uplifting and delicious memoir entitled, “Recipes for Life: My Memories”. I've described the book as “delicious” because it includes some of our guest's favourite recipes. And let me tell you: if you're a foodie like me, her famous artichoke dip, her crab and lobster cakes with mustard beurre blanc, her baked ham, her potatoes with cheese and garlic, and her lemon soufflé with raspberry sauce are EASILY worth TEN TIMES the price of the book. It's 2023, the future is here and things are getting weirder by the minute. In this episode, Lorrie and I are diving headfirst into the ever-evolving business world and exploring how to stay relevant in this constantly changing landscape. We'll be sharing our top tips on embracing change, taking the lazy (ahem, efficient) approach, and unlocking your full potential. So whether you're in need of some serious inspiration or Angie's ridiculous lipstick sidebar, hit that play button and let's go! Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:This one is sure to set some underoos on fire: I love lazy people. Laziness is a SUPER power. Here's how I harness the power of self-interest to move mountains (from the comfort of my couch, with as little effort as possible)... “AI is gonna take all our jobs!” If you've been terrified about the machines taking over since the first Terminator movie, Lorrie and I have a different way to look at the situation (and this might be something you can harness to do awesome things in your business)... Want a fun little exercise in futility? Try digging in your heels and insisting that the world stop changing. That's a smart direction to pursue if you wanna go the way of Blockbuster when it had to close all its video rental stores. Here's how to get comfortable with the discomfort of rapidly evolving tech… Sometimes the best advice is tried and true: do the hard shit first. Lorrie reveals the success insights she gained from her new cowgirl lifestyle (and how you can build mental toughness and follow-through to do what you need to do, too)... Bad news: Imposter Syndrome never really goes away, no matter how far you go in business. Good news: people are STILL building kickass stuff even if they don't feel confident. Lorrie and I share how a tiny attitude adjustment (plus a simple plan) will help you accomplish your goals like the badass you are…This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Lorrie's Bio:Lorrie Morgan is considered an industry trailblazer in the world of emotional response copywriting & marketing…especially when it comes to selling to women. She founded her first company Red Hot Copy in 1999 so she could work anywhere, raise her family, and make a good living. She recently started her own podcast called The Cowgirl Code to share how she's learned to "cowgirl up" despite her fears.Today she lives in Arizona on a 14-acre horse ranch with her partner in crime. When she's not mentoring other business owners on marketing, she's usually living out her Big Valley fantasies by riding her horse, feeding chickens, or shooting competitively.Resources and links mentioned:Lorrie's Website Lorrie's Books Lorrie's Coaching Programs Lorrie on FacebookLorrie on InstaLorrie on Twitter Come kick ass with me:Permission to Kick Ass websiteAngie's Facebook PageAngie on InstaAngie on YouTube

Take a break from the present, Pilgrim and mount up! Jovial Jay and Shua strap on the chaps, kick on the spurs, and don the ten-gallon hat as they remember some of the great Western movies and TV shows they grew up with. Get along l'il doggies and Enjoy Stuff! Hollywood may have romanticized the Old West to create a pretty unrealistic view of history, but it sure made for some great movies. Cowboy movies have been around for more than 100 years, but some of them really stood out as we were growing up. Giddy up, pardners and get ready to Enjoy some Westerns. News Kellogg's and Nickelodeon are ready to fill your guts with slime! Well, Apple Jacks Slime Cereal anyway We have new, official images of the LEGO Atari 2600 set, and it is almost cooler than the real thing. The ice cream van is coming down your street. And the sign on the truck says “Hot” and “Now” because there are new Ice Cream inspired donuts at Krispy Kreme Nintendo is breaking into pictures! They just bought a movie studio to make their own movies based on their IP What we're Enjoying Look out for Shua because he's been flinging axes at a place in town called Flanneljax. Who knew that axe throwing could be a fun group activity? Well, Monty Python knew it was OK to be a lumberjack. Jay finally made it to see Pixar's Lightyear. He enjoyed the story but thought they could have done even more. Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Be sure to check out Jay's articles on Retrozap.com. This week he revisits the 1995 Bruce Willis film 12 Monkeys. Willis plays a time traveler that is sent back in time to save the future from a raging disease. The world is a mess because of disease and famine and a bunch of leaders that aren't helping to solve the…uh… Um, I don't think he succeeded. And don't forget his articles on MCULocationScout.com for some great, interactive maps of filming locations. Enjoy Movies, Pardner! Did you know that Westerns have been around since 1899? That's practically the Old West anyway. (Maybe they were just called movies back then) The famous Great Train Robbery (1903) may not have been the first, but it helped secure the genre as a main staple in Hollywood forever. When we were growing up, a lot of the classics were played on TV. That's where we saw great flicks like The Magnificent Seven (1960) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Clint Eastwood established himself as a very tough cowboy in the Spaghetti Westerns by Sergio Leone. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966) especially has some legendary scenes. John Wayne really epitomized the cowboy image in a ton of movies. The Searchers (1956) didn't paint a very good picture of the Native Americans, but director John Ford established some incredible vistas that movie makers still use to set the scene today. And True Grit (1969) won him an academy award for the part of Rooster Cogburn. A role that would be reprised in 2010 by Jeff Bridges in the remake. The 80s and 90s were no slouches when it came to Westerns either. The success of movies like Silverado (1985) brought forth a resurgence of the genre. Young Guns (1988) and Tombstone (1993) helped young stars make their mark and build some strong careers. But they weren't all just straight Westerns. Some were hysterical, like Blazing Saddles (1974) or Three Amigos (1986). Or they may have Sci-Fi elements in them like Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982) or Back to the Future III (1990). Plus, it was a genre that could be easily played out on TV. Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, and The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. were going strong for years. The Westerns audience was built up by early stories of The Lone Ranger, Davy Crockett, and Daniel Boone. Historically accurate or not, Westerns give storytellers the opportunity to tell some morality tales and establish some very interesting characters. Do you like any Westerns? Would you wear a white hat or a black hat? Are you reading all the show notes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “There's a snake in my boot!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

Evans' first guest-starring role was on a 1960 episode of Bachelor Father. The series starred John Forsythe, with whom she would costar 20 years later on Dynasty.[5] After several guest roles in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet between 1960 and 1962, and guest appearances on television series such as The Lieutenant and Wagon Train, Evans gained her first regular role in 1965 in The Big Valley. Playing Audra Barkley, daughter of Victoria Barkley (played by Barbara Stanwyck. On December 31, 1967, John Derek, Linda's husband at the time, recruited her to operate one of his cameras after he had been commissioned by daredevil Evel Knievel to film his motorcycle jump of the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Evans captured the iconic images of Knievel's devastating crash as the jump failed.Evans was next cast as Krystle Carrington in Aaron Spelling's opulent new primetime soap opera, Dynasty, which premiered in January 1981.Intended as ABC's answer to the hit CBS series Dallas. Dynasty featured Evans as the former secretary and new wife of millionaire oil tycoon Blake Carrington, portrayed by her former costar John Forsythe. Although initially sluggish in the ratings, audience figures improved after the show was revamped and British actress Joan Collins was brought in to play opposite Evans and Forsythe as Blake's scheming ex-wife, Alexis Carrington. By the 1984–85 season, Dynasty was the number one show on American television, outranking Dallas.Evans won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series for her Dynasty role in 1981, and was subsequently nominated every year from 1982 to 1985. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1983.[16] Evans won a People's Choice Award for Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Program in 1982,[17] and for Favorite Female TV Performer in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986. She won a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1984 and 1985.Here's my interview on KRAK with the lovely Linda Evans.

Janalyn Voigt fell in love with literature at an early age when her father read chapters from classics as bedtime stories. When Janalyn grew older, she put herself to sleep with tales "written" in her head. Today Janalyn is a storyteller who writes in several genres. Her Montana Gold historical romance series is based on actual historical events. Montana Gold explores faith, love, and courage in the wild west. Tales of Faeraven, Janalyn's epic fantasy series, takes readers on adventures in a medieval storyworld much like our own. The first installment of Janalyn's latest series, Montana Treasures, will release May 5! The first novel is entitled The Promise Tree, and it's available for preorder at a discount right now! The same elements—romance, mystery, adventure, history, and whimsy—appear in all Janalyn's novels, no matter what their genre. Preorder The Promise Tree on Amazon. I have three boys. I have two girls. I was never warned,” he lamented. […] Rodenhouse said that it is his understanding that Mast had abused children in both the U.S. and Haiti, and that upon returning to the states, Mast intended on only telling the police about his American crimes and only did so after the families involved stated that they would not press charges. A friend sent me a link to a very insightful blog post by Paul Yoder called “The Silent Curtain“in which he argues that the difference between abuse cases among the Amish and Mennonites and those in the mainstream culture is the way they are handled. I couldn’t agree more. I highly recommend reading his article. I am convinced that the process of “forgiving and forgetting” among the Plain People is nearly as vulgar as the crimes themselves because it aids and abets the perpetrators — all in the name of Christianity. At best, it is a gross misinterpretation of Jesus’ message. Among the Plain People, there is no distinction made between adultery and child sexual abuse. Two young people who love one another and are not married having sex is adultery in their eyes. Sex between a married person with someone other than their partner is adultery in their eyes. Beastiality and child sexual abuse is also adultery in their eyes. This means they don’t distinguish between sex crimes and consensual relations between two adults. I believe that this black and white thinking is partly due to the lack of education. There is an almost stubborn insistence to adhere to the old ways of thinking, even when that thinking borders on ignorance. Why are the Amish still exempt from compulsory education, when everyone in the mainstream culture has to live by a whole other standard? Wouldn’t we condemn a culture in some foreign land that rests its survival on the premise that their children must not learn too much? It will be interesting to watch what happens in the case of Jeriah Mast. Will he be prosecuted in the full extent of the law, or will the peopl

The Prayers of the Victims have been heard and God is at work Psalm 34 PROJECT PENNSYLVANIA WWW.SIIUCRIMES.COM A Prayer for My Community (Written by a victim who is now a victor) Dear Father in Heaven, This morning my heart is heavy as I think about the atrocities of the past and present in my hometown of Belleville. I can’t imagine how You must feel, Jesus. I can’t imagine the pain and the aguish You must experience as You see the many, many little girls and boys being sexually victimized in the most horrible ways. I can’t imagine how much it angers You when the people who do these things are those who look good on the outside and claim to be Your children. I can’t imagine how You must feel when people who claim Your name turn their backs on such sin and crime, and refuse to bring such sin to the Light. O Jesus, sometimes I wonder: How can You let it go on? How long, O Lord? But then I remember that You are merciful to all. You desperately want those perpetrators to come to the end of themselves and fall at Your feet in true repentance for their sin. I forget sometimes that You are Sovereign. That You are Merciful. That You are in control of it all. And that someday, it will be made right. O Father, I pray for the victims. The innumerable little girls and boys. The teenagers who are being sold for sex. May you send the right people to guide them to You. May they know Your love. May they realize how much You care about them. May they find healing and rest in You. May they find protection from the enemy of their souls. May they make that hard decision to take responsibility for their response to the abuse. May they forgive and not become bitter. I pray that You would raise them up and that someday their pain would be used to help other little boys and girls. I pray for the parents and church leaders of the victims. I pray that You would raise up people who would realize the implications of abuse and how it destroys a person. I pray that You would give them wisdom in relating to these broken children and youth. I pray that if they have been abused themselves and have fought help, that they would be willing to work through their own pain. I pray that You would break the chains of generational sexual abuse in my hometown and the surrounding communities. I pray that there could be freedom and healing and that it would come only from You. And lastly, Jesus, I pray for the perpetrators. I pray that they would come to the end of themselves. I pray that it would happen in this life and not in the next. I pray for their souls. I pray that you would have mercy on them. I pray that their evil deeds would be exposed NOW and not at the judgment day. O Jesus, have mercy, please. They need You just as I need You. O God, please send the right people their way to take them by the hand and lead them to you. I pray for repentance and restoration for them. I pray for a godly sorrow that would lead to repentance. I know You care, Jesus. And I thank you so much that You are working behind the scenes. Thank you Father. Amen The SIIU Core Team believes God is moving to locate and heal the abused and give them a voice We also believe God is at work to bring down the perpetrators and remove those who knew but did nothing! Join in and pray, download this prayer and pass it along and post it everywhere….God is moving for sure Psalm 34

Red Time For Bonzo: A Marxist-Reaganist Film Podcast (Ronald Reagan Filmography)
Our second Reagan/Dwan collaboration is far inferior to Tennessee's Partner, despite some fine directorial touches and characteristically brilliant open air cinematography from John Alton, but it does furnish your hosts with a textbook example of colonialist hermeneutics in action. On the surface, Cattle Queen of Montana may come across as a "progressive" film, with its anti-bigotry rhetoric and championing of Colorados' "good" (i.e. assimilationist) faction of the Blackfoot tribe; however, as with all ideological narratives, the film is working overtime to head off any genuinely liberatory ideas at the conceptual pass, not unlike the current Trudeau government of Canada or the mainstream leaders of today's Democratic Party. The gang is grateful that the Gipper's filmography provided this one opportunity to discuss the amazing Barbara Stanwyck, perhaps the finest actor of the studio age - and a person whose politics were almost certainly more despicable than Reagan's own. Of course, since she never became commander in chief of anything outside of the Big Valley, she hurt many fewer people during the latter part of the 20th century. Toward the end of the podcast, we discuss some #MeToo developments in Canadian literary community that were breaking at the time of the recording (May 2018), delve into the harrowing life experiences of co-star Lance Fuller, and bring back Penny Singleton (from Swing Your Lady) in order to reassure ourselves that not all studio age Hollywood actors were fascists.
