Richard Norris is a man who believes in music, in its endless possibilities, in its catalytic effect on both the listeners and its creators. In his new book 'Strange things are happening' he reveals how his musical journey began in the silence of the countryside where he would listen for moles underground and the birdsong that filled in the air and how this attention to audio would snowball throughout his life as he adopted the DIY ethic of punk, made fanzines, formed bands, dug out psychedelic nuggets and found himself collaborating with an incredible list of artists & musicians. He co-wrote and produced seminal dance album 'Jack The Tab' (often cited as the UKs first Acid House record despite never having actually heard Acid House at the time). That started an affiliation with dance music that spawned worldwide success as one half of 'The Grid' and critical acclaim for his role in the psychedelic dance act 'Beyond the wizards sleeve'. As a producer and remixer he has worked an amazing list of artists including Joe Strummer, Sky Saxon, Genesis P'Orridge, David Ball, Erol Alkan and Robert Fripp. It's been an incredible life lived through music and we are delighted to welcome Richard to the podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this episode of the Ramble we meet Richard Norris to hear about his memoir of a lifetime in music, Strange Things Are Happening. The book spans the entirety of Richard's career from an early pivotal meeting with John Peel, via the birth of Acid House to Californian adventures with Joe Strummer. But Strange Things Are Happening is much more than a series of anecdotes. At its heart are a series of reflections on forty years of creative practice, a lifetime of collaborations and innovations in music that have brought countless people together. It is written with a rare grace, never shying from accounts of relationships imploding or ideas that don't make it. But above all else there is a deep sense of love here for the creative act and a gratitude for a life well lived.Strange Things Are Happening is published by White Rabbit Books and is a huge recommend.Richard Norris lived the 20th century and beyond like no one else and this is one of the truly great eyewitness accounts of the heroic years of the counterculture.'David Keenan@fieldzine /www.fieldzine.com

This week on the podcast, I welcome Richard Norris. 2022 ain't hanging around, with several musical big-hitters back and hitting some big ol' high notes! Iain and Andrew review the first studio offering from The Smile, a bracing new project spearheaded by - bingo cards at the ready! - Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood; The Weeknd accesses random memories and shoots for a Thriller!-sized blockbuster; while Father John Misty returns after giving the world a chance to miss him. Two less headline-grabbing but no less worthy projects are also up for discussion: Richard Norris's psych-folk outfit The Order Of The 12 and flute-tastic Belgian quintet Black Flower. There's also time for a decidedly un-wintery Vinyl Word - it's a good un! It's hard to overstate the influence that Richard Norris has had on the music industry over the past 40 years. In his youth in St Albans, Richard got involved in the experimental and creative punk rock scene, forming the Innocent Vicars, creating a DIY fanzine called 99%, working as a label manager for Bam Caruso and writing for Strange Things and the NME. Following a, let's say, "educational" collaboration with Genesis P. Orridge, Richard formed The Grid with Dave Ball (from Soft Cell) in 1988 and released their debut single, the Balearic-inspired Floatation in 1990. It was their 1994 single, Swamp Thing with the inspired banjo reel that catapulted the band to commercial success. Richard has been at the front of the ever-evolving electronic scene, from the early days of Shoom and The Clink, to covering the emergence of Amnesia in Ibiza, to releasing his own house, acid house, ambient, meditative, drone and psychedelic tracks. He's worked with Joe Strummer, has run record labels, DJ'd, wrote Paul Oakenfold's official biography and remixed and produced artists like Armand van Helden, Soft Cell, Saint Etienne, Cornershop, Billie Ray Martin, Shakespeare's Sister and has collaborated on the experimental project Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve with Erol Alkan. The list is almost endless!Recently, he has been doing his own thing - releasing a series of totally hypnotic, ambient, healing experiences, raising money for MIND. And latterly he released Hypnotic Response, a more psychedelic, experimental set of tracks. There's more exciting stuff in the works….take a listen to the wonderful mindset of one of music's legends.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste

FOR DECADES, globalization has been a fact of life. And even before Covid-19, it was becoming controversial. Now, with critical supply chains being disrupted by the pandemic, we're having a bit of a rethink. Whatever happens with global trade, one thing is certain: the global exchange of music, film, art and media is a cultural fact of life that will remain as vibrant and creative as ever. San Francisco is the home of Six Degrees Records, a company that's been dedicated to crossing musical borders since 1996, with the provocative slogan "everything is closer than you think." They live the idea, releasing a wide range of traditional and progressive music from around the planet. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an Anglo-American ambient journey, on a program called SIX DEGREES OF AMBIENT. Music is by ANOTHER FINE DAY, TOM MIDDLETON, BOB HOLROYD, TOM GREEN, HALFTRIBE, ANDREW HEATH, DARSHAN AMBIENT, JEFF PEARCE, RICHARD NORRIS, and MARK ISHAM. Maxine Sanders is one of the country's most iconic and possibly most controversial witches. In the 1960s and 70s, she and her late husband Alex Sanders were at the centre of Britain's witchcraft boom. At the height of their fame, they were featured weekly in tabloid newspapers and starred in numerous documentaries and films where they would recreate their dramatic rituals… It was the era when Flower Power and the sexual revolution were in full swing. The Witchcraft Act was repealed in 1951 making it no longer illegal to practise witchcraft, and Maxine and Alex were sexing its image up. Their coven was rapidly growing in size, as more and more people were drawn to the occult, and eventually they moved from Alderley Edge, near Manchester, to Notting Hill in London, where musicians like Jimmy Paige and Marc Bolan flocked to their wild parties. But it was also where a strange set of circumstances saw them linked to Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders in California... Presenter Kate Hutchinson came across Maxine in a book that she'd bought on her birthday in 2019, from Donlon Books in east London – in it was a striking image of a stunning woman with long blond hair, holding a dagger, in the middle of a circle, and she knew she had to find out more. We finally tracked Maxine down to her home in North West London, where we sat in her living room, filled with amazing antique books and ancient magic regalia. What she told us may raise an eyebrow or two, as Maxine recounts her early years in the craft, meeting her husband – the King of the Witches, Alex Sanders, how she dealt with being the subject of a tabloid frenzy week on week, the meaning of being a witch today, what it feels like to do a spell, her experiences of astral projection, sex magic and death, and overcoming persecution. It's quite a magical ride, so strap in tight. This episode was produced by Hannah Fisher. 1. Malani Bulathsinhala - Wasan Karannata Bae 2. Roh Hamilton and Tiffany Seal - Enchanted Forest 3. Radio ditto presents Campfire, where we talk to inspiring folk from the worlds of tech, art and culture. In this episode, we're joined by prolific London-based record producer, songwriter, sound engineer, musician, DJ and author Richard Norris. He is best known as a member of electronic dance band The Grid. Richard has also worked as a producer and engineer since the 80s with artists such as Bryan Ferry, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Marc Almond, Joe Strummer and Pet Shop Boys.He began making music as a teenage member of St. Albans punk band Innocent Vicars recording two singles in 1980 - ‘Antimatter‘ and ‘Funky Town‘ for the independent No Brain Records. He started working in the music industry as the label manager for the British psychedelic record label, Bam Caruso, before becoming a writer for NME in 1987. Since then Richard has been in the UK TOP 3 charts, most notably in with the single ‘Swamp Thing’ when he was a member of The Grid, and most recently performing at the 26th Anniversary of BBC Meltdown festival with Nile Rodgers, the most long-running artist-curated festival in the world. Richard is also working on a new abstract and ambient album Abstractions.During this fascinating talk we journey through Richards rise in music from electronic bedroom beats to UK TOP 3 singles. We find out why Joy Division were creatures from another planet and how a mix of music, LSD and fashion created the new term ‘Freakbeat’ embodying the mod, pop-psych sound. We talk about the rumours of Richard’s old manager based on an eccentric Spinal Tap character. We also discuss how music can be an escape and a safe haven, and the necessity to create a safe space in dubious surroundings, which is what led Richard onto his ambient adventure. At the end of the podcast, Richard gives his recommendations on what to listen to, what to read and what to watch.Visit ditto.tv/events to check out Richard's Campfire presents Big Boost Mondays event from October 7th at our Clerkenwell studios.

There is a wealth of new music to be discovered online, The Sonic Emporium is the latest in our never ending quest to explore the beyond. As a producer and disc jockey his music has been supported by the likes of Richard Norris, Ewan Pearson, Slam, Jori Hulkkonen and Daniel Avery. He has also invested a significant amount of time in sound exploration curating a carefully run website which showcases new music and champions up and coming talent. In the coming months he will release his debut album as part of a project called "The World In Winter" - a far removed piece of work from his excursions into dance music. In celebration of this it seemed apt and wise to ask him to contribute to our ever growing Monday mix series and he does so in fine style.

In a melting magical funnel of musical love (and the odd bit of reverb), musician David Bramwell investigates the unlikely story of how, in 1969, an amateur dramatic production of "Alice Through the Looking Glass", starring a young Martha Kearney, became one of the most sought-after psychedelic records in the world. Sony Award-winning musician David Bramwell heads out over the Downs to Ditchling, Sussex, where Peter Howell and John Ferdinando first met as teenagers - creating the soundtrack for the Ditchling Players' performance of "Alice", using not only musical instruments, but also kitchen appliances and field recordings, utilising the possibilities of the latest domestic recording gadget - a reel-to-reel tape machine. Bramwell travels across the Downs to meet folk chanteuse Shirley Collins and her tales of ghostly morris bells; dives beneath the waters of the Ouse with musician Isobel Anderson; is serenaded on the chalky hillsides by God of Hellfire, Arthur Brown; encounters a modern day Puck of Pook's Hill - poet Sam Walker; and finds out about the Ditchling Players from Ian Clayton, member since 1948, and his son Matthew; before enticing Martha Kearney, the young Alice, to recall the production's eccentric Englishness. For the confused, he grapples with the term 'pastoral psych folk' with former Oz and NME journalist John May, and rare groove aficionado Richard Norris, who moved to Sussex under the influence of this strange piece of musical history. And what became of those two young musicians? One is now a local surveyor - though he still plays in a band - whilst the other went on to re-master the Dr Who theme tune as a member of the Radiophonic Workshop. With music from the original album, and composer David Bramwell, 'White Rabbits in Sussex' is a psychedelic journey of its own, blending experimental studio techniques with music and narrative as we traverse the waterways and bottoms, the beacons and duck ponds of Sussex, in search of the muse. Producer: Sara Jane Hall.
