Katie Spotz wanted a big challenge. Something that would make her dig deep and have her only option to overcome the challenge or fail. She chose to row a boat, solo, across the Atlantic Ocean. She holds the record as the youngest person to do this.It was a challenge that gripped her, and she realized that she couldn't live with the regret if she didn't answer the challenge. She's continued to find ways to challenge herself, competing in triathlons and running ultramarathons. She especially enjoys designing her own adventures, running across numerous states and inline-skating the keys in Florida.
Endurance athlete and charitable ambassador Katie Spotz has been combining her passion for breaking records rowing, running, biking and swimming to raise money and awareness on her crusade for clean water. Katie Spotz, world class endurance athlete and charitable ambassador, joins the podcast to explain the difference between discipline and motivation. Well seasoned in incredible feats of athleticism, Katie has been given the informal nickname (by us) of "the female David Goggins" with one catch - she's happy! Through rowing across the entire Atlantic Ocean, running 30 miles every day for 11 days in a row across the state of Ohio, and cycling across the entirety of the United States, she has learned a thing or two about pain. In finding the depths of the pain cave and the heights of the runners high, Katie has calloused her mind to handle hard emotions as they come. But why does she do it? Fueled by her faith and relentless pursuit of the open frontier, Katie strives to bring awareness to a big problem in this world - over 1 billion people do not have access to clean water. Every adventure she embarks on represents a new fundraiser to provide true life to those who don't have it, through the gift of clean drinking water. Katie leaves us with the belief that when it comes to adventures or goals we want to pursue - we don't have to be fearless, we just have to try. It all started in Australia, she says… sitting on a bus as a know it all 19 year old. One brief conversation later so it seems the seed was planted. American adventurer, endurance athlete, philanthropist and author Katie Spotz is one of the most down to earth and simultaneously, uniquely driven humans I've had the pleasure to speak to. She's accomplished enough to have been featured on Joe Rogan's podcast in recent times and now here she is at the very pinnacle of her podcasting appearances. :) Katie has rowed (as in a boat), rode (as in a bike), and ran incredible distances collecting multiple records and accolated along the way. In March 2010, Spotz set the world record as the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, rowing 3,038 - which for us Aussies is 4900km, a 70 day trek with NO crew by her side. (somewhat insane to say the least) She's a gorgeous human, you're going to love her! In 2008, Spotz became the first person to swim the entire 325 miles (523 km) length of the Allegheny River, which runs between New York state and Pennsylvania. Accompanied by safety kayaker, James Hendershott, the two began on July 22 to hike the "stream" for 27 miles before starting at swimming depth on the river at Roulette, Pennsylvania. Swimming 12 to 15 miles a day, 6 to 8 hours a day for a month, they finished at the "Point" where the Allegheny and the Monongahela River join to form the Ohio River in Downtown Pittsburgh less than a month later, on August 21, 2008. On January 3, 2010, Spotz embarked on a solo ocean rowing crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, in a planned 2,473 miles (3,980 km) westward route from Senegal to French Guiana. During her journey, her diet consisted of mostly chocolate bars. En route she altered the route, increasing the total distance by approximately 400 miles (640 km), setting Georgetown, Guyana as the terminus for a total distance of 2,817 miles (4,534 km). More than $150,000 was raised for clean water projects as the mission behind the row. ... 00:00 Introduction & radically changing 14:56 How to deal with disagreeing people around you 19:50 Physical repercussions of endurance sports 28:06 Going across the Atlantic and how it changed you 43:26 Finding a calling 49:25 Depression and Christianity 55:26 Applying mindset to career & Charities 01:05:43 Getting sponsors and press & Social media 01:19:50 Going on the Joe Rogan podcast 01:29:40 Recovery after endurance sports 01:35:00 Endurance mindset relating to entrepreneurs 01:38:25 Books recommendations & Closing ... 11 years ago, she rowed her boat, solo, across the Atlantic Ocean. And she was just 19 years old. Katie Spotz is this week's guest on Amazing Americans. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Katie Spotz is an adventurer and the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean (4,534 km). Did I say... row… a boat…alone? No support boat! No medical support. Whales. Sharks. Flying fish (really). Huge waves and swells. Dehydrated meals. Making fresh water using a desalinator. Extreme heat (she was near the equator). Ever-present pain from rowing all day, every day. A high chance of failing (as most have done) and reasonable chance of dying (as some have done). When you consider that the distance from Melbourne to Perth is a tiny 3,420 km, you get an idea of the enormity of Katie's achievement. Enjoy.

Katie Spotz is an endurance athlete, author, and philanthropist. She's the only American to have rowed solo from Africa to South America.
Katie Spotz is an incredibly impressive ultra-endurance athlete who has undertaken enormous adventures across the globe to help raise funds for clean water and sanitation for underserved communities. Just a few highlights: at 22, she rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 70 days, becoming the youngest person ever to do so. In 2020, she ran 138-miles nonstop in 33-hours across the state of Maine. She was also the first person to swim the length of the Allegheny river at 325 miles, she's cycled across the country, and completed 5 ironman triathlons and countless marathons. Her next adventure will take her cycling across the coastline of Maine, 308 miles from the Canadian border to New Hampshire. Katie's drive to test her limits, dream big, and break records is remarkable, all the more so because of the motivation behind it. Worldwide, an estimated 2.2 billion people lack access to a safe, clean water source, and roughly 4.2 billion people live without adequate sanitation services, according to the World Health Organization. By taking on these challenges, Katie helps raise funds for organizations such as Run4Water and Lifewater International who work to transform lives by providing clean water, and at the same time, she reminds us all that we're all capable of making a difference in the world.
