Heather is a passionate coder and entrepreneur. She has experience working with Fortune 500 companies building enterprise-level voice, mobile, and C#/.Net applications. She focuses on external thought leadership, encouraging fellow programmers to present on topics outside of the office and in the community. She is also an international technical speaker, recently speaking at NDC, an early adopter of technology, and a conference organizer at KCDC, the Kansas City Developers Conference.   Topics of Discussion: [3:00] Heather talks about her deep dive into her local community to figure out how we learn and how different generations are discovering content. [3:12] We now have a multigenerational community and it's important to consider that there are now four different groups of people that learn completely differently. [5:40] With so many people from different cultures and backgrounds, Heather thinks that if we're not accommodating, we're not going to be able to replace ourselves. [8:23] Heather explains the importance of every developer finding their favorite documentation. [12:29] The great equalizer is that we all want to solve problems. Heather talks about the importance of letting beginners ask the right questions, and giving them the space to problem solve. [14:36] Heather describes the reality she sees from university programs and boot camps, along with the importance of having basic people skills. [18:27] Heather describes how time boxing and The Pomodoro Technique can provide a structure for productivity and can help you accomplish more without overwhelm. [21:36] The book Atomic Habits was a powerful read for Heather and she wishes she had read it before! One of the takeaways is that anything that is broken down seems more digestible. When you focus on just getting one percent better at something every day, your goals start to get more manageable. [24:24] Resiliency is key in software. [24:49] Sometimes what you're trying to get better at is not software coding at all, but communication and really listening. [24:50] Heather gives her take on if you need to have a University degree to go into software, and where she thinks the engineering field will end up. [34:42] Heather's advice for young developers looking at older work — keep in mind that it's possible that they did the best they could have at the time. Plus, one day that will be you, so try to have some grace and understanding.   Mentioned in this Episode: Architect Tips — New video podcast! You can be amazing, but if nobody knows what you're talking about, because you never mention it or you never speak up, that's going to limit you.” “With so many people from different cultures and backgrounds, I think if we are not accommodating, we're not going to be able to replace ourselves.” — Heather [5:15] “I feel like every developer needs to just sit down and find their favorite documentation that they've learned from and see if they can at least mimic that.” — Heather [8:23] “If you're not enjoying something, maybe you can suggest a different way instead of just quitting.” — Heather [12:04] “You aren't guaranteed to succeed. But you are guaranteed to struggle, struggle well.” — Heather [23:24] “Maybe it really just takes a slight adjustment or retooling instead of blowing it away and building something completely from scratch again.” — Heather [34:00]   Heather: Website | Twitter

This episode of Big Blend Radio’s “Music Monday” Show features singer-songwriter Deborah Crooks from the California band Bay Station. Hear about some of the songs and stories from their new EP “Beyond the Safe & Sound.” Named for the historic train station in Alameda, California, near where its core members live, Bay Station organically came together in 2013 after Deborah Crooks and Kwame Copeland began co-writing after years making music as solo artists. They soon brought in fellow Alamedan Steve Waters on lead guitar and vocals. As they did on their previous three releases, Your Own Reaction (2014 under their former name, KCDC), Go Out and Make Some (2016) and Other Desert Cities (2018), they called on Ben Bernstein and Mike Stevens to round out the rhythm section. Bay Station continues to blend elements of folk, rock, blues and Americana on their fourth recorded collection. Originally planning to head to the east coast to record with Stevens in his Connecticut studio, the band pivoted after the pandemic hit, staying local, and playing weekly porch concerts for their neighbors. Motivated by current events, they began writing new songs and shelving others that no longer seemed relevant to the project.  In mid-summer, they started recording tracks at home, sending digital files to Bernstein and Stevens to complete their parts. Out on all digital platforms, “Beyond the Safe & Sound” reflects on a year like no other.

South Korea’s coronavirus contact tracing puts LGBTQ community under surveillance, critics say

South Korea limited the spread of the coronavirus through aggressive contact tracing that relies heavily on data collection. But following a recent outbreak, many in the country’s LGBTQ community feel they’re being singled out.South Korean health officials gain access to the cellphone GPS records, credit card transactions and transportation history of anyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and then they release much of that information to the public. Text message alerts urge everyone who might have crossed paths with the patient to immediately get tested. In a series of notifications sent out earlier this month, authorities disclosed that a 29-year-old man who had contracted the disease had visited several bars and clubs in Itaewon, a Seoul neighborhood known for its nightlife. The Korea Centers for Disease Control warned that up to 5,500 people could have been exposed to the coronavirus based on location data reportedly obtained from mobile carriers. A message sent by the Seoul Metropolitan Government stated testing was mandatory for anyone who visited a club in the area between April 29 and May 5. The city has ordered all bars and clubs across the capital to halt business until further notice.Related: South Korean high school seniors are eager to return to the classroomThe KCDC states that as of Friday, it has traced 207 of the country’s 11,142 COVID-19 cases to the Itaewon cluster. Some emergency alerts identified the venues the man had visited. To Kim Yu-jin, these places stand out: They were all located in an LGBTQ-friendly corner of the neighborhood.“I had mixed feelings when I heard about the outbreak,” said the 28-year-old who identifies as queer and runs a dance studio in another part of Seoul.Related: Study tracks growing list of COVID-19 symptoms in real-timeMost of her students are other sexual minorities, she said. Kim Yu-jin says it was irresponsible to go clubbing during a pandemic, but she says she is “worried that these people would be blamed for spreading COVID-19,” just as South Korea was bringing down new cases to single digits. The Kookmin Ilbo, a conservative newspaper, was one of the first outlets to report that this outbreak was centered at a “gay bar,” which sparked anger toward the clubbers on social media and prompted calls to shut down these venues. To Kim Yu-jin, the reaction was no surprise.“Korean society already had a negative view of the LGBTQ community.”Kim Yu-jin, who identifies as queer and runs a dance studio“Korean society already had a negative view of the LGBTQ community,” she said.Related: World faces risk of 'vaccine nationalism' in COVID-19 fight, says CEPI chairThe dance instructor adds that the media’s sensational reporting of the outbreak and the way the government singled out these clubbers has triggered a homophobic backlash.Technology-based contact tracing is one of the ways South Korea says it mitigated the coronavirus’s impact. Now, the release of personal information that officials use to combat the pandemic is exposing a vulnerable population that would largely prefer to remain unseen.“The way the government is conducting contact tracing is a concern for everyone. There needs to be a better balance between human rights and privacy in relation to fighting the disease.”Lee Jong-gul, Chingusai“The way the government is conducting contact tracing is a concern for everyone,” said Lee Jong-gul, director of the gay rights group Chingusai. “There needs to be a better balance between human rights and privacy in relation to fighting the disease.”“Is it really helpful to release such excessive information,” he said.South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has attempted to ease these concerns.Yoon Tae-ho, a ministry official, said during a May 11 briefing that quarantine authorities were reviewing the movements and tracing the Itaewon clubbers’ whereabouts to “minimize their contact with other people.” He urged the public to “refrain from any hatred” toward these people. These reassurances from the government might not comfort many in South Korea’s LGBTQ community who are generally fearful of having their orientations revealed, some observers say.Related: South Korean movie fans watch the big screen from behind their windshields  This concern has been amplified as the coronavirus epidemic has unearthed deep-seated anxiety about sexual minorities, according to Todd Henry, who lectures in Korean Studies at the University of California San Diego.“If their off-the-radar communities are being put under surveillance by COVID[-19], there is no space or room for LGBT[Q] people to move and navigate Korean society,” said Henry, who is editor of the book, "Queer Korea."He explains that being outed can cost someone their job or strain relations with their family. And in South Korea’s conscript armed forces, homosexual relations between soldiers are punishable offenses. Henry says some human rights groups accused the country’s military of using dating apps as “surveillance tools” to track down gay soldiers. Some advocates say Korea’s LGBTQ have little recourse against discrimination at the hands of employers or the government due to the absence of legal protection.“South Korea has no anti-discrimination laws in place, partially because politicians don’t want sexual orientation to be included.” Kim Eun-ah, Amnesty International in Seoul“South Korea has no anti-discrimination laws in place, partially because politicians don’t want sexual orientation to be included” in any legislation, said Kim Eun-ah, an official at Amnesty International in Seoul. She says that politically powerful conservative groups and lawmakers prevent the passage of such laws. And while South Korea’s progressive president, Moon Jae-in, says he supports equality, he opposes legalizing same-sex marriage.Amnesty’s Kim Eun-ah says the recent spike in homophobia following the Itaewon outbreak coupled with privacy concerns regarding the coronavirus contact tracing could prevent some LGBTQ Koreans from being tested for the disease. Health authorities say COVID-19 screenings can be conducted anonymously.Dance teacher Kim Yu-jin says she understands why other sexual minorities might still fear getting tested.“The government claims it will protect our identities,” she said. “But if they can’t even protect our human rights, how can we trust them?”

The FP is like Breaking: Electric Boogaloo set in a dystopian society of young twenty somethings who think the world's flat and nothing exists outside the confines of their California subdivisions. Frazier Park and the 248 Frazier Park, a subdivision somewhere in the greater state of California where wars aren’t fought over color or race but by county lines and dance. Not the Samba, not ballet, no crunk, but video game dance battles. Hero is In The DNA JTRO, brother to BTRO and witness to his fall from grace, leaves the 248 in great hero fashion to grieve for a period of time unknown to everyone but the screenwriter of this film.    TRO Hearts Stacey In The Fp Fathers, be good to your daughters Daughters will love like you do But without the drink, fathers becomes a-holes and beat up on their daughters. The Redeemer No redemption song is complete without it’s maestro, BLT, to lead the redeemer to salvation. Through training and excessive hard work, JTRO will work his way to the supreme status of sleeping within the trainers quarters. Scrubs sleep outside. To be the best and covet a comfortable mattress, JTRO will have to be the best, but unfortunately his vision is cloudy — he lacks focus. That girl got him dizzy! A cage ain’t gonna do nothing for you but give somebody tetanus in this instance. After the hero avenges his brother’s death, a fight breaks out and somebody pulls a gun. This was by far the best directed sequence in the movie.
