I still have that today... I just get a feeling... it's always 100% right every time... everybody has it to... some people listen to their motherwit more than others" - "Back in the early '70s it was a different world... in school they could paddle you in class... in front of everyone... there was no such thing as non-bullying" - Being taught the Bible "I never really questioned anything... absorbed it into who I am... although I wasn't following most of the Bible to be honest at that point... I was more interested in having fun and partying... not really focusing on why I'm here, who I am and what my purpose is" - Last time used drugs. To celebrate Soma's electro sub label @avoidantrecords new vinyl release ‘Dark Planet', we have invited new Avoidant artist, DJ Godfather! Listen here: https://avoidant.fanlink.to/darkplanet With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there's no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard' Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism. Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards' turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit's Packard Plant. An intimidating force behind the decks, he's known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only. For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit's Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks. Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it's me. My one music that I'm passionate about. Love.” Tracklist via -Spotify: http://bit.ly/SRonSpotify -Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Slam_Radio/ -Facebook: bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup Archive on Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/slam/ Subscribe to our podcast on -iTunes: apple.co/2RQ1xdh -Amazon Music: amzn.to/2RPYnX3 -Google Podcasts: bit.ly/SRGooglePodcasts -Deezer: bit.ly/SlamRadioDeezer Keep up with SLAM: fanlink.to/Slam Keep up with Soma Records: fanlink.to/SomaRecords For syndication or radio queries: harry@somarecords.com & conor@glowcast.co.uk Slam Radio is produced at www.glowcast.co.uk

This week we speak to Keith Tucker Sr. A true legend of football in the DC area, we talk through his early years playing in Bermuda and then transitioning to play at Howard University the year after they had won the National championship. He gets into some amazing stories as a player at Howard and transitioning into the assistant coach role. We also touched on the importance of community based programming how he was involved in the creation of several of those programs in the area. Interestingly we didn’t go deep into his 26 years as head coach at Howard, coaching the Bermuda national team or him winning national college coach of the year (that’s for another episode). There are so many nuggets of jewels in this interview that it’s something to watch several times.... one of my favorite discussions was around his advocacy work for young players and his simple question to another coach “where would you play Pele”? Thanks for listening. For Footballers Only is brought to you by the DCXI Project. Learn more at www.dcxiproject.com

Then, Dyer takes us to Astoria, Oregon to dig into why its beaches and forests have been the setting for some of the Northwest’s most iconic films. Finally, cartoonist and storyteller Keith Tucker (Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, much much more) sits down with Dyer. 2:00 -- News: Nick almost fell for some Twitter propaganda7:45 -- News: Russell Wilson’s app goes bust9:55 -- News: The Northwest space economy19:03 -- News: AMC flexes on Moviepass24:10 -- Feature: Icons of Astoria40:25 -- Interview: Keith TuckerSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/nwnerd)
