Our passage today is from: Ephesians 2:13-22.Peace. With God, within ourselves, and with others. There's so much to talk about here in in our next Bible study on the fruit of the Spirit, as we acknowledge that almost every New Testament letter begins with 'peace' in some way. But today, we're rooting our conversation in Ephesians 2, as we press into what it really looks like to grow in both our understanding and application of peace. This episode is sponsored by Moody Publishers.A Christian publisher, they aim to resource the church's work of discipling all people, with titles spanning from Bible commentary and reference to spiritual and relational growth. You can find the book, Literarily by Kristie Anyabwile, recommended on today's episode here. You can find the questions to chat over with a friend from today's episode here.

We know that technically all Scripture is profitable, but it seems like some of it is more helpful than others. In Bible studies, we discuss what our favorite book of the Bible is and just sayin' Ezra and Numbers has never come up. Kristie is here to talk us into taking a peek into and fall in love with some of these more obscure Old Testament books. How do we answer the question "What's your favorite book of the Bible?" Why do you think we are automatically attracted to some books of the Bible and not others? Why do you think people believe the books that fall within the law genre are difficult to understand? Why do we need to understand the Old Testament in order to understand the New Testament? What richness do we risk not getting if we don't read the Old Testament? How do we lead others into loving the Old Testament? Ever felt a bit overwhelmed or even skipped over those tricky books of the Bible like Numbers or Leviticus? We get it—those laws and rituals can seem a bit daunting. But what if I told you there’s a way to not only understand them but to actually delight in them? We’re thrilled to have Kristie Anyabwile joining us to break it all down. Her new study, Delighting in God's Law, is all about making sense of these ancient texts and discovering their relevance for us today. Kristie will help us see that these laws weren’t just for people back then—they have something to teach us now. She makes the complex simple and shows us how to apply these timeless principles to our everyday lives. Also, if you struggle to find peace in the midst of these troubled times Jesus told us that we would have trouble in this world. But in Him, we can experience inner peace regardless of our circumstances. Lastly, Shawna learned she has a super power! It’s gratitude. At a time when she expected to experience deep sadness she, instead, felt that her heart and mind were protected by God. Could it be that was the direct result of her gratitude to God?Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We want our kids to love God and the church as much as we do. But when we force-feed faith, especially to teenagers, they can wind up resenting the church and losing interest in Christ. Author, mom, and pastor's wife Kristie Anyabwile shares how she's learned to take a step back, giving her teens space to choose the Lord for themselves while providing spiritual opportunities that fit each child uniquely. SHOW NOTES Don’t try to force feed your teenagers into faith; cultivate their hearts, provide opportunities, and ask good questions. Do what works for your family to grow spiritually together, and do what works for each individual child to grow. When you feel fear or a need to control, take it to the Lord. It likely has nothing to do with your children, but something in you that needs addressing. QUOTES “We don’t want church and church activity to feel forced, to feel like something they have to do. We want to cultivate in them a desire to do it. Certain things are non-negotiable, like worshiping together. But as far as the life of the church, be intentional about finding ways to give your children freedom in terms of how much they want to participate. I think as parents, a lot of times we think, ‘They’re kids, they’re in my house, whatever we do, they’re doing.’ Then we cart our kids around so much, they start to resent church and church activity.” -Kristie Anyabwile “Faith doesn’t come by force feeding. It comes by the work of the Spirit and the heart. Whether that heart is a little heart that’s 5 years old, or whether that heart is a teenager or older. So we cultivate hearts and we want the habits to be such that their hearts are tuned towards it, not bent against it.” -Kristie Anyabwile LINKS FROM THE SHOW Literarily His Testimonies, My Heritage Head over to www.ministrywivespodcast.com to check out the great content already on the site! Today we are going to be talking about “How understanding Bible genres transforms Bible study.” A lot of times we treat Scripture like it's all the same from Genesis to Revelation. While it's true the Bible is unified, it is also diverse. Our guest today, Kristie Anyabwile, the author of the book, “Literarily,” will be talking about how the Bible can be grouped according to key categories, called genres, that help us read and properly interpret the Scriptures.Visit our blog comment section to share your thoughts on this podcast episode:Coffee and Bible Time Prayer JournalCoffee and Bible Time Prayer BinderFaithful Counseling (sponsor) - Get 10% off your first monthPatreon - Support us on our Patreon!Instacart (sponsor) - Free delivery for new customers on first order!Vooglam Glasses (sponsor) - Use promo code CBTPROMO for 15% offWebsite: https://kristieanyabwile.com/IG: @kristieanyabwileBook: LiterarilyBible: ESV Study Bible - Large Print - Soft CoverBible: The Literary Study BibleFavorite Pens: Ballpoint - Medium PointJournal: Soft Cover, LinedHighlightersLogos Bible Study SoftwareBibleHub.comOlive Tree Bible Study Software & AppSupport the show
"We fear men so much because we fear God so little. One fear cures the other." This quotation from Puritan preacher William Gurnall drastically impacted Jeffrey Arthurs when he heard it quoted by one of his students. In this encouraging conversation with Mike, Dr Arthurs speaks candidly about overcoming the fear of man, the power of specificity and the importance of knowing the cultural context both of the passage being preached, and the lives of the congregation. They also speak about Haddon Robinson's Subject/Complement distinction, feedforward vs feedback, the hidden hope in lament, and variety in literary genres and their impact on our preaching styles and so much more!

"When I teach I want to keep in mind the GENRE of what I am teaching. I want to remember what the conventions are of that genre and how do they inform my understanding of this text? I'm trying to follow the logic of the author, how he structured what he wrote, and the questions he's anticipating from his audience and how he answers them." Kristie Anyabwile speaks with Mike about the role that genre plays in interpreting a passage's meaning, as well as the importance of feedback and peer review in the preparation process. She is married to Thabiti, a published author, bible teacher, and speaker. One of Kristie's first opportunities to teach was at a women's retreat. Despite not feeling fully prepared she took the opportunity and heard what initially seemed to be great feedback. Many of the women who attended complimented Kristie on her expositional teaching. Soon after, Kristie realized that there was so much more to teaching the Bible than accuracy. You have to reach the hearts of your audience. Since then, Kristie has grown into a more balanced teacher and credits a lot of this growth to the team of people she has around her. She's focused on finding people to give her feedback from many points of view. This team approach has helped Kristie hone her delivery to be theologically sound, astute and precise, while remaining relatable to her audience. As an author, Kristie also places a big emphasis on genre when reading the bible or preparing a study. Genre provides context, structure and interpretation to the stories and passages she teaches. Kristie emphasizes the importance of understanding how the genre of the passage should inform the process of preparing to teach. "The Bible is one story, but people often think it's one “thing”. So when they read it they say “well, you read the Bible literally.” But if we read the whole Bible literally we would not be keeping genre in mind because, for example, we know that we don't read things like poetry literally. Poetry gives us imagery, metaphors, and word pictures and they aren't meant to be read literally. So we don't read every book of the Bible literally, but we should read every book of the Bible “literarily”, meaning according to its literary genre. You get much more accuracy from how we read and understand the Bible when you consider genre."Kristie offers so many other wonderful insights Christians from all walks of life. You can listen to her teaching online or read her books for more. “As long as God is continuing to reconcile men to himself, he's going to be continuing to reconcile men and women to one another.” — Kristie AnyabwileDuring The Gospel Coalition’s 2018 Women’s Conference, Kristie Anyabwile, Courtney Doctor, Elicia Horton, Irene Sun, and Shar Walker participated in a panel discussion titled “The Gospel and Racial Reconciliation.” They addressed a number of sensitive, yet incredibly important, topics, from why conversations about racial reconciliation are still necessary to biblical passages that deal with division to how Christians should engage in these ongoing conversations and resources that are helpful for racially-tense discussions. This episode of The Gospel Coalition Podcast is brought to you by Operation Christmas Child. Food has a special way of fostering deeper conversations and knitting hearts together. There is something powerful about gathering around the table with other people. We believe that food is a generous gift from God, and it can be a means to point others to the goodness of God. Thus, food can play a significant role in evangelism and discipleship. There are so many ways food can help believers cultivate meaningful relationships both inside and outside the church. Kristie Anyabwile delivered a message during a workshop at TGC’s 2018 Women’s Conference titled “Living as Titus 2 Women in a Romans 1 World.” Utilizing these two passages of Scripture, Anyabwile presents the problem and offers a solution—that we are living in a state of emergency and we need older and younger women who will actively invest in one another, respectively. The solution, she argues, would not only build the strength of believers to stand against sin, but also serve as a platform for Christian women to participate in the Great Commission, drawing others in need of Christ through the representation and declaration of the gospel. This episode of The Gospel Coalition Podcast is brought to you by Crossway, publisher of 'Weep with Me: How Lament Opens a Door for Racial Reconciliation' by Mark Vroegop. Discover the meaning of Romans 12:15 that calls us to “weep with those who weep” as Mark seeks to bridge the canyon of misunderstanding, insensitivity, and hurt through the biblical practice of lament. Each chapter closes with a prayer of lament from a Christian leader, such as Trillia Newbell, Thabiti Anyabwile, Jarvis Williams, Danny Akin, and more. Our world is diverse. People come from different cultures, are shaped by different experiences, and have different preferences and passions. Even within the body of Christ, there are a wide range of personalities! While differences can be good, they can also create tension that can give way to conflict/division. Kristie Anyabwile joins us today and offers us practical advice as to how we can embrace our differences, navigate the tension that can arise from our differences, and actually learn from those in the body who are different from us. From miscarriage to mentorship: Kristie shares how losing her first child in miscarriage led her and her husband to the foot of the cross. Kristie's work in church ministry, alongside her husband, Thabiti, has equipped her with life experience and biblical knowledge that has her passionate about the Bible and passionate about mentoring. She is particularly encouraged when women mentor other women in a way that leads them to a deeper relationship with God and a better understanding of His word. This passion has also led her to publish a devotional on Psalm 119 written solely by women of colour. Listen here as Kristie shares her journey. EPISODE NOTES: Kristie Anyabwile remembers saying evening prayers every night by her bedside with her grandma. Her grandma was her first Christian influence, but it was only years later, as a newly-married woman suffering the trauma of a recent miscarriage, that Kristie came to truly understand who Jesus was. From the time she and her husband were first rocked by the gospel message they heard on television until this day, Kristie continues to live in the light of that same gospel. Three kids and a few moves later, Kristie's ministry in the Lord revolves around her family; Anacostia River Church in southeast Washington where she disciples and teaches women in her church, and joyfully supports her husband of 28 years, Thabiti, as he pastors the church; and the work of the Charles Simeon Trust – an organisation that seeks to equip lay folk with Bible reading and teaching skills. Close to her heart is the practice of women mentoring other women. In this interview, Kristie speaks about what that can look like. Kristie also shares about the recently released devotional she was privileged to see through from conception to reality. “His Testimonies, My Heritage: Women of Color on the Word of God is a collection of devotions by a diverse group of women of colour—African-Americans, Hispanic, Caribbean, and Asian women. Contributors include Kristie Anyabwile, Jackie Hill-Perry, Trillia Newbell, Elicia Horton, Christina Edmondson, Blair Linne, and more. It is a faithful exposition of Psalm 119 and incorporates each contributor's cultural expression both within the teaching and as they bring the word of God to bear on their lives. Readers will be thrilled and encouraged by hearing God speak through his word as it is expounded by these faithful women teachers, and they will long for more.”* ENDORSEMENTS: His Testimonies, My Heritage: Women of Color on the Word of God “A rich collection of wise, talented voices. My soul has been refreshed by this timely reminder of God's kind and gracious provision for his people through his word. It's been a while since I've read a book that so emphasized the sufficiency and relevancy of Scripture for today's problems. – KATE MOTAUNG, Author, A Place to Land: A Story of Longing and Belonging; Co-Author, Influence “His Testimonies My Heritage is an edifying book. What the essayists in this collection have in common are two things: they are all women of color, and they all write out of deep and moving experience of joyfully coming under the authority of holy Scripture.” – D.A. CARSON, President, The Gospel Coalition “This book is like entering a type of class reunion, where the various shades of skin are beautifully enveloped in the exact same grace blanket. I feel comfortable and in very good company. Our Father doesn't ignore our context or race-linked struggles when speaking to us about his testimonies, and he soothes us through each other. I invite you to join my sisters and be encouraged and uplifted by looking at his eternal truth through these eyes.” – AIXA DE LOPEZ, Author; Speaker; Board Member, Christian Alliance for Orphans LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The Revenge of Conscience, by J. "I didn't notice that there is so much that I learn from older women in my life by them just talking to me and telling me about their life." "She was the kind of person who, just in normal conversation, was pouring out wisdom that she did not even recognise." "All of us, in the body of Christ, can only (but) benefit when we learn from someone outside of our own culture." Can't see clickable links? Copy and paste this into your browser: tlpcwcw.podbean.com
