Acclaimed author Warren Zanes launched his incredible new book DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE - THE MAKING OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S NEBRASKA with a powerful concert and reading, co-produced by Outpost in the Burbs and the Montclair Literary Festival in May 2023. A few days later Zanes held a discussion on the book with the Outpost's John Hammond at Watchung Books in Montclair. This podcast features that discussion in full, where Warren recounts his working directly with Springsteen to dig into the depths of his creativity and motivation that resulted in the unique NEBRASKA album release. In addition, we're glad to feature three live performances from the launch concert - Laura Cantrell's 'Used Cars,' James Maddock's 'Born in the USA (Nebraska Version),' and Steve Earle's 'State Trooper.' The chat was recorded live at the bookstore in intimate surroundings - thanks to our ace podcast mixer John Paul Uva for cleaning up the room audio for your listening. And extra thanks to our friends at Watchung Booksellers and Montclair Literary Festival for partnering on these fascinating events.
Episode 248: For all of the sardonic honky tonk music of his early albums and the more character-driven folk music on albums like Upland Stories and Gone Away Backward, Robbie Fulks can trace a strong bluegrass thread through his career. He grew up loving Doc Watson in North Carolina, picked up the banjo and flatpicked guitar as a kid, and joined the venerable bluegrass band Special Consensus as he established himself in the Chicago music scene. He'd touch on the genre here and there, but now he's finally written and recorded Bluegrass Vacation, a 12-song collection that touches on classic themes and high lonesome textures. Also, a catch up from NYC with songwriter Laura Cantrell.

Twenty years of interviewing fabulous musicians is no mean feat and I thought it deserved some kind of celebration, or at least to be marked in history for posterity. So, I've recorded Cat O'nine Tales; nine special episodes of CATtales to look back on those early encounters where the recordings of the interviews no longer survive and the details only remain in written form. After introducing my guest, I'll give you a link address to read the interview and play some of their key hits for you to listen to whilst you enjoy it. Thank you to you the listeners and my fabulous guests for your support over the years, I hope you enjoy these special 9 Tales. Tale 5: Laura Cantrell's country vibe struck a chord with the Cambridge Folk Festival crowd with her soft, melodious tones wooing the audience. Her 2000 debut album, Not the Tremblin' Kind brought the Nashville-born and New York City-based performer considerable acclaim and I was interested to learn whether the American music industry differed much from that in the UK. This tale dates back to 2 August 2003, visit CATtales.co.uk/118 for the one with Laura Cantrell and sit back and enjoy these tunes. Visit lauracantrell.com for more information about Laura.

Turn it up! Take one step through the doorway and un-narrow your ears because our latest episode is waving hello! In this episode we explore four shockingly different They Might Be Giants songs off of their fourth album Apollo 18, and we are joined once again by Apollo 18 studio engineer Edward Douglas! Hey! Who's that commenting on The Guitar? Is it Jim? NO! It's LAURA CANTRELL, our special guest for this episode! Laura talks all about meeting TMBG and recording vocals on the song (her full interview will be released at a later date!) Then Jordan and Dave have been salivating, just waiting for the chance to devour Dinner Bell! Do the bell thing! Jordan doesn't want to change Dave's mind about Narrow Your Eyes...because they both agree! They discuss the relatable story in the song, which is only half as relatable as Hall of Heads. Is this our favorite one? Please don't try to leave...before enjoying this fantastic episode! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dontletsstart/support
Laura Cantrell in conversation with David Eastaugh Cantrell reached wider recognition in 2000 with her debut album, Not the Tremblin' Kind. The album reached the attention of legendary UK DJ John Peel, who wrote of it, "[It is] my favourite record of the last ten years and possibly my life". She went on to record five sessions for Peel and dedicated her 2005 album, Humming by the Flowered Vine, to his memory. In the spring of 2011, Cantrell released Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs Of the Queen of Country Music, "a recording she made in honor of one of her heroines, the great Kitty Wells", taking its title from an original song of Laura's written in tribute to Wells.

On today's episode, I talk to New York-based country music artist Laura Cantrell. Born in Nashville, TN, she came to New York to attend Columbia, and found that her abiding interest in country music helped her stay connected with her family roots. That interest was the motivation behind her long-running radio program The Radio Thrift Shop, which was on WFMU for thirteen years. She began her career as a recording artist as part of one of Mac McCaughan's first groups Bricks, and she even sings on TMBG's Apollo 18. Her first album of her own Not the Tremblin' Kind was released in 2000, and John Peel said of it: "[It is] my favourite record of the last ten years and possibly my life". Five more albums of hers have been released since then, and her latest is 2014's No Way There From Here, which is simply brilliant. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Charlie Poole (1892-1931), groundbreaking banjoist/songwriter, is known as the "Robert Johnson of country music." With his banjo-fiddle-guitar trio, The North Carolina Ramblers, Poole wrote and recorded country music's first mega-hit single ("Don't Let Your Deal Go Down") and many other classic songs that gave birth to the music of both Bill Monroe and Hank Williams. In this one-hour music intensive documentary, host Laura Cantrell traces the origins of modern country music through the songs of Charlie Poole.Charlie Poole - You Ain't Talkin' to Me.mp3
Back when they were in college in the late '80s, Laura Cantrell and Mac McCaughan were in a band called Bricks. That band didn't get very far, but Laura went on to become an acclaimed country singer-songwriter hailed by the likes of Elvis Costello and legendary BBC DJ John Peel. Mac soon founded Superchunk, who went on to 26 years (and counting) of indie-rock glory, as well as co-founding the phenomenally successful Merge Records. Even though Laura and Mac have taken different musical paths, they've not just maintained their long friendship, they've both stayed true to themselves and to their art, and carved out respected, sustainable careers. They actually still have a lot in common. So we figured we'd put them together for a Talkhouse Music Podcast and have them catch up, reminisce, compare notes and share a little wisdom.
