The incident was reported by another student, highlighting the school’s “See Something, Say Something” safety culture. STORY 7: Lawrenceville annexation bill headed to governor's desk Lawrenceville is one step away from a May 2026 referendum on annexing 5.3 square miles, potentially adding 19,000 residents and becoming Gwinnett County's largest city. The Georgia Senate unanimously passed House Bill 739, awaiting Gov. Brian Kemp's signature. If approved, the annexation would balance the city's tax base, reducing tax-exempt properties from 40% to 21%. Residents in the annexed areas would see no net change in millage rates but would shift to city services. The expansion, effective January 2027, would require $9 million annually for additional services, offset by matching revenue. The ticket, a Quik Pik, was purchased at Quick Mart on Buford Dam Road. The winner can choose between an annuitized prize of $478.2 million or a lump sum of $230.6 million, both before taxes. This win surpasses the previous state record held by a Mega Millions winner. The Quick Mart will receive a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Powerball drawings occur three times a week, and winners have 180 days to claim their prize.  STORY 2:   Norcross Apartment Fire Displaces 20 Residents  A fire at The Elliot Apartments in Norcross on Wednesday afternoon displaced several families. The blaze, reported around 3:44 p.m., involved heavy flames from a three-story building. Firefighters responded quickly, initially believing a child was trapped, but later found the apartment vacant. The fire was controlled by 4:19 p.m., with no injuries reported. Utility companies secured the area, and apartment managers coordinated with the American Red Cross to assist the 20 displaced tenants. Kolawole joined the Navy three years ago to find direction and travel. She is part of a team that operates the EA-18G Growler, an advanced electronic warfare aircraft. Proud of her service, including a deployment on the USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East, Kolawole values staying true to herself and inspiring her younger siblings. She expresses gratitude to her family for their support in her Navy career. The project, in collaboration with The Griffin Fund, will feature 300 units of Class A apartments across eight buildings. Synovus provided construction financing for the three-story garden-style residences, which will complement planned 55+ active adult housing and commercial components in the Lawrenceville Gateway development. The project aligns with the nearby 15-story Northside Hospital Gwinnett tower, expected to bring 3,000-5,000 jobs. Amenities at The Averly Collins Hill include a clubhouse, fitness center, pool, dog play area, and coffee bar. The apartments boast upscale features like wood-style flooring, quartz countertops, and stainless steel appliances. The development, located at 700 Collins Hill Rd., aims to offer convenient and quality housing in a mixed-use neighborhood. STORY 5: Georgia senators debate state pullout from accrediting American Library Association Conservative state senators in Georgia are proposing Senate Bill 390 to sever ties with the American Library Association (ALA), citing objections to the ALA's support for library materials on LGBTQ topics. Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Duluth Man Heading To Federal Prison For Trying To Have Girlfriend Murdered James Wan, a Duluth man, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for attempting to hire a hitman on the dark web to murder his girlfriend in 2022. Wan pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced this week. The FBI intervened, protecting the girlfriend and arresting Wan when they discovered his arrangement. Wan used a dark web marketplace, paying $8,000 in Bitcoin for the hit. Despite attempting to conceal his intentions electronically, Wan's plot was foiled, and he admitted to the crime when questioned by the FBI. The sentencing underscores law enforcement's commitment to thwarting violent acts. STORY 2: Woman claims doctors misdiagnosed brain tumor as perimenopause Pippa Griffiths, 45, initially attributed migraines, brain fog, fatigue, and stress to perimenopause but later discovered a brain tumor was causing the symptoms. After waking up with facial numbness, an MRI scan revealed a meningioma. Pippa underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and though aware it may grow back, she opted against further treatment due to potential side effects. Pippa, now participating in a charity event for Brain Tumour Research, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about brain tumors and hopes for kinder treatments and, ultimately, a cure. STORY 3: Steve Knudsen, Karen Watkins Picked To Lead Gwinnett School Board Steve Knudsen has been appointed as the Gwinnett County Board of Education's chairman for 2024, following his two-year tenure as vice chairman. The appointment was made through a 4-1 vote, with Tarece Johnson-Morgan opposing. Johnson-Morgan nominated Adrienne Simmons for the position, but the nomination lacked a second. Larimer Design Architecture, known for projects at Truist Park and Petco Park, designed the Coca-Cola Front Porch. Food service will be available within the Front Porch area, creating a space for fans to eat and stay during the entire game. The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, which works with member states to smooth out complexities in sales tax systems, adopted the term "menstrual discharge collection devices" to provide a uniform definition for tampons and other period products. Advocates argue that ending the discriminatory tax would not significantly impact state revenues and point to Georgia being one of the few states still taxing such products. Gwinnett Stripers Saw Highest Attendance Since 2015 in Successful Season The Gwinnett Stripers, a Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, marked a triumphant 2023 season with a record-breaking attendance of 231,044 fans at 71 home games in Coolray Field. This represents the highest turnout since 2015, underlining the team's escalating popularity. The franchise saw an over 14% surge in ticket sales from 2022, marking the first instance in their history with back-to-back seasons of increased attendance. Impressively, this milestone has been achieved three times in the past four years. Her soccer journey has been an inspiration to her family, proving that anything is possible.   STORY 2: Prosecutors Questions Lead To Mistrial In Peachtree Corners Gas Station Murder Case A mistrial has been declared in the trial of three suspects accused of murdering Bradley Coleman, a coach and Norcross high school graduate, during a failed carjacking in July 2022. The mistrial was declared due to actions by prosecutors during the trial. Prosecutors recalled a witness and appeared to lead her into saying her boyfriend had committed the murder, which the defense raised objections to. The judge agreed with the defense and declared a mistrial for all three defendants. The DA's Office plans to retry the case, but the mistrial may add tension to the race for district attorney in the upcoming election.   STORY 3: Lake Lanier, Coolray Field to host National Professional Fishing League finale The 2023 National Professional Fishing League is concluding its schedule from October 26 to 28 on Lake Lanier, hosted by the Gwinnett County Sports Commission. The event includes community outreach on October 25, practice sessions from October 22 to 24, and main events from Thursday to Saturday. Daily launch events occur at the Laurel Park Boat Ramp, with weigh-ins at Coolray Field, the Gwinnett Stripers' home in Lawrenceville. The event offers a $100,000 first-place prize, and anglers are competing for the 2023 Progressive Angler of the Year title, with Todd Goade currently leading the race. This monoclonal antibody prevents RSV hospitalizations by 70%, but supply constraints are limiting its availability. The only manufacturer, Sanofi, recently announced a supply shortage, even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended nirsevimab for every child under 8 months during the RSV season. The CDC's response to the shortage is to prioritize high-risk infants. The shortage highlights systemic issues in children's healthcare, and the article emphasizes the need to prioritize child health, citing the rapid response to COVID-19 for adults and the consequences of the vaccine delay for young children.   STORY 5: New blood test can help diagnose bipolar disorder Researchers at Cambridge University have developed a blood test to help diagnose bipolar disorder, which is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder. The test, used in combination with an online psychiatric assessment, identified biomarkers associated with the condition and was effective at diagnosing bipolar disorder in patients. While a psychiatric assessment is the most effective way to diagnose bipolar disorder, patients often face long waits and delays. The blood test, which is still a proof of concept, could be used to differentiate between the two disorders and provide quicker and more accurate diagnoses.     We'll be back in a moment Break 3: JACKSON EMC – INGLES 9 – Lawrenceville   STORY 6: 20-year-old Shot Dead Near Gwinnett Shopping Center Over the Weekend In the early hours of Saturday morning, a shooting investigation in Gwinnett County was initiated following a call to Northside Hospital's Sandy Springs campus. The hospital contacted police after friends brought in a 20-year-old man from Norcross with a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries. Detectives believe the shooting occurred at a business along Jimmy Carter Boulevard, although the victim's identity has not been released. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers, which offers a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment.   STORY 7: Economic Signals: Understanding the Leading Economic Indicators The U.S. economy presents mixed signals, with some indicators suggesting a recession while others show growth. To make economic predictions, financial analysts and economists rely on the Leading Economic Indicators (LEI). The LEI, published by The Conference Board, combines 10 data sources, both financial and non-financial, such as the S&P 500 Index, unemployment claims, and average consumer expectations. These components cover various aspects of economic activity and provide insight into future economic conditions. However, the LEI is not a perfect system, as it doesn't provide precise timing for economic changes, and indicators can fluctuate without leading to a recession. Instead, Perdue is urging both parties to resolve the matter through conversation. The Faculty Senate had asked the university system to mediate the dispute, but Perdue and USG Chief Academic Officer Ashwani Monga rejected that request, stating that discussions should be directly between the Faculty Senate and GGC leadership. A no-confidence vote would signal dissatisfaction with the administration but doesn't have the power to remove Joseph from her position..........…..read more at gwinnettdailypost.com STORY 2: GCPS School Absenteeism Gwinnett County Public Schools has reported a doubling of chronic absenteeism across the district since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% of enrolled school days during the year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or not. GCPS officials see it as a significant challenge to student performance and noted that students who are chronically absent perform significantly below their peers who regularly attend school. While chronic absenteeism is highest in high schools, Gwinnett's elementary schools also see high levels, particularly among kindergartners. Demographically, Hispanic students have the highest percentage of chronic absences, followed by American Indian, multiracial, Black, White, and Asian students. GCPS is implementing a multi-tiered approach to address chronic absenteeism, including preventative measures and awareness campaigns.   STORY 3: Gwinnett police working to identify suspect accused of breaking into urgent care Gwinnett County police are searching for a suspect who burglarized an urgent care facility and a neighboring business in Duluth. The break-ins occurred on September 28, with the suspect entering North Georgia Urgent Care and a nearby business, stealing approximately $7,200. The suspect, described as a black male wearing a gray hoodie and black sweatpants, remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact detectives at 770-513-5300 or report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. Emanuel Rene Esfahani, 20, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with five felony counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, along with other charges including reckless driving and racing on highways. The crash occurred when Esfahani, driving an Infiniti G35, was racing another vehicle on an exit ramp at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The Infiniti swerved to avoid a box truck, leading to a collision with the other vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma, causing it to roll over and fall from the ramp. Lawrenceville Man Theft   Gwinnett County police have identified John Casey Rooks, a 37-year-old Lawrenceville resident, as the suspect who stole a $2,000 watch from Kay Jewelers at Sugarloaf Mills in May. Rooks has been charged with felony theft by shoplifting and is currently in Gwinnett County Jail on unrelated charges. He was first arrested on May 22 for misdemeanor probation violations but was released on June 6. Later, on August 15, Suwanee police arrested him on charges related to the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and tampering with evidence. The shoplifting charge was added on August 24, with a $3,500 bail set, while no bail is available for the controlled substance and tampering with evidence charges.....…….. read more at gwinnettdailypost.com   STORY 2: State officials will install median on Duluth Highway near Northside Gwinnett   The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a $5.9 million construction contract to Summit Construction and Development LLC to install a median on Duluth Highway, east of State Route 316 near Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville. The project aims to improve 0.5 miles of Duluth Highway by replacing the existing two-way left turn lane with a raised skinny median. This change will limit left turns to specific intersections, including Medical Center Boulevard, Hurricane Shoals Road, and the intersection where Professional Drive becomes Phillip Boulevard. The goal is to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes in the area. The exact construction start and completion dates are not yet available, and the project also includes sidewalk installation and curb/gutter improvements.   Story 3: Lilburn appoints longtime police department member as new chief Chris Dusik, a law enforcement veteran with 20 years of experience, was appointed as the new chief of the Lilburn Police Department in Gwinnett County. The incident happened around 10 p.m. Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots, and when officers arrived, they discovered a deceased man in the breezeway of one of the buildings. It's believed that the victim may have sought help from residents before collapsing. A blood trail was found leading from the apartments to nearby woods. With a score of 99.95 out of 100, GSMST also ranked 19th nationally and 10th among STEM schools in the United States. The evaluation process considers factors like college readiness, reading and math proficiency, graduation rates, and more. Sam Devroye, a first-time skater for the “Disney On Ice” tour, spoke positively about his experience so far in a recent phone interview. Devroye said that he was proud of his achievements and that he has grown a lot during the tour. He also shared that he hopes to one day win a role as a featured skater. Devroye's passion for skating began when he was 15, and he sees himself doing it for quite some time. As an ensemble skater, he is featured in several numbers during the show, including “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast” and “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid. Police in Gwinnett County are seeking Jose Antonio Cruz and Tabitha Katurhia Weaver on felony shoplifting warrants. The two allegedly stole over $5,000 worth of allergy medications and bins from two Publix stores in March. The city of Lilburn has adopted an updated livable centers initiative (LCI) plan aimed at improving mobility and access to jobs and services in the Lilburn Community Improvement District (CID) area and other parts of the city. Road and transit improvements outlined in the LCI plan would become eligible for funding once the Improvements and Traffic Management Study for the Lawrenceville Highway corridor is finished. The plan designates several greenspace areas throughout the CID footprint, making it easier for Lilburn residents to be within a 10-minute walk from a trail access point or pocket park. Disney Concerts has announced a 45-city tour for "Encanto: The Sing-Along Film Concert," including a stop at Atlanta's Fox Theatre on November 8th. The event will feature a live band performing all the music from the Academy Award-winning film while the full movie is shown, and attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters. The "Encanto" soundtrack, featuring eight original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, held the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 album chart for nine non-consecutive weeks. Former Atlanta Hawks player, Brandon Goodwin, was arrested on April 5 for speeding and reckless driving in Duluth. According to a police report, Goodwin was driving more than 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. A police officer used LIDAR to confirm Goodwin was traveling at 113 mph at one point. Goodwin, who played guard for the Hawks during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons and for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, was released on bond the same day. Goodwin led Norcross High School to a state championship in basketball during the 2012-13 season, earning him the Daily Post Player of the Year award. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating an accident involving a Gwinnett County police officer which resulted in the death of a Lawrenceville man in unincorporated Norcross over the weekend. Police said Ramon Perez , was walking on Brook Hollow Parkway, near Mitchell Road, at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday when a West Precinct officer came down Brook Hollow in his vehicle and hit Perez. Following the collision, the officer immediately began to render aid. The pedestrian later died as a result of his injuries. Georgia State Patrol was requested to investigate the collision. The GCPD Accident Investigation Unit responded to assist. Gwinnett Police have not released the officer's name, but they did say he sustained a minor injury in the accident. Gwinnett County police are seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect who robbed a gas station near Norcross on February 13. According to Cpl. Ryan Winderweedle, the suspect demanded money from the cashier and displayed a silver and black handgun. When the cashier began to comply, a scuffle broke out, and the suspect fled the scene with cash in hand. The victim described the suspect as wearing a black hoodie, dark ski mask, blue latex gloves, blue socks, and dark sandals. Police have obtained security camera footage but need help identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers. The Gwinnett Stripers are hosting their first six-game homestand of the season from this week, featuring a series against the Memphis Redbirds. The homestand started with an Education Day on Tuesday and continued with Faith & Family Night on Friday, and a giveaway of Atlanta Black Crackers T-Shirt on Saturday as part of Jackie Robinson Day festivities. The Atlanta Black Crackers were a professional baseball team of black players in early to mid-20th century, before Jackie Robinson broke the MLB's color barrier. Baseball teams across the Majors and Minors will celebrate Robinson's legacy this weekend. All Major League players will even wear his famed number 42, which has been retired throughout the MLB. An area quarterback has committed to the Furman Paladins.   The Duluth food pantry in Georgia has received funding and food donations from two organizations, the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Humanity First USA. After two years of support from the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Humanity First USA has provided funding to help the food pantry acquire a warehouse and support approximately 100 families per month. The food pantry operates on an appointment-based system, and the Duluth volunteers have served over 25,000 individuals in their drive-through operation. The pantry is planning to work with the Atlanta Community Food Bank again in the near future. Burnette Elementary School in Suwanee, Georgia has been chosen as one of seven schools to receive a School Crashers grant from the Georgia United Foundation, in partnership with Georgia United Credit Union. School Crashers is a community service program that offers accredited K-12 schools in Georgia the opportunity to apply for a school facility makeover. The program aims to improve the learning environment for students, faculty, and staff. Burnette Elementary was chosen after submitting an application, which included a photograph and an essay explaining why their school should receive a makeover. The improvements to be made include a sensory room to help students with various learning disabilities. The Gwinnett Stripers have added new seafood dishes to the menus at CoolRay Field, as well as other menu items, to reflect its fish-themed name and logo. The change was initiated by Coolray Field Chef Jamerius "Chef Jay" Sims, who noticed a lack of seafood items in the stadium's eateries. The three new seafood dishes include catfish baskets, fish tacos, and crab cake sandwiches. Other new items on the menu include Cuban sandwiches, home-brewed sweet tea, buffalo chicken philly, walking taco, blooming onion petals, and more. More than 130 students recently attended the Olifer Math Competition held at Georgia Gwinnett College in honor of the late Dr. Andrei Olifer, a mathematics professor who founded and organized the competition. Olifer's daughter, Maria, said her father wanted to inspire an interest in math, education, and learning, and the competition serves as a fun and engaging way to accomplish those goals. The Olifer Competition is open to students from first through 10th grade and continues to grow in popularity. Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent Calvin Watts will remain in charge of Georgia's largest school system through at least the end of June 2025, the county's school board decided Tuesday night. The school board voted 4-1 to give Watts a two-year extension on his contract, which had previously been set to expire this summer. Board Chairwoman Tarece Johnson cast the lone vote against extending Watts' contract. After the called meeting, Watts told reporters that he is "ready to continue to stay laser-focused on the academic, the behavioral, and the social well-being of each and every student" in the district. A statue of Martin Luther King Jr. will be unveiled on Saturday at Rodney Cook Sr. Peace Park in Atlanta's Historic Vine City, as part of a festive day that includes a Peace Walk and awards to local leaders. The statue was designed and sculpted by Georgia artists Kathy Fincher and Stan Mullins and commissioned by several local and national philanthropists, including Clyde Strickland, a Gwinnett philanthropist. The statue shows Dr. King delivering his iconic “I've Been to the Mountaintop” speech. The Stripers are the first professional baseball team in metro Atlanta to open their season at home this year, as the Atlanta Braves opened their season yesterday on the road in Washington, DC. Gwinnett County Public Schools in Georgia plans to add an extra $1,000 to the $2,000 raise that state legislators approved for teachers, resulting in an expected increase of about $3,000 for teachers' salaries. Additionally, GCPS employees not on the district's teacher salary schedule will receive at least a 4% cost-of-living raise. Compensation was the top priority for GCPS employees in a district survey of budget priorities. The proposed FY 2024 budget is $3 billion, with $2.3 billion allocated for the general fund. The district plans to add 317 instructional positions to accommodate an expected increase of 2,064 students. A Lawrenceville man, Jahir Alejandro Conteras Sagahon, has been charged with felony murder, cruelty to children, and aggravated assault for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, Rubi Maldonado Nava, and setting her body on fire in Oglethorpe County. Police were initially called to perform a welfare check on Nava but could not find her. Upon questioning, Sagahon admitted to getting into a physical altercation with Nava and choking her until she stopped breathing. He then loaded her body into her car and drove to Oglethorpe County where he set it on fire. Gwinnett County police are investigating the death of a teen who was found dead on Paden Mill Trail in unincorporated Lawrenceville. The 16-year-old male's body was found at about 1:05 p.m. behind a house located at 651 Paden Mill Trail. Police discovered the body while visiting the house to conduct a follow up on a missing person's case that they were investigating. The teen had been shot. The Georgia Department of Education recently released the list of AP Honors Schools — with 23 Gwinnett County public high schools making one or more of the lists. Several Gwinnett schools were recognized in more than one category. Paul Duke STEM High School and Mountain View High School made the list in all seven categories in which they are eligible while Archer, Brookwood, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lanier, and Mountain View high schools made the list in six of the seven categories in which they are eligible. Sedona, with 96 sightings, would be Number 1 if the latter criteria were the determining factor since Lawrenceville only had 67 sightings. But, it's sightings per capita that determined the rankings, and Lawrenceville — which is home to Gwinnett County Airport at Briscoe Field by the way — was Number 1 in that regard. The city reached the top spot with 144.64 alleged sightings per 10,000 people, according to BonusFinder.com. The sightings lasted, on average, 15.47 minutes.  Lanier High School has earned the College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science A. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have achieved 50% or higher female exam taker representation in one or both AP computer science courses, or a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meet or exceed that of the school's female population. Sallie Holloway, Gwinnett County Public Schools' Director of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, says the award is an acknowledgement of Lanier High School's commitment to inclusivity. More than 1,100 institutions achieved either 50% or higher female representation in one of the two AP computer science courses or a percentage of the female computer science exam takers meeting or exceeding that of the school's female population during the 2021-22 school year. In 2022, Lanier High School was one of 209 schools recognized in the category of AP CSA, and the only school in Gwinnett County to be recognized. Lanier has worked with its partner, State Farm IT, and the cluster schools to create a culture that supports more diversity in computing and other STEM fields and are seeing the fruits of this labor. Beyond the College Board recognition, Lanier High has always been well-represented at the National Center for Women & Information Technology local and national awards. The school regularly sees dozens of girls recognized at the Georgia awards ceremony. Additionally, Lanier has had five girls recognized nationally, including a national honorable mention for Valentina Diaz Romero and national winner Makenna Reilly for 2023 In its long and distinguished history, Buford High School has won untold state championships in just about every sport. And now the time has come to make some room on the school's trophy display for the school's latest state crown. On February 24, Buford's Game Day Cheerleading squad won the Class AAAAAA state championship at Columbus State College. It was the team's first state title in its four-year history. Co-Coach Caroline Parker said the competition – which began with 16 teams in the preliminary round and had eight in the final round – called on squads to showcase their skills in band chant, a crowd-leading cheer, and a routine that accompanies their school's fight song. The 24-member squad – which was selected last April – is made up of cheerleaders for the Wolves' football and basketball games. Now that they know just exactly what it takes to win a state championship, the next season will serve as a lesson on how to effectively defend that championship. There were six seniors on the 2023 team and Parker said she was pleased they were graduating on such a high note. And those involved will get to take a brief break, although it won't be long before the title defense begins, as tryouts begin in three weeks. The Maxwell Football Club named Mill Creek standout Caleb Downs on Thursday as the 2022 Maxwell Football Club National High School Player of the Year. Downs starred on offense and defense last season as Mill Creek won the Class AAAAAAA state championship, the program's first. The Hawks finished 14-1 with a No. 11 ranking nationally in the final MaxPreps Top 25. In a state finals win over Carrollton, the 6-foot, 190-pounder made 13 tackles and rushed for three touchdowns. He finished the season with 83 tackles, five interceptions (two for TDs) and 10 passes defensed on defense, in addition to rushing 57 times for 383 yards and 20 TDs and catching 36 passes for 422 yards and three TDs on offense. Downs graduated in December and enrolled early at Alabama, where the five-star recruit is expected to contribute immediately at safety. Downs joins past winners of the Maxwell high school honor that include Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence and Derrick Henry. Gwinnett County government and local tourism officials are investing half-a-million dollars in COVID recovery funds in efforts to improve security around county attractions and hotels, and to support arts recovery and film education programs. The county announced the $500,000 investment that government and Explore Gwinnett officials will make into the programs on Thursday. The goal is to use the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery funds to boost areas in the hospitality and tourism industry that were hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds were made available to the county as a result of the American Rescue Plan Act. There are three main areas that the funding will be spent on, including film education and training programs for high school students, a program to support nonprofit arts groups and efforts to improve security at the Gas South District District, Coolray Field and more than 100 hotels in the county. The long-awaited return of the Hometown Holiday Parade is among the highlights included in the city of Lawrenceville's 2023 events calendar, which was released in late January and includes nearly two dozen events. The parade, which has not been held for several years due to the COVID pandemic, is scheduled for Saturday, December 2. Also planned is the two-day “Around the World in the DTL” celebration, providing a variety of culturally-rich experiences and events in the city's collaboration with the Atlanta International Nigh Market. Also, the “Cultura Fiesta Latina” returns in 2023, offering a Latin heritage festival filled with food, dancing and music during National Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition, the “Live in the DTL” concert on June 16 will take place on the Lawrenceville Lawn as part of the Juneteenth Celebration. The city will tip its collective cap to law enforcement during National Police Week in May with “Light Lawrenceville Blue” and on March 10 the Lawrenceville Legacy Leaders Youth Council will presents it inaugural youth-organized mental health awareness event on the Lawrenceville Lawn. Events in the city are free to attend (although some may require pre-registration due to space limitations) and sponsorships starting at $500 are available. Legislation establishing regulations for the fast-growing third-party food delivery industry in Georgia has been introduced in the General Assembly. Senate Bill 34 is an outgrowth of a Senate study committee chaired by Sen. Elena Parent, D-Atlanta, that held several meetings last summer and fall to talk about an industry that has no federal oversight and only patchwork state and local regulations. Third-party food delivery was virtually non-existent before the pandemic closed restaurants to in-person dining. Apps including Uber Eats and DoorDash sprang up so quickly and grew so rapidly that health regulators couldn't catch up, resulting in complaints from customers of unsanitary practices. The industry also ran afoul of restaurant owners, who complained third-party food deliverers were running ads featuring their names without authorization, touting relationships that didn't exist. Senate Bill 34 would put an end to such practices in Georgia, prohibiting third-party food companies from advertising non-existent connections with restaurants and requiring them to enter into contracts with restaurants before picking up and delivering food from those facilities. The legislation also would require vehicles used for third-party food delivery to be clean. No smoking or vaping would be allowed inside delivery vehicles, and pets would be prohibited unless they are service animals. Food containers delivered via a thirty party would have to be closed, sealed and tamper resistant. Thermal containers would be required when necessary to keep food at the proper temperature. Parent's bill has bipartisan cosponsors, including Republican Sens. John Albers of Roswell and Frank Ginn of Danielsville. Democratic cosponsors include Sens. Harold Jones of Augusta and Sally Harrell of Atlanta. Fernbank Museum continues to celebrate its 30th Anniversary this year with special exhibits, giant screen films, themed Discovery Days, nighttime nature adventures in WildWoods: AGLOW, Fernbank After Dark adult science nights and more. Fernbank kicked off the year with the new giant screen film, “Fungi: Web of Life,” which opened on January 7. This film follows scientists to forests in Tasmania and China as they search for unique lifeforms, including bioluminescent mushrooms, that could help solve some of humanity's most urgent problems. “Wings Over Water” opened on February 4 in the Giant Screen Theater. Audiences can fly alongside three different types of birds as they defy the odds and migrate to America's largely unknown but awe-inspiring prairie wetlands. Guests will learn about the science of navigation, flyways, bird behaviors and this unique ecosystem. February will offer a vivid immersion into the science of color in the new special exhibit “The Nature of Color,” which opens Feb 11. “The Nature of Color” offers an in-depth exploration of the way color carries information in nature, including how organisms use it to find food, warn off predators and reproduce. The exhibit also delves into the use of color across cultures, where different colors can signal a wide range of meanings, impact emotions and ultimately influence the society around us. For more information head over to Fernbank dot org. “I billed myself as a triple threat: attorney, author, and artist,” Darryl Hines, one of Tannery Row Artist Colony's newest members, said. Yet at the “tender age” of 72, Hines finds himself totally immersed in one of these talents — creating works of visual art. Hines has accomplished many things in his life, but art has been a constant “companion” that never left him. His journey to Tannery Row has been filled with experiences, an array of talents, a variety of schools and study, and successful careers outside the art world. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, his parents recognized his talents at as young as five. However, he was unsure about making a living in the art world. Utlimately, he started a law firm while commuting back and forth to Atlanta to support his wife's broadcast career. While helping his son start a t-shirt company, his love for art was rekindled. In August of 2020, Hines enrolled at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and earned his MFA in 2022. “At the tender age of 72, I returned to metro Atlanta. Finding a studio space led me to Tannery Row at the suggestion of Carolyn Wright, formerly of The Lona Gallery in Lawrenceville.” He finds the atmosphere at Tannery Row encouraging. Hines has gained the interest of collectors like Hollywood filmmaker Michael Sherman who sits on the boards of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Hines is hoping to spark interest in gallery owners and museums in Atlanta and elsewhere, pursuing several artist residencies and fellowships, and hoping to teach art as an adjunct professor. The Gwinnett County Public Library in Suwanee and the Suwanee Arts Center are working together to bring knowledge about the visual arts and art programming to Suwanee and surrounding communities with a new program called Art Ties. Officials said the goal for the collaboration is to provide art education for all ages while encouraging creativity and engagement in the visual arts. The new program begins this month with the first edition on January 17. After that, it will be held quarterly. The first programs feature two Suwanee Arts Center Photographers: Traci Dickson, who will present “The Photographer's Eye — The Wonder of Looking Closely,” for children ages 10-13; and Gary Bowlick, who will present “The Wonder of Photography: Light, Subject and Composition,” for adults interested in gaining knowledge about photography. Both one-hour programs will take place simultaneously at the Suwanee Library, located at 361 Main St., at 4 p.m. Suwanee Arts Center board member Rhonda Starling and Radha Ashok, who is branch manager of the Suwanee Public Library, are the co-creators of Art Ties. Although the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band enjoyed a great deal of success with a host of radio-friendly songs, there's little question that the group's signature creation was the 1972 album “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” which paired the band with country and bluegrass legends like Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, Mother Maybelle Carter and Roy Acuff. The three-record release was a bestseller, yielded two subsequent albums and has been lauded as a vital link between Nashville royalty and the rock music community, lifting the veil on what was to one day be regarded as the Americana music movement. String wizard John McEuen, a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was among the key architects in the construction of “Circle” and is back on the road this winter, celebrating the group's opus with a concert full of songs and stories from the celebrated release, which is back on the charts thanks to Ken Burns' 2019 docu-series “Country Music,” an episode of which prominently featured McEuen, the Dirt Band and “Circle.” The celebrated guitarist, banjo picker and mandolinist, who in December celebrated his 77th birthday, and the Circle Band will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. Although the album has been around for more than 50 years, McEuen said its songs have long been part of his repertoire. Sports Turf Company announced it has finished the renovation of the recreation field at Rock Springs Park. The renovation included replacing the natural grass field with an artificial turf. The park is used by the Collins Hill Athletic Association, the Gwinnett Football League and the Gwinnett Lacrosse League. the renovation will enable the field to be used by multiple sports — including football, girls and boys lacrosse and soccer — in a variety of weather conditions. As part of the field turf replacement, Sports Turf company also did concrete work, replaced fences, installed new goal posts, and made landscaping, irrigation and stormwater detention improvements. The Braselton Woman's club is partnering with the town's community development department to display original artwork from students in the historic 1904 building. “Creativity stARTs Here — A Kids View of Braselton” is a collaboration between the club, town and local schools to showcase students' artistic talents. The first display began this month and exhibits will rotate in seasons and among schools. Fourth- and fifth-grade Panther Leader students representing West Jackson Elementary School helped create the first display of art that models and exemplifies the history of Braselton and community life. The 1904 building originally housed the Braselton Brothers mercantile store at the corner of Georgia Route 53 and Davis Street. The Gwinnett Stripers are once again launching a virtual search for national anthem performers.
