In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Lisa Katz discuss:Starting to build your book of business from early in your career. Providing value to your clients with a network of other service providers. Things you need to know when working with counsel. The playbook for building a book of business. Having the hard conversations to experience the growth. Key Takeaways:Everything is consecutive and cumulative, the more you meet with someone and have great, but shorter conversations, the more impact it will have than one multiple-hour conversation. It's not about the client, it is about the person behind the relationship you are building. The longer you network and connect, the more you learn and grow and keep the connections that fit you and you fit them. Everybody wins when you're able to connect and solve each other's problems or connect them with the person who can. Your internal network at a law firm is just as important as your external connections. "Revisiting conversations with the same people at multiple conversations makes sense because factors change. Take time to do that, even committing to a couple hours a week or 20 minutes a day." — Lisa Katz Find out more about the Mastering the Legal Clock and Thriving Event at: https://fretzin.com/events Thank you to our Sponsors!Lawmatics: https://www.lawmatics.com/bethatlawyer/Get Staffed Up: https://getstaffedup.com/bethatlawyer/Green Cardigan Marketing: https://greencardiganmarketing.com/ Episode References: Book: Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg - https://www.amazon.com/Lean-Women-Work-Will-Lead/dp/0385349947 About Lisa Katz: Lisa Katz is half a healthcare lawyer, half a finance lawyer, and all broker all the time. Welcome to BEYOND LEANING IN, a podcast designed to inspire candid discussion about gender gaps in the workplace. All too often, the “real talk” about the challenges that professional women face happens behind closed doors. Author Melanie Ho is on a mission to change that through her new book, BEYOND LEANING IN. She is joined in this podcast by co-host Carla Hickman as the two longtime friends discuss the ideas and research that inform Melanie's book. You will also be invited to listen and join the conversation with early readers, women and men across generations and a wide range of professions, as they reflect, discuss and debate the ideas in the book. On the first episode, our hosts give us a quick glimpse at Melanie's book, Beyond Leaning In, talking about the inspiration behind the book, the major issues it covers, why Melanie wrote a business book as a novel, and how this podcast will become a platform for discussion about positive change and impact in gender equity. Jump straight into: (03:40) - The problem with “just leaning in” - “It felt like the blame was being put on us, that the lack of gender equity was our fault.” (07:26) - On the three main systemic barriers in the workplace for women - “Why aren't the men told that maybe they should listen and maybe this is a point to lean out and to help amplify the voices of others around the table?” (14:51) - The opportunity gap and what makes it so hard for females to speak up - “It reminds me of how often in my early career, as a manager, I would frame my opinion as a question, instead of simply stating what I think we should do or what I believe.” (17:31) - Teaching through fiction: The power of storytelling to educate generations - “I loved this idea of novels that can help us learn and make sense of the world around us, and it was something that I actually didn't realize until I entered the corporate world, it was more common than I had realized.” (28:46) - How a novel will encourage discussion and change - “I think it's going to be really exciting to just get a sense of how these different groups are able to have conversations that they might not have otherwise.” Resources Get the book https://www.melanieho.com/ (Beyond Leaning In) by Melanie Ho Follow Melanie Ho on https://www.instagram.com/melanieho13 (Instagram) or http://www.twitter.com/melanieho13 (Twitter) Follow Carla Hickman on https://www.instagram.com/southerncarlachelle (Instagram) or http://carlamhickman (Twitter) https://www.amazon.com/Lean-Women-Work-Will-Lead-ebook/dp/B009LMTDL0/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=leaning+in&qid=1612913189&s=digital-text&sr=1-1 (Lean In) by Sheryl Sandberg TED Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18uDutylDa4 (Why we have too few women leaders) with Sheryl Sandberg https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Eliyahu-M-Goldratt/dp/0884271951/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_es_US=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=the+goal&qid=1612911488&s=books&sr=1-1 (The Goal) by Eliyahu M. Our surroundings can impact us on a deep level - our home, after all, is the space that we wake up to in the morning and that we return to each night. How can we make sure that these spaces lift us up and really enrich our lives? My guest this episode is Emilie Jacob - the incredible woman who runs the boutique interior design studio Stella and the Stars. She's known for her signature style: lots of colour and bold spaces. My home is testament to my love of Emilie's style and I'm definitely not the only one - her work is in demand all across the UAE. Emilie says: “Our home is the place I am going to spend every single day, so it should be a beautiful, cosy place that I enjoy getting back to at the end of each day.” We had a brilliant conversation about creativity and where it comes from, and how her chaotic childhood drives her longing to creating safe and beautiful spaces. Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/319 Are you struggling with shame because your Instagram posts don't get enough likes, or maybe you feel confident because you get tons all the time? Social media and the Internet shape our modern-day business conditions where we have all these opportunities for independent creativity that could lead to an audience and a sellable product or service. There's still a lot to learn though! Business is a lot like dating. It develops over time, hopefully to a point where your audience know, like and trust you enough to invest money in the solution you offer. But what happens when you do that and then you have another idea? Many entrepreneurs are confronted with this question sooner or later: do I want to do this, or would I rather do something else? Can I do both? It would be very wise to prepare yourself for this process of expanding, adding to or morphing your business. In this episode we get deeper into the heart of modern independent creative entrepreneurship, discussing what to do when you feel the urge to start something new or change direction. We also talk about why your career path is not as linear as it is often made out to be and why going sideways instead of upwards is sometimes the most genius alternative. We chat at length about the importance of being curious, but also when to get more serious and structured in your approach. If you want to push the boundaries, try something new and open yourself up to the best possible opportunities, join us for this discussion where we hash it all out! Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/310 Self-starting entrepreneurs are always confronted with having to manage multiple projects at once. Will you ever get to the point of sorting out all these tasks and responsibilities, and having a greater sense of control over your daily activities? Is it possible to start enjoying the process, even though the circumstances are not ideal? In this episode, we look at practical ways in which you can optimally manage your energy as an entrepreneur, always keeping in mind what the ultimate goal is and staying in tune with your true self and with what makes you happy. Today on the show we are joined by Steph Crowder and Jen Rao who will be sharing some of their tips and tricks for aligning your work to suit the lifestyle you want. Jen summarizes her story of last week, about how a stressful job led her to scale down and simplify her life. Steph also shares about having to make a drastic career move that enabled her to prioritize both her professional aspirations and her family, and about the importance of developing a clear vision for the future. We also talk about the difficulty women face in balancing their work and family lives, the silent expectations of the workplace and why you need to constantly check your internal alignment. We discuss the circumstances under which you would want to leave your employment, waiting for the right opportunity and why you could consider simply reducing your day job hours. In this week's episode, we get into the nitty gritty of being a working mom with Steph Crowder, a mom and entrepreneur who was fed up with the images she saw of motherhood in the workplace and decided she wanted to carve out her own space as a working mom. Steph was always drawn to meaningful work, and while building her career she wasn't sure how she'd be able to balance also being a mother, or if she even wanted to. Later, when she knew she did want to be a mom, she knew she wasn't willing to just accept the status quo, and intentionally began to shift her lifestyle (and perspectives) in thoughtful preparation for starting a family. We talk about getting creative, using your intuition to really figure out what's going to work for your family, and the incredible importance of maternal/family leave. For anyone who is trying to balance being a working mom, you cannot miss this episode! Steph is a gifted communicator and her journey will resonate with everyone.
