The Get Paid Podcast: The Stark Reality of Entrepreneurship and Being Your Own Boss

Ever caught yourself saying, “I'll get to ads… later, when I'm really ready”? Claire hears that line all the time. And honestly? That "ready" moment rarely shows up. But while you're waiting for the stars to align, you're missing out on what Claire calls the "stock market effect" of running ads: long-term, compounding growth that happens when your ads quietly work in the background, building your list and your revenue without requiring constant hustle. In this solo episode, Claire shares a story about a brilliant business coach friend who's been “almost ready” for years, plus how GPM clients like DL Sharon, Gina Knox, and Steph Crowder finally scaled faster once they stopped waiting and started running ads. This Week on the Get Paid Podcast: The real conversation Claire had (again) with a friend who's been “just about to run ads” for years Why ads are less like a launch strategy and more like investing in the stock market How one client added $200K in a matter of weeks from cold traffic, plus high-ticket sales with no sales calls What happened when Claire's own campaign flopped, and how feedback from cold leads helped her fix it How ads can keep your audience and revenue growing, even while you're offline or pivoting your business Mentioned in this podcast: https://clairepells.com/waitlist https://clairepells.com/getpaid Thanks for tuning into the Get Paid Podcast. I need your online presence to match your reputation in the industry. Today, I'm chatting with Steph Crowder, a business coach who focuses on same day sales & sold out group programs, all about her rebrand process.   While the scrappy business, DIY website approach worked well for her for a while, she knew it was time to rebrand because there were ways in which she was still holding herself back from being discovered. This is a joint conversation with The Courage and Clarity Podcast hosted by Steph. So Steph is also asking me all of her burning questions and I think it's a unique opportunity to really understand the how and why behind the rebrand process.    But we're not just talking about branding today! You'll also get a really interested dose of Steph's expertise in modern selling. I'm asking her questions like "how can we sell without feeling sleezy?" and she's asking me in return "when is the right time to rebrand?" I know you'll get a lot out of this conversation, so get ready to take notes! Today I'm joined by my good friend, and someone I've mentioned on the podcast numerous times, Steph Crowder. Steph is a stellar business coach with a really strong background in sales, helping me out with my own thoughts about selling. She went from a struggling sales rep for Groupon who was nearly fired for her low numbers to Director of Sales Training for all of Groupon by the age of 26. She then branched out to launch her own coaching services and programs, learning a ton about entrepreneurship and herself along the way. Today we get into the story of why she ended up temporarily quitting her business and what finally brought her back.  This Week on the Get Paid Podcast: Steph's journey from a challenging start in sales to becoming a top performer Why Steph temporarily left entrepreneurship to work for someone else again The pivotal shift that led Steph to rediscover her passion for entrepreneurship after a year hiatus The inevitable personal development that's required if you want to grow a business Steph's stance on passive income vs. 1:1 offerings The worst advice Steph ever gave as a coach and what she believes now How she figured out the real problem with her business model (Hint: it wasn't her business) Mentioned in this podcast: The Life Coach School: https://thelifecoachschool.com/  Dielle Charon: https://diellecharon.com/  Connect with Steph: https://www.stephcrowder.com/ Courage & Clarity Podcast: https://www.stephcrowder.com/listen  The Messy Middle Mastermind: https://courageandclarity.lpages.co/mastermind/  Thanks for tuning into the Get Paid Podcast! On the podcast this week, Lesley is talking about WHERE to start when you know you need some career clarity. Finding CLARITY is a process and a moving target. It's something you need to be working toward at all times and it is not an end goal. So many people get tripped up at this step. They know they want to make a change, but have no idea what it is or where to look for it. This podcast will lay out 5 steps to help get you started toward finding clarity on which way to go or what to do.Steps include:1.    Don't freak out – be calm and know you will be taken care of2.    Create your side by side Nature and Nurture lists and see where they intersect. This is your GENIUS ZONE3.    Determine your purpose and who it is you want to serve.4.    Do some self market research – what do other people think you are good at5.    Commit to change. Clarity follows action. It's time to try some things out.On this podcast I discuss other podcasts as well, including Cathy Heller's "Don't Keep Your Day Job" and Steph Crowder's "Courage and Clarity". The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 196: 4 Steps to Attract Yoga Students with Steph Crowder   Description: Attracting yoga students to our yoga classes is something we could all use help with. We are also coming up to one of the biggest times for yoga students to sign up for classes - January. This is when people make their New Year resolutions and want to "get back to their routine" or "take care of their emotional and physical wellness". That's why it's so important for us to put our offers out there in front of all these people, and having a simple process can help you get started - Steph Crowder (she/her) has an easy and actionable 4-step process to share.   Steph Crowder is the Founder & CEO of Courage & Clarity, LLC. She's a former Sales Training Director of a giant tech company who struck out on her own to become a sales coach & business strategist, helping thousands of entrepreneurs across all industries. In 2017, she launched the Courage & Clarity Podcast and grew her business to 6 figures in 9 months. Steph focuses on teaching her clients to sell with ease by building a “small but mighty” community who can't wait to buy from them through courses, and webinars.   Steph is adept at taking a concept like getting more yoga students and breaking it down into easy, actionable steps that you can put into practice immediately. Steph walks us through the 4 steps that will help us to go from an idea for our yoga offer to new registrations and real students. She also explains the biggest mistake that business owners make that keep customers walking right past their offers, and gives us some of her tips to overcome that.   If you're aiming to get more students into your yoga classes in 2021 (or even today!), this is the episode to listen to!   Key Takeaways: [6:23] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Steph Crowder. [8:12] What is the work that Steph does and who does she do it for? [11:40] Steph's four steps are covered in greater detail in her mini-training, Same Day Sales. [13:27] What is the big mistake many business owners make that keep customers walking past their offers? [16:18] Steph addresses the fact that this process requires some vulnerability. [17:39] Instead of thinking of it as validating your idea, think of this process as co-creating your offer. [18:52] Step 1: Identify your idea. It doesn't have to be something complex or difficult! [22:55] What comes naturally to you that people are always asking you about?  [24:21] Step 2: Locate your leads. Steph has a dirty Internet secret about where your leads are coming from. [28:05] Don't think about this step as pitching your network. Think about it as opening up conversations. [31:33] Step 3: Co-create your offer. Approach this from a place of curiosity. [35:11] Shannon shares a few examples of how co-creating an offer has (and creating offers in a vacuum hasn't) worked for her. [37:54] Shannon and Steph discuss why you should focus on uncovering the pain or pleasure point you are addressing in your co-creation conversations. [38:33] Someone's willingness or unwillingness to pay is a reflection of how well they understand the transformation. [39:27] Step 4: Tweak and book. Steph shares an example of how she used this in her own business. [44:24] Do it scared! You don't need to have a perfect offer before you put it out there. [44:53] What should you do if you follow these steps and you offer doesn't get the traction you're looking for? [46:42] What does Steph recommend if you're sending emails and posting on social media but still not seeing students sign up? [50:01] Check out Steph's podcast, The Courage & Clarity Podcast, to learn more from her. [50:16] Steph has some tips for you around selling. Christine then goes into detail about the elements of a winning pitch that gets the "YES!"Also provided is a detailed checklist of best practices before, during, and after the interview to nurture an authentic relationship that makes both an impact and income for you.------------------------------HIGHLIGHTS08:59 Choose 3 to 5 niche podcasts12:28 Create a powerful, customized pitch19:25 Include 3 to 5 potential topics, areas of expertise & a short bio23:45 What to do before, during & after the interview34:01 Making an impact and income------------------------------QUOTES11:21 "Look on iTunes for ones that have less than a hundred reviews. We do not have access to the actual data on downloads to be able to say, oh, this is exactly the size of podcasts that's right for me, but I find that number of reviews, that's a fairly accurate way of judging the size of an audience."15:14 "Generic pitches do not get yeses. What gets a yes is the same thing that gets you a job interview in terms of your resume, and that's that you customize your pitch to make it look like you're the perfect guest. Just like you're the perfect candidate for the job."21:09 "It's your job to look at the list of topics and interviews that they've done in the past and to make sure that you send ones that are in line. So if somebody is only talking about strategy on their show, don't send them something that's mindset-related."28:11 "Pro bonus tip: Look for ways to give examples and analogies in the interview that relate to the work that you do. This is called embedding or seeding and it's very powerful because, as my friend Steph Crowder taught me, adults learn from examples and from stories and analogies."31:44 "Go leave a review. This is gold for them. That is currency that they cannot buy for themselves and it really matters and its so easy to do on iTunes. Just go leave an honest review, they will see it. And they will also see your name."------------------------------More about Life With Passion:  www.LifeWithPassion.comWant to be part of our live studio audience for these episodes? What is the ultimate role of our community and the connections we make? Here at Fizzle, we cannot stress the importance of community and communication enough. For us, it is the building block and the end goal of almost everything we do. Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/319 Are you struggling with shame because your Instagram posts don't get enough likes, or maybe you feel confident because you get tons all the time? Social media and the Internet shape our modern-day business conditions where we have all these opportunities for independent creativity that could lead to an audience and a sellable product or service. There's still a lot to learn though! Business is a lot like dating. It develops over time, hopefully to a point where your audience know, like and trust you enough to invest money in the solution you offer. But what happens when you do that and then you have another idea? Many entrepreneurs are confronted with this question sooner or later: do I want to do this, or would I rather do something else? Can I do both? It would be very wise to prepare yourself for this process of expanding, adding to or morphing your business. In this episode we get deeper into the heart of modern independent creative entrepreneurship, discussing what to do when you feel the urge to start something new or change direction. We also talk about why your career path is not as linear as it is often made out to be and why going sideways instead of upwards is sometimes the most genius alternative. We chat at length about the importance of being curious, but also when to get more serious and structured in your approach. If you want to push the boundaries, try something new and open yourself up to the best possible opportunities, join us for this discussion where we hash it all out! Key Points From This Episode: • Why it's inevitable for entrepreneurs to come to the juncture of deciding to adjust or add to their existing business. [0:07:03.0] • People's natural impulse to over-control and how it limits and destructs. [0:09:23.0] • Being secure in not having security and allowing things to unfold naturally. [0:12:31.0] • If multiple focuses are a given, you're probably already navigating it. [0:15:44.0] • Viewing your career path as modern entrepreneur as a jungle gym, not a ladder. [0:17:50.0] • Releasing pressure by focusing only on the next best step. [0:23:30.0] • Transitioning from playing with an idea to recognizing that it's a viable business opportunity. [0:25:51.0] • Creating a semi-structured environment that still allows for flexibility and natural progression. [0:33:20.0] • How metrics are important in setting future goals and making key decisions. [0:37:17.0] • Being liberal with the kind of results you want when starting something new. Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/316 How has online business and selling changed in the last twenty years? How can we as entrepreneurs move and change with the times to keep staying profitable, inspired and current? Are there any rules that have stayed the same during this period? Our topic for today centers around the world of online sales and the way in which they have and continue to evolve. The internet has sped up the development of the way traditional sales have functioned and this increasing speed is exponential! In this episode, we break down a special guest's particular journey, successes and misadventures, selling products on eBay and Amazon. We also talk about pocket rockets, wooden statues, quantities for packaging, becoming more organized and the importance of listening for feedback from audiences and friends. The episode really drums home the message of catching and riding different waves as they arrive and how your enthusiasm for building a brand can take you a long way. Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/314 Are you a lifestyle entrepreneur or hoping to become one? How do you build a career that gives you a greater degree of personal freedom and independence so that you can spend your time living the life you want, doing the stuff that makes you happy? On the Fizzle Show we always steer you toward earning a living from doing something that you actually care about, or at the very least, not doing a job you hate! In this episode, we get into the intricacies of entrepreneurship, and we're not interested in what worked yesterday; we are more concerned about what works today — for you. Whether it's watching Netflix or hanging out with friends, are you digging your life right now? Whatever you are into, you probably need some skrilla to finance it and you need to be doing something sustainable so that you don't run out. Today on the show we are joined by Ramit Sethi, personal finance advisor and entrepreneur, and together we pull apart the nucleus of the problem for a lot of Fizzlers — obsessing over questions like, “Am I doing enough?”, “Am I making enough?” and “Am I stupid?” And that constant voice-in-your-head stuff about money. We also cut to the chase about what it is that makes people successful, defining what winning at life looks like for you and focusing on the lifestyle you want in addition to doing what you are passionate about. Ramit talks Steve Jobs, his spending philosophy and why you deserve to be compensated if you provide value to the world. There is so much game going around this episode, make sure that you don't miss out! Key Points From This Episode: • Why the “passion” answer to success was never satisfactory to Ramit. Make sure you listen in, as on this podcast, Matt interviews Everardo Keeme, who is a certified professional photographer and also a professional snorer. Everardo got into photography on accident. He was working a corporate job, loved it, won a trip to Greece and didn’t have a camera. Since he didn’t have any pictures from that trip, he bought a camera, started photographing cycling events, applied to photograph the Phoenix Open (having never been or photographed golf), got the job and has been a photographer ever since. He got into senior portraits when his daughter got into high school, hence Twelve Year Senior Portraits. He wanted a studio for senior pictures, hence Photo Fusion Studio. Everardo is very passionate about education and is excited about all of the conferences and workshops available now. Overall, photographers are very good about sharing information with each other. He’s also excited about technology and how that’s only going to keep making us better. Speaker 1: [00:01] Welcome to from nothing to profit, a photographer’s podcast with Matt and Kayak where each week they talk to photographers about what is working in their business now so you can swipe those ideas and grow your business faster. Matt: [00:16] Hey everybody. Welcome to from nothing to profit so today will be a little bit different because kyle is not able to join us today because she’s got a sick kid at home. But I’m with my good friend Everardo Akimi. He has a really fascinating story. So I think you guys will be interested to know what he does. First of all, he’s a corporate event and headshot photographer. If you guys follow them online, that’s what you’d probably see. Um, I know he’s also a certified professional photographer. Um, I know that because him and allison both did that kind of at the same time. And then he’s been the official photographer of the Phoenix Open from since 2010, which I think is the most interesting part because I’m a sports guy and that’s always fascinating to every week when you get it every year for a week when you get to do that. Matt: [01:01] But then you’re the owner of photo fusion studios and the twelfth and twelfth year senior portraits. So welcome man. I appreciate you being on the show. Yeah, of course, man. Thanks for having me on. I appreciate it. So I have to tell everybody a little bit of a backstory about when we went to sync together and I’ll throw you under the bus and totally embarrass you. But that’s how we, that’s how we start every podcast around here is we try to handle it. I’m a big boy so we all stayed. Joy verts has a condo down by where sync is hosted. So um, every year we go down there and we tend to stay at her, her condo, and you know, some people can make it every year, some people can’t or whatever. So at the last minute a bunch of people said they could go and enjoy, had already kind of filled up the condo. So what happened is that we started like having to like move people around a little bit and Everardo and I were the only two guys that were staying at the condo that day because I think mentioned Shaylon will actually, we’re staying in a different condo and uh, so we ended up having to share a room. So we had two twin beds and shared a room together. And I’ll tell you what, man, you’re the loudest store I’ve ever, I’ve ever hung out with.... Support this podcast

Hello everyone and welcome back to The Strategy Hour! Today we are once again joined by our friend Steph Crowder for a Boss Talk session and we will be discussing the role of mindset in defining success. These episodes are definitely some of our favorites and it is always a pleasure having Steph sit down for a dive into an interesting subject. We actually stole this topic straight from her and she dug into her deep archives and pulled this one out just for our listeners. We will really be considering how to get passed mindset issues and how differently we combat these problems. It is such a great question and we cannot wait to unpack it right here on Boss Talk! The discussion covers a meditation on different kinds of mindsets and attitudes and how these impact levels of success. We then go on to talk about grit, determination, and perseverance and how vital these qualities are in any type of achievement. The topics of nature and nurture are also relevant and a large takeaway from today is that we do not start on an even playing field but we do get to decide how we play the game and when we get back up from a fall. For an inspiring chat with a great soul-sister of ours, be sure to tune in!  Thank you for listening! Please subscribe, rate and review The Strategy Hour Podcast on iTunes. Shownotes: http://fizzleshow.com/295 What is the best way to ensure we do not make the same mistakes twice? How can reviews and retrospectives teach us for the future? How can you really execute the best type of post-mortem? During the life of an entrepreneur it is pretty much a given that there will be successes and failures over the years. For those of you who missed the last Boss Talk Series episode, we brought Steph Crowder of Courage & Clarity on and everybody loved it! We got such good feedback, that we decided to bring her on again. Yep, she’s officially moved in! So today’s question is, how do you maintain healthy female relationships? We’ve touched on this in previous episodes, but today we want to focus specifically on business female friendships. This is a tricky topic and goes hand in hand with the theme: Community VS Competition. So how do you stay in your lane and be friends with someone who is doing what you’re doing? When are you crossing the line of taking advantage of a friendship? And how do you know whether your own helpfulness is being taken advantage of too? These are the types of tough questions we’ll be digging into in this episode. We also share how we personally manage our business female friendships and how having the support of other business women has radically enhanced our lives and careers. By the end of this episode, you’ll really see the benefits of having business female friendships in your life and will know how to determine whether these friendships are in a healthy give-and-take balance. No more hiding, it’s time to get out there and take a chance on the women in your midst. Thank you for listening! Please subscribe, rate and review The Strategy Hour Podcast on iTunes. Today we are welcoming you to a brand new series that we are kicking off right here, right now! The monthly series is called Boss Talk and it’s an unscripted, uncensored, roundtable, brainstorming session between Abbie, Emylee and our lovely visiting guests. We’ll be diving into hot topics in the industry right now and will kick off every episode by posing a question to each of us in the discussion, which we’ll flesh out throughout the show. Today’s question is, “What are your thoughts on the phrase "community over competition?" And here to help us answer it, is the delightful boss babe, Steph Crowder of Courage & Clarity. Here in this series, there is no holding back, no sugar-coating, no censoring. It’s just us, cracking open beers and navigating important questions that you’re probably wondering about too… So, are you someone who is all for community, or all for competition? Or is it about striking a healthy balance between the two? But how do we do that and are authentic communities really possible? This is an important and topical debate across all industries right now and one that we’re not sure people are speaking about as honestly as openly as we’d like. This series is all about real, off-the-cuff, honest opinions and if that’s your jam, then come and join us! Thank you for listening! There was a time (pretty recently!) that I compared myself to biz friends who were rocking “strategies” and focusing on fine-tuning conversion rates. And when I found myself deep in comparisonitis, I had a wake up call. That’s not me, it’s not my strength. I’m all about the individual people. And transformation. And ideas that turn into core messages. Thing is that being strategic is more about being intentional than about using step-by-step formulas. That’s why I’m so excited to share with you the convo I had with Steph Crowder. You may know her as being one third of the Fizzle show or from her own podcast Courage + Clarity. In our convo, we talk about why the fear of niching is real (and bogus), why women building businesses need equal parts inspiration and instruction, and how she found her core message branching off of Fizzle and then built a successful brand around it in ONE year. Two things I love about her: her use of the word “ruthless” and her whip-smart analogies. You’ll see. ;) Announcements: I have one spot left in May for a 1-1 Message Clarity VIP Day. This is for you if you’re ready to uncover the next evolution of your message as you pivot your business or step into using your voice to change lives. Get Clear, Get Clients is here. Once you complete it, you’ll be so clear on what you do that talking about it will feel easy, exciting, and impactful. Keep listening, and you’ll learn: How to use curiosity to recreate that “I didn’t set out to create this business, it just happened” phenomenon Why heading towards what’s working and you’re excited about is smarter than being “strategic” and plugging in something that’s supposed to work from the get-go What different approaches led to a freebie that flopped and one that skyrocketed growth of her email list The difference between days you feel super-productive and others you got “a lot” done but wasted your day Links from the Episode Steph interviewed me on her show! Over this last year, in anticipation of my book publishing later this month, I've appeared on a lot of podcasts as a guest. One of my favorite interviews to be a part of was for the Courage & Clarity podcast, hosted by Steph Crowder. Love her. Well, Steph also released another conversation with someone whose story exemplifies so much of what we talk about here on the show that as I was listening to it, I was thinking, "The Bare Naked Bravery folks need to hear this. Wouldn't it be so cool to get to talk with her?!" Well, fate would have it that I was driving at the time and forgot to write down "Contact Catherine Rains" on my to-do list. But evidently, Catherine was thinking the same thing and contacted US! So you guys, this is gonna be a great story about growing up with a bi-polar parent, quitting your job for art, battling cancer, getting divorced, and then quitting your job again to go back into art full-time. Catherine Rains is the artist behind @TheHotelArtist on Instagram - go check her out, because not only does she have a phenomenal story, but her work is wonderful too. One of the things I love most about Catherine's story is how level-headed she is, which is really a testament to how not-chaotic bravery can sometimes be. I think it's easy to forget that even though you're accomplishing great and wonderful things, that you can still have your wits about you and not lose your sanity. So get ready to listen to a wildly sane and grounded story of being a visual artist with extra doses of hutzpah. Happy New Year, friends!  I cannot believe we’ve arrived to the finale episode of Season 1!  Did that go quickly or what?   In just two days, I’m scheduled to deliver our second baby boy and with the hubby down with the flu, I’m not quite sure that’s going to happen as planned, but at this point in my life, I’ve learned to roll with it – all the unexpected shifts and twists that life can sometimes bring and trust everything is always as its intended. So, I want to start off the New Year with you in celebration!  First of all, I have a wonderful interview out on The Courage and Clarity Podcast today with my friend Steph Crowder that’s all about setting good/better/best goals that has literally transformed so much for me this year. I know you know if you’re a previous listener of The Enoughness Revolution, so much of my worthiness used to be tied to hitting the moon when it came to goals.  I’ve always had high expectations for myself and would repeatedly feel discouraged whenever I failed to meet them, which was actually… quite often – especially when it came to hitting financial goals.  And maybe you can relate…. Feelings of failure were rampant inside my heart and there was always this mix of pressure and guilt that I wasn’t making as much progress as I thought I should be.  I constantly felt like I was letting my family down when I wasn’t doing enough and, to make it all worse, there was also a lot of comparison going on in there too.  And we all know where that gets us – straight to the pit where the voices of “not enough” are strongest that take us away from our truth and most definitely away from our power.  But this year was THE year I started doing things differently with this Good/Better/Best format and not only did I start hitting my goals, I started surpassing them super fast.  I talk all about it over on The Courage and Clarity Podcast this week so I’d love for you to go check that out!   One of my Best goals wrapping up 2017 was to sell out Wild & Holy Year.  As the cart officially closed at 10:00pm last night (which is the new midnight around here by the way!), 17 women decided to journey together for the bravest year of their life!  That means there are just 3 spots left as I walk into 2018 and my heart is so incredibly full you guys for several reasons. One, I’m proud of the way I held this container this past month, the way I practiced my tools of staying grounded and not letting the fear of the “what if’s” get in my way.   I believed wholeheartedly in the value of what we’re creating and instead of chasing people down to convince them how great it was, I instead sent out heart felt invitations for the right women to join me and they did!  Second, I’m so incredibly grateful for the ease that was present in the way I showed up and talked about the momentum we’re creating inside our community and why it is SO incredibly special.   If you’re a Wild & Holy Women tuning in right now, I know you know the deep level of connection, love, and support we have for each other.  I know you know the way we naturally start to believe in ourselves more and trust the value that we bring, the value that we are.  And I know you know the way we hold space for each other to show up as we are and walk this curvy, windy road of expansion with all it’s highs and all its lows.  I know you know how magical it all is to know how supported you always are.  And I’m so incredibly grateful to YOU and for YOU for helping me build a one of kind community this year by adding your magic, heart, and soul to the mix.  So from my heart to yours, I am especially wishing you a beautiful New Year full of gorgeous expansion!  You always have a seat at my table forever and always and I can’t wait to hug you at some point in person this next year however the Universe brings us together!! And Third, each of the women who have said “yes” to herself is a woman I cannot wait to support, cheer on, encourage, and bring back to her truth when she forgets so I can witness all the ripples she’s going to create in the world.   Wild & Holy Year has brought together a powerhouse group of therapists, coaches, helpers, and healers.  Some of them have been journeying with each other for some time and some will just now be meeting, but I cannot wait to see the way this group expands in their truth and is braver together in 2018! If you’re wishing you hadn’t missed out on joining us, the cart will remain open until Sunday although I won’t be actively promoting it.  There’s just 1 Crown Level left and 2 Lotus Levels left.  After that, the cart will close until mid February where the price will increase: The Crown will increase from $350/mo to $375 and the Lotus will increase form $150/mo to $175.  So tell your friends

What is your driving force? The ultimate thing in your life that gives you direction and purpose? For Steph Crowder, Head of Member Success at Fizzle.Co., her motivators are her 14-month-old daughter and Fizzle. Fizzle is a company that helps creative entrepreneurs build their businesses via online courses, and weekly articles, podcasts, and small business guides. Their ultimate goal is to set up individual business owners with every resource, and tool they need to feel supported by an understanding community of like minded individuals. It is because of their mission and morals that Fizzle has become Steph's north star and passion. She refers to herself as the 'Den Mama' of Fizzle because she is so invested in the company, and takes care of everything and everyone, from clients to coworkers. Starting as a customer of theirs, she joined the company as a part-time customer service rep two years ago, and took a 60% pay cut from her previous job as head of a department at Groupon. Since she has become part of the leadership team, hosts Fizzle's podcast, as well as her own, Courage and Clarity. When her daughter came into the world, her heart and dedication became split between being a devoted mom and an ambitious leader. She wanted her career and role at Fizzle to continue to grow and move at the upward pace it was, previously. But she needed to do so in less time, because she didn't want her daughter's life to be consumed by day care, and wanted to be an involved parent. She wanted to do it all, and compromise nothing, and felt she could do so with rigid scheduling and time management. She quickly realized that that was a no-go. She began to see that this way of thinking and living was being reactive to her conundrum, but not actually proactive in changing anything. So she started delegating her work load, and saying no to things that were miniscual, and weren't what she wanted or needed to be doing; such as getting trapped in email jail, and handling Fizzle's social media prescence. By eliminating unneccesary tasks and distractions in her life and at work, she was able to be the mother that she wanted to be and spend quality time with her baby. Stay tuned and hear more about how Steph worked her way up at Fizzle, how motherhood made her a better leader, and how her and her partners are evolving Fizzle with a fresh identity and purpose! Also, check out Steph's original appearance on She Did it Her Way two years ago! In this episode you will... Be okay with not getting constant feedback on your performance as an entrepreneur Learn how to merge skills as a mother into being a leader in your professional life Know how to delegate certain tasks at your job, and projects so you can focus on your personal or family life Learning other behaviors to increase productivity, as opposed to working harder and longer, and burning yourself out Discover what your business or start up wants to evolve to once it's hit the 5 year mark Not make your happiness conditional, and be happy with where and who you are at the moment INSIGHTS "There are a lot of lessons, and definitely a border between start ups and pregnancy, and also motherhood. You learn so much about business. I think business and entrepreneurship can teach us a lot about how to be the CEOs of our families. It's really cool to see how these two different systems can play together when you're doing both in your life." -Steph Crowder "If I have an activity...or a project that I want to take on, now I just stop and I say, 'What would be the result of that? Is it going to reach my number one objective, which is growing Fizzle?' That is my north star...I really tried to put myself in the driver's seat.... I'm just trying to support myself and show my daughter an example of what meaningful work can be." -Steph Crowder "Working harder, longer is not a strategy...if that's your sole strategy...you're going to hit a wall. I have not seen someone not burn out on that model, and I am an example of that. You will reach a point in your life where thatno longer becomes a viable strategy. It might work in the short term, but [when] you get to a point where your priorities change, it doesn't feel good to live from that place." -Steph Crowder "It's challenging, as well as incredibly invigorating, to be in part of a company that's doesn't know what the answer is...everything in your business is a hypothesis...even when you're as far along as a business like this...we have to test and tweak and iterate, and it's really exciting to be on the precipice of, where are we going to go from here?" -Steph Crowder "Get yourself in a place where...no matter what happens today I genuinely feel good...because inspired action is so much better and more effective...I feel like I'm doing more meaningful work...and that's a really new mindset for me to explore." -Steph Crowder RESOURCES Special Fizzle 5-Week Free Offer! In this week's episode, we get into the nitty gritty of being a working mom with Steph Crowder, a mom and entrepreneur who was fed up with the images she saw of motherhood in the workplace and decided she wanted to carve out her own space as a working mom. Steph was always drawn to meaningful work, and while building her career she wasn't sure how she'd be able to balance also being a mother, or if she even wanted to.  Later, when she knew she did want to be a mom, she knew she wasn't willing to just accept the status quo, and intentionally began to shift her lifestyle (and perspectives) in thoughtful preparation for starting a family. We talk about getting creative, using your intuition to really figure out what's going to work for your family, and the incredible importance of maternal/family leave.  For anyone who is trying to balance being a working mom, you cannot miss this episode!  Steph is a gifted communicator and her journey will resonate with everyone. Steph is a go-getter lady boss who has found some serious success, first within the corporate world, and even more-so outside of it. She knew there was something more after attaining the impressive position of Head of Sales Training and Development at Groupon, at the age of 26. While in that position, Steph created her own coaching business, Miss Corner Office, and has most recently found herself in the position of FizzleCo’s Director of Member Success. FizzleCo is an online business training community for entrepreneurs. Here’s what we talk about: Steph starts by sharing her story after college and how she knew there had to be more out there We talk about how she started her career coaching business Miss Corner Office Steph’s introduction to Fizzle.co and how she created the life that she has always wanted Exiting Corporate America and the 6th month window to leaving Letting go of the money and ego and challenging your identity Excuses we make to protect ourselves and limiting beliefs “Deep down, I think I just knew that corporate was not going to work for me” “I could not get past the idea that I would never be in control of my schedule 5 out of 7 days of the week.” “I felt like I was on this desperate hunt for an alternative lifestyle” “I just sat in my car and I was like ‘I can do this! If they can do that, why can’t I do it?’” Once you start challenging your career you start challenging everything else in your life “If you really do want something […] Once you decide and really believe that you can do that and focus on it, I think your mind opens up to different possibilities.” “I’m going to find the right thing for me that allows me to live the kind of life that I want.” “I was still feeling like I was showing up some place, not necessarily doing my life’s work, and trying to live my ‘best’ life in the margins.” From an ego perspective, the tank was definitely full, but from an intuitive perspective, my heart, and passion – that part just didn’t necessarily feel right. “I wanted to find the type of work that made me feel like I wanted to be in it for the long haul.” “I couldn’t have known if it was going to turn out the way that it did, but it was worth taking the risk.” “If you really want to design your life, you can find a way to make those tradeoffs and make it happen.” Book Recommendation: Daring Greatly – Brene Brown [Connect with Steph: at Fizzle.co, Twitter, Instagram (stephcrowder_)] Resources from This Episode: Thefoxandshe.com The Lively Show (Jess Lively) Smart Passive Income (Pat Flynn) JessLively.com/feelinglost Tune in more to hear Steph's story and how she did it her way!
