The Business of Meetings – Episode 256: Own Your Success: How to Stay Accountable and Get Results with Eric Rozenberg Today, Eric dives into the importance of accountability in achieving success. Drawing from his past experiences, he highlights the transformative power of accountability in driving exceptional results. Example from Student Days: Planning vs. Execution There is a huge difference between creating a study plan and executing a study plan with accountability. To illustrate the importance of staying committed to goals despite external temptations, Eric shares a personal anecdote from his student days in Belgium, explaining how he planned for his exams meticulously but still got distracted by a tennis championship. Leadership at ISEC: Board Accountability Eric learned the value of accountability through regular board meetings in his leadership role at ISEC. Working with an advisory board of senior executives from Fortune 100 companies, he and his team were tasked with presenting updates on their progress, addressing challenges, and aligning their efforts with the goals of the organization. Knowing that he had to answer to various high-level stakeholders, the quarterly meetings motivated him to stay focused and deliver results, reinforcing the importance of continuous self-assessment and course correction in achieving success. Business Leadership: Advisory Boards and Self-Accountability Eric applied the lessons he learned at ISEC about accountability to his entrepreneurial journey in his quarterly meetings with advisors, industry experts, and professionals from unrelated fields. Through those regular meetings and openly sharing his successes and challenges, he ensured that he remained focused on his goals and made informed decisions. That strengthened his businesses and highlighted the importance of transparency and external perspectives in maintaining accountability and driving growth. Episode 249, Own Your Success! Stop the blame game of others for not achieving your goals. We learn why personal responsibility matters. We are approaching the end of the year. Are you on track to achieving your goals? If you are going to fall short, do you know why? Have you identified the shifts you must make to get back on track? Over my 37-year career in coaching, I have discovered that the most successful people take personal responsibility for their goals. They are open to coaching to get better and make progress. Then, some want to play the blame game. In sales, for example, They list all the reasons they will miss their goals: the market conditions, the clients won't call them back, the toxic work environment, and some blame their managers for their lack of performance. I get it. It's human behavior to find someone else to blame for our shortfalls. That is called Fear. Fear of Failing or how others will view us. But what if we reframed it, and instead of blaming, we learned from Failing, the First Attempt In Learning? For instance, we can improve our communication skills or seek more training. Believe me, as coaches and managers, we want our team to exceed their goals. Our job is to identify where we can support and coach them. We must start being honest with ourselves and understand why personal responsibility matters. Personal responsibility is not just about admitting shortfalls—it's about owning your role in your achievements and setbacks. When you fully own your performance, you empower yourself to find solutions and drive positive outcomes. This mindset leads to growth, learning, progress, and success, giving you a sense of control and confidence. The Blame Game Blaming others, especially your manager, might offer temporary relief, but it won't lead to meaningful change or professional growth. By shifting the focus from what's outside your control to what you can influence, you empower yourself to make a difference. Here are three key strategies to help you hold yourself accountable and steer your career toward success: focusing on what you can control and taking personal responsibility for your actions and outcomes. Own Your Numbers. You must be clear about your goals and understand that this is the first step toward taking responsibility. Instead of vague objectives like "sell more," break down your intentions into specific, measurable targets. For example, set a goal to meet a certain number of new clients each week, grow your current accounts, close a certain number of clients each month, or increase your client base by a specific percentage over the next quarter. Having specific goals will give you a clear path to follow and allow you to measure your progress. This process will help you identify what's working and what needs adjustment. Develop a Progress Mindset Adopting a mindset of progress is crucial for personal accountability. It means viewing challenges or setbacks as opportunities to learn, grow, and progress rather than seeing all the obstacles. Instead of saying, "I didn't hit my target because my manager didn't support me," consider what you can do differently next time to achieve better results. A progress mindset is about constantly seeking improvement, being open to feedback, and being willing to change your approach if it's not working. It's about seeing every situation, whether a success or a failure, as a chance to learn and grow. The most successful people I know always seek ways to improve their performance. They are open to new ways of achieving personal and professional coaching. Seek feedback from your peers, not as criticism but as valuable insights to refine your approach. For instance, they point out areas where you could improve your communication or suggest a different approach to a particular client. By constantly learning and adapting, you position yourself as a proactive problem-solver, taking charge of your development. Reflect and Adjust Regularly Regular reflection is vital to ensure you're on track. Schedule time each week to evaluate your performance. Ask yourself questions like: What did I achieve this week? What challenges did I face, and how did I address them? What can I do differently next week to improve my results? Where did I lose focus this week? Did I let personal distractions get in my way? Reflecting on your actions and outcomes can help you better decide what needs to change. This process of constant adjustment ensures you remain in control and actively work towards your goals. Success in sales does not solely depend on your manager or external circumstances—it's mainly within your control. By owning your goals, maintaining a progressive mindset, and regularly reflecting and making adjustments, you can take personal responsibility for your performance. Remember, It starts with you! " It's important to say it. It's also important to tell the story behind it." Too many people overlook their achievements or feel uncomfortable sharing them. However, recognizing your own value is crucial for growth and opportunity. Especially if you are looking for your next career opportunity. During this episode, Katie and I discuss how to communicate recognitions in a way that feels genuine and empowering. Some highlights from our conversation include: Own Your Success but Stay Humble: When sharing your recognitions, be sure to maintain humility. It's not about bragging; it's about demonstrating how your accomplishments add value. Use phrases like "I was recognized for..." instead of "I won..." Incorporate Recognition into Your Resume: Don't hesitate to include a section for recognitions on your resume. Clearly outline what you were recognized for and how it reflects your skills and contributions. This not only highlights your achievements but also tells a compelling story about your professional journey. Storytelling is Powerful: When discussing your recognitions in interviews or networking conversations, frame them within a story that demonstrates the value you provided to others. This context makes your achievements more relatable and impactful. Make sure to the full episode to gain more insights and tips on how to effectively communicate your recognitions so you are best positioned for the career you desire. Do you know what one of the main reasons is as to why people quit when they are trying to achieve something? It's because they don't feel they are making progress. It makes sense, if you are putting the effort in but you aren't seeing the results you want, it becomes less appealing to stick at it. I think that one of the biggest problems that works against people is… They are blind to their progress. They are doing well but they just don't see it. A great example of this was with one of our runners this week. They were feeling despondent with their running because they felt they weren't making progress. When I got them to look at their running stats, it turned out they had just run a 5km personal best. If you want to have ‘stickability' in achieving a goal, you must become great at seeing and owning your own success. In this week's video, I share 4 ways you can become better at owning and enjoying your success, so you keep on your path to the growth you want.

Leadership guru and CEO of The Veloz Group, Adam Mendler, joins James in this new episode to share his vision for his podcast, Thirty Minute Mentors, and to inspire listeners like you to think BIGGER for your life. Whether you're still trying to dip your toes in the water or have decided to take the plunge, you will learn how your success is entirely dependent on YOU. “The formula for happiness isn't necessarily having a prestigious job or a high-paying job. It doesn't necessarily bring you fulfillment.” -Adam Mendler In this Episode: You will learn how the formula for happiness is correlational to the formula for success. Understand how failure is the gateway to success and why people who never failed can never be successful. Overcome self-doubt and roadblocks to success through a highly-effective approach taught by the most successful people who graced the Thirty Minute Mentors show. Adopt the habits that separate those who had enormous successes from those who have not had a taste of success. Adam shares the qualities of a great leader and the most critical component one must take into consideration when trying to mentor people. “Imagine that it is 24 hours before you are going to be born,” he said, “and a genie comes to you.” “The genie says you can determine the rules of the society you are about to enter and you can design anything you want. You get to design the social rules, the economic rules, the governmental rules. And those rules are going to prevail for your lifetime and your children's lifetime and your grandchildren's lifetime.” “But there is a catch,” he said. “You don't know whether you're going to be born rich or poor, male or female, infirm or able-bodied, in the United States or Afghanistan. All you know is that you get to take one ball out of a barrel with 5.8 billion balls in it. And that's you.” “I believe that people make their own luck by great preparation and good strategy”. Britney Breidenstein joins host Stephanie Gottesman to talk about the courage, vulnerability, and creative perspective needed to pivot away from a stagnant career. She shares about her unique approach to expanding outside her comfort zone, the self-work she did to figure out her new direction, and the tools she’s been discovering to help her along the way. Many of us reach points in our life where we need to make a change. Either our careers have stagnated, our priorities have shifted, or we’ve lost a sense of purpose in what we’re doing. Often, when we reach that point, we end up feeling stuck because we simply don’t know what to try next. Our guest this episode, Britney Breidenstein, has reached a pivot point in her career. Breidenstein is no stranger to accomplishment – she’s spent most of her career leading and launching programs to build up the Fort Wayne community, with her last years devoted to workforce inclusion initiatives, business development, and corporate training for Easterseals ARC, where she developed new programs, created more than 100 jobs, and placed scores of people with disabilities on life-changing career paths of their own. After a decade of accomplishments, though, Breidenstein reached a point in her career where accomplishments weren’t enough, and even though her next steps were not quite clear, she knew she needed to take the time to pivot, explore new challenges, and figure out where she wanted her career to go. She’s here today to share some of her journey – the work she did with Easterseals ARC, the creative strategy she’s used to get more connected to the Fort Wayne community, her take on building community and creating safe spaces, and the courageous leap of faith she’s taken to make space for her next chapter. So she started asking people to coffee – she stopped counting at 39. In the course of her journey, she got to know Fort Wayne in a new way. She joined the boards for Own Your Success, the women’s entrepreneurial community that we featured in our second episode last season, and Bring It, Push It, Own It, an organization whose mission centers around empowering teen girls. In the course of our conversation, she talks about a few tools that have helped her on her journey – a book called Pivot Point: How to Build a Winning Career Game Plan for Mid-Career Women by Julie Kratz, Dare to Lead by Brené Brown and the Dare to Lead Workshops taught by Sabrina Moon’s Problem Solving Institute. Her story is both simple and relatable, while also showing courage and creativity. Today, Breidenstein is working as the Principal Growth Strategist for UpLinked, a company dedicated to helping businesses simplify yet enhance their Linkedin presence through education, coaching, and management services. She still doesn’t know exactly where her career is going to take her, but has fully embraced the white space of this transitional time. This month, Andie Hines-Lagemann invited us to collaborate on recording an Own Your Success Working Breakfast. If you’re not familiar with Own Your Success or Andie’s work, check out our second episode last season, called Women are Supporting Each Other as Entrepreneurs. The topic for this working breakfast was collaboration vs competition, and while we were there, we invited the women who attended to offer some appreciation to women in their lives that have empowered them. This episode’s shout outs are from that recording. Both Own Your Success and Women Are: Fort Wayne are soon going to be launching membership programs, and the recording will be available to our members. Stay tuned for details! Our featured song this episode is by Mad Scatter Music, founded by Trinell to produce music that challenges the boundaries of jazz concepts, and the idea of genre-static music. Trinell is an improvisational vocalist, who explores the vocal "scatting" technique, made famous by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald. She incorporates "Indie", Alternative, Soul, & Classic Rock into a crowd pleasing jazz fusion experience relative to multiple generations of listeners. This episode’s song, “Bayou,” is actually about Trinell’s relationship with God, and how society tends to discredit an individual’s spirituality if they don’t appear to be a “traditional Christian.” She has always had a fascination with Louisiana culture, although I she’s never been, so she opted to write the lyrics as a play on words. She hopes listeners will find their own emotional connection to the song.Assuming life has resumed its normal flow, Mad Scatter Music will be performing at the Big Apple Jazz Club Series at Wunderkammer on June 14th. In the meantime, you can find her music on Spotify and Facebook. Women Are: Fort Wayne is a production of Monstrous Regiment Media and distributed by WBOI in Fort Wayne. Our show is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne and Silverbirch Entertainment. “Treat yourself like someone you love.” Raj Jana (27:43 - 27:45) Raj Jana is an impact-driven entrepreneur and the host of the Stay Grounded podcast. He’s also a keynote speaker and media host who’s passionate about using business to make the world a better place. After his mentor died of a heart attack just three months before retiring, Raj felt compelled to do something meaningful and challenge the conventional ways of how to own your success. “Watching my mentor pass away three months before his retirement reinvigorated my sense of purpose. I didn’t care how I was going to succeed as an entrepreneur. I just knew I was going to do it.” - Raj Jana (10:37 - 11:02) Raj founded JavaPresse, a lifestyle brand committed to transforming ordinary coffee rituals into extraordinary daily experiences. Since launching in 2015, Raj has helped over a quarter of a million people to use coffee for their daily fulfillment. He’s grown the business into a seven-figure company in less than a year—all while working a full-time corporate job. Raj’s work has been endorsed by Daymond John of Shark Tank, and he’s been featured in Forbes, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, and other renowned publications. At 27 years of age, Raj is the youngest recipient of the 2019 Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award for his influence on local communities. Raj’s company is an official partner of the Make-a-Wish Foundation and has donated over fifty thousand dollars to grant wishes to children with life-threatening diseases. After college, Raj worked as a petroleum engineer at a large oil company in Louisiana. He was making good money, and by society’s standards, he was quite successful. But he didn’t feel fulfilled. He felt like there was something more. He began listening to podcasts and buying courses looking for a spark of inspiration to try something different along the way. This led to him launching JavaPresse. Around the same time, his mentor and close friend passed away. This was someone who had given his life to the company and had been putting off happiness until his retirement. This tragic event taught Raj that he didn’t want to sacrifice his health and happiness for the next forty years so he could be happy “someday.” Own Your Success. Raj started waking up at 5 AM to work on JavaPresse. He invested in personal development, transformed his mindset, and sharpened his marketing skills. Every day when he got back from his corporate job, he would work on his business. Within eight months, JavaPresse had grown exponentially and hit its first six-figure month. Life is precious, and you don’t need permission to live yours. Raj learned critical lessons that can help anyone looking to take control of their own lives. Life is precious, and we don’t have to live it on other people’s terms. You can live the life you choose, and Raj’s podcast Stay Grounded aims to inspire people to do just that. You don’t need to know all the answers. All you need is the courage to take the first baby step. That will give you the confidence to take the second step. Your actions will soon be so massive that you’ll be inspiring others to start their own journeys. “When you own your success and let yourself shine, you give others permission to do the same. That’s what raises the consciousness and the vibration of this experience we have as human beings.” - Diane Forster (2:56 - 3:09) In order to be useful to others, you need to take care of yourself first. It can be something as small as treating yourself to a cup of coffee or taking a quick meditation break. Remember, you’re responsible for your own success, and you don’t need anyone else’s permission to live the life that will bring you fulfillment. Each week, we provide you with a mantra meditation, a fun, transformational way to apply the concepts in each episode. Tell yourself the story of what you want, without all of the limitations, and watch your life begin to change! Listen to this week’s mantra meditation to grow in self-love. Letting go of the expectations of others, and growing in the confidence and love of who you are and all that you are capable of, is the only way to truly move forward in success and fulfillment. Each day, we are surrounded by people who are doing the best that they can. Listen in to this week’s mantra meditation, embrace self-compassion, and extend compassion to your relationships. What is ‘Imposter Syndrome'? Impostor Syndrome is characterized by the conviction that you don't deserve your success. It is the feeling that you're not as intelligent, creative or talented as other people seem to believe you are. It is the suspicion that your achievements are down to luck, good timing or just being in the right place at the right time. And it is accompanied by the fear that, one day, you'll be exposed as a fraud. On this episode I have back on the show Dr Vanessa Moulton. I spoke to Vanessa briefly about this topic after we stopped recording our last episode and I was really eager to get her back on to talk about this. I have struggled with imposter syndrome that last two years specifically and was really excited to hear the views and knowledge of somebody who deals with seeing it in people everyday. What we spoke about in this fascinating episode: What is imposter syndrome. The gender difference when it comes to imposter syndrome. How imposter syndrome can hinder your full potential. The importance of flexibility of thought in this regard. How can you work on it? My personal mindset when it comes dealing with my own ‘Imposter Syndrome' How we create rules in our own mind and how we must define our own meaning of success. How validation and approval from external sources, i.e social media, can be detrimental.
