The first thing I want to say about Imposter Syndrome, two things actually, are these: 1) Imposter Syndrome is not a one-and-done thing; it can crop up throughout your career as you take on new responsibilities and rise to new levels; and 2) Imposter Syndrome can be situational. You can be fully confident in one area of your work and feel like a complete fake in another. Definition of Imposter Syndrome The Oxford English Dictionary defines Imposter Syndrome as follows:The persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills.Mirriam Webster defines Imposter Syndrome as: a psychological condition that is characterized by persistent doubt concerning one's abilities or accomplishments accompanied by the fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of one's ongoing success. Characteristics of Imposter SyndromeYou likely have feelings of self-doubt, a decrease in your self-confidence, you may isolate yourself from your colleagues, you may overwork yourself and experience burnout, and you likely have overall low self-esteem. In her book, Ditching Imposter Syndrome, author Clare Josa writes that the four 'P's of imposter syndrome are: perfectionism, paralysis, people-pleasing, and procrastination. In other words: Requiring yourself to be perfect in everything at all times, experiencing paralysis because of fear of not getting it right, people-pleasing as a way to manipulate the emotions of those around you at the expense of your own truth, and putting off doing something for fear of “getting it wrong.” Strategies for Overcoming Imposter Syndrome Here are 9 strategies to address imposter syndrome: #1 – Recognize that it is normal – and you are not alone. Particularly as you take on new roles or new job titles, you are “cashing in” your expertise and track record of success in one area for a bit of unknown in another area. It is natural to have doubts, especially in the beginning. Imposter Syndrome happens to most workers at least once in their careers, so you're in good company. #2 – Reframe your mindset. Imposter Syndrome is a result of consistently telling yourself that you aren't good enough, you don't know what you are doing, others will soon learn of your deceit. You've likely created neural pathways in your brain that are running these thoughts in your unconscious mind. Begin practicing new, more neutral or positive thoughts about your abilities, capabilities, how you've succeeded in similar situations in the past, etc. #3 – Practice self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is one's belief in their ability to accomplish a task or achieve a goal. Here are a few ways to practice self-efficacy: -Think back to when you accomplished a similar task or achieved a similar goal. How were you successful then? How can you utilize that learning now? -Who else do you know who has been successful in a similar situation? In what ways are you similar to that person – in terms of education, experience level, motivation? If they can do it, you can too. -Who can pump you up? We all need cheerleaders and doctors in our lives – and for self-efficacy, you need cheerleaders. This has to be someone who knows you well and respects you and your work. #4 – Focus on the positive. Pay attention to the areas of your work that you feel extremely competent in. Sometimes, the antidote to Imposter Syndrome is stepping out of the area you feel like an imposter in and stepping into your Zone of Genius. #5 – Celebrate your achievements. Keep a record of your accomplishments – big and small – and use them as evidence of your capabilities. #6 – Practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance. This can help you acknowledge your feelings, accept your imperfections, and forgive yourself for your mistakes. #7 – Get training. I want to be clear on this point: I don't want you to get training as a way to avoid doing the thing that is igniting Imposter Syndrome in you. Training, such as additional formal education, credentials, or stand-alone courses can help you have greater subject matter expertise in the area you have Imposter Syndrome in. #8 – Seek support. Talk to a trusted mentor, friend, or close co-worker who can help you realign your thinking to the things you're doing well. You can also ask your manager for specific feedback on what you are doing well. Coaching can also be incredibly helpful in refocusing on the things you're good at; therapy would be useful if your imposter syndrome has deeper roots you want to explore. #9 – Set attainable goals. Remember, goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Sensitive. If you're having difficulty believing in your abilities, set a small goal you can attain in a short amount of time – then celebrate the win! Are you in the wrong job that chips away at you every day? The document and coaching programs offered by Exclusive Career Coaching will help you find a job that uses your zone of genius, recognizes your value, and pays you what you're worth. Imposter syndrome expert Clare Josa joins the podcast this week. The first thing to mention about Clare is how you pronounce her surname. Yosa, Not Josa. If you want a research-backed assessment of your IMPOSTER SYNDROME, then Clare has made available a personalised action plan, which will take less than 5 minutes. Go here: Here's the link for the scorecard I mentioned. I think your audience might find it really useful. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments. An example in a Board Meeting 62% of corporate employees struggle with it. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Clare-Josa-Example-of-Imposter-Syndrome-in-a-Board-Room.mp4 Kevin said he can back up Clare's research. In his work with GrowCFO, they suffer from a lack of confidence and I.S. Clare says there are trigger points. Like being promoted into a C-Suite position. Either people cope or they step back. This syndrome has gotten worse due to social media (add it to the long list...) Social Media Impact http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Clare-Josa-Social-Media-Impact.mp4 The problem with social media is what you see is the best bits of the best bits of everyone else! Clare mentioned bridging the gap strategies. Compensating for IS really. THAT doesn't work. Examples, I'm going to toughen up, Push on through, Pretend it's okay, I'm going to put on a persona. That can work short-term but at a huge personal cost. In this clip, Clare explains what you should do. Start by PRESSING PAUSE. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Clare-Josa-How-to-Address-Imposter-Syndrome.mp4 A big trigger point is going from managing to leading. Now it's about strategy and being visible. You set the direction, rather than collaborating with others. This is a big identity and skillset shift. Most people don't get trained. Clare teaches by working on the body. It's not talking therapy. The last thing you want is the go through all the bad stuff that got them to their place of strife. Connect with what happens to the body before they set sabotage. Clare Josa has been a leadership mentor since 2003. She's the author of eight books, including Dare To Dream Bigger and Ditching Imposter Syndrome. As well as helping small business owners to overcome imposter syndrome, Clare does a lot of training in large corporates, and helps them to achieve things like better team performance and closing the gender pay gap. In this episode, Clare shares the legal challenges she's faced in her business, including corporations using her lead magnets within their training programmes without paying for rights to license them. Suzanne addresses the issue of “Scope Creep”, how it's impacting Clare's business in a negative way, and what Clare can do about it. Suzanne also shares her thoughts on how to get a corporate client to stop delaying on signing your contract. Thanks in part to Suzanne and her Legal Academy, Clare has all her legal issues covered. But even so, the show wouldn't be complete without the terrifying hypothetical: What would be the utmost worst that could happen to Clare in her business surrounding defamation and copyright infringement? In This Episode: [2:12] Clare shares a major problem she's had with corporates using her lead magnets as part of their in-house training programs without having the rights to use them. [4:36] Suzanne and Clare talk about the clarity of her terms, and which steps Clare can potentially take to rectify the issue of ‘scope creep'. [8:11] Clare explains what other “scope creep” she has experienced and addresses the challenges of unauthorized recording of her keynotes. [13:10] How do you get a corporate client to actually sign your contract? [17:20] What's the worst that can happen to Clare surrounding her reputation and defamation? I open the show by reviewing Emotional First Aid by Guy Winch PH.D. in the introduction. Guy Winch makes the point that whilst almost all of us have at least a basic idea of how to treat physical wounds or injuries, whether minor household mishaps or even more serious ones, such as if we witness an accident and step in to help, when it comes to emotional wounds, many of us don't even know where to begin and are left floundering and miserable – and we can even make things worse if we're not careful.Examining seven types of emotional wound – rejection, loneliness, loss & trauma, guilt, rumination, failure and low self-esteem – Winch provides a step-by-step guide as to how we should apply both immediate and longer-term treatment to salve these psychological injuries, and is careful to point out how to spot whether a problem is so serious that the 'patient' is better off seeking professional help, rather than attempting to solve the problem themselves. This, of course, also applies to friends, colleagues and loved ones who may be well-intentioned in wanting to help, but may not be the best person to apply the treatments. In order to show how the book works, I take an in-depth look at the section on rejection, because it is both the most common form of emotional wound, inflicts the most pain on the patient (and that pain has been proven to be real, visceral pain) and also something that impacted me personally during my own breakdown. In the main part of the show, I interview Clare Josa whose latest book Ditching Imposter Syndrome is the culmination of her journey through a varied career that has included engineering, market research, yoga and meditation amongst other things. A remarkable woman who earned FIrst Class degree in Engineering after writing her dissertation in German (!), Clare became one of the first people in Europe to qualify in Six Sigma quality control, and went on to become Head of Market Research at Dyson. It was during her time as an engineer, however, that Clare experienced her own serious bout of imposter syndrome, and overcoming this psychological barrier has latterly become her life's work. The author of eight books ranging from novels, through meditation and mindfulness guides to volumes about personal and business success, Clare is a sought-after public speaker, an NLP Trainer and led the EU VAT campaign that managed to break all the rules and actually overturn legislation imposed by the European Union in 2015-16 (which is when Clare and I first met). Clare brings real science to everything she does, debunking myths and making the mysterious simple. Her unique approach manages to combine factors such as ancient wisdom and the latest neuroscience, creativity and 'getting out of your own way', so you're in for an exciting ride covering many of the bases that Inside Your Head was created to examine!Clare is very much someone who 'walks the walk' in her own life, and is a charismatic and enthusiastic guest – I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to her.As usual, the show ends with another "Relaxation on the Beach" meditation and this time, I introduce the technique of finding calm by 'noting' your thoughts and letting them go, rather than becoming embroiled in them. The show opens with me revealing some of my own, recent 'lived experience' dealing with imposter syndrome, an incident that took me completely by surprise. I discuss how it manifested itself, the implications it has for my own psychological 'work' because it has revealed an aspect of my personality that I had overlooked, and how I have managed to deal with it. This also has implications for my discussions with forthcoming guest Clare Josa, who specialises in helping people overcome imposter syndrome. The main interview is with Dan Holloway, an extraordinary man who, despite being bipolar, was Creative Thinking World Champion in 2016, 2017 and 2019, World Intelligence Champion in 2000, and European Speed Reading Champion in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He now runs a company called Rogue Interrobang which focuses on teaching people how to be creative, and this forms the main focus of our discussion today. We look at how the term 'creativity' can be interpreted in different ways, ranging from what people often mis-name "talent" (in fact, frequently the result of thousands of hours of practice rather than a 'gift from God') to simply having new ideas about all manner of things, whether in traditional creative fields or business or politics.Dan also talks passionately about something he is intimately familiar with: the way that suffering mental health problems can stigmatise you in the workplace, and that many businesses and organisations that praise themselves for their inclusivity in fact are nothing of the kind, creating barriers for disabled individuals that are impossible to cross.Working in the self-publishing world, Dan also has strong opinions about the role of 'gatekeepers' and how frequently they are encountered, not just in the world of publishing, but elsewhere too.The show ends with another "Relaxation on the Beach" meditation, this time using a 'body scan' to relax your body and ease any discomfort or tension. This is a great way to focus on the present, moving through the body and noting sensations, whilst clearing your mind of any other distractions and using the breath as your 'home base'. Join me for this brilliant and action-packed episode with Clare Josa, an expert on and author of, “Ditching Imposter Syndrome.” We talk about the definition of imposter syndrome and why so many of us, especially high performers, suffer from it, why it's helpful to distinguish between imposter syndrome and self doubt, and why we need to shift from judging to evaluating. Clare also offers some great tips on how we as leaders can support employees with imposter syndrome and how we as individuals can start to gain back our personal power. And as Clare passionately rallies at the end of our conversation: “Do something. Please, I implore you! Take one action in the next 24 hours to move you towards setting yourself free from imposter syndrome.” You can do something about imposter syndrome, and thankfully Clare shows us the way.I loved this conversation, Clare, and your book! Thank you for doing this work and helping us all find a path to being the powerful leaders we can all be.Thanks for Listening! If you liked this episode, please rate, review, and share the episode. Hi and welcome to another episode of the Creative Introvert Entrepreneur Podcast, which is hosted by Kim Beasley, an Introvert Entrepreneur Coach. The focus of this show is to help introverts build their business brand online. A favorite quote of this show is Introverts Unite. Inspiring you with this quote so it can encourage you to be successful at building your business brand online. For this podcast episode, Fifi Mason shares tips that will help you to market your business online so you can connect with your target buyers. About FifiFifi Mason inspires introvert entrepreneurs to build a personal brand business that's in flow with their energy and personality. As host of The Quietly Successful Summit 2020, she helped over 700 introvert entrepreneurs alongside introverted industry experts such as Mark Schaefer, Matthew Pollard and Clare Josa. But there was a time when just the thought of hosting a summit or posting about herself on social media was terrifying. When she started as a freelance Brand and Web Designer, she knew the benefits of building a personal brand and putting herself out there. But after trying all the conventional 'out-there' marketing tactics to be seen and heard, she still struggled to do it consistently. The problem? She was scared to be herself, and it showed. Fifi hadn't figured out her values, discovered her purpose, or found her voice. So she set out to learn everything she could to build her personal brand and attract clients in a way that is authentic to her, an introvert. Everything she learned she put into practice, and she now feels more focused, prepared and less afraid to show up. And her mission has become inspiring to other introvert business owners to find their own way. Final ThoughtsThanks for listening in as Fifi shared her knowledge about marketing your business online during this podcast, the Creative Introvert Entrepreneur Podcast. Here's the Transcript:Clare Josa Thank you for being with us. Thank you, Stephanie. It's lovely to spend time with you today. Claire, I know that you have done so much as a coach and you've come so far. You've got your book, you've got your certification program. You do amazing speaking ex now also virtually, and you also have your one-to-one and other programs. So, you know, I'm sure all the coaches and consultants listening are thinking, wow, how did she manage to do all this, but really love to hear more about your journey. Of course. Well, I started off as an engineer, as you do my training, I've got a master's degree in mechanical engineering and German, and I spent 10 years in engineering and specialised in six Sigma and lean manufacturing. After about 10 years, I realized actually I wanted to change a scene. There was a lot of me too in engineering back then being one of just two female engineers on a staff of 200 was quite challenging.Clare Josa And I would say realized I wanted to spend more time with people because making people smile was really what floated my boat rather than working with machines. So I went and I became, I went travelling for a year and then came back and I got the job as head of market research at Dyson. So I set up their market research functionality. I'd been running what we called guerilla market research in my engineering job. Because just being able to get engineers to talk directly to customers that gives you so much better feedback than when it's been through a marketing teams' filter because they're all speaking different languages. So at Dyson, my job was to be the interpreter between the design engineers, the marketing team and the end customers. And I loved that. That's when I qualified as an NLP trainer. So neuro-linguistic programming. After a few years, I realized I could never make a big enough difference in the world by selling somebody else's bits of plastic.Clare Josa So I took the leap back in 2003 and set up my own business in leadership development. The reason I got into imposter syndrome, which is what I've spent...
Whilst reading a book on imposter syndrome (Ditching Imposter Syndrome by Clare Josa), there have been moments of stark recognition - of myself and the clients I work with. There's some way to go on learning but, in this episode, I pose the question of whether menopausal anxiety is amplified because it gives no place for imposter syndrome to hide and it relates deeply to identity. Michelle explores Ditching Imposter Syndrome: How To Finally Feel Good Enough And Become The Leader You Were Born To Be by Clare Josa. She explores self-limiting beliefs, the "internal editor", gratitude, and more. From the back cover: "Leading is hard enough without lying awake at 3 a.m. worrying that ‘they’ might find out you’re not good enough. Or that you don’t know as much as you should. Or that they might suss you’re a fraud, you don’t belong and got to where you are by accident or luck. There’s a name for this: Imposter Syndrome - and it’s time to ditch it! In this ground-breaking book, Clare Josa guides you through the revolutionary five-step strategy she has created over the past fifteen years of mentoring women in leadership roles, so that you can set yourself free from Imposter Syndrome, for good. In Ditching Imposter Syndrome you’ll discover why mindset-based, cognitive approaches haven’t worked for you in the past and exactly how Imposter Syndrome affects your performance and causes so much stress - and worse. Clare's inspirational, practical exercises bring you the best from the worlds of practical psychology, NLP, Leadership Development, the neuroscience of performance, and demystified ancient wisdom. This is blended into simple steps that mean you can spot and release Imposter Syndrome's deeply subconscious drivers, in a way that’s fast, fun and forever. If you’re hungry to move from the fear of being found out as a ‘fraud leader’ to becoming the ‘thought leader’ the world needs you to be, the practical strategies in Ditching Imposter Syndrome will help you to create breakthroughs in minutes, not months."

What is imposter syndrome? If you find yourself worrying that your clients might find you out and realize that you’re probably not as good as they think you are, you’re probably manifesting symptoms of this surprisingly common condition. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Did you know that 82% of those running their own business go through this?
I don't know about you, but I've certainly second guessed and doubted myself...and many times have wondered whether I'm good enough... and I'm sure that all of this has got in the way of me achieving goals in the past, or at the very least slowed me down. In speaking, whether that's on stage, in a webinar, video or on a podcast, imposter syndrome rears its head often and that's why a big part of my work with students and on here is helping you manage and master your mindset. That's why I invited Clare Josa onto the show this week and I know you're going to love it. Clare is the UK's leading authority on Imposter Syndrome, having spent the past fifteen years working with business leaders to help them to overcome it, as well as leading the landmark 2019 Imposter Syndrome Research Study and publishing her new book: Ditching Imposter Syndrome. An expert in the neuroscience and psychology of performance, her original training as an engineer, specialising in Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing, means her approach is grounded in practical common sense, creating breakthroughs not burnout. She is the author of eight books and has been interviewed by the likes of The Independent, The Daily Telegraph and Radio 4, amongst others. Clare speaks internationally on how to change the world by changing yourself. Enjoy! What we talk about: How Clare uses speaking to shift perspective. Why you need to be intentional but not attached to the outcome of your talk. What made Clare write her first of eight books. The barriers to meditating and how to overcome them. The impact of not aligning your ‘whole self' with your goals What Clare discovered about herself during meditation. How Clare ended up becoming an expert in imposter syndrome. The amazing results from the first UK research study into imposter syndrome. The differences in how men and women handle imposter syndrome. How we sabotage our success as entrepreneurs and speakers because of imposter syndrome. Why we find it so hard to celebrate the success of others. How we can turn ‘comparisonitis' into a positive thing for our growth. The myths around imposter syndrome. The ‘ABC' emergency first aid technique for tackling imposter syndrome generated fear. The 5-step process for ditching imposter syndrome The results Clare has got by setting an intention an aligning behind it. How Clare uses stories and humour in her talks. Why you should always have a contract and have spoken to a client yourself. How Clare's business took off when she narrowed her focus. In this episode, I talk to Claire Josa, who is the author of Dare To Dream Bigger, and an expert on overcoming limiting beliefs. The irony is that she actually tells quite often the story about her own failures in feeling like an imposter within the book. Actually, I think a lot of the things that it discusses are quite profound in terms of the whole mental side of writing and doing other things. I think this actually a very interesting interview for psychological perspective. You might be one of those happy individuals who never suffers from writer's block, never feels like an imposter, and is happily getting on with their life. In which case, you might not find this interview that interesting. You can find show notes at http://beginselfpublishing.com/imposter-syndrome-clare-josa

Did you know that the energy of your words - each and every word you speak - each thought you think - has a measurable energy? Yet most of us think without thinking. Most of us have forgotten how to breathe. When we get stressed or overwhelmed our breathing moves to the upper chest area and we trigger off the body's 'fight or flight' mechanisms. This stops you thinking clearly, floods your system with cortisol and adrenalin, and leads to physical, mental and emotional health issues. In episode 2 of 52 Mindful Moments you'll discover how to press 'pause' on this - and use a simple mindful breathing technique to let go of that stress and increase your oxygen levels - your brain's food - essential for making great decisions and feeling happier.
