What makes Mike Leigh's films so good and so uniquely Mike Leigh Films is inextricable from the process he uses to make them. But there are quite a few common myths and misconceptions about his process, including that his films are improvised and, confusingly, that his films are rehearsed. In this episode, Alex debunks these myths using research for her 2018 book Peterloo in Process: A Mike Leigh Collaboration. The book dives deeper into Leigh's process through interviews with him and his collaborators on the film, both behind and in front of the camera.  You can purchase a copy of Peterloo in Process at http://mikeleighbook.com Related Episodes TIFF 2024 #4: British social realism: Mike Leigh's Hard Truths and Andrea Arnold's Bird Ep. 119 Mike Leigh's Naked Ep. 32 Sorry We Missed You and Peterloo Ep. 11 Mike Leigh's Peterloo ------- Stay updated on Seventh Row Follow Seventh Row on Twitter, Bluesky and Instagram. Read our articles at seventh-row.com. Do you like fruit? Of course not but we tell our children we do because we want them to believe the ridiculous lie that fruit is real food, and that is what's important. I have an apple pretty much every day, that's how sound I am. We discuss the use of fruit in films and given their myriad of uses - mainly for smashing into during car chases or f****g - there is a lot to choose from.  Legendary British comic book writer Warren Ellis co-created a three issue DC Comics series called RED that inspired the 2010 action-comedy which is the subject of this week's review. Whilst Bruce Willis might be on familiar ground as former black-ops agent Frank Moses, director Robert Schwentke assembles an unlikely cast to support him which includes Morgan Freeman as his CIA mentor, John Malkovich as a victim of illegal experimentation, subjected to daily doses of LSD for years, Helen Mirren as a retired MI6 assassin and Brian Cox as an ex-KGB officer who is still in love with her. This one really runs the gamut from average to mediocre, though anyone who can't enjoy Dame Helen wielding an enormous belt-fed machine gun or Brian Cox hamming it up more than Miss Piggy's bacon sandwich is dead inside. GREEN EGGS AND HAM was the result of a bet between medical professional impersonator Dr Seuss and his publicist that he couldn't write a novel using only 50 words and the fact that the prestige-fraud claiming quack successfully produced one of the best-selling kids' books of all time conclusively proves that children are idiots. This 23-episode Netflix adaptation features striking visuals and a strong cast including Michael Douglas, Adam Devine, Keegan-Michael Key and Eddie Izzard but that doesn't stop us from asking the important questions like just why is the titular food green and what might the devious Sam-I-Am be hiding? Watch out for an explosive finale to the review where two of the guys say they will watch more of this, and the other dad beats them to death for their lies and insolence. We love to hear from our listeners! Gresham Blake is a design led tailoring business and ready to wear clothing brand, creating bespoke, made to measure & limited edition luxury clothing, shoes & accessories for both men and women. With stores situated in the heart of Shoreditch, London and Brighton's famous North Laine. History of Gresham Blake Gresham and his wife, Fal, launched the Gresham Blake brand in Brighton at the height of ‘cool Britannia' in 2000. Since then, Gresham's eye-catching creations for high profile clients including Ray Winstone, Steve Coogan, Jimmy Page, Plan B and Norman Cook (aka FatBoy Slim) have brought him fashion industry recognition and an ever-growing army of customers attracted by his signature combination of quality garments with a quirky twist. Gresham grew up in Royal Tunbridge Wells, inheriting his needlework skills from his mother, a talented seamstress & art teacher. His mum's influence on his career direction was evident early – by the age of four Gresham was already using his tailoring & design skills to create apparel & matching accessories for his Action Man Collection. After briefly considering a career as a sculptor, he went on to study Fashion at Brighton University, following in the footsteps of former alumni, Barbara Hulaniki. Gresham champions individualism, creativity and boldness when it comes to suits. This is particularly excellent when it comes to people wanting to feel their most authentic self in any environment, helping to overcome Imposter Syndrome.  *imposter syndrome is a psychological term referring to a pattern of behaviour where people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud* Thank you to Gresham Blake tailors for taking the time out to do the interview - Who knew that self-doubt could be partially linked to your attire? Why did Bobby Kennedy leave such a lasting impression on US politics and society? Revered equally across the political spectrum today, his rise to prominence was controversial. He became Attorney General at just 35 and gained a reputation as a tough operator during his brother JFK's time in the White House. But when he was gunned down in 1968, America was riven by racial and class division as well as doubts over the country's involvement in the Vietnam War. Senator Robert Kennedy came to embody the hopes and dreams of a generation seeking a fairer and more peaceful country. Fifty years after becoming the target of an assassin in the Ambassador's Hotel in Los Angeles, Stephen Sackur speaks to some of the people whose lives were changed forever that day. Close aide Paul Schrade, who was himself hit in the skull by one of the assassin's bullets and Vincent Di Pierro who found himself covered in the senator's blood as he slumped to the ground give the closest accounts of RFK's final moments. Others painting a picture of Kennedy, the man include Peter Edleman, the policy director for his presidential campaign and speechwriters Adam Walinsky and Jeff Greenfield. Meanwhile RFK's daughter Kerry Kennedy who was eight when her father died, gives us a rare insight into their home life and his role as a husband and father Legendary British interviewer David Frost (famed for his interrogation of Richard Nixon after Watergate) talks about the impact RFK had on him. And contributors speculate if another Kennedy may soon run for the White House with all eyes on RFK's charismatic grandson, congressman Joe Kennedy who represents Massachusetts.

Legendary British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes tells Jaime and Amy how her early early textile designs were considered too extreme for the traditional purveyors, so she had to take manufacturing into her own hands. As a fashion designer, she pioneered the use of printed textiles as an intrinsic part of the garment’s composition. Now 50 years into her career, she attributes her extraordinary work ethic to her mother. Oh, and she has been known to frolic in the sea alongside Burt Bacharach. Images and more from our guest!
