Tony Nominations. Life Changes. Taking Comedy Seriously. Leslie Kritzer has been around for a second – two decades to be specific – and finally she has received a Tony Nomination for her brilliant turn as The Lady of the Lake in the 2024 revival of Spamalot. This episode is full of laughs as we talk about taking comedy seriously and full of tears as we talk about personal loss while performing one of the funniest shows in the musical theatre cannon. “I did not get here alone,” says Kritzer on this emotional episode. Let's dive in and celebrate this comedic genius who gives us her all, not just eight times a week, but even after the show closes. Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer recently finished her run on Broadway as The Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, for which she received a Tony Nomination. Other Broadway credits include Delia in Beetlejuice where she received Drama Desk and Drama League nominations, Something Rotten!, Elf, Sondheim on Sondheim, Legally Blonde, A Catered Affair (Drama Desk nomination), and Hairspray. Off-Broadway: The Robber Bridegroom (Lucille Lortel Award and Drama League awards), Gigantic (Lucille Lortel nomination), ROOMS: A Rock Romance (Outer Critics Circle nomination), The Great American Trailer Park Musical (Drama Desk nomination). Television credits include recurring roles in The First Lady, Bridge and Tunnel, New Amsterdam, Vinyl, and the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, portraying the iconic Carol Burnett. Other television appearances include Difficult People, Slugfest, Kevin Can Wait, Younger, and Law and Order: SVU. Kritzer has created several solo shows, including Burn it to the Ground, Beautiful Disaster, and Leslie Kritzer Is Patti LuPone at Les Mouches, for which she received a TimeOut NY award. Today, we begin our long awaited exploration of the musicals of the great Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) who died recently at the age of 91. We're starting with one of Sondheim's early collaborations: the 1957 classic West Side Story, which saw Sondheim working as lyricist alongside composer Leonard Bernstein. We talk about: - The death of Sondheim and his emerging status as a guru/wisdom teacher in the “church” of musical theatre – a reputation famously sent-up by the song “God” - The origins of West Side Story (1957) in the racial & religious tensions between Jewish & Catholic immigrants in New York City's East Side at the turn of the 20th century, and how race in America had shifted by the 50s - "Something's Coming," "The Jet Song," and the two dueling religious systems in West Side Story: group belonging vs. love, and the desire for a conversion experience - The show's classic love songs—"Tonight," "Maria," and "Somewhere"—with their theological ideas about the full embodiment of sexual desire, and the power (and lure) of forbidden love - West Side Story's social agenda, explored in "Gee, Officer Krupke" and "America," and the tension between whether we hold society or individuals responsible for violence - Whether the show ends in tragedy or hope – the challenge of redemptive violence and the promise of Maria as the priest of her community You'll hear: - The company of the 2010 revue Sondheim on Sondheim (including the great Barbara Cook, Vanessa L. Williams, Leslie Kritzer, Erin Mackey, Tom Wopat, Norm Lewis, Euan Morton, and Matthew Scott), singing the song “God” - Isaac Cole Powell singing "Something's Coming" (available to watch here) - Larry Kert & Carol Lawrence singing "Tonight," "Somewhere" and "I Feel Pretty" from the original 1957 Broadway Cast Recording. - Max Goberman, Eddie Roll, Grover Dale and the company of the original Broadway cast singing "Gee, Officer Krupke" - Carol Lawrence, Carmen Gutierrez, Marilyn Cooper and Elizabeth Taylor singing "I Feel Pretty" from the Original Broadway Cast recording. Beetlejuice star Leslie Kritzer has done a few shows... Something Rotten, Elf, Sondheim on Sondheim, A Catered Affair, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, BUT MOST importantly... She is a student of the Dan Tracy school of video production. Leslie just wants Dan to like her more than he likes other people. Call Dan for all your video needs. Leslie Kritzer sure did! We're so stoked that Broadway's most hilarious leading lady is with us this week. We catch up with Leslie from her attic/ closet voice over studio in New Jersey where she has been holed up for the past year. We get to chat about her love for Alex Timbers, and her comedic roots, but also her early days in high school when she almost ended up outside the 7/11. Joe and Leslie commiserate about "being one bad decision away from being a f*** up" and how a great teacher can really change your life. Leslie is as hilarious as she is insightful. This is a very special episode of the podcast because not only do we have the hilarious and amazing Leslie Kritzer on the podcast, but we also recorded this the night before the election which makes for some funny conversation! Leslie Kritzer is an incredible actress who you may know from Broadway shows like Beetlejuice, or Legally Blonde, but guess what? She was also once a temp. And we love that. Right across the street from where Anna worked at her survival job! And they bond over the area of 59th and Lex. Leslie and Anna also discuss what it was like to shut down Beetlejuice at the beginning of the pandemic, roles she got right out of college, and her time in restaurants. Anna and Ellen also discuss the famous story about how Anna lost her day job on Election Day 2016, which birthed the Unemployed brand. It's a special episode, and don't tell us who won the presidency because according to this ep? We don't know yet! This self-proclaimed Jew-rican is tearing it up 8 times a week in Beetlejuice on Broadway, consistently proving herself as one of the funniest people on Broadway. Leslie made her Broadway debut in Hairspray in 2004, followed by a string of amazing Broadway roles in Legally Blonde, A Catered Affair, Elf, and Something Rotten. After deciding she loved performing at a young age, she found herself playing piano at Carnegie Hall at age 9. She originally felt she would seek classical voice training before deciding musical theatre was the way to go, but not before a slight problem with stealing led her to find her tribe. Her story is one of astonishment, as it includes an amazing instance of "theatre saved my life." Interview content begins at 2:54. Closing standards begin at 49:25. Theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom with her weekly review of a theatrical production in the region. What's on her agenda today? Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! National Theatre in Washington, DC, has staged the pre-Broadway world premiere of Beetlejuice, a new musical adaptation of filmmaker Tim Burton's 1988 cult classic. The new musical -- with music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect and Book by Scott Brown and Anthony King -- takes a new tack on the movie plot: it tells the story of Lydia Deetz (played by Sophia Ann Caruso), an unusual teenager obsessed with the whole “'being dead' thing.” Luckily for Lydia, her family's new home is haunted by a recently deceased couple (played by Kerry Butler and Rob McClure) and a degenerate demon-for-hire named Beetlejuice (played by Tony Award nominee Alex Brightman). When Lydia calls on the twisted ghost to scare away her insufferable parents (played by Adam Dannheiser and Leslie Kritzer), Beetlejuice comes up with the perfect plan, involving an exorcism, arranged marriages and one very frightened Girl Scout.Beetlejuice, directed by Alex Timbers, continues at National Theatre in Washington, DC, through Sunday November 18.
