Actor, writer and director Max Azulay leveraged his obsession with filmmaking to create unique, irreverent films armed with his comedic sensibility. The influence of the legendary Mel Brooks seeped in early on in his Suburban upbringing, which happened to take place 40 minutes from New York City, and helped inspire his young creativity. Finding his community of like-minded comedic cinephiles led to several short films which channelled his interests. He moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College, after transferring from Sarah Lawrence, his parents' alma mater, and made a number of short films which led to 5 Doctors, his first feature film. Robert Altman would be proud of the film's tone, which captured fundamental aspects of Max's own life, including his high school, a thematic undertone of anxiety, and members of his family. He co-directed the film with frequent collaborator, Matt Porter. In addition to starring in the film, the pair wrote the screenplay alongside Phil Primason for an ensemble cast, including Bobby Moynihan, Jeremy Shamos, Peter Friedman and Eddie Pepitone among several others. In addition, Max has directed and written several short films with his collaborators, including Xander; Lenny; One Mutual Friend; and Carmen & Moony, the latter starring his partner Kate Adams, with whom he is developing his next feature. In our conversation, we discussed growing up near the big city; the influence of Borscht Belt comedy; the path towards his first feature; kleptomania; WiFi; and the through-line of family which runs through his catalogue.Opening Credits: John Lopker - Embryo Murder I CC BY 4.0 DEED; Caleb Lemon - A Road in the Country I CC BY-NC 4.0 DEED; Jangwa - Jupiter Czar I CC BY 4.0 DEED; Closing Credits: Piki - Clear Blue I CC BY 4.0 DEED.

For this month's second throwback podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte and Dan Bayer to discuss Todd Haynes' first collaboration with Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore, "Safe" (1995), also starring Peter Friedman, Xander Berkeley, Susan Norman, Kate McGregor-Stewart & James LeGros. Steeped in ambiguity with many interpretations, the film has inspired a tremendous amount of discussion over the years and has endured as one of the best films of the '90s despite its modest release, which saw it gain very little awards recognition or box office success. What do we think of it nearly thirty years later as we get ready for Haynes' latest film with Moore, "May December?" Fiction writer and editor A.A. de Levine joins to discuss Mary Harron's debut feature, 'I Shot Andy Warhol', featuring a seismic performace from Lili Taylor as the infamous feminist writer Valerie Solanas as well as Jared Harris as the late pop artist, and a moving turn from Stephen Dorff as trans icon Candy Darling. The film is a fascinating, frightening view into the life and experiences of Solanas that led her to an increased state of anger, paranoia, and aggression which eventually resulted in the film's titular act of violence. We take a look at the real life Solanas and her most enduring work, The SCUM Manifesto; its aims, its limitations, and its intentions as a furious feminist screed, a work of biting satire, or something in the middle. Then, we discuss the film's portrayal of New York's art scene in the 1960s and its nuanced examination of the ways Warhol and his Factory cohort offer a contradiction of the avant-garde as filtered through highly palatable standards of beauty and taste. Finally, we talk about the career of Mary Harron, who would go on to achieve her greatest acclaim with her sophomore feature, the teriffic 'American Psycho', before having her films relegated to a place of relative obscurity for the next two decades. Nearly 300 U.S. agriculture and forest products companies and associations delivered a letter to Secretary of DOT Pete Buttigieg last week, calling for the immediate intervention to protect U.S. exporters and their access to foreign markets. Adam and Jeannie interview Alison Herzog, head of global social business strategy at Dell, about "deep listening" on a large scale. The art of “deep listening” in social business One of the most important elements to designing experiences is listening to customers. That sounds simple enough, but it’s easy to assume we understand what they’re trying to tell us when we really don’t! “Are we listening to really understand our customers, or are we listening to react…?” - Alison Herzog Our customers’ true intentions and the emotions behind them can be grossly misunderstood by humans and machines alike. So what happens when customers engage on so many channels that we need algorithms to sort it all out for us? To engage in meaningful ways, a socially active business needs more that the right software, qualified staff or a willingness to listen. Today’s guest, Alison Herzog, knows what it takes to connect all these things to a culture of “deep listening.” “If we don’t care about the person we are serving, then we don’t understand what our purpose or our mission is.” -Alison Herzog Alison gives us great insight and real-life examples of how Dell balances technology, data, and real-life human interaction to bring listening to a higher level. With more than 145,000 employees, Dell serves customers in a vast range of B2B and B2C products and services. But they've achieved a culture where deep and empathetic listening are not just practiced, but a part of the DNA. You can "hear the smile in [Alison's] voice," as Jeannie puts it, while she shares Dell's amazing approach. If a company as large as Dell can win at social intelligence, you can too! Interview highlights What's it like leading the global social business strategy for a large company like Dell? [1:45] Alison explains how she puts her ethos of “doing right by customers” into day-to-day operations. [3:50] How do the capabilities and restrictions that come with multi-channel engagement affect the ability to listen deeply to customers? [8:20] Alison explains how Dell listens in ways that help them better understand customers who straddle multiple segments, products, services and channels. [12:05] How does a company as diverse and far-reaching as Dell embed a universal ethic around social intelligence into their culture? [16:30]   About our guest Alison Herzog heads global social business strategy at Dell. As part of her role, she recently led integration of all social business strategy and operations in the largest tech acquisition in history. Alison has been featured as one of 50 influential women in digital marketing twice by TopRank, featured by the American Marketing Association, LinkedIn, and most recently celebrated as one of 7 women shaping digital marketing by IBM. Let Me Ascertain You: The Civilians Podcast

Here’s episode three in our new podcast series Let Me Ascertain You: Be The Death of Me. What you’ll hear are excerpts from a larger ongoing project about life, death, and whatever happens after that. As part of this investigation, our team spoke to those who work every day in matters of life and death — people who spend their days in the places that witness the demise of our bodies. We’ve put three of those stories together for this episode. To kick things off, here’s actor Peter Friedman performing a man named Leonard: he’s a doctor of internal medicine. Then Danielle Davenport performs an interview we did with Sara, a child life specialist in the general pediatric unit at NYU Hospital. Keith Randolph Smith closes out this episode with his performance of Rocky, who is the co-founder of The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which it turns out is the nation’s first minority-run volunteer ambulance corps. Since 1988 the Bed-Stuy ambulance corps greatly improved emergency care in the Bed-Stuy community and to this day it continues to train young people and adults in life-saving skills. The interviews for this podcast were conducted by Micharne Cloughley, Dan Domingues and Meridith Friedman.
