Peninsula Clean EnergyPeninsula Clean Energy is a community choice aggregation (CCA) founded in 2016 that serves about 310,000 customers in San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos. Peninsula Clean Energy has focused on increasing renewables since beginning service, setting higher targets for renewable energy procurement than those mandated by California under the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). By 2025, Peninsula Clean Energy is aiming to achieve 99 percent renewable electricity on an hourly basis.Back up… What are community choice aggregators?Originally created to offer small residential electricity consumers a competitive alternative to large utilities during restructuring, CCAs' presence on California's grid has grown dramatically over the past decade and they now serve over 11 million Californians. Consumers served by CCAs continue to receive distribution and transmission services from the resident private utility - like PG&E - while the CCA chooses and purchases the electricity itself. Climate Break has covered CCAs before. For more on how these local entities are trying to decarbonize their energy supplies, see our story on Central Coast Community Energy. How is this different from what California's requiring anyway?Under SB100, 50 percent of the electricity procured by load serving entities (LSEs) like Peninsula Clean Energy is supposed to be from resources that are eligible under California's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). That means at least half of LSEs' electricity must be met by renewable resources like wind and solar, and less than half from resources like natural gas and large hydroelectric power. By 2045, SB100 requires that LSEs achieve all 100 percent carbon-free electricity sales. These targets are based on annual rather than real-time accounting. For example, LSEs like Peninsula Clean Energy can achieve RPS benchmarks by meeting all of their customers' electricity demand with solar for half of the day, but relying on non-renewable resources like natural gas to meet high demand during evening hours. Similarly, many electricity providers in California are now offering 100 percent renewable energy plans. Customers can choose to opt into these plans, typically in exchange for a higher rate. These energy plans are 100 percent renewable on an annual basis, but may not be 100 percent renewable on a monthly, daily, or hourly basis. During high demand periods with low renewable supply, like hot summer evenings, most 100 percent renewable energy plans are still benefiting from non-renewable energy, but they make up for it by contributing extra renewable energy to the grid during other times. Peninsula Clean Energy's goal—getting to all renewable energy on hourly basis—is much harder than getting to 100 percent renewable energy on an annual basis because their renewable supply will need to line up in real time with customers' demand.Advantages of Hourly MatchingBy itself, annual matching requirements probably won't be enough to decarbonize the grid. Hourly matching sends a stronger signal to invest in resources like long duration energy storage and geothermal, which can be available during hours when solar isn't. By reducing demand for carbon-polluting resources like natural gas for all hours of the day, hourly matching can also help to reduce emissions by more than annual matching would.Okay, but what are the drawbacks?Switching from annual to hourly matching increases procurement costs. By how much depends on context, like the kinds of generating resources already available and when during the day ratepayers demand electricity. In their modeling, Peninsula Clean Energy found that costs increased exponentially as they approached 100 percent renewable procurement on an hourly level. While they believe they can meet all of their demand with renewables 99 percent of the time, meeting demand during that last one percent of the time became cost prohibitive. Hourly matching may require more information than is currently accessible. Currently, LSEs use renewable energy credits (RECs) to show their compliance with California's RPS standards. RECs may either be bundled -- sold still attached to the wholesale electricity itself -- or unbundled. Unbundled RECs are purchased separately from the renewable electricity they came from, and the amount of unbundled RECs that LSEs are allowed to use to meet RPS requirements is declining over time. According to the EPA, most RECs aren't tracked with enough detail to work in an hourly-matching system. In the long term, decarbonizing the grid will require hourly matching, but achieving it may still be infeasible for many individual electricity providers while keeping rates reasonable and reliability high.Peninsula Clean Energy's plan for getting to 24/7 renewablePeninsula Clean Energy created an open source modeling tool they're calling MATCH, which they've used to develop their strategy for hourly matching. MATCH chooses resources to minimize costs while maximizing renewable supply on an hourly basis. Peninsula Clean Energy is hopeful that by using this tool they'll be able to match renewable supply to demand the vast majority of the time and reduce emissions grid wide while keeping ratepayers' costs about the same. The MATCH model is publicly available and can be used by other entities interested in hourly matching.Peninsula Clean Energy's CEO Jan Pepper told Climate Break that they're procuring a variety of resources in order to meet their 2025 goal; with a big focus on battery storage options, wind, and geothermal. To ensure reliability, the CCA plans to procure more electricity capacity than they need, then sell excess generation back into California's wholesale electricity markets. Pepper also said that Peninsula Clean Energy was looking forward to technologies that aren't available yet but will be eventually, like offshore wind.About the guestJan Pepper serves as Peninsula Clean Energy's CEO. During California's prolonged, wet winter, beekeeper Gene Brandi said he had to spend twice as much money on a sugary syrup to feed his honeybees and keep them alive. That's because the bees sent to pollinate blooming almond orchards took longer than usual to emerge from their hives due to chilly temperatures, wind, and rain. Since the bees weren't out gathering nectar and pollen for nourishment, the 71-year-old beekeeper provided sustenance for them. “We probably fed twice as much as we've fed in a normal year,” said Brandi, of the Central Valley community of Los Banos. “It's expensive to feed, but it's more expensive if the hive dies.” The challenge is one of many faced by America's beekeepers following the unusually wet winter that ravaged California's farm country, which feeds much of the nation. Most commercial beekeepers send their bees to California early in the year to help pollinate its $5 billion-a-year almond crop, then move them elsewhere to pollinate commodities ranging from avocados to cherries or to the Midwest to produce honey. The state was battered this winter by at least a dozen atmospheric rivers — long plumes of moisture from the Pacific Ocean — as well as powerful storms fueled by arctic air that produced blizzard conditions in mountainous areas. The wintry weather flooded homes, triggered power outages and brought much-needed rain to drought-parched agriculture, though in some cases, more water than the crops could withstand. It also took a toll on bees, who were slow to emerge from their hives during the cold front and weeks of showers. Brandi said he'll take his hives to coastal areas this spring so the bees can forage on a native plant to make sage honey, a premium product that he can only make every few years when there's ample rain. “It is the finest honey we can make,” he said, adding that the last sage honey he has in his shop dates to 2019. “We've been praying for rain for the last three dry years, and we finally have it,” he said. “It should be a wonderful spring once it warms up for the bees.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Cynics might argue that it's impossible to operate the power grid economically with 100% renewable energy on an hourly basis, but a model developed by Peninsula Clean Energy, a community choice aggregation agency that serves San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos, California, suggests it's possible. To prove it, Peninsula Clean Energy intends to do it by 2025. “Our default product, which all of our customers receive at this time, is 50% renewable, 100% clean,” Jan Pepper, CEO of Peninsula Clean Energy, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “Our goal is to have the power that we deliver by 2025 be 100% renewable, and matched on a time-coincident, hour-by-hour basis.” Under current California regulations, renewable energy percentages are matched on an annual basis. “For example, if we have a 3,700 gigawatt-hour load, for us to be 50% renewable, which we are right now, we procure 1,850 gigawatt-hours per year of renewables and 1,850 gigawatt-hours of additional clean resources, which for us is large hydro, and that meets our needs on an annual basis,” Pepper explained. That basically means there are times when Peninsula Clean Energy is supplying more than 50% renewable power to its customers and times when it's supplying less, but over the course of the year, everything averages out so the agency hits its 50% renewable energy target. However, by 2025, the agency expects to match its supply with its load every hour of every day. “In order to do that, we'll be adding a lot of storage,” said Pepper. Peninsula Clean Energy's modeling tool, which it calls MATCH (which stands for Matching Around-The-Clock Hourly energy), was built, tested, and used over the past two years. The goal was for the agency to determine the optimal 24/7 renewable energy portfolio. Leaders wanted to know how much it would cost, the level of emission reduction benefits that could be achieved, and the impacts it might have on the broader energy system. A team of workers, which included Planning and Analytics Manager Mehdi Shahriari, Power Resources and Compliance Manager Sara Maatta, and Greg Miller from the University of California, Davis, started with an open-source model called the “Switch Power System Planning Model” and modified it significantly to create MATCH. Using the model, the team outlined in a 44-page white paper how matching customer electricity demand with renewable energy supply 99% of the time achieves the ideal balance of being cost-competitive, reducing portfolio risk, and reducing emissions. “We find that a ‘sweet spot' goal of providing 100% renewable energy on a 99% time-coincident basis results in only a 2% cost increase relative to our baseline, while achieving critical emission reductions and providing other benefits to the grid,” the team wrote in the report's executive summary. “We were pleasantly surprised,” said Pepper. However, while achieving the last 1% is doable, it's not quite as practical. “Our model also found there are diminishing returns in trying to match the last 1% of customer demand, with a 10% increase in portfolio cost needed to go from 99% time-coincident to 100% time-coincident,” the report says. “We're excited about what the future holds and being able to show that we can do this in a cost-effective way, so that we can all have a much more sustainable and clean energy future,” Pepper concluded.

Sound Agriculture: https://www.sound.ag/California Cotton & Climate Coalition: https://californiacottonandclimatecoalition.com/Bowles Farming Company: https://bfarm.com/FiberShed: https://fibershed.org/Today's episode is about the work being done by the California Cotton and Climate Coalition or C4. This is an example of a group of people that aren't interested in the hype and greenwashing that goes on in so many “sustainability” circles. They are doing the hard work of bringing the right people together, collaborating, and collecting the data to find ways to evolve the cotton industry in California. I think this is a model many other ag industries can learn from. Today you'll hear from Cannon Michael, President and CEO of Bowles Farming Company in Los Banos, California. He is the 6th generation of his family to work in the family farming business, which has farmed in California for over 160 years. After working in commercial real estate, Cannon joined the family farm in 1998, and they have since diversified from three crops to over twenty. Cannon is an advocate for California agriculture, intelligent water policy and environmental stewardship. Joining Cannon and I is Rebecca Burgess. Executive Director of Fibershed, a 501(c)3 focused on regionalizing the textile system and supporting growers to be more economically viable while rebuilding carbon stocks in the soil and providing transparency into the supply chains of textile brands. Rebecca has two decades of experience working at the intersection of ecology, fiber systems, and regional economic development. Her work as a vocationally trained weaver and self-trained natural dyer initially led her into wondering how the industrially made clothes reflected her values of transparency, connection, land stewardship, etc. Started working in wool with using sheep for regenerative grazing then was encouraged to expand into cotton as well.

A proposed route between the San Joaquin Valley and the Bay Area for California's bullet-train system received final approval Thursday from the California High Speed Rail Authority. The agency's board of directors, meeting in Sacramento, voted to certify a massive four-volume report of environmental and social impacts that the route would have on communities, farms, parks and wildlife habitats along the 89-mile stretch of the line from San Jose through Gilroy into Merced County. That vote set the stage for a second action that formally approved the preferred route, filtered out over a years-long process from among four options involving crossing the Diablo Range via Pacheco Pass west of Los Banos. “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah didn't discriminate when it came to the receiving end of his roasts during Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner. The comedian went after President Joe Biden, Democrats, Republicans and members of the media from CNN to Fox News. The headliner took the stage after the event's two-year pandemic hiatus to deliver the traditional WHCA dinner roast, quipping that it was his “great honor” to speak at the “nation's most distinguished superspreader event.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

¿Qué te provocan los baños públicos? ¿Terror? Learn more about your ad choices. This week on The California Report Magazine, we talk with Oakland-based musician Fantastic Negrito about his new song, "Rolling Through California," that explores the dissonance between the California Dream and the reality of living in the Golden State today. Plus, the story of one father and the family awaiting him in the Central Valley city of Los Banos. He followed the rules and went back to Mexico for the final step to apply for his green card: an interview at the U.S. Consulate. His wife and kids expected him back in a week or two. But it's been more than two years. Plus, 20 years ago, host Sasha Khokha wrote an article about then 17-year-old Fatima Shah, a Pakistani-American who was one of many South Asian students that experienced racist backlash after 9/11. They met again on the steps of Fatima's old high school.
In today's lesson, we are going to talk a lot about the locust that come out of the bottomless pit, in chapter 9, when the shaft is opened. At their very core, who or what are the locust? What do they represent? What does that have to do with the Church today? The Church must be alert, because the evil forces of this world attempt top mimic God. Listen to this lesson to learn some of the ways that this happens, even today. For more information about this study, or to download study materials, visit our website at: https://www.msnaz.org . In this 14th lesson from the book of Revelation, we are going to dig even further into the imagery of the Throne room from chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 5, verses 8 through 14, John continues to drive home the importance of the slain Lamb as the image that God wants his church to understand about him and his will. “John does not wish to represent Jesus as an alternative object of worship alongside God, but as one who shares in the glory due to God. He is worthy of divine worship because his worship can be included in the worship of the one God” (Richard Bauckham, 1993. 60) We will also discuss the connection between worship on earth and worship in heaven and why this matters to our creedal confession of “communion of the saints.” For more information about this study, or to download study materials, visit our website at: https://www.msnaz.org . In this 6th lesson of the book of Revelation, we are going to discuss the letter to the church in Pergamum from Chapter 2 verses 12-17. Pergamum might be considered the center of imperial worship in Rome. The temples to Zeus, Roma, and to Augustus were clear reminders of this. Christians, like Antipas, were commended for their faithfulness to God, even as to death; but the church, as a whole, was rebuked for holding to the teaching of Balaam. The church in Pergamum engaged in hypocrisy as they allowed the culture, the empire, and the imperial cult dictate how they would live as Christians. God would be faithful to his people; sadly, too often we are not faithful to him. So it happened in Pergamum. It's been called the textbook operation of World War II. It was the greatest prison rescue ever; over 2000 prisoners of war liberated and not one them or their liberators killed. Unbelievably, the liberation of Los Baños prison camp by the 511th Parachute Regiment and Hunter's Philippine Guerrillas went largely unheralded. To share the story of this amazing operation, the MacArthur Memorial hosted Jeremy Holm, author of When Angels Fall: From Toccoa to Tokyo, the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II.
In this lesson, Pastor Raul explains a bit about the necessary context for interpreting the book of Revelation. We also discuss the definition and function of apocalyptic and prophetic literature. "The point is not to predict a sequence of events. The point is to evoke and to explore the meaning of the divine judgment which is impending on the sinful world." - Richard Bauckham For more information about this study, or to download study materials, visits our website at: https://www.msnaz.org/revelation-study
