In this episode of the Cyclingnews Podcast, brought to you by Sportful, Floyds of Leadville and Pinarello, we kick off 2020 with an exclusive interview with Peter Stetina. The American rider turned away from the WorldTour at the end of the 2019 campaign, and is now preparing for a change in direction as he embarks on a season of gravel races. In late December, we sat down with Stetina, who enjoyed ten years at the top of elite racing at the WorldTour level.  He talks about his time in the sport, stage racing, almost losing his leg after a career-threatening crash, and how his accident forced him to take stock of everything around him. "I'm stepping away in my prime," Stetina tells us, as he looks back on a decade-long career that has spanned a number of high-profile teams.  Stetina also talks about his charity work and the causes close to him, before opening up about his hopes for the future, as he enters a new phase of his life. It's the morning after the U23 race at the World Championships and there's only one place to start and that's with the disqualification of Nils Eekhoff from the Netherlands and the decision from the UCI jury to award Samuele Battistella (Italy) with the rainbow jersey. Eekhoff had crossed the line first in Harrogate after a seven-man sprint but an hour after the finish it was announced that the UCI jury were investigating the result. Another hour went by before Eekhoff was seen leaving the race in tears. His crime, drafting after crashing with around 120km to race. The UCI only checked the footage after the race, which of course led to huge uproar from fans, journalists and fellow riders. It's fair to say that this has been the biggest talking point of the race so far. We hear from Eekhoff, his national coach, Tom Pidcock, who was bumped from fourth to third as a result, and the UCI.   To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here. http://apple.co/32jXDgY . Not for the first time in this year's Tour of Britain Mathieu van der Poel showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals for a convincing stage win that extended his lead. And not for the first time the Cyclingnews team of Philippa York and Daniel Benson were left debating whether the young Dutchman can take the rainbow jersey later this month in Yorkshire. Joined by author and journalist William Fortheringham, the team look back at the stage and consider whether van der Poel has perhaps played his cards too early ahead of Worlds, while we hear from the rider himself during his stage-winner's press conference.  Fotheringham gives us his expert view on the Worlds course having ridden it earlier this year, while York puts to bed the notion that riding on home roads offers any form of advantage. The pair then talk about the similarities between Yorkshire's course and the one raced in Oslo in 1993.  There's also time to check in with Jose Azevedo and the latest problems at Katusha-Alpecin where the riders are still waiting on news over the team's future, and we catch up with Mikel Landa on whether the move to Bahrain-Merida will finally offer him the chance of sole leadership at a team.   This podcast was brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello, Floyd's of Leadville and Wattbike.   To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here. http://apple.co/32jXDgY . Oscar Freire: The rise of a legend at the 1999 World Championships

1999 had its highs and lows. For every No Scrubs by TLC there was a Mambo Number 5 or virtually anything from the Backstreet Boys' back catalogue. Bluetooth came about, we all played Snake on our Nokia 3210s, and a Texan shocked the world by winning the Tour de France. Whatever happened to him? But when it came to professional cycling, maybe the best thing about the sport was just how inaccessible it was. If you wanted to keep up with European racing, your options were either the four lines of text posted on Ceefax, loading up Cyclingnews on your parents' dodgy modem, or waiting a week for your favourite cycling magazine to hit the shelves. However you managed to follow cycling back then, the fact that you had work for it only added to the romance. And the final UCI World Championships of the 1990s were arguably the most romantic and beautiful of the entire decade. The setting was perfect, the line-up stellar, even the race-winning break was filled with a mouthwatering array of talent. And, to top it all, we had a shock winner. This is the story of Oscar Friere's 1999 Worlds win and how a complete unknown stormed to victory in one of the biggest upsets the sport had ever seen. Join us as we re-tell the race on its 20th anniversary, and head to meet with Friere at his home in Northern Spain. Hello and welcome to the Cyclingnews podcast. This week we have three exclusive interviews just for you with Jonathan Vaughters, Alex Howes and French journalist Pierre Carrey all featuring on the episode.  First up, just to remind you, our friends at Sportful have come up with a 20% discount on all products at sportful.com. All you have to do is head to their website and use the code: cyclingnews20. This deal is in place throughout all of August. Sticking with Sportful, we still have two signed Bahrain-Merida jerseys from Vincenzo Nibali to give away. All you have to do to win is go to our iTunes page and give us a review. We'll pick the two lucky winners later this month.  We start with Jonathan Vaughters and a similar theme to last week's transfer special. In this interview, Vaughters talks about what he looks for in a rider, the different criteria at play and how he has build EF Education First. It's an eye-opening journey into the complex dynamics in play when it comes to structuring for the future and balancing both long term and immediate goals. There's also a cameo from Alex Howes, after we caught up with the US national road champion at the Tour of Utah.  Our final interview is with the well-respected French journalist Pierre Carrey who is a regular for Liberation. Carrey gives us the rundown on the Tour de l'Avenir, which starts Thursday. The ten-day race is viewed as mini Tour de France with a raft of U23 riders and future stars taking part. We talk about the relevance of the race, how team managers use it as a hunting ground for talent; how the style of racing compares to the WorldTour, and who to watch over the next fortnight.    Sponsor message Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972. In this week's episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville - we analyse the transfer market and we have three special guests, with Matt White from Mitchelton-Scott joined by rider agents Martijn Berkhout from SEG and Joao Correira from Corso. First up, we have some exciting news for our readers. Our lovely friends at Sportful have come up with a 20% discount on all products at sportful.com. All you have to do is head to their website and use the code: cyclingnews20. This deal is in place throughout all of August. Sticking with Sportful. We have two signed Bahrain-Merida jerseys from Vincenzo Nibali to give away. All you have to do to win is go to our iTunes page and give us a review. We'll pick the two lucky winners later this month. Finally, on jerseys, our signed jersey from EF Education First is going to David Churchill who subscribed to us from our Podbean Platform. David, if you're listening, drop us a line at cyclingnews@cyclingnews.com and we'll post out that signed jersey and shorts as soon as we can. But let's jump right in. The Tour is over and August 1 means one thing – the start of the transfer window. We're going to start with our interview with Matt White from Mitchelton-Scott. They've seen Matteo Trentin leave for pastures new but White has assembled one of the best teams in the WorldTour circuit. In this interview, we talk about working to a budget, making sure you sign riders who fit your team's culture and the balance between short term wins and long term development. Our next guest is Martijn Berkhout from SEG. They're one of the biggest agencies in the world and work with the likes of Dan Martin and Wout Poels, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the season. Berkhout talks about 'creating options' for his athletes and how the transfer market has changed in recent years. The Dutchman also pinpoints the main influences and elements that have shaped the market. Our final interviewee in this week's podcast Joao Correira. You may remember him from his Cervelo TestTeam days but now he runs the Corso agency alongside Ken Somner. They work with Laurens ten Dam but also a huge raft of young talent – from Tao Geoghegan Hart to Mads Pedersen and Michael Valgren. Correira also works with promising non-European riders and he talks about how he balances their hopes and dream with the reality of WorldTour cycling and the shifts in the market as more and more young athletes turn pro at a young age. The fallout from Rowe and Martin being expelled from the Tour de France

The latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast was going to be based around Matteo Trentin and his win on stage 17 of the Tour de France but then Tony Martin and Luke Rowe decided to steal the limelight by having an altercation on the final climb of the stage. The result of which was a disqualification for both riders after Martin tried to run Rowe off the road and the Ineos rider decided to retaliate by providing Martin with a close-up inspection of his right hand. The UCI regulators didn't take to kindly and booted both riders out of the race.  There was a joint video from Rowe and Martin in which they apologized but unless the UCI overturn their decision - and that's unlikely - both Ineos and Jumbo Visma will start stage 18 with a man less. This evening the Cyclingnews team headed straight to the Team Ineos hotel to soak up the atmosphere and try and talk to the riders and staff. The latter proved impossible but we debate the race rules, ask if Team Ineos have a discipline problem and discuss how the loss of two key riders effects the race going forward.  Don't forget you can win a signed EF-Education First jersey from this year's Tour de France. The 2019 Tour de France is just a matter of days away but already the Cyclingnews team has arrived in Brussels for the Grand Depart. Wednesday saw the first set of team press conferences with EF Education First and FDJ Groupama holding court in front of the gathering media. After our exclusive behind-the-scenes podcast with EF last week we were back for more and we sat down with Michael Woods for a second time as he talks about his imminent Tour de France debut. We debate Thibaut Pinot's chances of ending the French nation's drought in their home race but also wind the clock back and discuss the controversial call from Dimension Data to leave Mark Cavendish out of their Tour de France squad. The Manxman has struggled for form and fitness for the last two seasons and despite a reputation as one of the fastest riders of the last ten years, team owner Doug Ryder saw no place for him in the squad's starting eight.  Team Sunweb held their pre-Tour press conference on Wednesday too, but it the Netherlands rather than Brussels. The event was dominated by news surrounding the squad's team leaders, with Michael Matthews announcing that he had extended his contract for a further two years, while Tom Dumoulin – who of course isn't racing the Tour – forced to deny speculation that he was on the cusp of breaking his contract and moving to Jumbo Visma.  To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here: http://cyclingnews.podbean.com/ Sponsor message Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972. How EF Education First selected their Tour de France team

Exclusive and behind the scenes access with American WorldTour team In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville - we go behind the scenes with EF-Education First Pro Cycling team at their training camp in Girona, Spain, as they finalise their Tour de France roster. With exclusive access to the riders, including Rigoberto Uran, Michael Woods and Tejay van Garderen, we follow the team as they're put through there paces during two flat-out team time trial efforts.  The three-day camp took place last week and formed the backdrop for the team's final selection process for the Tour de France.  Present at the camp were Woods, van Garderen, Uran, Tanel Kangert, Mitch Docker, Lawson Craddock, Tom Scully, Sebastian Langevald, and Simon Clarke. Alberto Bettiol who was in the mix for a Tour de France spot was racing the Italian nationals at the time. Team director Charly Wegelius takes Cyclingnews through the process of team selection on the final morning of the camp and explains his goals and what he's looking for from the riders as they set out on their final test. He must narrow down a list of 10 to eight by the end of the day and over a 13-minute long time trial test - which the team ride twice - he watches on from the team car. Cyclingnews had the chance to follow in the second team car with the opportunity to listen and observe as Wegelius offers instructions over the radio before the team then begin their internal de-brief that provided a fascinating insight into team tactics and the morale within the squad. Wegelius then brings everyone together. He praises Woods and Kangert on taking shorter pulls on the front in order to keep the pace high, and he tells Scully that his skill in moving off the front of the line is so smooth that it's like watching an experienced pursuit rider in action.  Back at the team hotel, and under the baking sun, we sit down with Uran for a short interview.  It's rare moment to talk to the 2017 Tour de France runner-up about the camp and his season to date. We then look for a place to interview van Garderen. There are a set of benches in the shade a few meters away from the team buses but they are currently occupied with Wegelius and another director Andreas Klier, who are both deep in conversation with road captain Simon Clarke. It's obvious that a decision on the team is about to be made. Van Garderen  - no stranger to successful team time trial squads - takes us through how EF Education First communicates during TTT efforts. We also talk to the American about how much effort goes into the off-the-bike preparation at camps of this nature, and of course his aspirations at the Tour after his fine second place in June's Criterium du Dauphine. By the time van Garderen has left, Klier and Wegelius have done the same. They've retreated back inside the hotel for a final conference before going door-to-door at the hotel and breaking the news to the nine riders at the camp as to whether they have made the selection. For most, it's good news but for Craddock and Docker this is as far as it goes. Although  Bettiol has missed the camp due to the Italian nationals he will make the Tour team. After spending time with the riders we sit down with Wegelius. We ask him about how the team has gelled as a unit over the last three days and also how important the team time trial is in the balance of selecting their entire Tour de France Tour team. Wegelius' task is unenviable but he's selected a squad for the Tour de France that can fight on a number of fronts and even the riders who have unfortunately missed out have played their part in spurring on the eight who have been selected. Uran will challenge for the podium, Mike Woods will support and target stage wins and Van Garderen appears revitalised since his move to the team. Bettiol will have chances, and there's experience and horsepower with Langeveld, Scully, Clarke and Kangert running the engine of the team.  With the camp now over the team disperses. Some riders like van Garderen remain in Girona for extra training, while others like Uran head back to their European base in Monaco. Within a couple of hours everyone has checked out, the trucks are loaded up and the team has moved on. The next stop is Brussels and the Tour de France. However, there's one final chance to talk to Michael Woods. He's loaded up his car and is ready to head home but he agrees to sit down with us to talk about the camp and of course what will be his Tour de France debut. Overall, this was a successful camp for EF-Education First. There were some tough moments in terms of the selection process but the riders selected are of the highest caliber and they head to the Grand Depart with realistic goals. This podcast offers a rare glimpse into the minds of the riders and staff of a WorldTour squad on eve of a Grand Tour, and provides a more relaxed environment in which the athletes can talk about their training, the cohesion within the squad and their hopes for the Tour de France. With the team finally announced publicly on Tuesday, now all they have to do is deliver. Hear from Philippa York on whether Wout Van Aert is the next Sean Kelly For the second day in a row Wout Van Aert showed a clean pair of heels and dispatched with his rivals to win the stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné. The only difference this time around was that he won a messy bunch sprint rather than a time trial. However, the day was once again overshadowed by the latest news involving Chris Froome, who underwent eight hours of surgery after his horrific fall on Wednesday. We hear from Dave Brailsford who offered a medical update this morning. We also speak to Dan Martin who witnessed the crash. Martin was just a few metres behind Froome during the recon and was left shaken by the events. He talks to us about the scene on the road, his thoughts on what happened, and how precarious bike racing can be. We also have an interview with Servais Knaven who talks about the mood within the Team Ineos camp, Tour de France leadership, the plans for the rest of the Dauphiné and how the management will aim to pick the team up after the loss of their leader. Finally, we return to racing with Philippa York provider her assessment of Van Aert and whether he could in fact be the next Sean Kelly. Hear from Brailsford, Poels, Dumoulin and Porte from the Criterium du Dauphiné   Wout van Aert won the stage, Adam Yates pulled on yellow but the major talking point on stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné was the news that Chris Froome had crashed out with several fractures and will miss the Tour de France in July. Froome fell heavily and at high-speed during a recon of the stage 4 time trial around Roanne and after several hours of roadside treatment was airlifted to hospital in Saint Etienne for further treatment. It's not yet clear if surgery is required but what's clear is that Froome's hopes of winning a fifth Tour de France are over. We hear from a shocked and upset Dave Brailsford, and Wout Poels, who was with Frooome when the crash occurred, and GC riders Tom Dumoulin and Richie Porte. As throughout this year's Dauphiné, expert analysis is provided by Philippa York. The Cyclingnews podcast is brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville. In the latest instalment of the Cyclingnews podcast Daniel Benson and special guest Philippa York look back at an exciting stage at the Criterium du Dauphine. They talk about the action and hear from a quartet of  Chris Froome, Tom Domoulin, Jakob Fuglsang, and Adam Yates but the trust of the podcast centres around Thibaut Pinot and the search for a French Tour de France winner and when riders face the reality of retirement.  Pinot takes centre stage after he attacked several times on the stage and split the GC group. It was a real sign of intent and although the Tour de France is still several weeks away his performance will have drawn attention. York talks about the pressure placed on French riders since the days of Bernard Hinault and the generations of riders who have grown up in the rider's illustrious shadow.  We also talk about retirement. Stage 2 saw Steve Cummings pull of the race and although there's no indication that the rider will hang up his wheels, at the age of 38 it's not beyond the realms of possibility either. We discuss the causes of retirement and what prompts a rider to eventually make that tough decision to stop.  To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here. We followed the stage from start to finish and watched Edvald Boasson Hagen take a huge win for the struggling Dimension Data. We pose the question as to whether the team should focus their Tour de France efforts on the Norwegian or if Mark Cavendish and others deserve leadership roles. Tím EF Education First dokonale nahradil tímovú prácu vlčej svorky a rázne diktoval scenár pretekov. Taliansky deň na Ronde podčiarkla víťazstvom v ženskej kategórii Marta Bastianelli. Po Ronde nasleduje v rýchlom slede druhý vrchol kockových klasík. Pavé sektory Paríž - Roubaix preveria celého človeka a v cieli uvidíme desiatky zničených mužov. Jeden z nich však bude mať tú česť, zodvihnúť víťaznú kocku nad hlavu. Foto: facebook.com/philgaimon
