--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stervendezwanen/message
In this episode of the Cyclingnews Podcast, brought to you by Sportful, Floyds of Leadville and Pinarello, we kick off 2020 with an exclusive interview with Peter Stetina. The American rider turned away from the WorldTour at the end of the 2019 campaign, and is now preparing for a change in direction as he embarks on a season of gravel races. In late December, we sat down with Stetina, who enjoyed ten years at the top of elite racing at the WorldTour level. He talks about his time in the sport, stage racing, almost losing his leg after a career-threatening crash, and how his accident forced him to take stock of everything around him. "I'm stepping away in my prime," Stetina tells us, as he looks back on a decade-long career that has spanned a number of high-profile teams. Stetina also talks about his charity work and the causes close to him, before opening up about his hopes for the future, as he enters a new phase of his life. We hope you enjoy our discussion with Peter Stetina. To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here. Earlier this month the Cyclingnews Podcast team recorded their first episode in front of a live studio audience. Featuring expert knowledge from Philippa York and Yanto Barker - and podcast mainstays Edward Pickering from Procycling Magazine and Cyclingnews' Daniel Benson - we looked back at the last 12 months with a quickfire review of the cycling year, starting with the monuments of spring, on through the Giro, Tour de France and Vuelta and the World Championships. We even took questions from the audience. Full of genuine insight into the racing season and anecdotes from York's career, the podcast provided a neat overview of the year with one eye also looking towards the future and the riders the panel expects to dominate in 2020. Richard reports back on his trip to McLaren HQ in Woking, where he met Bahrain-Merida's new boss Rod Ellingworth and asks him about signing Mark Cavendish and reluctantly seeing world time trial champion Rohan Dennis leave. It's the morning after the U23 race at the World Championships and there's only one place to start and that's with the disqualification of Nils Eekhoff from the Netherlands and the decision from the UCI jury to award Samuele Battistella (Italy) with the rainbow jersey. Eekhoff had crossed the line first in Harrogate after a seven-man sprint but an hour after the finish it was announced that the UCI jury were investigating the result. Another hour went by before Eekhoff was seen leaving the race in tears. His crime, drafting after crashing with around 120km to race. The UCI only checked the footage after the race, which of course led to huge uproar from fans, journalists and fellow riders. It's fair to say that this has been the biggest talking point of the race so far. We hear from Eekhoff, his national coach, Tom Pidcock, who was bumped from fourth to third as a result, and the UCI. Rohan Dennis (Australia) stepped up when it mattered most to deliver a resounding win in the men's elite time trial at the World Championships on Wednesday. The Australian decimated the field to defend his 2018 title and answered many of his critics after his controversial walkout from the Tour de France in July. Dennis beat starlets Remco Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna and we hear from all three riders in our podcast. We debate where this win leaves Dennis's career and if this opens the door for a return to Bahrain Merida or if his decision to snub trade team equipment was the nail in the coffin. We analyse a number of other key performances, including several riders who underperformed and we hear from Vuelta a Espana winner Primoz Roglic. Not for the first time in this year's Tour of Britain Mathieu van der Poel showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals for a convincing stage win that extended his lead. And not for the first time the Cyclingnews team of Philippa York and Daniel Benson were left debating whether the young Dutchman can take the rainbow jersey later this month in Yorkshire. Joined by author and journalist William Fortheringham, the team look back at the stage and consider whether van der Poel has perhaps played his cards too early ahead of Worlds, while we hear from the rider himself during his stage-winner's press conference. Fotheringham gives us his expert view on the Worlds course having ridden it earlier this year, while York puts to bed the notion that riding on home roads offers any form of advantage. The pair then talk about the similarities between Yorkshire's course and the one raced in Oslo in 1993. There's also time to check in with Jose Azevedo and the latest problems at Katusha-Alpecin where the riders are still waiting on news over the team's future, and we catch up with Mikel Landa on whether the move to Bahrain-Merida will finally offer him the chance of sole leadership at a team. 1999 had its highs and lows. For every No Scrubs by TLC there was a Mambo Number 5 or virtually anything from the Backstreet Boys' back catalogue. Bluetooth came about, we all played Snake on our Nokia 3210s, and a Texan shocked the world by winning the Tour de France. Whatever happened to him? But when it came to professional cycling, maybe the best thing about the sport was just how inaccessible it was. If you wanted to keep up with European racing, your options were either the four lines of text posted on Ceefax, loading up Cyclingnews on your parents' dodgy modem, or waiting a week for your favourite cycling magazine to hit the shelves. However you managed to follow cycling back then, the fact that you had work for it only added to the romance. And the final UCI World Championships of the 1990s were arguably the most romantic and beautiful of the entire decade. The setting was perfect, the line-up stellar, even the race-winning break was filled with a mouthwatering array of talent. And, to top it all, we had a shock winner. This is the story of Oscar Friere's 1999 Worlds win and how a complete unknown stormed to victory in one of the biggest upsets the sport had ever seen. Join us as we re-tell the race on its 20th anniversary, and head to meet with Friere at his home in Northern Spain. It's an eye-opening journey into the complex dynamics in play when it comes to structuring for the future and balancing both long term and immediate goals. There's also a cameo from Alex Howes, after we caught up with the US national road champion at the Tour of Utah. Our final interview is with the well-respected French journalist Pierre Carrey who is a regular for Liberation. Carrey gives us the rundown on the Tour de l'Avenir, which starts Thursday. The ten-day race is viewed as mini Tour de France with a raft of U23 riders and future stars taking part. In this week's episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville - we analyse the transfer market and we have three special guests, with Matt White from Mitchelton-Scott joined by rider agents Martijn Berkhout from SEG and Joao Correira from Corso. First up, we have some exciting news for our readers. Our lovely friends at Sportful have come up with a 20% discount on all products at sportful.com. All you have to do is head to their website and use the code: cyclingnews20. This deal is in place throughout all of August. Sticking with Sportful. We have two signed Bahrain-Merida jerseys from Vincenzo Nibali to give away. All you have to do to win is go to our iTunes page and give us a review. We'll pick the two lucky winners later this month. Finally, on jerseys, our signed jersey from EF Education First is going to David Churchill who subscribed to us from our Podbean Platform. David, if you're listening, drop us a line at cyclingnews@cyclingnews.com and we'll post out that signed jersey and shorts as soon as we can. But let's jump right in. The Tour is over and August 1 means one thing – the start of the transfer window. We're going to start with our interview with Matt White from Mitchelton-Scott. They've seen Matteo Trentin leave for pastures new but White has assembled one of the best teams in the WorldTour circuit. In this interview, we talk about working to a budget, making sure you sign riders who fit your team's culture and the balance between short term wins and long term development. Our next guest is Martijn Berkhout from SEG. They're one of the biggest agencies in the world and work with the likes of Dan Martin and Wout Poels, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the season. Berkhout talks about 'creating options' for his athletes and how the transfer market has changed in recent years. The Dutchman also pinpoints the main influences and elements that have shaped the market. Our final interviewee in this week's podcast Joao Correira. You may remember him from his Cervelo TestTeam days but now he runs the Corso agency alongside Ken Somner. They work with Laurens ten Dam but also a huge raft of young talent – from Tao Geoghegan Hart to Mads Pedersen and Michael Valgren. Correira also works with promising non-European riders and he talks about how he balances their hopes and dream with the reality of WorldTour cycling and the shifts in the market as more and more young athletes turn pro at a young age. The latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast was going to be based around Matteo Trentin and his win on stage 17 of the Tour de France but then Tony Martin and Luke Rowe decided to steal the limelight by having an altercation on the final climb of the stage. The result of which was a disqualification for both riders after Martin tried to run Rowe off the road and the Ineos rider decided to retaliate by providing Martin with a close-up inspection of his right hand. The UCI regulators didn't take to kindly and booted both riders out of the race. There was a joint video from Rowe and Martin in which they apologized but unless the UCI overturn their decision - and that's unlikely - both Ineos and Jumbo Visma will start stage 18 with a man less. This evening the Cyclingnews team headed straight to the Team Ineos hotel to soak up the atmosphere and try and talk to the riders and staff. The latter proved impossible but we debate the race rules, ask if Team Ineos have a discipline problem and discuss how the loss of two key riders effects the race going forward. In the latest edition of the Cyclingnews podcast brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville we look back at another blockbuster at the Tour de France after seeing Simon Yates win stage 15 and Thibaut Pinot put time into all of his GC rivals. For the first time in this year's race Julian Alaphilippe looked vulnerable as the Tour reached its final summit finish in the Pyrenees. The Frenchman still has over a minute on Geraint Thomas, who in turn looked better than he did on stage 14 but still lost time to his teammate Egan Bernal. Emanuel Buchmann has now emerged as a podium contender, while the dynamic between all three of Movistar's leaders looks set to entertain us all the way to Paris. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast – brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville - we ask whether Geraint Thomas has established himself as the favourite after his impressive performance on stage 6 of the Tour de France. The defending champion came into the Tour with questions over his form but he was the best of the yellow jersey contenders – albeit by a few seconds – on the first summit finish of this year's race. We hear from the Welshman on that performance and his team boss Dave Brailsford. With further revelations over Tom Dumoulin's likely split with Team Sunweb we ask what next for the WorldTour team? We listen to Michael Matthews on his struggles with leadership, and debate if Dumoulin's rumoured move to Jumbo Visma is the right decision. There's also time to hear from former yellow jersey Julian Alaphilippe as we summarize the action from stages 6 and 7. The 2019 Tour de France is just a matter of days away but already the Cyclingnews team has arrived in Brussels for the Grand Depart. Wednesday saw the first set of team press conferences with EF Education First and FDJ Groupama holding court in front of the gathering media. After our exclusive behind-the-scenes podcast with EF last week we were back for more and we sat down with Michael Woods for a second time as he talks about his imminent Tour de France debut. We debate Thibaut Pinot's chances of ending the French nation's drought in their home race but also wind the clock back and discuss the controversial call from Dimension Data to leave Mark Cavendish out of their Tour de France squad. The Manxman has struggled for form and fitness for the last two seasons and despite a reputation as one of the fastest riders of the last ten years, team owner Doug Ryder saw no place for him in the squad's starting eight. Team Sunweb held their pre-Tour press conference on Wednesday too, but it the Netherlands rather than Brussels. The event was dominated by news surrounding the squad's team leaders, with Michael Matthews announcing that he had extended his contract for a further two years, while Tom Dumoulin – who of course isn't racing the Tour – forced to deny speculation that he was on the cusp of breaking his contract and moving to Jumbo Visma. Exclusive and behind the scenes access with American WorldTour team In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville - we go behind the scenes with EF-Education First Pro Cycling team at their training camp in Girona, Spain, as they finalise their Tour de France roster. With exclusive access to the riders, including Rigoberto Uran, Michael Woods and Tejay van Garderen, we follow the team as they're put through there paces during two flat-out team time trial efforts. The three-day camp took place last week and formed the backdrop for the team's final selection process for the Tour de France. Present at the camp were Woods, van Garderen, Uran, Tanel Kangert, Mitch Docker, Lawson Craddock, Tom Scully, Sebastian Langevald, and Simon Clarke. Alberto Bettiol who was in the mix for a Tour de France spot was racing the Italian nationals at the time. Team director Charly Wegelius takes Cyclingnews through the process of team selection on the final morning of the camp and explains his goals and what he's looking for from the riders as they set out on their final test. He must narrow down a list of 10 to eight by the end of the day and over a 13-minute long time trial test - which the team ride twice - he watches on from the team car. Cyclingnews had the chance to follow in the second team car with the opportunity to listen and observe as Wegelius offers instructions over the radio before the team then begin their internal de-brief that provided a fascinating insight into team tactics and the morale within the squad. Wegelius then brings everyone together. He praises Woods and Kangert on taking shorter pulls on the front in order to keep the pace high, and he tells Scully that his skill in moving off the front of the line is so smooth that it's like watching an experienced pursuit rider in action. Back at the team hotel, and under the baking sun, we sit down with Uran for a short interview. It's rare moment to talk to the 2017 Tour de France runner-up about the camp and his season to date. We then look for a place to interview van Garderen. There are a set of benches in the shade a few meters away from the team buses but they are currently occupied with Wegelius and another director Andreas Klier, who are both deep in conversation with road captain Simon Clarke. It's obvious that a decision on the team is about to be made. Van Garderen - no stranger to successful team time trial squads - takes us through how EF Education First communicates during TTT efforts. We also talk to the American about how much effort goes into the off-the-bike preparation at camps of this nature, and of course his aspirations at the Tour after his fine second place in June's Criterium du Dauphine. By the time van Garderen has left, Klier and Wegelius have done the same. They've retreated back inside the hotel for a final conference before going door-to-door at the hotel and breaking the news to the nine riders at the camp as to whether they have made the selection. For most, it's good news but for Craddock and Docker this is as far as it goes. Although Bettiol has missed the camp due to the Italian nationals he will make the Tour team. After spending time with the riders we sit down with Wegelius. We ask him about how the team has gelled as a unit over the last three days and also how important the team time trial is in the balance of selecting their entire Tour de France Tour team. Wegelius' task is unenviable but he's selected a squad for the Tour de France that can fight on a number of fronts and even the riders who have unfortunately missed out have played their part in spurring on the eight who have been selected. Uran will challenge for the podium, Mike Woods will support and target stage wins and Van Garderen appears revitalised since his move to the team. Bettiol will have chances, and there's experience and horsepower with Langeveld, Scully, Clarke and Kangert running the engine of the team. With the camp now over the team disperses. Some riders like van Garderen remain in Girona for extra training, while others like Uran head back to their European base in Monaco. Within a couple of hours everyone has checked out, the trucks are loaded up and the team has moved on. The next stop is Brussels and the Tour de France. However, there's one final chance to talk to Michael Woods. He's loaded up his car and is ready to head home but he agrees to sit down with us to talk about the camp and of course what will be his Tour de France debut. Overall, this was a successful camp for EF-Education First. There were some tough moments in terms of the selection process but the riders selected are of the highest caliber and they head to the Grand Depart with realistic goals. This podcast offers a rare glimpse into the minds of the riders and staff of a WorldTour squad on eve of a Grand Tour, and provides a more relaxed environment in which the athletes can talk about their training, the cohesion within the squad and their hopes for the Tour de France. With the team finally announced publicly on Tuesday, now all they have to do is deliver. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast we look back at stage 6 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. Julian Alaphilippe came out on top after winning from the early break and Philippa York gives her expert analysis on the Frenchman and who he compares to from the last two decades. We also hear from Dave Brailsford on the shock news that Juan Jose Cobo may be stripped of his 2011 Vuelta a España. Such a move would make Chris Froome the overall winner and as such the first British rider to win a Grand Tour. With the Dauphiné about to reach the mountains and the first real test since the time trial we also hear from Richie Porte and Steven Kruijswijk. Hear from Philippa York on whether Wout Van Aert is the next Sean Kelly For the second day in a row Wout Van Aert showed a clean pair of heels and dispatched with his rivals to win the stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné. The only difference this time around was that he won a messy bunch sprint rather than a time trial. However, the day was once again overshadowed by the latest news involving Chris Froome, who underwent eight hours of surgery after his horrific fall on Wednesday. We hear from Dave Brailsford who offered a medical update this morning. We also speak to Dan Martin who witnessed the crash. Martin was just a few metres behind Froome during the recon and was left shaken by the events. He talks to us about the scene on the road, his thoughts on what happened, and how precarious bike racing can be. We also have an interview with Servais Knaven who talks about the mood within the Team Ineos camp, Tour de France leadership, the plans for the rest of the Dauphiné and how the management will aim to pick the team up after the loss of their leader. Finally, we return to racing with Philippa York provider her assessment of Van Aert and whether he could in fact be the next Sean Kelly. Hear from Brailsford, Poels, Dumoulin and Porte from the Criterium du Dauphiné Wout van Aert won the stage, Adam Yates pulled on yellow but the major talking point on stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné was the news that Chris Froome had crashed out with several fractures and will miss the Tour de France in July. Froome fell heavily and at high-speed during a recon of the stage 4 time trial around Roanne and after several hours of roadside treatment was airlifted to hospital in Saint Etienne for further treatment. It's not yet clear if surgery is required but what's clear is that Froome's hopes of winning a fifth Tour de France are over. We hear from a shocked and upset Dave Brailsford, and Wout Poels, who was with Frooome when the crash occurred, and GC riders Tom Dumoulin and Richie Porte. As throughout this year's Dauphiné, expert analysis is provided by Philippa York. The Cyclingnews podcast is brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville.
In the latest instalment of the Cyclingnews podcast Daniel Benson and special guest Philippa York look back at an exciting stage at the Criterium du Dauphine. They talk about the action and hear from a quartet of Chris Froome, Tom Domoulin, Jakob Fuglsang, and Adam Yates but the trust of the podcast centres around Thibaut Pinot and the search for a French Tour de France winner and when riders face the reality of retirement. Pinot takes centre stage after he attacked several times on the stage and split the GC group. It was a real sign of intent and although the Tour de France is still several weeks away his performance will have drawn attention. York talks about the pressure placed on French riders since the days of Bernard Hinault and the generations of riders who have grown up in the rider's illustrious shadow. We also talk about retirement. Stage 2 saw Steve Cummings pull of the race and although there's no indication that the rider will hang up his wheels, at the age of 38 it's not beyond the realms of possibility either. We discuss the causes of retirement and what prompts a rider to eventually make that tough decision to stop. To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here. In the latest edition of the Cyclingnews podcast we hear from Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Michal Kwiatkowski after stage 1 of the Critérium du Dauphiné. We followed the stage from start to finish and watched Edvald Boasson Hagen take a huge win for the struggling Dimension Data. We pose the question as to whether the team should focus their Tour de France efforts on the Norwegian or if Mark Cavendish and others deserve leadership roles. Philippa York shares memories on the importance of winning the Dauphiné and where the race stands in terms of the history of the sport and what it means to riders. We discuss form at this point of the season and then hear from three of the stars at this year's race: Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Michal Kwiatkowski. Richard Carapaz von Movistar konnte den 102. Giro d’ Italia vor Vincenco Nibali von Bahrain Merida und Jumbo Visma Profi Primoz Roglic für sich entscheiden. Etappensieger des 17 Kilometer langen Abschlusszeitfahrems ist Chad Haga von Sunweb. Bei der Schweizer MTB Meisterschaft holt Nino Schurter von Scott-Sram seinen bereits achten Meistertitel. Bei den Frauen ist Jolanda Neff von Trek Factory die Schnellste. Die Gesamtwertung der Tour of Norway sichert sich UAE-Team-Emirates Fahrer Alexander Kristoff.
The 102nd edition of the Giro d’Italia is well into its final week with 3 stages and a time-trial remaining. The favorites, Richard Carapaz of Movistar, Vincenzo Nibali of Bahrain-Merida, and Primož Roglič of Jumbo-Visma, are separated by 2 minutes. Can Carapaz hold on to his lead and win his first Grand Tour and Movistar’s first since 2016? Can Nibali attack long and hard enough to drop his opponents and cement his place in Giro history as a three time winner along with Bartali, Gimondi, and Hinault. Will Roglič hold on and take the lead during the last Time Trial in Verona? Hot on their heals are the runner-ups, Mikel Landa, Bauke Mollema, and Simon Yates. Can they Froome this edition and regain back 5 or more minutes on the favorites? (Not likely) We cast our predictions of what’s to come. The 2019 Amgen Tour of California featured 10 Danish riders, as many as there were Italians. In the WorldTour the only nation without a pro-team that has more riders is Columbia. We talk to two Danish pros and discuss what is contributing to such a strong showing in the Men and Women’s WorldTour. In the news we highlight Phil Gaimon’s Olympic efforts and talk about the gravel race to end all gravel races, the Dirty Kanza. No prize list, but 5 Pro riders taking part for the first time.
In the latest edition of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville – we look back on the last week of the Giro d'Italia and preview the main contenders as the race embarks on the final three stages. Richard Carapaz three stages away from winning the Giro d'Italia – although the final two days of racing are in the mountains before we have the final 17km time trial in Verona. However, former two-time winner Vincenzo Nibali waits in the wings and will look to exploit any shine of weakness. We hear from Primoz Roglic and his director sportif Addy Engels, Pavel Sivakov who is riding high in the top-ten, Connor Dunne who is making his Giro debut, and Esteban Chaves after his second place finish on stage 17. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville, we look back on the opening week of the Giro d'Italia and debate whether the race is effectively over after Primoz Roglic put significant time between himself and his rivals in the stage 9 time trial. There are still two weeks of racing and a flurry of mountain stages to come and while Roglic is in the driving seat the likes of Vincenzo Nibali will be confident of at least trying to unsettle the Jumbo Visma rider. Simon Yates, on the other hand, has several minutes to make up after a shocking time trial on stage 9, and we debate whether the British climber can bounce back in the second half of the week. We hear from Tom Dumoulin and discuss whether his departure is good or bad for Roglic, and finally we hear from Caleb Ewan, who won his first Grand Tour stage in Lotto Soudal colours on stage 8. The rain fell on the Giro d’Italia peloton more or less the whole way from Frascati to Terracina, meaning a sketchy sprint finish at the end of stage five. Join Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe as they attempt to dry out in Terracina as they recap a very wet day and a second stage win for Giro d’Italia debutant Pascal Ackermann of the Bora-Hansgrohe team. We discuss Tom Dumoulin’s departure from the Giro with Dutch journalist Hans Ruggenberg after the 2017 champion and 2018 runner-up withdrew a few kilometres into the stage following his crash yesterday. We speculate on whether Primoz Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma team may be happy to let the pink jersey go out on loan during tomorrow’s hilly stage to San Giovanni Rotondo and there’s reaction to the doping scandal that forced Bahrain-Merida’s Kristjian Koren out of the race, including an interview with the team’s coach Paolo Slongo. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville, Daniel Benson and Philippa York wrap up the final day's action from the Tour de Yorkshire. The stage finished in Leeds with Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) winning ahead of the Team Ineos duo of Chris Lawless and Eddie Dunbar. Lawless' second place was enough for the British rider to win his first stage and race and take Team Ineos' first win since their launch earlier in the week. We hear from Lawless on his win, and Van Avermaet after the Olympic road champion took his second win of the season. We catch up Chris Froome after the four-time Tour de France winner set up Dunbar and Lawless on the road to Leeds. Froome talks about his form, and Tour de Yorkshire but keeps his cards close to his chest of the Ineos line up for the Giro d'Italia. Speaking of the Italian Grand Tour, Dunbar may be about to make his debut at a three week-race we interview him at the finish in Leeds, with Team Ineos set to announce the full Giro d'Italia line up in the next 24 hours. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Flyods of Leadville, we hear from Marianne Vos after her incredible win at the Tour de Yorkshire. We also hear from Lizzie Diegnan on her return to racing, and Philippa York and author William Fotheringhan talk about the Harrogate Worlds course. Fotheringham was out on Friday riding the course and likened it to the Oslo course from 1993. He and York talk a walk down memory lane and discuss both the Norwegian course and Harrogate's 2019 parcours. We then jump to the men's Tour of Yorkshire and debate the stage that saw Alexander Kamp defy the odds but take home a well-deserved win ahead of Chris Lawless and Team Ineos. There's a segment looking ahead to Sunday's final stage with York providing her ever-excellent analysis. And of course we talk about the news that Egan Bernal has broken a collarbone and will miss the Giro d'Italia. Where does this leave Team Ineos on the eve of their Grand Tour debut. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville, we report from stage 1 of the Tour de Yorkshire. We hear from stage winner and race leader Jesper Asselman and 18-year-old American Kevin Vermaerke, who was part of the early break and almost survived to the finish in Selby. Philippa York and Daniel Benson also talk about the low key but vocal protestors who turned out to demonstrate again Team Ineos and their owner Jim Ratcliffe. We hear from a protestor who had changed his name legally to Joe Public, while at the finish we caught up with a vitriolic Dave Brailsford who came out swinging, telling the press that, “there was hardly anybody there, let's be honest, let's be real for once. The 15,000-mob that was to attack me this morning didn't really materialise. That's the reality. There were people there with the right to an opinion and I respect that but they've got a right to their opinion and that's it.” To subscribe to the Cyclingnews podcast, click here https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-cycling-news-podcast/id1012929015 Sponsor message Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyd's of Leadville – the Cyclingnews team venture to the small northern village of Linton, in Yorkshire for the Team Ineos launch. Team owner Jim Ratcliffe, Dave Brailsford and Chris Froome were on hand to show off the new team kit and the new Pinarello F12 but the majority of the press event was centred around the controversy surrounding Ineos's business interests, and most notably their fracking policies, which have drawn criticism from environmental groups. Ratcliffe and Brailsford both defended the team's position while we hear from four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome on a flurry of issues from the moral questions over team ownership; Tour de France training; the departure of Rod Ellingworth and how the news filtered through over a new team ownership after Sky announced their departure. Philippa York, who will be joining Cyclingnews throughout the four-day race, gives her take on the Ineos controversy and argues that the team were given a slightly harsh time at the press event. She also shares her experience of team presentations including the time Luc Leblanc danced on stage to the time a TVM boss had his daughter jump out of a cake mid-presentation. There is no doubt that sports teams now have a huge reach, with fans all over the globe, following their teams passionately through apps, OTT streaming, and social channels. The norm is for teams to be bound to their home country while traveling domestically for away fixtures. There are some sports teams, however, that travel the globe competing and that includes cycling. While some teams may yearn for the ability to take their sport across the world, and engage with non-domestic markets, it does come with its own unique set of challenges. In this episode, Kolja Koracak, Brand Director, takes us inside sponsorship at Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team. One awesome thing that Kolja mentions is the 360 video the team put together. You can connect with Kolja on LinkedIn and find out more about Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team on their official website. Before we hear from Kolja, Daniel Ferguson-Hill, SponServe’s Commercial Manager for Australasia, joins us to discuss the changing face of sponsorship deals and what the next generation looks like. Enjoy.

There’s no such thing as a routine sprint stage on the Vuelta a España and stage three in the Andalucian countryside featured more climbing than the hilly stages of some races. Despite that the race concluded with a sprint showdown between two Italian riders. In this episode, Lionel Birnie is joined by Daniel Friebe and Fran Reyes in Alhaurín de la Torre to recap the stage and in the process prove there’s no such thing as a routine episode of The Cycling Podcast either. We hear from Giacomo Nizzolo, who came close to winning his first grand tour stage, and from Lukas Pöstlberger about his late attack. In part two with Daniel, we talk about Elia Viviani’s victory and clear up once and for all whether Ilnur Zakarin’s Tour de France was a hit or a miss with his Katusha team-mate Ian Boswell. And in part three we discuss the big transfer concerning the Izagirre brothers and find out why they are moving from Bahrain-Merida to Astana and we ask whether there’s any substance in the rumours that Mikel Landa might be joining them in pale blue sooner rather than later. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.
In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap the European Championships road race, won by Matteo Trentin. We also hear from George Bennett of LottoNL-Jumbo about his fourth place in the Tour of Poland and his ambitions for the forthcoming Vuelta a Espana. And, after a good week for young riders on the big stage, we look at the next generation. The Tour de l'Avenir starts on Friday and many of the World Tour teams will be keeping a close eye on the racing. We hear from Bahrain-Merida's manager Brent Copeland – who recently signed Welsh climber Stevie Williams after he finished fifth in the Baby Giro – about how the top teams look for the stars of tomorrow. In this episode of The Cycling Podcast Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau discuss a tough, tricky and hilly stage through the Breton countryside that saw a familiar winner in Quimper. World champion Peter Sagan won with a perfectly timed sprint on the final hill – it was his second stage win of the race – but he was pushed all the way by Bahrain-Merida rider Sonny Colbrelli. We hear from Colbrelli’s team manager Brent Copeland about his sprinter and also team leader Vincenzo Nibali. Dan Martin of Ireland was in the top ten but he will be looking to tomorrow’s finish at Mûr de Bretagne. We hear from him about the race so far and the number of crashes that have occurred in the opening days. We discuss the needle between breakaway companions Lilian Calmejane and Toms Skuijns, who took the king of the mountains jersey and look ahead to the second of two action-packed stages in Brittany. (1:34:50 – 1:57:05). SÍGUENOS EN: iTunes: El Maillot iVoox: El Maillot Twitter: @ElMaillot_ Facebook: @ElMaillotOficial Instagram: @elmaillot YouTube: El Maillot

Stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia was described as a transition day but it was short, fast and furious before Elia Viviani claimed his fourth stage win in Iseo. Looking ahead to three more tough days in the mountains, and the stages that will decide the race, we spoke at the start in Riva del Garda to riders and managers about the possible effect of smaller teams at this Giro. The move from nine to eight riders per team was to improve safety and reduce the chances of a strong team controlling the race, but has it worked? Brent Copeland, the general manager at Bahrain-Merida, Marco Pinotti, a coach at BMC, and Eusebio Unzué, who runs the Movistar team, all give their verdict, as does Markel Irizar, who rides for Trek-Segafredo. In this episode we also hear from Viviani’s director, Rik Van Slycke, and we speak to Mattia Gavazzi, once one of Italy’s great sprinting talents but whose career ended in shame after three positive tests for cocaine. In Episode 98 the Warren brothers promote the Warren Cycling Podcast Strava Cycling Club. It's good to be a part of a cycling community. Randy and Dean discuss the end of the European road racing campaign where Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali won Il Lambardia in Italy and fellow countryman Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) won Paris-Tours in a three up sprint. Road racing continues in Turkey with the World Tour stage race, and a couple of American based teams race in the Tour of Taihu Lake in China. Many racers are taking a break now and Randy suggest ways to bridge the time between seasons. The Warrens round out the podcast talking about the Masters Track World Championships and cyclo-cross racing.
Foto: www.facebook.com/pg/letour
