We probably forgot to list a few things. The 2017 videogame Night in the Woods is the subject of this episode's Spotlight. With dream pastries in hand, Anet, Thixian, Kodiac, Velcar and HALO make their way thru the Village of Barovia where they meet a family with a problem and come face to face with the ruler of the land. About Royally Screwed Royally Screwed is a campaign featuring our group of idiots. We are far from being a professional group. We apologize ahead of time for the goofiness of our players and the idiotic comments that arise during our play. While we hope to entertain you, our first goal is to laugh and be entertained ourselves. You can find Royally Screwed's offically log-blog at https://royallystrahd.blogspot.com Our Cast of Characters: Velcar Deverell - Dhampire Fighter Quiet and reserved, Velcar descended from a line of nomadic humans in the land of Narfell. After an attack on his village by a coven of vampires, with many were killed and his mother raped, he was born half vampire. As he grew older and his vampire abilities grew, he was shunned by his tribe and eventually was forced to leave the home that he knew, but not before he slaughtered his tribe after they killed his mother. He now hunts the dark creatures to prevent further atrocities from happening again. Velcar travels the lands with his cat, Grimm. He is currently played by Warpfactor, who proudly serves in the US Military. Anet - Male Owl Aarakocra Ranger Anet is the party's death from above. Born human, as an 18 year old warrior he entered a forest to confront an owlbear that had been plaguing his village. However, this particular owlbear was sacred to one of the gods who was unpleased by the death of the creature and turned the man into an owl-man hybrid, an owl aarakora. Anet, saddened by this turn of events, began wandering the lands to break the curse and eventually came across a young owlbear cub who's mother had been killed. He took the cub in and raised it as his own, naming her Ava. Anet is played by RatGirl, the 14 year old member of our household, who tends to have quite the potty mouth during our gameplay. Thixian Envarius - Male Half Elf Bard Thixian was born into a noble family, his human mother married Lord Envarius, Duke of Hetherford. While he had all he ever needed, ate from silver utensils, and hand servants to wait on him hand and foot, he never felt free. His only friend being the Tressym, Wraith, which he had since he was young. He would often sneak out of his castle to venture to the nearby village full of the lower class, armed with nothing more than his lyre. He would visit the bar in the center of town and sing and play his heart out. One day a newcomer came into the bar, an owl aarakora, which Thixian took interest in. In between songs he would sit and talk to the man about his adventures and wished to have his own adventure one day. Thixian finally snapped when he was told he would be wed to a woman he'd never met before. As a final slap-in-the-face to his parents, he stole as much money and goods, summoned Wraith to his side, and ran. With the money, he bought a rapier and the rest went to the people of the village.Thixian is played by 23 year old XionLark. HALO - Male Warforged Barbarian Waking up on a table in an empty room of an abandoned building, Halo has no recollection of who he is, who he was, where he is and where he has come from. The only clues to his previous life are held in a folder found on a nearby desk - a sketch of the man he was, and a brief description of a soldier who had fallen in battle, to have his soul encapsulated into a metal body. The only memories he has of his past life lie in his ability to wield the weapons of war that seem to come natural for him. Halo is played by 14 year old Akrul, who is on the autism spectrum and tends to be more reserved during our gameplay. Kodiac the Killer - Male Eladrin Ranger It was a cool winters day as several travelers walk into the Fox's Folly Pub. They sit down and see the owner, an Elf with a pet fox. As the travelers go up to the pubs owner they ask his name. The elf says "My name is Kodiak The Killer and I have ran this pub for 50 years how can I help you?" The travelers ask for a Winter Fox (a white ale) and then asks "how did you get the name Kodiak The Killer?" Kodiak responds "Kodiak is my first name and The Killer is a name I got from the 50 years of battle I have been in to save my elfish home." The travelers at aw ask "Would you be down to join us in one more adventure?" Kodiak responds " You Have My Bow." Kodiac is played by Foxx, who also serves proudly in the US Military. About The Dungeon Master Finally, no adventuring party is complete without the person behind the screen, helping to weave the story into something that the players can enjoy and make memories over. Yours truly, Breaga Magesblood, will be the Dungeon Master (DM) for this campaign. This will be the second campaign (not counting one shots) that I will be directing. I would like to say that I can enthrall you with wonderful voices, vivid imagery and amazing NPCs to the same skill of Matthew Mercer, Chris Perkins and Matthew Colville. This would be a lie. Instead, I have spent months listening to these DM greats and try to take what I know I can successfully accomplish without being too campy - yes, I'm guilty of stealing the famous line "How do you want to do this?" but I know I am not Mercer and I do not try to be. Try as I might, my NPCs tend to all sound like backwood hicks from Arkansas. However, my kids do enjoy my goblin and orc voices. We still have fun, in spite of my short falls. After several episodes with either more or less than the three main hosts, Grant, Peter, and Jenny finally get to sit down together and talk about monsters just in time for Halloween! First, though, there's a bit of catching up to do, and a delightful question from Patreon supporter Richard Lorenz who asks a simple, seasonally-appropriate question: "Favorite holiday?" Once our Scripture's read, we dive into monsters, and specifically monsters as representations of the monstrous and of the diseased. We touch on what few monsters appear in Scripture, and then run through a number of classic monsters and terrific archetypes to discuss them. We also talk a bit about monsters as representations of the 'other.' Enjoy! Also mentioned in this episode: "Action Oriented Monsters" by Matthew Colville; E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series; and Kei-Con. Scripture: Job 41:1-10, 1 Samuel 28:8-13, 1 Corinthians 10:17-22
This week we are joined by Brad and Logan to talk about Strongholds & Followers by Matthew Colville. They talk us through the what a stonghold is, how to build one, and ways to use them in your games.
