Since the blatant electoral fraud that took place on July 28, the Maduro regime in Venezuela has sought to repress its way out of mass protests demanding political change. The regime's heavy-handed crackdown comes at a time when the International Criminal Court has already been investigating Venezuela for alleged crimes against humanity. As the regime seeks to silence dissent and close the civic space, this pending case may represent one of the few remaining levers the international community can apply to instill restraint, but only if such an approach is carefully considered. In this episode, Christopher Hernandez-Roy sits down with Santiago Canton, Secretary General of the International Commission of Jurists and a member of the Panel of Independent International Experts on the Possible Commission of Crimes against Humanity in Venezuela of the Organization of American States. Together, they discuss the state of the ICC's investigation and how it is likely to develop in light of the abuses the regime has committed in the past three months. They also delve into the debate around whether the ICC case represents an impediment to political change, or if it remains a useful means of applying pressure on the regime.

Do watch HG Gaurmandal Das, Vice-President Hare Krishna Movement- Mumbai giving lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam. Human society, at the present moment, is not in the darkness of oblivion. It has made rapid progress in the field of material comforts, education and economic development throughout the entire world. But there is a pinprick somewhere in the social body at large, and therefore there are large-scale quarrels, even over less important issues. There is need of a clue as to how humanity can become one in peace, friendship and prosperity with a common cause. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam will fill this need, for it is a cultural presentation for the re-spiritualization of the entire human society. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam should be introduced also in the schools and colleges, for it is recommended by the great student-devotee Prahlāda Mahārāja in order to change the demoniac face of society. Welcome Back to Gratitude Through Hard Times! You'll learn on this episode how one of the nation's insurance leaders is fueled by authenticity and vulnerability, superpowers available to all of us if we're brave enough to go there. In the case of our guest, Heath Ritenour, a bout with cancer proved an opportunity to drop the corporate mask in favor of prioritizing human connection among the 1,500 employees and 72,000 customers affiliated with Insurance of America (IOAUSA), among the nation's largest private agencies. We learn about how Heath came to embrace the family business, founded by his parents, and carve out a leadership style that has supported exponential growth. As he explains to Host Chris Schembra, Heath has reaped profound rewards through the practice of gratitude, personally and in the workplace context. He doesn't bother with the posturing and business armor so many of us reflexively wear, looking instead for those human places where relationships flourish. It's a formula that attracts and retains great talent and cements loyalty among customers in direct proportion. “The transformational side of building deeper relationships and being open, of being connected with your team, is more growth, more profit and a happier, more cohesive team,” says Heath. And that's exactly how things have played out at Orlando-based IOA's 60 locations and counting. Empathy is woven into the corporate fabric and serves as an invitation for growth through hard times. So go ahead! Be brave. Drop the mask and make that shift. When we remember to witness life's blessings, we are generating more of the same. It's all a question staying mindful, says Heath: “It's not what you gotta do but what you get to do!” Want to follow what the thought leaders at IOAUSA are up to? KEY TOPICS:If you could give credit or thanks to one person in your life that you don't give enough credit or thanks to – that you've never thought to thank – who would that be and why? Coach Fred, a recently deceased high school football coach who was tough but also helped Heath learn to prioritize his commitments in business – and life!Shifting Mindset: How thoughtful, deep conversations with an early mentor helped Heath reorder his sense of what really mattered in life (well beyond girls, partying and football!).About Authenticity: A look at the sense of trust and honesty Heath's high school football coach cultivated and how it enabled the younger man to embrace enduring values.Leaning Into Vulnerability: Why Heath has come to understand that being transparent, even where we feel weak or challenged, is integral to establishing real trust with teams.Getting Real: About Heath's bout with cancer and how that journey became an opportunity to shed the posturing, discard the corporate mask and lead with empathy.Tip of the Hat to Mom & Dad: What it looks like to develop a business based on advocacy, partnership and consultative advice and how Heath ultimately took the baton. If Not You, Who? How Heath came to a spiritual understanding that he had something to bring to his family business and clientele.Exponential Growth: About the organic way in which Heath (in spite of his fears) has worked with his team to build IOA and its unique corporate culture and values. It's the Setbacks! Heath explains why challenge and adversity are a growth opportunity. It's when we blow it or fall short that we're offered the chance to evolve and deepen. The Impediment to Action Advances Action: Why today's atmosphere of scarcity, anxiety and rapid technological change offers an invitation to turn suffering – and whatever stands in the way – into a path towards promise.Heath's Top Advice:Take stock and recognize that very likely the most challenging times are also the ones that prompt the most growth and spiritual development.Recognize the power in offering vulnerability as a meeting place and valuable intersection for bonding in every arena of life.Be brave. Drop the mask – then watch good things happen!Remember that profit and growth are an outgrowth of nurturing relationships.Closing Thoughts:Navigating the current crisis of disconnection and alienation in the workplace demands an attitude of empathy, service and heart. Do business the right way – by investing in your people – and the community will thrive and demonstrate great returns! When you cultivate gratitude through daily practice, you have it to share!Make the shift! Remember: It's not what you “gotta do,” it's what you get to do! QUOTABLE“Heath has grown his company by investing in his people, doing business the good way, honoring faith, taking care of families and knowing your business is only as good as your people.” (Chris) “So much in people's lives we forget the importance of the impact we make on people … and there's nothing better than (changing lives). It's better than money or anything I can think of.” (Heath) “Gratitude just feels good to give, even if the recipient isn't here to receive it.” (Chris) “When I'm open with my weaknesses and challenges – when I'm authentic and vulnerable in that way – it opens (others) up to feel comfortable being more open with me. And then you can build a more cohesive relationship from there.” (Heath) “We all know there's no perfect. It's a fool's errand. It's a treadmill to nowhere. We're all flawed and we all have issues!” (Heath) “The greater you can empathize with what your teammates are actually going through, the greater your ability to actually work together to innovate and create outsized business results.” (Chris) “The transformational side of building deeper relationships and being open, of being connected with your team, is more growth, more profit and a happier, more cohesive team. And that's what I think any business leader should want!” (Heath) “It's very simple: Take off your mask. Number two: Invite your team to take off their masks. Number three: Invite your customers to take off their masks.” (Chris) “Having a mindset of being grateful changes the way you feel and how you show up. It changes the way you deal with and overcome difficulties. Take a few minutes to think not about what you want and don't have but the blessings in your life!” (Heath) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to listen to episode 225, featuring Geoff McDonald's insights into Mental health and well-being.Learn more about “emotional regulation,” why it's important and strategies to help you get there at this link.Click here to find out about Kurt Vonnegut's “Man in the Hole” theory.More thoughts on gratitude from CEO Ron Carson on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times.Check out works by Marcus Aurlelius and the Stoics at this website.Listen to Jim Harter of the Gallup Poll correlate customer engagement with employee engagement on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times. Many Scrum Masters will recognize the impediment to Agile adoption that Elly mentions in this episode: there are other, interdependent parts of the organization that are not using Agile! However, the way in which this impediment expresses itself is very diverse between organizations. In this episode, we explore one of the anti-patterns that comes from trying to implement Agile in a previously waterfall organization. Listen in to learn to recognize the signs of problems, and how to help your organization despite this “glass ceiling”. About Elly Griffith-Ward Elly is an Agile Coach at a major e-commerce company. Previously in user research (and a royal food historian). She aims to 1) improve the experience of work through reducing mental load, improving communication and forming strong teams 2) shift the focus from managing the worker to managing the work by focusing on flow and waste. I'm kinda obsessed with re-thinking the layout of boardrooms. Here's why. SCRIPT If you're super attentive, you might have noticed me referring a few times this season to the impact of boardroom layout on good governance. This episode is where I admit that I'm kinda OBSESSED with the idea of re-thinking boardrooms. You remember last episode when I said 1000% improvement can come from 1% change? I think this is a good example of where a small change can have a HUGE impact. Over the past few decades, you've probably noticed a whole bunch of experiments in workspace optimization. Cubicles, open concept, private offices, hoteling, space for play, remote work, and more. Smart managers are interested in exploring and better understanding how the work environment affects morale, productivity, culture, innovation, and ultimately organizational success. Absolutely *none* of that curiosity has broken through the impenetrable barrier of the boardroom door. But let's be honest: why is your boardroom laid out the way it is? Other than it being the way every boardroom is laid out, that is. What is your current layout good for? How is it serving good governance? What other layouts might contribute to effective conditions for making decisions? What if a “typical” boardroom layout with a single oval or rectangle or square or circle or horseshoe with chairs around the outside and a screen at one end, etc., became illegal? What other options would you consider, and why?

Speeding up the results is always a tempting offer. However, speed often creates drag in our lives. The more we rush things, the more we drag the process down. This is a simple principle of aerodynamics. So in this episode of The Mentee Podcast, I invited Nick McLean, a real estate broker and trained airline pilot, to talk about this. He shares the importance of slowing down, committing to your routine, and trusting the process. Reduce drag in your life and reach your life's maximum potential. Does this sound like something you need to learn? Tune in to this episode, and start getting rid of the drag impeding your life! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Stick to your routine. Eliminate the drag in life. Do not be ashamed of what you do. Push on despite impediments. Episode Highlights: [03:24] Nick's Writing Regimen For Nick, writing his thoughts is an essential routine. Every day, he writes about his learnings and ideas, whether it's about real estate, aerodynamics, or life. Then, he shares them through blogs, social media, and emails. It's a productive routine, but it takes determination and some contingencies to stick to it. [15:15] How to Eliminate the Drags in Life People always like to speed up the process. However, the principle of aerodynamics teaches this: speed creates drag. Speed is oftentimes not sustainable, and this applies to many different pursuits in life. Writing improves with practice over time. Real estate investments take time to compound. Trust the process and slow down. [28:15] Transitioning to Real Estate Getting into real estate was not a quick decision for Nick. There was a lot of back-and-forths – a lot of drag. He did not want to acknowledge the salesperson in him, and a lot of people don't. But once he did, he was able to eliminate a lot of drag from his life. There's no shame in acknowledging what you do. [36:12] Pushing On Despite Impediments During the market recession in 2012, many real estate agents quit. However, those who remained and persisted were able to benefit eventually from the lesser competition. When you push on despite the impediments, the benefits compound over time. Notable quotes from the Episode: [16:10] “As you're creating speed, you're also creating drag.” [27:36] “Leaders are really good at pointing out problems and telling people they did it wrong. They need to be better at finding how to make it easier for them.” [41:13] “Survival equals growth in the midst of a recession.” Resources Mentioned: Connect with Wyatt Graves: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wyattgraves/ (LinkedIn) | https://wyattgraves.com/ (Website) The Mentee Podcast: https://thementee.com/podcast/ (Website) | https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-mentee-podcast/id957438503 (Apple) | https://open.spotify.com/show/54f2lCwK07XLoMnu80Efj5 (Spotify) Connect with Nick McLean: https://www.nickmcleanrealestate.com/ (Website) | https://www.facebook.com/nickmcleanrealestategroup/ (Facebook) | Email https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Money-Timeless-lessons-happiness/dp/0857197681 (The Psychology of Money by Morgan House)

What are model organisms? Why have they been so important to biology? Much of biological research over the past 50 years has relied on model organisms. These species – which include mice, rats, fruit flies, and others – have yielded many insights and led to the development of better molecular tools and a scientific culture centered on sharing. At the same time, the money and effort devoted to model organisms may have undermined work on a broader diversity of species, more representative of life as a whole. In this episode, we talk with Sabina Leonelli and Rachel Ankeny, two philosophers of biology, about the history of model organisms and the positives and negatives of studying them. Sabina Leonelli is a professor and director of the Exeter Center for the Study of Life Sciences. Rachel Ankeny is a professor in the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide. They are also authors of the book Model Organisms, a philosophical exploration of the concept of the 'model organism' in contemporary biology.
