Fear of flying is one of the most common phobias in the U.S., but my guest today knew he wanted to spend his life in the air the moment his dad let him climb into a cockpit. But, a fear of heights and claustrophobia are probably the last two things you'd want if your dream was to become a fighter-pilot.And yet my guest today endured both while doing what he loved and teaching others to do the same. Waldo Waldman flew F-16s as an instructor, and in combat, serving in  the United States Air Force for more than two decades, and his story is proof that passion can be made greater than fear when communication and community are at the core of what you're doing. Now a NYT bestselling author and National Speakers Hall of Fame inductee, he sits down to share stories from his life and lessons from his book, Never Fly Solo, in this week's episode of Legal Grounds. We discuss the myth of the Maverick - both in the air and in the board-room, the need for leaders to take the time to learn about their team, and why your backup plan really should have a backup plan. Enjoy the show!SHOWNOTES:Waldo's NYT Bestseller - "Never Fly Solo" Yourwingman.comContact Waldo at: info@yourwingman.com

Welcome to Grit Nation, I'm Joe Cadwell the host of the show and on today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Waldo Waldman, a former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, who is now a highly sought after motivational speaker and executive coach. He is also the author of The New York Times best seeking book, Never Fly Solo.Known to the tens of thousands of people who have attended his leadership seminars as the Wingman, Waldo's unique and powerful presentation style was honed razor sharp during his time as an F-16 fighter pilot. We'll open today's conversation by learning the dynamics of teamwork, and why it is so important to have people that you can count on to help get through the tough jobs, whether that's flying fighter jets in combat, closing big business deals or racing to complete a construction project on time. Next we'll hear how a close call while scuba diving nearly ended Waldo's career after triggering a phobia of confined spaces that he didn't even know he had. We'll then learn what steps he took to master his fear so he could continue to follow his passion for flying jets.Next, we'll discuss the importance of cultivating strong, long lasting relationships built on mutual trust and respect, so that you always have wingmen by your side when life gets turbulent. And we'll wrap up our conversation as we discuss Waldo's transition from the military to professional coach and speaker and why he is so passionate about helping others reach their fullest potential. The Show NotesWaldo Waldman's Websitehttps://yourwingman.comFree audio copy of Never Fly Solohttps://ace.yourwingman.com/nfs/NW Carpenters Union United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Regional Council in the Pacific NorthwestUnion Home Plus Union Home Plus helps union members save money when they buy, sell, or finance their home. In this episode, Lieutenant Colonel Waldo Waldman talks about overcoming a fear of heights and claustrophobia to become a decorated combat veteran. Waldo shares his two acronyms of the word FEAR, how one helped him soar and how we can all apply his lesson in our everyday lives.  We all have things that can hold us back.  For the fighter pilot that drag might be excessive artillery.  For the aircraft to take-off, there needs to be enough speed under the wings to lift the aircraft. We all have drag that slows us down. We must find ways to get more lift and allow ourselves to soar.  Waldo talks about how to overcome our daily drag and get more lift in our lives.NOTE: In my intro I mis-spoke and said that Lt. Col. Waldo Waldman graduated from the United States Naval Academy when, in fact, it was the United States Air Force Academy. My apologies for that mistake.

Rob “Waldo” Waldman is a decorated former fighter pilot for the U.S. Air Force. He is also a professional leadership speaker, and the author of Never Fly Solo, a book on how to reach new heights in business through building trusting relationships. A lot of lessons can be learned through flying a plane. It requires focus, preparation, and even teamwork! When Bill and his team are training his clients’ teams on execution, they will normally show a picture of planes flying in formation. It’s a powerful image because there’s so much work that goes into it making look flawless. The same metaphor can be transferred over into business. Whatever you do in life, one thing remains certain, there will be uncertainty, there will be fear, and there will be doubt! There will be things out there that are outside of your control, and this is where true leadership will come into place. A good leader can navigate through the unknown and bring his people out onto the other side. Fear strikes us all at very different times. For example, Rob had to get over his fear of heights. One of the requirements to graduating in the academy was he had to jump off a 30ft diving board and it was the scariest thing ever! Bill can agree. He’s jumped out of planes as well as flew them and yet, the diving board is what got him. There’s no predicting where your fear is going to hit you at any moment. Fear strikes when you least expect it! The good news is, the opposite of fear is growth. If you’re able to break out of your comfort zone, you’re already on your way to creating new heights for you and your business.   Interview Links: yourwingman.cominfo@yourwingman.com Never Fly Solo Book       More Resources:Bill on YouTube: Short videos to keep you growing. Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Rob “Waldo” Waldman, professional wingman and leadership expert. Waldo is his call sign from his days as a fighter pilot. The Wingman, as Waldo is known, is a professional leadership speaker, and author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller, Never Fly Solo. He teaches organizations how to build trusting, revenue-producing relationships with their employees, partners, and customers, while sharing his experiences as a combat-decorated F-16 fighter pilot and successful businessman. Jan and Jim talk with Waldo about what it means to have a wingman, to be a wingman, to build the trusting, mutually beneficial relationships wingmen share, and what role a wingman plays in the business world. Listen in to learn how to nurture trust in your organization, and how your core values are central to that trust.   Key Takeaways [3:25] The term wingman came from the person at the pilot’s 9 (or 3) o’clock position, who could see the pilot’s 6 o’clock, and keep them from being shot down. It’s about mutual support, calling out the threat, and having the trust necessary to take action. [6:04] From a networking perspective, we’re seeing a lot of that ‘pay it forward,’ honorable behavior, as networking becomes more mainstream. [6:36] Part of the Code of Honor at the Air Force Academy is, “We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does.” [7:31] ‘Wingwork’ is thinking about who you’re going to help; about what questions to ask to help this person who may be struggling; and about who you know, who could also help. [8:00] Being a wingman takes time and effort. We’ve got to build a relationship, and establish trust, by honoring the relationship with mutual support, by nurturing and appreciating — not just picking each other’s brains to extract value from them. [13:27] Sometimes it’s important to manufacture pressure in business — business may not seem like a life-or-death situation, but it is the life or death of a sale, a quota, a company, your family’s support, and your dream. [19:57] When you’re truly afraid of death or loss, that brings out doubt, which destroys a warrior spirit. Turn that doubt into confidence and courage. That’s what peak performers do. On the opposite side of fear is growth. [24:44] When you focus on serving someone, and being present for them, you leap past your fear into productive action. [28:28] It all begins with you as a leader. Look at yourself in the mirror and consider your goals and core values. Tap into your core, and hire for it. Create an environment where it’s safe to tactfully call out problems. [34:21] The biggest challenge in business today is people are afraid to go to each other for help. They’re afraid to show vulnerability — a lot of times, because their leaders are demanding instead of commanding.   Quotable Quotes "You can’t see your most vulnerable position in combat, which is behind you." “Trust takes time. It starts with core values, mutual respect, integrity — and it takes effort. ” “You need to be experiencing it under the gun — that’s where the learning happens.” “Passion trumps fear. Your passion’s got to be greater than the fear.” ‘There’s no greater impact that you can have on folks who are needing you, than your time.”     Books Mentioned on the Show Never Fly Solo: Lead with Courage, Build Trusting Partnerships, and Reach New Heights in Business, by Robert "Waldo" Waldman   Bio Waldo is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and holds an MBA with a focus on organizational behavior. He is an inductee into the Professional Speaker Hall of Fame, and has many more credentials. He founded The Wingman Foundation to build funds and awareness for soldiers, veterans, airmen and their families. Waldo believes that the key to building a culture of trust lies with your wingmen — the men and women in your life who help you overcome obstacles, adapt to change, and achieve success. Through compelling real-world stories, Lt. Col. Rob "Waldo" Waldman relates how his Air Force wingmen helped him overcome challenges and become successful by teaching him lessons that work in an office as well as in a cockpit. In and of itself, the above excerpt would provide a more than compelling reason to buy Lt. Col. Waldman's book Never Fly Solo.  Especially given the fact that the first accolade for his book was from the Pit Bull of Personal Development himself Larry Winget.  Larry, who has you already know, has been a guest on my show several times tells it like it is, so if he likes it - it has to be good! However, and beyond the above, I actually had the opportunity to not only hear Rob speak at the recent Virginia 2014 Forum, I had the privilege to meet him in person and share some time over lunch. While I was obviously impressed with the purpose and integrity of his message, it was the accessibility to his personal story that resonated most. Joining me today to talk about why it is important to never fly solo is Lt. Col. Rob "Waldo" Waldman. Be sure to visit the http://www.yourwingman.com/ website.
