From December 21 through 26, 2022, an historic extratropical bomb cyclone brought blizzard conditions and winter storms to much of Canada and the United States, killing at least 71 people and cancelling or delaying more than 10,000 flights during the busy Christmas travel season. The storm was unofficially named Winter Storm Elliott by The Weather Channel. Meanwhile, a separate storm moved into the Pacific Northwest on December 23. The storm knocked out power for more than 30,000 people in Washington State and Oregon. In Storm Elliott, northwestern Michigan got nearly 43 inches of snow. Buffalo, New York's 37.5 hours of blizzard conditions was the longest blizzard in the city's history. As the storm began to exit the United States, it brought the fourth highest high tide on record to Portland, Maine. At Portland Head Light in Maine, one of the most visited lighthouses in the world, damage included a window smashed on the keeper's house, and a door broken in on the lighthouse tower entryway. At Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse on the New Hampshire Seacoast, the 80-foot walkway that led out to the lighthouse was largely destroyed. Meanwhile, the headquarters of the U.S. Lighthouse Society at the Point No Point Light Station in Washington state was closed due to flooding. International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, or ILLW, is an annual event held on the third full weekend of August each year. The event was the brainchild of John Forsyth and Mike Dalrymple who were members of the Ayr Amateur Radio Group in Scotland. The event started in 1998 and has developed into an international gathering of amateur radio operators from an estimated 95 countries. In Britain the Association of Lighthouse Keepers, or ALK, conducts International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend on the same weekend as the ILLW in August. The ILLW is currently managed by an Australian amateur radio operator, Kevin Mulcahy, who has been involved since 1998. On August 20 of this year, two amateur radio operators broadcast from Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse on the New Hampshire Seacoast, Randall Bashta and Patrick Morrison. Seacoast Mental Health Center was founded in 1963 to address the mental health care needs of the New Hampshire Seacoast, Seacoast Mental Health Center (SMHC) is one of ten non-profit state-designated community mental health centers (CMHCs) in New Hampshire. As a CMHC, they provide evaluations and treatment services to children, adolescents and families, adults, and the elderly who reside in their catchment area regardless of their ability to pay. They accept most major insurances and offer a sliding fee scale for uninsured consumers living in the eastern half of Rockingham County. The mission of Seacoast Mental Health Center is to provide a broad, comprehensive array of high quality, effective and accessible mental health services to residents of the eastern half of Rockingham County.

Neil Hargreaves Listen to the podcast with this player: Neil Hargreaves was a light keeper for Trinity House in England from 1974-1988, and he is the founder and chairman of the Association of Lighthouse Keepers. Neil, who was originally from Lancashire, spent the first two years of his light keeping career on light vessels, mostly the Newarp lightship off the Norfolk coast in southwest England. Neil's first appointment as an assistant lighthouse keeper was at the Smalls Lighthouse, a wave-swept granite tower on a rock about 20 miles off the coast of Pembrokeshire. After two years at the Smalls station, he spent seven years on the Inner Dowsing tower – a converted coal rig – in the North Sea off England's east coast. Neil's final three years working for Trinity House were spent traveling around to various light stations in England, Wales, and the Channel Islands. He spent time at Longships, Souter, Wolf Rock, and several other stations. His last station as a keeper was Portland Bill on the Dorset coast. Neil founded the Association of Lighthouse Keepers, or ALK, in 1988, and he serves as its chairman. The ALK manages a lighthouse museum on the south coast of England. The group also runs lighthouse tours and produces a quarterly journal called Lamp. * * * * Lighthouses are seen around the world as a symbol of hope, guidance, and strength along with lots of other positive qualities. The playwright George Bernard Shaw once wrote, “I can think of no other edifice constructed by man as altruistic as a lighthouse. They are built only to serve.” In recognition of that, Light Hearted will be doing occasional segments called “Be a Lighthouse,” discussing people and organizations who are being lighthouses, or beacons of hope, in our communities. The first “Be a Lighthouse” segment focuses on a nonprofit organization on the New Hampshire Seacoast. Gather serves those in the community experiencing hunger by providing nutritious food through innovative distribution programs. The organization also collaborates with community partners to address the root causes of hunger throughout the Seacoast in New Hampshire and Maine. JEREMY I'm speaking today with Neil Hargreaves, who is a former lighthouse keeper in England and also the founder of the Association of Lighthouse Keepers. You know, I was reading some interviews with you lately. And in one of the interviews, you talked about how you worked on fishing trawlers before you became a lighthouse keeper. I'm sure that was an interesting job that could probably be pretty scary at times. NEIL HARGREAVES Yeah. It was a dangerous job. I sailed out of Fleetwood and then I ended up on deep sea in the Faroes in Iceland. That was a beautiful sight to see when I first saw Iceland, and these white mountains rising sheer out of the sea with pink tints on the top. Absolutely magical. But, unfortunately, we weren't allowed to land at the time, because it was during the time of the Cod Wars with Iceland. We had the Icelandic gunboats trying to cut our nets away. JEREMY But there must have been some heavy seas you encountered at times. NEIL HARGREAVES Oh, for sure. Yeah. I mean there was one trip, we ended up sailing right around Iceland. The skipper kept sailing north and right to the top to escape the weather. The weather was that bad. There was one sea, the vessel actually keeled over and half the boat deck was underwater. But it was pretty close, I think, that one. I only did it two years before I transferred over to lighthouses. JEREMY You worked on the lightships at first, but what, what exactly led you to work for Trinity House?

The Isles of Shoals are a cluster of nine islands located several miles off the seacoast of New Hampshire and southern Maine. A lighthouse on White Island -- the southernmost of the island group -- went into service in early 1821. It was a stone tower, later encased with wood and shingled. A new 58-foot brick lighthouse tower was built on White Island in 1859, and the new tower was fitted with a second-order Fresnel lens. Over the years that followed, the lighthouse tower developed major cracks in its exterior, mostly on the northeast side that bears the brunt of storms. The good news is that Sue Reynolds, a seventh-grade science teacher at the North Hampton School on the New Hampshire seacoast, started a nonprofit organization called the Lighthouse Kids to save the lighthouse. Andy Robinson is a junior at Palo Alto High School in California, and he's a co-chair for the Teen Advisory Council of the Palo Alto History Museum, where he helped create a historical time capsule of his city. Andy has also been a volunteer for the U.S. Lighthouse Society's passport program, helping to update information on stamp locations and events. He's written histories for a series of collectible passport stamps to commemorate lost lighthouses. Foster’s referring there to the rapid rate of erosion on parts of the island, but he writes that a greater threat to the Vineyard's natural beauty is tourism and development. Yet he says the island's six towns have come up with a way to manage that growth, and can offer an example to other parts of New England. Brand Consciousness The video above is part of a new campaign launched by The Greater Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts to rebrand the region long known as the “Pioneer Valley” as “West Mass.” The video was released in February, and has become the target of social media mockery and an online petition to scrap the new brand. Our guest is Connecticut State Historian Walt Woodward. Before becoming a historian, Woodward worked in advertising from 1970 through 1998, creating place-branding campaigns for cities and states around the country. Woodward talks about the struggles and successes of recent branding campaigns in New England, as well as the New England brand itself, an attempt by colonist John Smith to sell this cold, rocky land to folks back home. NEXT’s home state of Connecticut has had nine different slogans since 1980. Becky Brand, of Brandmoore Farm, joins today's episode of Greenhorns Radio. Becky grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and later attended University of New Hampshire– landing her on the New Hampshire Seacoast. After studying Environmental Horticulture at UNH, she worked in Massachusetts at Appleton Farms and New Hampshire at Meadow’s Mirth where she continued to learn about organic and sustainable farming practices.
