Today we're going to talk about a logistics company that started out of a second hand van a decade ago. Founded in 2014 by a group of three friends, our guest is e-commerce express logistics company Ninja Van Group. Fast forward to the present, the firm is now a technology enabled logistics organisation backed by marquee investors including GeoPost, Alibaba, and B Capital Group. Just to give you a sense of the firm's scale, Ninja Van said it has a 100% coverage across Southeast Asia, with established operations and networks in six key markets. It offers logistics and supply chain products and services for nearly two million shippers, with some two million parcels delivered by its team of over 66,000 people daily. Ninja Van is a company that we want to look at because the firm had in April 2024 launched a cold chain offering called Ninja Cold, as well as a business-to-business offering Ninja B2B, as part of efforts to diversify beyond e-commerce and search for higher margin businesses. The move come as the firm's latest financial filings for the financial year ended June 2023 revealed a loss of S$326.8 million in 2023 versus a loss of S$250.2 million in 2022. So how does the firm assess its latest financial numbers? What does this say about the opportunities and challenges in operating and expanding within the logistics space? And how successful has Ninja Cold and Ninja B2B been over half a year after they were launched? On Under the Radar, Money Matters' finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Lai Chang Wen, CEO, Ninja Van.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Preparing for unexpected fatherhood was the beginning of Eric’s parenthood journey, as the career-oriented product manager shares how he had to pivot from a mindset focused on himself, to the life of an actively involved husband and father. Eric talks about how he balances his zeal for career growth with a passion for parenting and supporting his wife. He highlights the importance of setting boundaries to create time for his family, share the workload, and instill good behavior in his growing daughter. In doing this, Eric encourages other dads to take small steps towards being an engaged parent. Eric is the Director of Product Management at Ninja Van, with over a decade of experience in Product Management. Born and raised in Malaysia, he is an active parent of a 5-year old girl and he believes in using technology to enable people to do great things. Although having a kid was unexpected, Eric is grateful for his daughter who has been a blessing and brought a new perspective. Sharing the strategies he used to adapt to family life, Eric notes the challenges as well as tools from work to interact better at home and vice versa. The value of patience was one of these as Eric discusses the “terrible 2s” and his views on punishment. In all of this, rest is critical; "The first advice I would give to new parents is first to give yourself a break, you don't have to get everything 100% right the first time”. Setting boundaries is another tool he uses to foster balance at work and at home. Lastly, Eric advises parents to keep up with technology trends to protect their families. Bukit Batok Ghosts with Panji (Haunted Hour S2E7) Formerly a rubber and pineapple plantation, Bukit Batok played a prominent role in the fall of Singapore when the British failed to defend the vicinity during the Battle of Bukit Timah and their subsequent surrender on 15 February 1942 to the Japanese at the Ford Motor Factory in present-day Hillview. At the top of Bukit Batok Nature Reserve, General Yamashita ordered 500 Australian Prisoners to construct the Japanese war memorial, Syonan Chureito shrine. On this week's The Asian Seller podcast, I talk to Felix Law, a Singapore-based e-commerce seller who quit his full-time engineering career and is now focused 100 percent on e-commerce. Just three years ago in early 2018, Felix quit his job because he was unhappy working a 9 to 5, and started exploring entrepreneurship. He started working as a delivery boy for Ninja Van and Amazon Prime Now, which is how he was exposed to e-commerce. The high volume of parcels he was delivering made him realize the potential of selling online. His first product was coffee cups, which didn't really sell well. Even though the product was a failure, it was a learning experience for Felix and helped familiarize him with the process. He also learnt valuable lessons about product research and PPC. The second product was a glass-based item, which had many breakages and he dropped it altogether. The third product he launched on Amazon was more consistent and it's still selling. As of now, Felix is selling on Amazon US and also has three Shopify stores for his various brands. Recently he has been appointed as an Ambassador by the Amazon team in Singapore, and he has been hosting meetups trying to help other local sellers. Felix is currently a 6-figure seller, and aiming for 7 figures this year. Episode Highlights How and why Felix quit his R and D and engineering job to focus on e-commerce How Jason Tay's course helped Felix get started His first few products, why they failed, how much he invested and lessons learnt About Felix's brands and which marketplaces he sells on The process of launching new products Mistakes he made when starting out Which aspect of the business does he find most challenging and which is his favorite How Felix does influencer marketing on social media How does he deal with cash flow Being an entrepreneur can get lonely.
