543 BC, Lord Buddha had left the earth, and his body was cremated in a sandalwood pyre at Kushinagar, in modern-day Uttar Pradesh. His left canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre by his disciple, Khema. Over the decades, it changed hands and found itself in Kandy, Sri Lanka. So important was this tooth, that palaces were built around it. And thus began a tradition of ritual offerings at these palaces. This week, we travel to Sri Lanka and uncover how Buddhism shaped the food of the country, and how its principles are incorporated into everyday Sri Lankan food practice. One of the things I enjoy most about being a trial lawyer is that to do it effectively you have to construct a narrative. The clear-cut facts are the constants, they can't be polished over with a story, or at least they shouldn't. And the variables? Well, that's where narrative steps in. So as odd as it may sound, in a lot of ways the great lawyers of history have more in common with great mathematicians. Both were tasked with the deceptively difficult task of reconciling the known with the unknown. Of course, this kind of problem solving is required for almost any knowledge-based job, but only a select few careers rest on one's ability to think and then justify that thinking. Now, narratives have been proven to be one of the most effective ways to convey information and I'm sure there are plenty of scientific reasons behind this. But in a more esoteric sense, I believe a well-crafted narrative is a sign that the narrator has thought deeply about the situation. But another profession that I think screams as a job that requires the parsing of information to build a complete narrative is think-tank fellow. They work exclusively with variables because their constants are never truly constant. To do this kind of work takes a brilliant mind, but luckily enough, I was able to get one on the show. Akshobh Giridharadas is a Visiting Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), which is consistently rated as one of the top think-tanks in the world.Akshobh has been a broadcast and print journalist for ESPN and Channel NewsAsia, and has taken his knowledge into the consulting sector including work for the World Bank. He continues to write on diverse topics such as geopolitics, business, and technology and has published articles for multiple outlets including The Diplomat, MoneyControl, and The Quint.A two time TEDx Speaker and holds two master's degrees: one in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a second in journalism from Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication in Pune, India. And finally, Akshob is the co-host of a new Podcast series titled The Global Detail Podcast (GDP) with Brandon Duke which goes beyond borders and headlines and seeks to interview an eclectic mix of experts with powerful stories about their geopolitical experiences. It's a deep conversation and I hope you can join it. Enjoy the show!

Hingga mereka dibentuk menjadi radikal, baik fisik maupun pemikirannya. Politicon: How The Heck Are We Gonna Get Along with Clay Aiken
Clay is joined by journalist, businessman, and author Richard Lui to discuss the state of the nation in 2021 and how we can begin to come together as one people. Is apolitical selfishness or making the effort to reach out and sit down to talk with those who disagree with us the answer? It’s a difficult question, but with small steps, intention and good will, we might be able to take the advice of Richard and find the way forward for us, our communities, and our country-- no matter which side of the aisle we're on. What do you think?Guest:Richard Lui Richard Lui is a thought leader at the intersection of media, social impact, and storytelling. He is a content and digital-social specialist with 30 years of experience in network television, technology, and business.Currently, he is a journalist and news anchor for MSNBC and NBC News. Before that, he was news anchor at CNN Worldwide, where he became the first Asian American male to anchor a daily national news broadcast in the U.S. Most recently, Lui reported on the ground on the Paris and San Bernardino Terror Attacks and in Ferguson and Baltimore during heightened racial unrest. For 15 years Lui’s reporting has focused on politics, covering every U.S. national election since 2004. He has interviewed hundreds of politicians, from Detroit Mayor to U.S. President. He has been a contributing columnist for USA Today, Politico, Seattle Times, Detroit Free Press, Huffington Post, and others. Lui is a Policy Fellow at UC Riverside.Lui’s passion for politics started in the 70s, when he debated California’s controversial Proposition 13 on bus rides to school. His interest turned into a job at the age of 19: campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong. After the election, Lui returned to college. His plan was to write on policy and the affairs of state, subscribing to the Washington Post when it had to be mailed to the west coast. In the 1990s, Lui reported for news radio KALX during a unique time in California politics. Two of his first stories as a journalist were Dianne Feinstein’s first successful U.S. Senate campaign and the Rodney King verdict and riots.Later in the 2000s, Lui reported from Asia during an increasingly heated political climate. Two Muslim countries in Southeast Asia transformed: Indonesia’s Sukarno family was defeated after rule spanning over half a century; and Malaysia’s prime minister, after almost a quarter of a century handed over power. Lui also reported on Taiwan’s controversial election between pro- and anti- China political parties. He was at Channel NewsAsia, an English-only news network in 20 countries and territories.Lui is also a technologist with a wide-reaching business career that started in the 1990s. He launched six technology brands over three technology cycles, most recently an artificial intelligence company in Silicon Valley in 2016. While at Citibank Singapore, he co-founded and patented a Visa-like payments backbone (a first of its kind) and was a management consultant at Mercer for an IBM joint venture. He sits on six boards of directors / advisers in spaces ranging from international relations to artificial intelligence. He is a 2016 Governance Fellow for the National Association of Corporate Directors.Lui’s accolades and achievements include the top tiers of business, political and journalism distinctions. In addition to being a team Emmy and team Peabody recipient, he has been recognized for his reporting from national organizations including the National Education Association, Advancing Justice, AAJA, NAAAP 100 and WWAAC. He is ranked globally in the top 1% of social media users by Twitter Counter. Business Insider named Lui one of 21 careers to watch alongside Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg. And more lightheartedly, he’s been ranked three years in a row by Mediaite as one of the “50 Sexiest in TV News.”Lui is a Policy Fellow at the University of California Riverside where he explores the cross of public policy and media, UN Spokesperson for the HeForShe Campaign, one of 100 US State Department Traveling Speakers, and ambassador for NGOs focusing on gender equality and human trafficking.Lui graduated from City College of San Francisco with A.S. Honors in Math and Science, UC Berkeley with a B.A. Honors Rhetoric, and the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan with an MBA. To be woke and to cancel involve a heightened awareness of social injustice and the calling out of offending institutions or powerful people — like the Me Too movement which brought down Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. Largely attributed to today’s youth who are less afraid to challenge institutionalised norms, they level the playing field when it comes to justice. But they can also lead to polarisation. In this debut episode, host and Institute of Policy Studies Deputy Director Ong Soh Chin chats with Lydia Lim, head of Schools and Education Projects at Singapore Press Holdings, and poet and writer Theophilus Kwek about the complexities of this new form of activism, whether being woke is exclusively for the young and how to take it to a better place for Singapore. Find out more about cancel culture: The Straits Times (20 September 2020): Asking awkward questions of the powerful Mothership (5 August 2020): Cancelling & cancel culture: Are they relevant to us in S’pore & why should we care? “Homelessness exists in Singapore.” That’s the first thing that Senior Research Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Dr Ng Kok Hoe told me when we had a chance to discuss the topic. And it’s true. They are just less visible. It’s often difficult to distinguish a homeless person from any other member of the public, for a variety of reasons that we’ll get into. Dr Ng and his team issued a first of its kind report, “Homeless in Singapore: Results from a Nationwide Street Count,” in November of 2019. They estimated there were between 921 and 1,050 street homeless people in Singapore. Since then, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has become a global problem. Singapore announced a stringent set of measures, called a “circuit breaker” on April 7th, 2020, designed to curb the spread of the virus. Singaporeans are urged to stay indoors whenever possible and access to public spaces are tightly controlled. This has complicated the homeless situation, as rough sleepers are urged to move to shelters that are struggling to cope with the situation. And as Dr Ng pointed out in a recent interview on Channel NewsAsia, many of Singapore’s homeless people have low-wage jobs in the retail and services industries, which have been some of the hardest hit by the pandemic. This conversation was recorded on 15 October 2019:

Yukon Huang thinks that China’s economy is extremely unconventional. Unsurprisingly, then, that nearly all the conventional economic wisdom we hear about this economy — particularly the two hugely popular poles of opinion that treat it as either an unstoppable force or a crisis-in-waiting — is wrong. So goes the contrarian take of the former World Bank Director for China and Russia, who is now Senior Fellow in the Asia Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Huang detailed his thoughts on China’s economy is his most recent book, Cracking the China Conundrum: Why Conventional Economic Wisdom Is Wrong. http://supchina.com/2017/10/24/cracking-the-china-conundrum-makes-bold-claims/ He sat down with Jeremy and Kaiser at SupChina’s NEXT CHINA Conference on January 17, and in this live podcast, answered provocative questions and defended surprising statements: "Why is it that people think China's unbalanced growth is a risk, when it actually is a positive development?" "Why do people think [China] has a debt problem, when actually it's a sign of financial deepening?" "Why is it that corruption is seen as an impediment to growth, when in China actually it's been a booster to growth?" "We assume that the more innovative you are as a country, the faster you grow, when actually it's the opposite." Recommendations: Jeremy: The China Questions: Critical Insights into a Rising Power, a fantastic collection of essays by scholars at Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, edited by Jennifer Rudolph and Michael Szonyi. And radiooooo.com, a site you should definitely check out if you are a music lover. Yukon: The recent movie Hidden Figures, about black women mathematicians who worked for NASA in the 1960s. Kaiser: A two-part documentary on Channel NewsAsia called China on Film, a collection of the earliest footage ever shot in China, dating back to the last years of the Qing Dynasty.
