What are trauma tingles, you ask? Oh, you know them. They're those wild, exciting, tantalizing, and misdirecting feelings that magnetize you into the same shitty relational dynamics you've been dealing with your whole life.Oof, It's wild out there in the complex realm of relationships. Sometimes we find ourselves more interested in the chase than the embrace or confusing intensity for intimacy- all the while declaring that we want and need love. If red flags feel like home and you find yourself or people you know in the merry-go-round of relationship pains, welcome to the world of trauma tingles... Let's talk about it.In this episode, Dr. Scott Lyons chats with Kai Cheng Thom and Nkem Ndefo about red flags in dating and why trauma tingles feel irresistible. If an ordinary life feels risky and red flags cause a buzz of excitement, don't worry—this is a normal part of being human and an adaptive response to trauma. Through witnessing patterns unfolding and learning how to form safer boundaries for ourselves and others, we can heal to the point that those trauma tingles become boring and unsexy- red flag couture no more!Topics we break down:How trauma tingles relate to your attachment style. Why dating apps can be dehumanizing.Communicating your needs.Reconfiguring relationships.Maintaining boundaries.Choosing yourself.Kai Cheng's work focuses on the intersection of social justice, pleasure activism, and transformative approaches to healing conflict.Connect with Kai ChengWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | TwitterArise EmbodimentNkem is the founder of Lumos Transforms and the creator of the Resilience Toolkit.Connect with NkemWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | TwitterThe Resilience ToolkitConnect with Dr. ScottWebsite | Instagram | TikTokAddicted to DramaSave 10% at OMALA with offer code DRSCOTT10Save 10% on The Embody Lab with offer code GENTLYUSED10Want to see the Rorschach Drawings? What an honor to speak with Nkem Ndefo today!  I wanted to post this right away, because we are speaking about the election, and Nkem was very helpful in helping me take a step back and see a bigger picture of the election. I found it very profound when Nkem spoke about their vision for liberation of all. Their organization's vision is: "rooted in justice and flourishing in joy."  We spoke about the important question we can ask ourselves "where is my political home?" As we spoke about politics and healing, our conversation turned to how we all play roles (or could have a role) in social change. Here was a beautiful intersection with IFS! Nkem spoke about some of the ways that they have helped facilitate change on large scales within hospitals, and also schools!  To find out more about Nkem, you can go to: www.lumostransforms.com I hope this episode can bring you a little peace and hope.

My guest this week is someone who is both right at the edge of the emerging futures and in a position to exert leverage at some of the highest points of the scale at which change happens. Sophia Parker is the Emerging Futures Director at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a philanthropic organisation with a long history of progressive work, aiming for social and cultural equity.  It is still committed to the research that sheds new light onto the nature and scale of poverty and injustice in the UK. It is still advocating for change and supporting the people who are making it happen - but newly it is supporting those who are at the leading edge of paradigm shift, exploring all the myriad ways we could break out of late stage capitalism and towards that more flourishing future our hearts know is possible. And there are so many ways - one of the many things I took on board from this conversation was the number of people and organisations around the world who are working in and expanding the radical spaces we've touched on recently with Indy Johar and then Alnoor Ladha and Lynn Murphy.  In her role as the Director of the Emerging Futures Programme, Sophia is working at the heart of the change, connecting ideas, exploring how best to support them in ways that will grow us forward and not just keep propping up the old system and the old narratives.  She's delving deeply into ways to change the narrative, the levels at which that happens, where are the tipping points in our culture and how do we support and entire ecosystem of transformation.  Near the top of the hour, we talked about hope and truly, I came away from this conversation a lot more hopeful than when we started. Bio:Sophia Parker was CEO of Little Village, the London-based charity she founded in 2016 that works to tackle child poverty. Now, she is the Emerging Futures Director at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a philanthropic organisation with a long history of progressive work, aiming for social equity. The Emerging Futures programme was set up to imagine and grow radical new approaches to tackling poverty, in collaboration with partners and people with lived experience of poverty.Previously she has held senior leadership positions in think tanks and charities, as well as working in government locally and nationally, and was a Research Associate at Harvard's Kennedy School). The final Episode of Season 9, a season on mental health, embodiment, and in this episode we throw in change and some DEI (diversity equity and inclusion) as well. Recorded on Treaty 7 territory in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Change is hard, and harder still when it involves institutions filled with individuals who don't want to change. In this eye-opening and juicy conversation, Nkem Ndefo, founder of Lumos Transforms, joins Rohadi to discuss the pathways to embodying change. Change for both the self, and for organizations looking to become more equitable and inclusive spaces for all to work and thrive. I think in some ways it resilience has been weaponized. And as I've been teaching and working with people over the many years, I've seen a lot of people recoil from the word because it's been weaponized against folks in a very neoliberal context, in that we don't acknowledge the system's culpability in creating conditions of adversity. Instead, we look only at the individual and that unit, and we say that the individual must be more resilient, you must be strong, flexible to endure, whatever is going on, and that any resilience you build will then be extracted from you for greater production and consumption. - Nkem Episode Summary Intro to this episode. 0:00 Introduction to the show. 3:11 Reciprocity and collaboration in leading organizational and individual change. 8:24 The difficulty of existing in the liminal spaces that need to change. 15:08 The way resiliency has been weaponized and how to reclaim it. 21:25 The importance of naming systemic problems. 30:55 How do we bring awareness to embodiment? 37:14 How do we build resilience in the face of privilege and fragility? 43:43 About Nkem: Nkem Ndefo, MSN, CNM, RN, is the founder of Lumos Transforms and creator of The Resilience Toolkit. ScottWebsite | Instagram | TikTokAddicted to DramaSave 10% at OMALA with offer code DRSCOTT10Save 10% on The Embody Lab with offer code

If you're like me, it helps to hear what something looks like in practice over just reading questions on a page.  In this bonus episode the Licensed Mental Health Counselor Kathleen Joseph shares one of her favorite exercises to do with clients to relieve stress and build resilience.  You can see the activity below, but if you want to know what it sounds like in practice (and how stressed I am right now!), Kathleen asked me the questions and guided me through it in this episode. The Resilience Toolkit by Nkem Ndefo - https://theresiliencetoolkit.co/ - there is a fee associated with doing this with Nkem. This is an adaptation Nkem Ndefo’s Resilience Toolkit  First, ask yourself “How stressed am I?” – this gets at how strong the stress response is  You can rank this on a scale of 1-10 or low to high (we will come back to ranking)  Then ask yourself, “How do I know?”. How do you know you are a “7 out of 10” or “highly” stressed, for example  This is an important question because this gives us   1) insight into our experience, and   2) a better way of understanding our experience  Now, ask yourself, “Is this adaptive for me in this moment?” (“Is this useful for me right now?)  If yes – GOOD! Use it and keep going  If no –   Ask yourself this question: “What do I need?”  “What practice(s) can I use?”  Exercise, or taking a walk Finally, ask yourself: “How do I know that the practice worked?” If the practice works at reducing your feelings of stress, or at helping you to notice how stressed you are, keep practicing it.

Nkem Ndefo is on with us today, teaching, informing, shedding light on how to think realistically, holistically about stress. This is totally necessary to understand for pregnancy and postpartum...but also for pretty much everything. Nkem is teaching us about how our bodies and minds respond to stress and ways to build resilience. There are too many gems in this episode to quote, you'll just have to soak this up when you listen. Here are some of the things Nkem discusses with us. * Understanding how a "disorder" may actually be an "adaptive response" to stress. * "What can we build up, what's good, what's working"... "How do we build on that and help build out the strengths?" * "We do grow, we do get stronger, but it has to be within our window of tolerance, if it's outside of our window of tolerance its too much, it doesn't cause us to grow, it causes us to break" * "What are the systemic factors [of stress] and what are the individual factors...one of the most damaging things we say to people is to hold them responsible for systemic factors" * High stress in pregnancy and how that affects the mother and baby. * Ways to support regulating the body-mind system in a supportive way, by being a partner in care.
