In 1980, the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team became memorable underdogs -- securing a shocking, yet symbolic win against the Soviets that has since been remembered as "The Miracle on Ice." Now, 45 years later, lawmakers are working together to find a way to give those hockey players the recognition they deserve. Congressman Pete Stauber (R-MN) and Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) discuss the significance of that Olympic hockey game, what it meant for Americans, and why they felt called to create the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the Founder & Director of N-Stinctive, Rosie Tomkins.Rosie is not only the author of the insightful book "Instinctive: The Power of Natural Intelligence" but also the founder of Instinctive and the mind behind the new book "Let Nature Be Your Compass."Rosie illuminated the concept of natural intelligence and its critical role in decision-making. Unlike the more commonly known forms of intelligence such as IQ (Intellectual Quotient) and EQ (Emotional Quotient), NQ taps into our innate ability to perceive, instinctively understand, and act swiftly from a place of deep knowing. Rosie's work positions NQ as a complementary form of intelligence that enhances our traditional cognitive abilities and emotional understanding.Rosie passionately spoke about the foundational elements of leadership that are often overlooked. She stressed the importance of self-leadership, which involves having faith in one's judgment and the confidence to make decisions, particularly during challenging times. She also touched on the concept of energetic transfer and how leaders can influence their environment through their energy. The conversation highlighted the significance of connection, courage, and ownership in cultivating leadership qualities. One of the profound insights Rosie shared was the value of internal validation over external approval. She believes that true leadership comes from within and that seeking validation from others can detract from one's ability to lead authentically.Key Points from the Episode:Introduction to Rosie Tomkins and her work in natural intelligence and leadership developmentExplanation of natural intelligence (NQ) and its role in decision-makingImportance of self-leadership, energetic transfer, connection, courage, and ownership in leadership developmentDifferentiation between natural intelligence and emotional and spiritual intelligenceApplication of natural intelligence in real-life situationsConsequences of not embracing natural intelligence in leadershipInsights from Rosie's new book, "Let Nature Be Your Compass"Tactical and actionable advice for listeners to employ natural intelligence in their livesEmphasis on observing and learning from nature for resilience and challenging human thinkingAbout Rosie Tomkins:Rosie Tomkins is an acclaimed Executive and Leadership Coach, author, and advocate for integrating nature's wisdom into business leadership. We continue here on flexxCOACH's "Inside the Game" with Craig Patrick. In this segment we discuss in depth the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team and what went into the success of the team with Herb Brooks. Craig talks of how Herb Brooks coached the team and was very prepared for how he coached the team. There was a mission for Herb, he had a plan from May 1979 when Craig was brought in as an assistant coach for the team and how he put that plan into action. They were prepared mentally and physical for the Pre Olympic tour as well the games themselves. Everything Herb did was part of bigger picture in what was to come. Craig even showed us his gold medal from the games. It is towards the end of the interview. We transition at the end of the interview with his time in the NHL and being the General Manager of the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins and winning the Stanley Cup twice in Pittsburgh. Legendary sportswriter E.M. Swift spent over thirty years writing for Sports Illustrated with a specialty in covering the Olympics. It was his coverage of the 1980 gold medal winning USA Olympic hockey team that cemented them and their against-all-odds victory as one of the greatest miracles in sports history. In segment five Lou talks about his getting the head coaching job for the 1984 Olympic Hockey Team. The one thing he breaks down is how 1980 hurt 1984 because it opened the gates for American hockey players to play in the NHL. He discusses about the players who should have been on the team but went to the NHL. He had players on the team who could have played in the World Juniors but played in the Olympics and were only 17 years of age. The team did not do well and felt he let USA Hockey down with the showing at the games. After the Olympics Lou took the assistant coaching position with the New Jersey Devils for two years. Was a great experience and he said it was great to take his knowledge and see what NHL level players could do with it.

In segment one we visit with Bill Guerin and his beginnings in hockey in Springfield MA. His mom was looking for some activity to get him involved with since he was very active. He was only three years old and his passion was instant when he started skating. Fell in love with playing hockey in the house leagues when he was six years old. Bill developed great friendships when he was playing on his first travel team at 10 years old. As he moved up in hockey he made the Springfield Olympics and the coach Gary Dineen changed his life. He played four years for the "Pic's" and it changed his life and his hockey life. They played prep schools and JV teams in colleges. Was getting a lot of interested from schools. He was even drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in the OHL. Gary Dineen told him the best route for him was college because he needed a back up plan if hockey didn't work and that is why he chose Boston College. He was also drafted 5th overall in the NHL by the New Jersey Devils. The first major disappointment in his career is when he cut from the 1992 Olympic Hockey Team.

One of my favorite movie quotes is from a film called Miracle. If you've seen that movie, you know it's about the 1980 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey Team, a team that was comprised of a bunch of college-age boys who were given no chance as they entered Lake Placid, NY in the Olympics. They ended up stunning the world by taking gold. The scene that's my favorite scene is the night when the U.S. is getting ready to play the Soviets. The U.S. coach, Herb Brooks, who's played by Kurt Russell, gives what I consider the greatest pre-game speech. He says this, “Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played them 10 times, they'd probably win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them because we can, and we shut them down. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world.”He goes on, but as I've seen that clip probably about 50 times I am always impressed with the influence that a great coach can have on their teams. In my opinion, great coaches know their players. They know their weaknesses, they know their strengths. Great coaches know how to cast vision, and great coaches get their players to accomplish things that maybe they never even dreamt of.I find there are a lot of similarities when it comes to coaching as there are when it comes to financial advising. Those same traits, I believe great financial advisors know their clients, and they know their clients by how they ask questions. And maybe more importantly how they listen to those answers. Great financial advisors know how to cast vision. They know how to come alongside their clients and help them accomplish their dreams and goals. So, in this brief Bench Talk, I want to leave you with three questions to ponder. As it pertains to your financial plan, number one, what's your vision? Two, what are your dreams? And thirdly, have you shared that with anyone? I'm absolutely convinced, whether it's in the athletic arena or the financial planning arena, a great coach can make all the difference.

Cole's coaching history includes people from all walks of life and abilities, and he has also been a strength coach for Team Canada Women's National Volleyball Team, National Boxing Team members, Pro boxers, Olympic Hockey Team members, NHL and WHA Pro Team Champions, Manitoba Rugby Union, University of Winnipeg Women's Volleyball Team, University of Manitoba Women's Basketball team, and University of Manitoba track. He is based in Winnipeg, Canada. Since 2005 Cole has been been guided and supported by world famous Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale. Mauro is a scientific genius, MD, and author. He is a former World Champion, North American, many times Canadian National Champion Powerlifter. I follow and highly recommend Dr. Di Pasquale's books "Metabolic Diet", "Anabolic Solutions", and "Radical Diet". His guidance was and continues to be life changing for me and many champion athletes and ordinary folk. I am personally very fortunate and grateful to have met Cole in person. He was the Team Leader for my team during my StrongFirst SFG I and he had a tremendous impact on me and how I carry myself as a professional. Here is what you will learn in this episode: Cole's family lineage and coming from a long line of hockey players Sociological and Cultural changes from the 1970's to present day for men and women Teaching women's self-defense beginning in the 1970's Training high school athletes - what's the starting point for them? Enjoy! "Many of the StrongFirst Leadership, Masters, Seniors and Team Leaders are highly qualified and internationally respected martial arts instructors. These are people I hold in high esteem. I am honoured to call them my friends and I highly recommend people learn from them. For example, I spent several summers assisting at John Engum’s martial arts survival camp in Detroit Lakes, MN. StrongFirst Leadership Instructors there included Dr. Ricardo Nieves and Dr. Prentiss Rhodes. I was fortunate to take 2 of Peter Lakatos’ Krav Maga seminars at John Engum’s Academy of Taekwondo in Brainerd, MN. This past May, I trained in Prague with Pavel Macek of KB5 and Practical Hung Kyun. I’ve attended StrongFirst Certifications at Steve Milles’ Five Points Academy in New York City. I got to witness great fighters training and coaching there. I recommend any books from StrongFirst and they can be found here. My favorite exercises are the overhead press and the front lever. The first time I remember pressing a barbell overhead was in Mahtomedi, MN when I was 13 years old. Over the decades that followed I barbell pressed in my basement, at the lake, and in various gyms. I also enjoyed one arm pressing a 70-100 lb dumbbell overhead while standing on a small cliff overlooking the beautiful lake in NW Ontario where the family cabins are located. I purchased many kettlebells for my school and home after Pavel reintroduced kettlebells to the west in 2001. The overhead kettlebell press quickly became my lift of choice. It is also for many, like myself, the most shoulder friendly of the three. The front lever is meditative for me as I mentioned. However, in my experience, the exercise that gives the most bang for the buck...by far... is the kettlebell swing! I regularly use it with people of all ages and backgrounds...high school kids, doctors, nurses, athletic therapists, chiropractors, lawyers, engineers, police officers, musicians, singers, martial artists, hockey, basketball, volleyball, football players and more. After a winter (or several years) of training with me, which includes thousands of swings, my rugby players, male and female, are far quicker and they can repeat this quickness again and again. This is noticeable by everyone at the rugby park and especially their opponents! The other big bang mainstay in my coaching is the get-up. Several of my high school kids including members of our multiple Provincial Champion varsity basketball team(s) could perform get ups with the Beast 48kg kettlebell. I feel this helped them in many ways including easily ripping the ball from their opponent when fighting for it overhead."
