Biotechnology is the use of biology in the production of new products, services, and organisms with the aim of improving human health and society. In 2024, the global biotech market was worth $1.68 trillion. By application, the health segment was responsible for just over half of that figure. Not surprising when you think that healthcare focused biotech companies are battling to solve some of our biggest health concerns; turning an ageing society into a longevity society by supporting longer and healthier lives. In this episode of The Next Five, Paul Little, CEO of Vesper Bio discusses frontotemporal dementia and the impact of it on human health and society, the biotech solutions being sort to combat the disease as well as what he describes as a Malthusian crisis around biotech funding. Dr Ann Beliën, Founder and CEO of Rejuvenate Biomed addresses the problems of Sarcopenia as well as the biotech solutions for it and how Biotech companies use creative ways to secure funding. Gianmario Verona, President of Human Technopole, highlights the importance of industry collaboration and how innovation centres can help propel the biotech sector forward.

Longtime friend and member of the extended Roby family, Paul Little, joins Trent and Patrick on “At Home with Roby”. Paul shares details about his time serving in the United States Marine Corps starting in 1986, the effects that his time as a Marine and Drill Instructor had on his marriage, his post military life in Charlotte working in the technology industry, and the undeniable call he received from God that led him back to the military. About five years ago we started talking about how school pools where being closed. 165 school pools had closed in the previous five years and more were at risk of closing due of health and safety or maintenance costs. The big losers were, of course, the kids. We want our children to know how to be safe around water, especially with our drowning figures. But with schools struggling to build enough classrooms, let alone manage a pool only used for part of the year, it wasn't a surprise to see schools find alternative ways to teach children water safety. Even more appallingly, a recent Listener article in the NZ Herald tells how schools are now sacrificing libraries too. First pools, now libraries – where's the fun in going to school?! So here's the thing, libraries are not mandated. It's up to the school's management and board of trustees to decide whether they have the space and resources for a library, maybe even a librarian, or whether they need that space or budget for something else. It's a fascinating article by Paul Little and I encourage you to read it. In it Little writes “New Zealand has 2,434 state and state integrated schools. The School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa estimates 900 of them do not have a library...”. I found that number confronting. We have plummeting literacy rates, and many schools do not have a library. Apparently, research shows schools that have “libraries with librarians have higher reading test scores, academic achievement and positive attitudes towards learning.” Basically, they do better. I'm not saying a library is the silver bullet to solving our low literacy standards (and not all schools are big enough to justify a library) but libraries do play a part, even if it's just a small corner filled with books and a few bean bags. If you've had a child go through school you will have seen how reading impacts their learning - kids who read tend to flourish. The benefits though are more than that - it's so much more fun being allowed to choose your own book rather than the dry ones you're made to read in class. It's good to get out of the classroom and learn in a different environment. It's a place of sanctuary for many children who need a moment's respite from the chaos of the playground. For many it is the only opportunity to access books, and for others marks the beginning of being a lifelong library user. So as we head into this election, it's excellent to hear all this policy about how we get back to teaching the basics and focusing on reading, writing and maths. Over the next few months we'll see lots of political posturing, positioning, announcements and kneeling for photos with kids. Sometimes, though, the things that help aren't that hard – like money for school libraries so our kids have something to read.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My guest in this episode is Scott Bateman, CEO of property management proptech Kolmeo. Scott's career started in banking, working for BT Financial Group and Bank of Melbourne, before he was convinced to join Little Real Estate, founded by billionaire businessman and philanthropist Paul Little who was managing director of Toll Holdings from 1985 until his retirement in 2011. In this interview, Scott tells us the rather fabulous story of how the legacy technology stack of AgentPlus both pivoted and accelerated to become Kolmeo during the Covid pandemic and lockdowns - a transformation that Scott describes as jumping out of a plane and assembling the parachute. But it took Kolmeo from concept to running some of the largest rent rolls in the country and it's a cracking interview. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theproptechpodcast/message

Fresh off a spring West Coast tour opening for Molly Burch, a couple cool UK festivals, and several very fun music video releases, genre-bending singer-songwriter JayWood is starting an exciting summer. It began with his first-ever appearance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival last weekend -- where he brought his mix of jazz, pop, folk, and funk music to huge hometown crowds -- and then kicks into high gear with the release of a new full-length album, Slingshot, on July 15. Paul Little caught up with JayWood on the final day of the Winnipeg Folk Fest to chat about his festival experience, his successful tour windows when many acts have had to cancel gigs worldwide, writing and recording the new record, and why he made sure it's a complete front-to-back package rather than just a collection of songs. If you're in Winnipeg, you can head to the Tallest Poppy on Thursday, July 14 at 8:00 PM for a Slingshot album listening party. Otherwise, be sure to keep your eyes peeled to JayWood's Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter for upcoming summer tour dates across North America and beyond -- including Manitoba festivals Real Love Summer Fest and Rainbow Trout Music Festival -- as well as a proper album release show sometime in the fall.
Fred Penner has been bringing music to the ears of children worldwide for over 40 years. He's a multiple JUNO Award Winner, a Member of the Order of Canada, and helped teach a generation of Canadians about everything from folk music to curiosity and creativity through his long-running CBC show, Fred Penner's Place. In short and without hyperbole, he's a universally beloved Canadian icon. Now, after a pandemic-enduced touring hiatus, the family entertainer is hitting the road again, including appearances at his hometown Winnipeg International Children's Festival -- a festival he's performed at more than any other. Leading up to the new shows, Paul Little got a chance to speak with Fred over Zoom to talk about his relationship with Winnipeg Kidsfest, his experience working with contemporary Canadian musicians on 2017's Hear the Music, the importance of childhood music education, and why he signed on to highlight Winnipeg musicians through the new TV series Route 90 Sessions.

Unsaved husbands needed to be “won” to Christ! When Peter said “if any obey not the word” he used “if” in a first-class conditional way. He could have used the word “since.” There was nothing “iffy” about these men. None of them obeyed the word. All were unsaved.Verse 7 is packed full of meaning. In context, this verse provides the best practical advice in the Bible for husbands whose wives are unsaved. Peter's advice is that unequally-yoked husbands – Christian men married to unbelieving women – should be model husbands.

In July, The BMJ published an analysis article called “The Antibiotic Course has had it's day” - a provocative title that turned out the garner a lot of debate on our site. The article said that the convention for the length of a course of antibiotics was set by Flemming, in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech - “If you use penicillin, use enough!” - and that the evidence base hasn't moved on since then. The article has had over 40 substantive responses, both agreeing and vehemently not - and so we thought it worth revisiting that argument, now the dust has settled. Discussing that are Martin Llewellyn, professor of infectious disease at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and Paul Little, professor of primary care at the University of Southampton. Last time Julie Tizzard stopped by Happy Hour one of the guys from Flowtribe spilled a glass of red wine all over her. This trip Andrew Duhon re works her marketing plan. Julie is a criminal defense attorney whose phone number is 877 SHARK90. Admitting that it s not the greatest phone number and needs updating Andrew works on various combinations of the number assigning different letters to it and comes up with Julie s new same phone number 877 RIBS 790. Members of the band So Long Storyland are less likely than Flowtribe to spill booze all over Julie as 50 of them are 14 years old. Sophia Preston is still in school after an hour hanging out at Wayfare she has to go home and work on her Shakespeare and geometry homework. Before she does though she and her musical partner Andrew deBuys who a few months back was Sophia s middle school music teacher sing a couple of songs. One song is off their new album, the other is not. See if you can figure out the marketing sense behind that decision after hearing Andrew explain it. Joel Little knows a thing or two about teenage singers. He co wrote and produced the 2014 Grammy winning song of the year, Royals, with teenage artist Lorde. Joel happens to be passing through New Orleans on a music appreciaton tour with his father, acclaimed New Zealand author and publisher Paul Little. For a change, the happy hour conversation swings around to discussing pot, but this time from a different angle from the usual stoner talk. Julie RIBS 970 has an up close and personal association with criminals "not all of them have done something heinous" and has a theory about how legalizing pot could greatly reduce New Orleans crime, but it may also defund the federal government. This is the greatest number of guests to show up ever in the history of Happy Hour. There s a lot to digest. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a series on Power Evangelism, Andy and Glen discuss the ‘power of illustrations':Why do people discuss the illustrations in a sermon more than the theology? How should we use them in evangelism, and what is the Biblical use of them? Can we overuse illustrations?Glen also takes us though some illustrations to help respond to people such as:How do we know Christianity is true?Is the Bible trustworthy? What about Suffering?I wish I had your faithDoesn't free grace lead to sin?How can someone else pay for my sin?Why isn't being good, good enough for God?Are Christians homophobes? Are Christians anti-Science?Glen mentions a book by Paul Little called ‘How to Give Away Your Faith‘.And, of course, get Glen's book 321, the story of God, the World, and You.Support the show
