FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Forget what you see in movies and on TV about serial killers and how they're caught. In this podcast interview we discuss the true realities of investigating these criminals and the crucial role of the FBI. The interview is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and the show's website. A serial killer, or serial murderer, is someone who kills three or more people over a period, driven by psychological gratification. The FBI identifies motives like anger, thrill-seeking, financial gain, and attention-seeking. Serial killers often have specific victim profiles, such as demographic traits or gender. The FBI analyzes these patterns to track down the killers and understand their motives. Though distinct from mass murderers, spree killers, or contract killers, serial killers can share traits with these other types of criminals. FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Listen to this for free in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website or most major podcast platforms. The term "serial killer" is often credited to former FBI special agent Robert Ressler, who used "serial homicide" in a 1974 lecture at the Police Staff College in Bramshill, England. Ann Rule, in her book Kiss Me, Kill Me, credits LAPD detective Pierce Brooks with coining the term and creating the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) system in 1985. Criminologist Ernst Gennat first used the German term Serienmörder ('serial murderer') in 1930 to describe Peter Kürten. Peter Vronsky, in Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters (2004), notes that while Ressler popularized "serial homicide" in 1974, the terms "serial murder" and "serial murderer" appeared earlier in John Brophy's The Meaning of Murder (1966) and a 1967 Washington, D.C. newspaper review. FBI Arresting Serial Killers, From Computer Data to Danger. Our guest, Michael Harrigan, is a retired FBI agent, military veteran, and former police officer from Connecticut. He discusses the FBI's role in investigating serial killers and shares insights from his career, highlighting the differences between police work and FBI operations, from desk work to danger from Quantico to Washington, D.C. We discuss so much that people don't know about the role of the FBI in investigating and Arresting Serial Killers. You can listen to this in Apple Podcasts, our website, Spotify or most major podcast platforms. It was a fridgid Manhattan night in December of 1979, and Peter Vronsky found himself stranded in the city for a few days. Having run out of money, he decided to stay at a seedy hotel on 42nd Street, where he had a strange encounter in the elevator. What happened next haunts him to this day. When he entered the hotel hallway, it was littered with ashes and an  awful odor of  burning chicken feathers. He then discovered that a hideously gruesome scene had taken place in one of the rooms: two women's torsos on burning twin beds, their heads and hands missing. The man on the elevator would later be identified as serial killer Richard Cottingham. Years later a young woman would seek information on her birth mother who turns out to be one of the murdered women in that hotel room. She decided to confront the killer and gather as much information about her mother face to face with a serial killer. ★Enjoy!★★PLEASE SHARE Homicide Inc. with your friends! Like True Crime? His upbringing was the perfect storm for his actions, but something was always a little off within him. In this episode, we dive into his atrocities and along the way, we wish we had never heard his name. Makenna tells us about a band she discovered and Cynthia shares some of her music recommendations, too. Before we jump into Gein's life, we briefly explain the information behind the "rise in serial killers" theory hypothesized by author Peter Vronsky in his book Sons of Cain: a History of Serial Killers From the Stone Age to the Present. Remember in history class when you read about the drunken Irish mob that tried to invade Canada? It gets about half a page in most high-school history textbooks and like so much of the official historical narrative in this country, there's more to the story. In this podcast episode, host Russell Hillier talks to historian and author, Peter Vronsky, about his book Ridgeway: The History of Canada, and gets to the bloody truth about the Fenian invasions.Far from being a drunken mob, the Fenians who invaded Canada in 1866 were hardened veterans of the American Civil War and they bested Upper Canada on the field of battle. Imagine in the year 2020, a thousand American veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, armed with the latest military technology, crossed into Canada. Think of the panic and confusion resulting from such a move. This is precisely what happened in 1866, as 1000 Fenian veterans from the Civil War crossed the Niagara frontier, with the goal of capturing Canada and holding it hostage in exchange for Britain relinquishing control of Ireland. In hindsight, it seems like a crazy proposition and yet, the Fenians did land an army and completely routed the Canadian forces sent against them in the battle of Ridgeway. In this episode, we get into the Fenian strategy, the battle tactics and the reasons why this battle has been largely forgotten by Canadian history.

Your Neighbor, Friend, Even Your Spouse?Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the twentieth century. But such assumptions are far from the truth. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified. Serial killers can be anywhere. And scarier still, they can be anyone.Edited by acclaimed author and anthologist Mitzi Szereto, The Best New True Crime Stories: Serial Killersreveals all-new accounts of true crime serial killers from the contemporary to the historic. Peter Vronsky documents the psychological, investigative, and cultural aspects of serial murder, beginning with its first recorded instance in Ancient Rome through fifteenth-century France on to such notorious contemporary cases as cannibal/necrophile Ed Kemper, the BTK killer, Henry Lee Lucas, Monte Ralph Rissell, Jerry Brudos, Richard Ramirez, “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, and the emergence of what he classifies as the “serial rampage killer” such as Andrew Cunanan, who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace.Vronsky not only offers sound theories on what makes a serial killer but also makes concrete suggestions on how to survive an encounter with one—from recognizing verbal warning signs to physical confrontational resistance. Exhaustively researched with transcripts of interviews with killers, and featuring up-to-date information on the apprehension and conviction of the Green River killer and the Beltway Snipers, Vronsky’s one-of-a-kind book covers every conceivable aspect of an endlessly riveting true crime phenomenon. Before the term was coined in 1981, there were no "serial killers." There were only "monsters"--killers society first understood as werewolves, vampires, ghouls and witches or, later, Hitchcockian psychos. In Sons of Cain--a book that fills the gap between dry academic studies and sensationalized true crime--investigative historian Peter Vronsky examines our understanding of serial killing from its prehistoric anthropological evolutionary dimensions in the pre-civilization era (c. 15,000 BC) to today. Delving further back into human history and deeper into the human psyche than Serial Killers--Vronsky's 2004 book, which has been called the definitive history of serial murder--he focuses strictly on sexual serial killers: thrill killers who engage in murder, rape, torture, cannibalism and necrophilia, as opposed to for-profit serial killers, including hit men, or "political" serial killers, like terrorists or genocidal murderers. These sexual serial killers differ from all other serial killers in their motives and their foundations. They are uniquely human and--as popular culture has demonstrated--uniquely fascinating. Delving further back into human history and deeper into the human psyche than Vronsky’s 2004 book Serial Killers, which has been called the definitive history of serial murder, SONS OF CAIN, examines our understanding of serial killing from its prehistoric anthropological evolutionary dimensions in the pre-civilization era (c. 15,000 BC) to today. However, SONS OF CAIN is not a dry academic history nor a series of encyclopedic entries but a relatable narrative filled with fascinating stories and moments of black humor SONS OF CAIN focuses strictly on sexual serial killers: thrill killers who engage in murder, rape, torture, cannibalism and necrophilia, as opposed to for-profit serial killers, including hit men, or “political” serial killers, like terrorists or genocidal murderers. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

With St. Patrick's Day (March 17) being celebrated this week, In The Past Lane takes a look at some fascinating Irish American history. 1) We start with a feature piece on why Americans in the late 19th century associated Irish immigrants with terrorism. That's right, long before 9/11, the Irish inspired fear among Americans as a dangerous immigrant group that committed acts of terrorism. 2) Next, we present a feature on Hercules Mulligan, the Irish immigrant who served as a trusted spy against the British during the American revolution. You might recognize his name if you've seen "Hamilton, The Musical," or listened to the soundtrack. 3) Then we turn to The History Skinny, the segment where we talk about news stories that relate to history. This week we chat it up with In The Past Lane's Senior Historical Correspondent, Stephanie Yuhl. 4)and finally, it's on to a short piece on the dozens of American slang terms (47 to be precise) that start with the word "Irish."
