With the release of REINVENTING THE STEEL, the 9th (and final) PANTERA studio album (and 6th consisting of the “classic lineup” of Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown, and the brothers Abbott:  Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul), it seemed as if the southern metal lords were set to begin yet another decade of heavy metal domination in not only a new century, but also a new millennium.  After consistently releasing album after album of heavy, grooving, brutal sonic bliss throughout the 90's, the band managed to combine the essence and energy of each of those albums, coalescing into one final masterwork that would serve as the perfect coda to the band's storied career and tremendous output.   It's time to stop by the relaxer room for a pre-show pick me up before “running in flip flops” down “Chunky Bum” Boulevard on your way to our 33rd Floor I.U.B.P. You reached out to us to come on and talk about the world of open source martech and other than knowing that Mautic was an OS automation tool, I didn't really know much else about the space. So I've gotten down some rabbit holes prepping for this episode so pumped to dive in with you today. Why don't we start with the big differences between martech and open source martech.I know that normal software does not include the source code while open source does and modifications and customizations are encouraged, but what does that mean in a martech context? Brian: For me, open source is about control and trust. You have the ability to control how your customer data is handled and where it is stored. We've seen this lead to people taking advantage of more data in their marketing efforts. So then, you can see the code. You can control the data. This leads to trust. Only give the external tools what you want to share. Privacy and compliance get easier. We are talking with lots of medical companies, for example.JT: What's the advantage of this business model, like why make Grouparoo Open source vs. the tried and tested SaaS model?Brian: I don't think the world needs another marktech SaaS solution. There are already thousands of those and yet these problems (integrating tools) persist. So we wanted to do something different. We think that working closer to the engineering level (and making it super easy) will disrupt how these tools get implemented.Because there are so many tools to integrate with, open source will also help us build up those connections. We will actively engage with the more popular ones, but it's exciting to see others interested in contributing connections to the long tail of tools. Finally, there is cost. These SaaS solutions tend to be quite expensive and the incentive structure doesn't line up between the company and the SaaS tool. For example, with Segment you send it a lot of events and more or less get charged per event. Then you pair back what you send. But then, later it turns out that you needed that. Doing all of this and owning that data is great for not only for privacy, flexibility, but also for cost.Phil:Martech today has an awesome article on open source tools, I'll add it in the show notes, but in there, they make the case that the Open source model is not ideal for Martech. The most successful open source projects tend to be developer oriented—developers building tools for other developers, but in this case, the end user is often a marketer. I'm guessing you disagree?Brian:It would certainly seem so.When you want to integrate with Marketo, it's the engineers that do that. I've talked with companies with millions of users that have been paying for Braze for a year and haven't automated anything. I've met marketers that come in as CMO and demand tool X because they like it. A few quarters later, it's more like “I just want to send a cart abandonment email! VPE, whatever you want to use is fine.”I think there is a lot lost when we think of marketers and engineers as separate things and not the organization as a whole. The right thing to do is engage with the engineers that power your marketing tech stack. And meet them where they are. Open source helps with that.If we can get the engineers excited about setting up the right architecture in an open way, then it will be easier to get more data later to existing and new tools.JT: Couple years ago Acquia acquired Mautic. They said in their press release that it was the start of a new generation of open source communities and projects to reinvent the martech stack. Do you see an evolution of open source tools in the automation space?Brian: Mautic was an ambitious project to do everything - to replace the tools you are using now. The evolution is about more target solutions.A notable one is that there are even more marketing tools and they specialize, so Mautic would have to do everything. And maybe it didn't do drip campaigns or push better than Iterable. There's a similar trend in the engineering world, especially on data teams. Data teams are growing and getting their own budgets. They are getting their own set of specialized tools. One example is Fivetran. That will store everything from Hubspot in your data warehouse. The missing piece, as we see it, is to make that actionable in the best tools for use cases in an efficient way.Phil:I want to finish with integration of data in between platforms, and I know you guys solve this problem. Adobe Microsoft and SAP launched the Open Data Initiative that aims to standardize data across platforms. The problem still isn't fixed though. If you're using 14 martech tools, chances are several aren't Adobe products. What's the solution?Brian:(open source community, and a standard by which data can flow between any set of systems, not just into one. You need the community to build all the connectors and adaptors between those tools, so you don't have to custom build and code everything.”I'm focused on building out a community around this tool. We won't live or by whether the code works. That's not a problem. The main thing is to make sure we get in front of the people that would benefit from it. We need to get the word out so that when there is this need, Grouparoo is the obvious solution - both for now (easy to get going) and later through self-serve and lots of integrations. To do that we're doing podcasts, blogging, talking with people that are interested in using it, and building out the team.JT: Alright, Brian, what's Grouparoo?Brian:It solves an organizational problem we saw at TaskRabbit. We saw challenges between the product team and other teams that needed our help getting data for them to be successful, for example marketing and customer support. In general, these things don't get prioritized and engineering becomes the bottleneck. We've talked to others and they saw something similar. So we made Grouparoo to sync data from your product database or data warehouse to the tools you use like Salesforce or Zendesk. But we also made it open source and targeted at engineers to get it installed and data flowing. And then we added in ways for those non-engineers to help themselves to the data they need to be successful. This help to solve the organizational problem through empowerment hat kind of autonomy for, say, a marketing operations team.Phil: How does it work?Brran: Grouparoo is open source and up on Github. There are examples of how to get it running on Docker or Heroku or any way that you run a Node app. You run that and point it at your primary data source. What it will do is create a profile for each of our users, starting with their user_id or email or something like that. Then you can keep building out that profile from that or other sources until you have a centralized profile of who that person is with many properties. With those properties, you can do segmentation. We can create dynamic groups of users based on their property values. For example, “High Value Bay Area” customers or “About to Churn” customers. These will always stay updated automatically with the real data. Now we know these properties and group membership about each user. We can sync this data to destinations like Marketo, Salesforce, Hubspot, Zendesk, etc. You choose what you want to sync and it happens. And it keeps happening as the data changes.--Grouparoo.Brian Leonard on LinkedIn.Intro music by Wowa via Unminus

With the "Shelter in Place" orders in California, we are recording these podcasts from our homes instead of from the Murietta Studios.  The sound quality may not be as high as usual until we all get the necessary recording equipment, and learn the new technology.  Please bare with us during this transition.  Thank you, David & Rhonda David and Rhonda are joined in today’s podcast by Jeremy Karmel, who is working with David on the new Feeling Great app, and Dr. Alex Clarke, a former student of David’s who is practicing TEAM therapy / psychiatry at the Feeling Good Institute in Mountain View, California. One of our loyal podcast fans, Phil McCormack, sent a heartwarming email which read, in part: In light of the pandemic taking us into uncharted territories, I thought it might be interesting to hear of some tips from you that would help folks deal with the situation, kind of like the David’s Top Ten Tips podcast but this one focused on the hysteria which is prevalent as I write. I’m sure your fans would appreciate it and it might be a good jump start for your new book and app, both called Feeling Great. I realize you are incredibly busy and don’t expect an answer. And if you want to tell me to screw myself, I can use your techniques to handle that! I responded like this: Thanks, Phil. I’m trying to put together at least two or three podcasts on the coronavirus from a variety of perspectives! Might read you question to kick start the first one we do, if that’s okay. david Phil immediately shot back this email: You’re an animal! I have no idea of where you get all your energy and motivation–obviously your techniques work (drug free!) so that must be part of it! Kudos to you for all your effort. It is so, so much appreciated!! I sincerely hope you someday get the recognition you deserve!!! I think Feeling Great might be your ticket... Hope so. Please feel free to read question and thanks for not telling me to “screw myself!” Really appreciate that! Phil How cool is that! Rhonda and I are planning several podcasts on this important topic including today’s as well as a podcast on how Rhonda used TEAM to help a woman with severe feelings of depression, anxiety, inadequacy, despair and frustration about the current corona crisis in a single session. We are also planning podcasts on how to communicate with friends and loved ones during the crisis, as well as a survey to assess changes in mood (depression, anxiety, anger, relationship satisfaction and happiness) since the corona virus hit, and possibly  more. When the survey is ready, we’ll announce it and send you a link in case you’d like to let us know how you've been feeling, and how your feelings might have changed since the virus hit! Rhonda kick starts today’s session by reading a list of negative thoughts from folks who are freaked out about the corona virus, including these: Negative Thoughts with Probable Cognitive Distortions The world will turn into an apocalypse. I’ll be a carrier and won’t know it and then I'll infect my partner and children who will get really sick. I’m divorced and I think my ex- will try to keep me from my kids. She won’t be as vigilant as I am about keeping our kids healthy. They’ll get sick and infect me. I’m looking for a job right now, but no one will be hiring for a long time and I’ll never get a job. I won’t have enough money to pay my rent and I’ll be evicted from my apartment and end up homeless (or) my business will go out of business. I won't have enough money to have fun for several months. My parents will contract the virus, especially one of my parents who has some chronic health stuff, and get really sick or die. I’m going to get cabin fever. I will lose a sense of self/connection to reality with how surreal everything is. People in my life will die from the virus. * * * Negative Thoughts that are Probably Not Distorted The numbers of infected people are way higher than what's being reported because there's no testing The pandemic is worsening. The pandemic will get much worse than we realize now. Needier populations -- people who have lost work who really need it (restaurant workers, hotel, caterers, production staff, people with no savings, etc) — will suffer. The social fabric is going to break down. Things are going to continue worsening as climate change worsens. I live too far from my parents to help take care of them. Rhonda, Alex, David, and Jeremy begin by discussing several of the basic ideas of TEAM-CBT. We feel the way we think. In other words, the events of this world—like the corona virus—cannot have any effect on how we feel. All of our negative and positive feelings result from our thoughts, or “cognitions.” This idea goes back nearly 2,000 years to the teachings of the Greek Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, who said that people are disturbed, not by the things that happen, but by our views of them. Some negative feelings are healthy and some or not. Healthy fear is not the same as neurotic anxiety. Healthy sadness is not the same as depression. Healthy remorse is not the same as neurotic anxiety. And so forth. Healthy anger is not the same as unhealthy anger. Healthy negative feelings result from valid negative thoughts, like “We are in danger because of the spread of the corona virus, and we need to be vigilant to protect ourselves and our loved ones.” Unhealthy negative feelings result from distorted negative thoughts, like "The world will turn into an apocalypse." Anxiety, panic, and depression, in contrast, result from distorted negative thoughts, like many of those that Rhonda read. For example, think about this thought: “My parents will die and I may never see them again.” Review the list of  cognitive distortions and see if you can spot some! This thought is likely to be at least somewhat distorted since your parents probably won’t die. For example, in China there have been around 3,300 deaths so far, and the epidemic has finally been slowing in the past few days. Since there are more than a billion people in China, the odds that you or someone in your family will die, while significant, appear to be incredibly low. So while there is clearly some risk, the distortion would be Magnification, Fortune Telling, and Emotional Reasoning, the three distortions that trigger all feelings of anxiety. In addition, you can see your parents right now if you like, using Skype, for example. So, while that thought also contains a grain of truth, it arguably involves Discounting the Positive as well. In spite of these considerations, TEAM therapist don’t try to “fix” or “help” just because someone may have distorted negative thoughts. Trying to help without first addressing therapeutic resistance is the most common error therapists make, and the most common error most people us make. For example, you will hear politicians telling people to “stay CALM,” or trying to encourage people with good news or promises which sometimes don’t seem entirely honest. Instead of jumping in and trying to "help," TEAM-CBT therapists first ask the person who is upset if they are looking for help. Sometimes, people aren't asking for "help" or cheer-leading, they just want someone to listen and provide validation and support. If the person does want help with negative feelings like panic, depression, frustration, loneliness, or inadequacy, we do a little thought experiment and say: "Imagine that we had a Magic Button, and if press it, all your negative feelings will instantly vanish, with no effort, and you'll feel terrific. Will you push the Magic Button?" Most people say they'd gladly push the button! Then we say that while we don't have a Magic Button, we've got some tremendous techniques that could help them reduce or even eliminate their negative feelings, but don't think it would be such a good idea to do that because their negative thoughts and feelings may be expressions of their core values as a human being, and what is most beautiful and awesome about them, and that their may be some important benefits, or advantages of their negative thoughts and feelings. And maybe we should list those before making any decision to press the Magic Button and make everything disappear. If you're upset, you can try this right now. First, circle your negative feelings and estimate how strong each category is, between 0 and 100%. If you click here, you can see an example of this on the Emotions table of the Daily Mood Log of a woman who was upset about the corona virus scare. Then ask these two questions about each feeling: What does this negative feelings show about me and my core values that’s positive and awesome? What are some benefits or advantages of this negative feelings are. How might it help me, or my loved ones? I call this new technique Positive Reframing. In other words, I want to honor your negative thoughts and feelings before we think about changing them! This is called Positive Reframing and it is the key to the incredibly rapid changes we typically see when using TEAM-CBT.  Typically, we come up with a list of a long list of compelling positives. Then I point out that if they push the Magic Button, all those positives will go down the drain, along with their negative feelings. Would they really want to do that? Now you're in a trap, or dilemma. One the one hand, you are suffering and desperately want to feel better. But at the same time, you don't want to lose all of those awesome positives! Fortunately, we can resolve this paradox. Instead of trying to make your negative feelings disappear by pushing the Magic Button, imagine that we had a Magic Dial instead, and you could dial each negative feeling down to a lower level that would allow you to keep all the positives on your list, and still feel better. What would you dial each type of negative feeling down to? For example, if you're feeling 80% panic or 90% depressed or angry about the corona virus, and you could dial each emotion down to a lower level, what would you dial them down to? You can see an example of this if you click here. As you can see, this person has put these new levels in the "% Goal" column of the emotion table. Jeremy provides a touching real life example of this. He feel intense anger because his fiancé, a nurse—is working in a hospital with a shortage of protective masks. He becomes tearful when he realizes that his anger is actually an expression of his intense love for her. The change in how he feels is almost instantaneous, and touching. The group further illustrate this by using Positive Reframing with many of the negative feelings our podcast listeners like you may be having. Jeremy concludes by drawing a critically important distinction between Positive Reframing, which is nearly always helpful, and “cheer leading,” which is rarely or never helpful, and  can actually be downright irritating! This table below highlights some of the critical differences. Is Positive Reframing Just Cheerleading Warmed Over? by David and Jeremy Cheer Leading Positive Reframing You’re trying to cheer someone up to make them feel better. You are highlighting the benefits of NOT changing. You say generally nice things about someone, like “you’re a good person,” or “you’re a survivor,” or “don’t be so hard on yourself.” The positives are not general but embedded within specific negative thoughts and feelings. You don’t acknowledge the validity or beauty of the person’s negative thoughts and emotions. In fact, you’re trying to tell them that they’re wrong to feel upset! This is always preceded by doing superb empathy. Positive Reframing is actually a deeper form of empathy because you’re honoring the patient’s core values. Cheerleading is irritating to almost everybody who’s upset, because you aren’t listening or showing any compassion or respect. The effect is enlightening and leads to feelings of relief, pride, peace, and acceptance. You’re trying to control the other person. You’re telling them how they should think and feel. There’s no acceptance. You’re Sitting with Open Hands. You’re bringing hidden motivations to conscious awareness so they can decide where to steer the ship. Hollow praise sounds dismissive, glib, and insincere. This technique is very difficult and challenging to learn because you have to let go of the idea that you know what’s best for other people. Thanks for tuning in, and let us know what you thought about today’s program! Oh, if you clicked on the two links to the Daily Mood Log of the woman who was intensely upset about the corona virus, and want to find out what happened in her magical TEAM-CBT session with Rhonda, tune in to our next CoronaCast! Until then, Rhonda, Alex, Jeremy, and David

I'd recommend going, flying into Denpasar, and getting down towards Dreamland beach. That's at the southernmost tip of Bali. The waves there, I'm a beginning surfer too, the waves there aren't very big, 5, 5, 4 - 5 feet, and just really nice people there. The locals are willing to help you. You meet a lot of Balinese young kids, 12, 13 years old. They're singing in the water as they surf. They're giving each wave names, so It's a lot of fun and there's no attitude, and people are there just to have fun. It's a good time.Todd: Wow, that sounds nice.Phil: That area of Indonesia is really nice. Lombok is nice too. If you are more wanting to relax, I would go to Lombok, and then go up to Gili Trawangan, which is a small island off the east coast of Lombok. There are no cars on the island. The electricity is a little dodgy. It might flicker on and off. Food is great. You get fresh fish all the time. Snorkeling's nice if you like scuba diving. You can arrange tours through several companies there. But, yeah, I really like Gili Trawangan and I would recommend that to anyone who wants to relax for a couple of weeks.

Conversations with Phil Gerbyshak - Aligning your mindset, skill set and tool set for peak performance

This episode is unlike any I've done before, and it turned out terrifically well. If talking about sex makes you uncomfortable, then this episode is especially for you. Especially if you're a woman. I talked to Kit Murray Maloney, CEO of O'Actually. O’actually celebrates sexually stimulating content, products, and knowledge that focuses on enhancing and stimulating women’s sexual pleasure. The company is dedicated to changing the landscape of adult entertainment to prioritize women’s arousal by distributing new types of film, audio, visual arts, and literature. O’actually also shares sexual enhancement knowledge and recommends products that promote female pleasure. Kit bared her soul (no pun intended) to talk honestly about the importance of women's orgasms, why masturbation is ok, and why porn and pleasure are at opposite ends of the spectrum. On Porn, Masturbation and Pleasure Phil: Welcome to the show Kit. Tell us why you started O’Actually. Kit: We are here to remind women to owning their own pleasure that is often missed we are here to remind everyone involved that it is important. There’s a real lack of awareness around women's pleasure, and most porn is made purposefully for men. It isn’t made for real life. Phil: Are you telling me porn isn’t real life? Ha! Kit: With the persuasiveness with porn in mainstream life it gets real muddled with entertainment and reality, with the age a young man first sees porn has dropped from 11 to 8. Adults can realize that porn isn’t reality but if you are introduced at a young age to sexuality through porn, you’ll wind up confused. Not to mention that porn is adult entertainment and made for men to enjoy alone and they are geared towards that stimulus. Because it’s all we have, it gets turned into education or that's thinking that’s what women's bodies are meant to look like. Phil: How do we introduce that subject without it being that weird story of the stork or odd story of the birds and bees? Kit: It does seem we have these extreme porn stories with sex and none of its real.  We need to be open and honest factual and truthful. We need to talk about pleasure and we need to be honored. Pleasure is this wildly missing word with sex educators. I’d like to ask my audience and yours for anyone that has used that word when talking about sex. That used the ‘p’ word. Share this: Pleasure is this wildly missing word with sex educators. @KitMalo http://bit.ly/2cRWIxO I’d like to celebrate anyone I really think they need to be honored and thanked for bringing that in. We really focus on prevention, prevention of disease, prevention pregnancy, what we don’t want to happen, we are lacking the potential the focus and exploration of all the great things of sex and sexuality. Phil: How did you get introduced to this? Kit: Back when I was 18 and I was about to go to college and I got affected by the rates of sexual assault on college campus knowing this was arena I wanted to be involved. I went to my college and I was I couldn't hold this negativity into and during this time I experienced my own sexual trauma that I only started sharing.  A couple of years ago I realized pleasure is completely missing from the conversation. Heal the trauma A space where we can we all be honest Phil: Kit, what is your background? Kit: I was Engaged in Social Activism for about 20 years, accidently picked up a women's study minor. I earned a masters in social economics and gender studies.  From there, I got involved with a few early stage businesses and startups. Phil: You have a podcast. Tell us about that. Kit: The podcast has been a gift and it combines the things that I intuitively love doing. And I love doing it and learn so much. I’ve had beautiful conversations and it’s been such a gift and I’ve taken it anywhere that I have had questions or been curious. There have been no taboo topics Phil: Take us through the services that you provide and the products you sell. Kit: Please keep checking out our site, we are about to have a lot more there it has to be highly curated. Which is hard.  And there’s some exciting stuff to come. There is a surprising amount of women who love to write erotica and I love to give them a space to contribute and to be present and active. Phil: It’s not something people talk about.  Why do we think it’s such a taboo subject?  Kit: We tell ourselves so many stories as a society and individuals. About sex. And I think we really put sex and women's sexuality into prude and whore dynamic and it’s really hard to navigate what’s in the middle where are the boundaries. And who am I? I don’t live up these clichés? I don’t live up these expectations of people with people who give themselves permission for sex If you are going to call me a bad name or something, that usually has something to do with the other person than with me. Phil: Why is it so challenging? Kit: We are just so ingrained to never talk about masturbation or solo-sex. If we look at sitcoms there is an abnormal amount of jokes around male masturbation and none around about women. I have a great group of women friends and I would have said that we don’t have any taboo topics and then I realized we do have those taboo topics; we don’t talk about solo sex or adult entertainment. When we create the space to listen and hear and be honest ourselves we are allowing others to give back to us in that same manner and that’s what I found with close with whether it be friends or family. It’s been great for me, I get to ask all those questions. Phil: That’s kind of scary, right? Kit: Once we get past that initial uncomfortable part, we get to the business sense. There is the depth and soul to it. and the the genuine holistic part and the importance of orgasms in your daily routine. So many entrepreneurs don’t talk about sex, they don’t consider it in self care or routines and I am one of the few entrepreneurs that includes it in my talk about self care and routines who has awareness of sex. I disdain the term work hard play hard. I want to love my work, love my play. I want to genuinely love my life. Now don’t get me wrong, I have my bad days, I am human. It’s not yet truly in the mainstream, to think that. It’s a mind shift on things, for sure. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Allow yourself to enjoy it. Share this: I disdain the term work hard play hard. I want to love my work, my play. I want to genuinely love my life. @kitmalo http://bit.ly/2cRWIxO It is deeply important to me and I prioritize things and things comes to fruition for me. Really cool things are possible when you focus on them.  And, you have to make choices. There is a balance and trade-offs. Phil: How can women get started on the path on finding their pleasure? Kit: We talk about triggers in self development, we can have pleasure triggers. We can pleasure triggers that infuse happiness and pleasure.  Just identify one pleasure trigger. It could be anything, and it could change. In this episode, Phil is joined by William Powell, The Leadership Advisor, and an expert in human flourishing and on imposter syndrome. Show notes from William Powell - on Human Flourishing and the Imposter Syndrome    Phil: You are an expert in Human Flourishing, which I don't know anyone else even knows about. What is it and why does it matter?  William: Comes from the Greek, focus on the whole person including the environment, when in the work environment when management focuses on the whole person including the environment the whole idea is that human is going to flourish and be profitable  I’ve been applying that across all aspects of my life, my family my business the interconnectedness of everything, how we flourish of our environment .  Phil: How did you get into this, Human Flourishing?  William: I grew up in a poor background, the narrative I told myself and I chased things as a young man that I probably didn’t need and more disruptive than i needed and a I met people that were key in changing the direction  I wrote a book, a kindle book, Personal Ecology, about self leadership and ecology and how the environment around influences you and how you influence it. Fell into it and how can i help other people and how can i help other people manifest it  Phil: Let's talk about imposter syndrome. I suffer from this sometimes. You've publicly said you do too. Let's talk about it.     William: Grew up poor challenging and frustrating, my mom was disabled, grew up in the trailer park getting beat up at school for being the poor kid that wore the same clothes and to have such a clear understanding of poverty at a young age.  Creating the narrative in my head that made sense to me, even if it wasn’t accurate.  But to get here… the biggest challenge to get here wasn't to get here wasn’t to make the money but to overcome the narrative i had developed form that sense of challenge, that was my biggest obstacle. It is my biggest anxiety and even now it still wants to creep out. It isn’t the narrative that I want.    Phil: Let's talk about how you cope, what are the strategies you use that are successful or even the ones that don’t work and suck?   William: Overcompensate, lizard brain, of course, over coping mechanisms to try deflect and get people to try and cheer you on…. For me, that is my is go to place, when i don’t have to take responsibly. For me it’s about being aware that i am feeding myself a false narrative. It may be differ for other people, understanding what’s your go to place then developing the right place and what's the good self leadership for this, how do I lead the guy in the mirror? Phil: What are the roadblocks for making things simple?  William: Pace is a big deal.  The more I have on my plate the more productive.  Legitimately understanding my capacity. For me it was about pace and capacity. The distance between stimulus and response and it may be different for others, you need to know what that trigger is, and no one can say what that is?  Phil: What is the imposter syndrome?    William: Imposter syndrome is defined by what’s the lie in your narrative and we all have that narrative in our brain that it keeps feeding us. Inside that narrative that you start to tell yourself. Self conscious does not understand sarcasm or self deprecating ways. One of the reasons negative self talk can be so destructive.    Be honest. Admit when you aren’t equipped, be willing to be transparent and vulnerable.  You aren’t allowing others to flourish by not admitting your vulnerabilities. Admit when you aren’t good at something.   Phil: One bit of advice for leaders to get started down the path of flourishing and really building others around them better ecology.  William: Look at your organization or team If my people were plants and our culture were environment our process would be the climate they have to exist in would we get fined by the epa or not? Would this help them flourish as a human being? Would this find creative outlets for their passion and develop their skills, well rested and contribute to their organization?  More from William Powell Connect with William Powell on Twitter Get a copy of William's book Personal Ecology Human Flourishing, the 21st century definition of success Human Flourishing Blog

Conversations with Phil Gerbyshak - Aligning your mindset, skill set and tool set for peak performance

In this episode of Conversations with Phil, I talk to Bernie Borges of Find and Convert, one of my favorite marketing and sales experts. We got to talk in person when I first moved to Tampa, and now, we got to record our conversation so you can listen in as we talk about social business, sales, and more. Phil: Can you start by telling us about your podcast? Bernie: My podcast is called Social Business Engine - and we have 106 episodes, it’s mostly large brands, IBM, Wal-Mart, and how they use social media strategically in their business across different functions, not just marketing… in sales, human resources, recruiting and internal communications. Phil: How are you qualified to talk about social business? Bernie: I have 10 years in tech sales and then transitioned over to marketing, 10yrs in corporate marketing, and my agency is 14 yrs old. Plus I’ve been podcasting. Phil: Why have a social business? Bernie: Simply put: Consumers don’t want to hear from the marketing department, they want to hear from the people. Click to tweet this quote! It’s the job of the marketing department to cross promote and tell stories to show others the good work your company is doing. Phil: What are you up against if you think you are just going to advertise on social? Bernie: If you don’t have a big brand or big budget then you’ve got to get out into the employee ranks and identify the ones that are doing amazing things for your company and capture their stories. Meet those people face to face and interview them, make it comfortable for them to tell their stories and then the marketing department’s role is to package it up for telling/sharing. Phil: Why do you think that more organizations don’t do that? Why doesn’t it work? Bernie: They don’t know to do that. They haven’t thought of that approach, they are working on the traditional model. Phil: What’s the benefit of getting the employee to tell their story instead of the brand? Bernie: Edelman Trust Barometer has been published every year, and it shows people trust people over the brand.  When you strengthen your bond with your employee and you strengthen your relationship with your customer. Phil: Why is target audience so important? Bernie: Delivering your marketing content to the audience that has the most probability of sharing your message and influence sales. A B2B seller has to understand the buyer’s journey and understand all the stages of the buyer’s journey and what the buyer needs in each of those stages and all the messages have to align with each stage. Jason Miller from LinkedIn has coined a phrase “Big rock content.” Make a big rock - then you can slice it up and repurpose it. From creating one big piece of content and through smart persona based marketing you create assets for each persona. Phil: So what’s next for Bernie Borges? Bernie: I’ve been delivering a Social Sharing training program to different companies and now packaging it up to deliver online for business development. Session 1 is the ‘Why” and then sessions 2-4 are all one on one coaching sessions. Once they start seeing the results they really start to understand it. Want more from Bernie Borges? Me too!
