We're continuing our theme of New Year New You segments. One of the most common New Year's resolutions is to lose weight and get in shape; and we've discussed before how exercise can be not only beneficial for the body but our minds as well. In this week's edition of Dr. Greg Davis on Medicine we revisit an in depth interview with Jennifer Heisz, author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind (available through Harper Collins). Heisz is an Associate Professor in Kinesiology and Associate Director (Seniors) of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence at McMaster University.
The title says it all. No matter what you're doing, or how much powder you're drinking, we're still pretty sure you're still not getting all the protein you should be. Stuart Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health. He is also the Director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE) and the McMaster Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research, and Lab Lead for the Exercise Metabolism Research Group. Stuart's research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on human skeletal muscle protein turnover. He chats with Dr. Pam about when to get that protein in your meals, why eggs are back on the good list, the best kinds of proteins, and what you risk when you don't get enough.

Make sure you're getting your daily dose of fish oil. It is one of the basic rules of nutrition and there is no argument that omega-3 fatty acids are very important for our health. But those fishy burps are irksome. The science behind - and our understanding of omega-3 oils - has come a long way. In today's episode we're going to explore how nano-dispersion technology is being used to fuel our bodies with a new smoothie, EO3 (Enhanced Omega-3), without the downside of unpleasant belching. In collaboration with EO3, LLAMA brought together the company's founder, Janne Karin Sande, who's based on Oslo, Norway, and Prof. Stuart Phillips, director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE) at McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada, to discuss the drink, which contains Norwegian cod liver oil and protein. This episode is brought to you in association with EO3, the ready to drink product, made with fish oil and protein, designed to help athletes train faster and harder with optimum recovery. Backed by science EO3 is a complete nutritional solution for cognitive and physical benefits. A better way to get the Omega 3 your body needs. Prof. Phillips sits on the scientific advisory board for EO3.Recorded: June 6, 2022 | Read a transcript and show notes at the LLAMA podcast website. The Live Long and Master Aging podcast, a HealthSpan Media LLC production, shares ideas but does not offer medical advice. Welcome back, everyone! I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and got a chance to soak up some sun, get some vitamin D, see friends and family, and eat some glorious meats. I know I did. If you're new to this podcast, I’m Brian Sanders and I'm making a film called Food Lies that goes to the beginning of human history to find out what we should be eating. We go through all the bad science that has led us astray, the new science that vindicates ancestral eating, and we even get into how we can eat meat in a not only sustainable way, but one that it is regenerative to the environment. All of these topics have been covered in the now 84 episodes of this podcast, so please start back at episode 1. Today I’m talking to Professor Stu Phillips who is one of the world’s leading authorities on protein and muscle science. He shares vital information in this interview on long term health, short term health such as fat loss and muscle gain, as well as combating the multitude of protein myths out there. Professor Phillips is the director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE), director of the McMaster Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health in Aging. In addition to being a full Professor in Kinesiology, also Graduate Faculty in the School of Medicine at McMaster University. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American College of Nutrition (ACN). His research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on the mechanisms of human skeletal muscle protein turnover. He is also keenly interested in diet- and exercise-induced changes in body composition particularly in older persons. While we’re on the topic of protein we all know the best sources are from grass finished, well-raised animals. Luckily that’s what we specialize in at http://NoseToTail.org that’s a little typographical humor for you there. You can get our extra-nutritious meat from our family farm in Texas delivered to your door as long as you're in the 48 contiguous United States. Our signature product is the Primal ground beef which includes liver, heart, kidney, and spleen, all without the hassle of incorporating them yourself. It also tastes great. I like to add a little seasoning to mine, but even if you don’t, it just tastes like a richer beef flavor. We have boxes that include a variety of cuts including the primal beef, sausage, beef bacon, and our premium boxes include bone meal for calcium (which you can add into the ground beef or use in bone broth), sardines (for more calcium and magnesium, among other things), and whole cod liver pieces in cod liver oil for vitamin A, D, and others. This is the full nutrient spectrum here! You even get marrow bones. Check out our great meats that are also great for the land at http://NoseToTail.org while supplies last. We’re still selling out each week so check in often! And now please get your steak ready for this protein info extravaganza with Professor Stuart Philips. Our guest today Dr. Stuart Phillips, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, who is best known for his research into muscle health and the benefits of dietary protein. Stu is the director of the McMaster Physical Activity Centre of Excellence, a state-of-the-art exercise research and training center. It is devoted to studying and improving the health and well-being of older adults as well as people with chronic diseases and disabilities. In addition to his work in the kinesiology department at McMaster, Stu is adjunct professor in the university’s School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American College of Nutrition. He received the New Investigator Award from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, the Ontario Premier's Research Excellence Award, and the Young Investigator Award from Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. In today’s interview we discuss: [00:08:19] Dawn introduces the importance of dietary protein and its role in muscle health, and tissue regeneration more generally, which makes it one of the only macro nutrients we need on a daily basis. [00:10:59] A recent study (2017) showed that whole eggs promoted a greater amount of muscle protein synthesis than egg whites, suggesting that there may be benefits to the extra nutrients found in the egg yolk. [00:12:53] Why Stu believes the recommended daily allowance for protein is too low. [00:14:06] The differences between animal and plant-based protein. [00:16:31] The phenomenon of muscle synthesis (anabolism) and catabolism. [00:17:54] Highlights of the recent findings coming out of Kevin Tipton’s group which indicates that the dose-response relationship may depend on the amount of muscle tissue that was recruited during exercise, with the ingestion of 40 g protein further increasing muscle protein. [00:20:43]A 2013 paper from Stu’s group titled, “Dose-dependent responses of myofibrillar protein synthesis with beef ingestion are enhanced with resistance exercise in middle-aged men.” [00:27:52] Stu’s thoughts on the recommendation of pre-sleep protein feeding. [00:37:52] An overview of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence, a state-of-the-art, exercise research and training lab at McMaster. [00:43:37] The importance of maintaining healthy functional muscle mass and function as we move into middle and later life. [00:46:56] Stu’s paper, “Muscle Disuse as a Pivotal Problem in Sarcopenia-Related Muscle Loss and Dysfunction.” [00:50:25] The need to add more protein to our diets as we get older, which is something that Dr. Valter Longo discussed on episode 64 of STEM-Talk. [00:56:24 How fasting affects muscle protein turnover, which were topics covered in episode 7 of STEM-Talk, an interview with Mark Mattson, and episode 79, which was an interview with Satchin Panda, author of the “The Circadian Code.” [00:57:32] Whether a ketogenic diet with sufficient protein would in any way be detrimental to muscle mass. [01:05:47] Stu’s thoughts on a study that was conducted on behalf of the American College of Sports Medicine that found supplementation with HMB failed to enhance body composition to a greater extent than a placebo. Show notes [0:02:51] Stu talks about being born in the UK but growing up in Canada. [00:03:09] Dawn asks about Stu’s passions for all kinds of sports as a kid. [00:03:27] Stu recalls his high school science teacher, who was responsible for getting him interested in biology and chemistry. [00:03:44] Dawn asks what led Stu to choose McMaster University after high school. [00:04:19] Ken brings up that Stu was captain of the Ruby team his senior year, and while it looked as though he was headed to a great season, things didn’t turn out as planned. He asks how that season led to Stu’s decision to focus on nutritional biochemistry. [00:05:16] Stu explains how he ended up at Waterloo University to...
