This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're back! After taking a midsummer break, we come back with some of your favourite characters from this past season including the buffoonish U.S. President, and our oafish Ontario Premier, and in the third topic, just in time for Labour Day, we'll have some genuine labour news to get excited about! We might have taken some time off for the last couple of weeks, but the new sure didn't!! This Thursday, August 21, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Dark Skies. Flight attendants from Air Canada went on strike last weekend, and they looked to be on strike for the long haul until the two sides reached a deal on Tuesday. Despite pressure from the federal government and the courts, the CUPE represented workers remained defiant after spending years doing, on average, 30 hours of unpaid work every month. Meanwhile, workers and average folk are showing incredible solidarity on this issue, so is this the Labour (Day) revolution we've been waiting for? "A Little Poke." That's what Premier Doug Ford says he wants to give the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. In Ottawa for AMO this week, Ford looked to secure his bonafides as "Captain Canada", but back at home he's still getting hit hard for school infrastructure funding, benefiting the friends with the Highway 413 route, and new concerns about the finances of Ontario Place anchor tenant Therme. Is Ford the one that needs poked? Baked Alaska Summit. For the first since he ordered a full-scale invasion into Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin was on U.S. soil and gratefully received by President Donald Trump. Three hours later, the leaders announced that they had *not* reached a deal to end the war that Russia started, and scuttlebutt says members of Team Trump were shook by what they had seen behind closed doors. Since then, Trump met with European leaders, including Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but did any of this Nobel Peace Prize baiting get tangible results? Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Bob Rae is a former Ontario Premier. He's a former interim Liberal Party leader. He's a Rhodes Scholar and at this moment he is Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations. Bob Rae has a private Twitter account in which he says his opinions are his own. They do not represent the government and never has that been more true than right now. A tweet the whole world is retweeting and liking from Bob Rae who says ''Need to understand the systematic, brutal cruelty of Hamas. Any organization like this has to be destroyed.'' These words are attached to words spoken by a volunteer rescuer in Southern Israel, an eyewitness to what Hamas did to men women and children, what Hamas did to babies. The torture and mass murder of Civilians. Bob Rae's message is that an organizaton this brutal needs to be destroyed. The government of Canada takes no such position. Scores of Liberal MPs actually want the Prime Minister to call for a ceasefire. Hamas Terrorists struck only two weeks ago today, October 7th, 2023 a day to borrow a former US President's words will live in infamy. The message that more than 20 Liberal MPs want Justin Trudeau to carry would live in insanity, some would say. Imagine telling the US to declare a ceasefire with Japan two weeks after Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 or a ceasefire with al-Quaida two weeks after September 11th, 2001. Canada's Prime Minister has a political problem on his hands. If the Conservative Party of Canada agrees with Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations and the Prime Minister is found equivocating on the biggest geopolitical event of this year, Canadians may view Poilievre as a better representative of Canadian values than the current Prime Minister. But I am now in the realm of speculation. I don;t know that Canadians want Hamas destroyed. I have no data to support that. And Canadians may say Yes to the simple question do you want the terrorist organization destroyed but they may give a different answer if the question, Do you want Hamas destroyed even if the military operation to end Hamas may cost the lives of a hundred thousand Palestinians in Gaza? Tough times come with tough questions. This is not a video game. It's a real war, with real suffering and while Canadians can make judgements about Bob Rae and Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre this war is not about them. But this war that Hamas started two weeks ago with the mass murder and torture and kidnapping of Israeli civilians is not anywhere close to a ceasefire and may not be anywhere close to one a month from now and possibly a year from now. There is no way of knowing today how many countries will get militarily involved in this war. But we do know now that what happened two weeks ago today in Israel, the Israeli equivalent of 15 Nine Elevens, what happened on October 7th, 2023 will never be forgotten - Never.

Gentle reminder from Hen Mazzig on Twitter : if Hamas did not send thousands of terrorists into Israel on October 7, murdered 1,300 innocent civilians, and kidnapped 200 babies and elderly women, there would be no war. Mazzig is right and he is not illustrating the many atrocities that made up the days of Hamas Terror. Many people apparently don't want to hear those stories. Many even call them lies. Call it Hamas Denial if you like but it's a growing movement. Many progressives who claim to believe in Women's rights, Civil Rights, LGBTQ rights and workers rights appear to give Hamas a pass for not only denying those rights to Palestinians but murdering those who try to exercise them. Try organising a union in Gaza. Try having an openly Gay relationship. Try being a woman, dressing the way you want, working where you want getting an education, and getting a life where you are not treated like a milking cow. Gaza is where progressivism goes to die. But progressives give Hamas a pass, because Hamas does whatever they can to exterminate the Jewish state. Hamas doesn't want peace. They want genocide. I get that it's tough for a progressive to hear. Their problem. Not mine. I am not a progressive. I am a moderate, or what we once called normal. So Bruce Arthur is a Toronto Star writer I love to bring on the podcast. He made his bones in Sports but he has a great to deal to add to the dialogue of a nation. His most recent column is about The reason I wrote about Nate Erskine Smith, a Liberal MP who might be just the ticket for the leader of the Ontario Liberal party. Bruce says Erskine Smith is policy-obsessed and also lives in the real world and when we're having multiple crises, it might be a good thing to have an Ontario Premier who understands policy. Can't disagree with Bruce. The current populist premier is a train wreck on so many tracks. It would be better to have a premier who doesn't have populist contempt for people who know things, a Premier who isn't filling time with Hey Folks Hey Folks Hey Folks when he has nothing of substance to offer.  Jim Jordan a Congressman from Ohio wants to have one of the most powerful positions in the world. Wants to be Speaker of the US House of Representatives. All money bills begin the House. Nothing can get done unless it's paid for. This is the House Jim Jordan wants to lead. In an interview with Dana Bash, Jordan says If Donald Trump wants to store classified material in a box in a bathroom, his bathroom he can do it." Jordan isn't fit to run a dog kennel. Hopefully Republicans will kennel him like they have their predecessors. Who let these dogs out? Donald Trump. We'll see if American justice will kennel America's wolf in wolf's clothing.

“People are dying from your fatphobia and that's wild. We are so hung up on the way theatre has looked forever that we can't change our perspective enough to literally save people's lives.”  TW: Discussion of eating disorders. I found Greg on TikTok. Greg is the founder of EveryBODY on Stage, which aims to break down stigma and fat-phobia in the arts. There is such multi-layered dialogue when it comes to each person's experience. Being a CoVid long hauler changed my body by gaining weight – and even when I find the positives and self love when it comes to myself, my body, and the industry, it's rooted in privilege.  And when it comes to weight and age – why is it that a bigger body in educational theatre equals playing someone older or someone not worthy of love? How does that affect someone in their formative years? Why is it we are praised for losing weight, even when it's done in an unhealthy way? Greg and I breakdown how fatphobia dominates the theatre industry, while shedding light on the people who are doing their best to fix this. Plus, we also get into how Funny Girl on Broadway battled responses based in fatphobia and anti-semitism and how as an industry, we need to move forward by communicating with kindness.  Please note – the group I talk about in the episode who's name slips my mind is The Industry Standard Group (TISG) who are innovating Broadway by finding new pathways toward equitable representation in commercial theatre. Also, use the code “MULTI” at the EveryBODY on Stage store for a discount at https://www.everybodyonstage.com/ “There is this narrative that a fat body is bad and ugly and gross. I'm done with that. I don't care if other people find me attractive because I don't need that anymore. I am happy in my body and I deserve to take up space in this body. So, like, I don't know… get into it society.”  Greg Carruthers (he/him, she/her) is a Toronto-based choreographer, actor and body-positive activist (@EveryBODYonStage). Hailing from Bradford, Ontario, Greg studied Music Theatre Performance at St. Lawrence College which recently nominated him for an Ontario Premier's Award. Greg has choreographed for Theatre Sheridan, Hart House Theatre, Canada's Wonderland, The Madinat Theatre (Dubai), and the July 1st ceremonies at Queens Park (Toronto). As a performer, Greg was most recently seen on the 1st National Tour of 'Trey Parker's Cannibal the Musical'. As the Artistic Producer and Founder of EveryBODY on Stage, Greg has produced projects for Musical Stage Co's “Musical Moments” and Buddies in Bad Times “Queer Pride Festival”. With funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, Greg conceived, choreographed and produced a short film titled "Cell Block Tango: Reimagined" which was screened as part of the Toronto Outdoor Picture Show. It has now officially been two weeks since the Freedom Convoy protest in Canada reached the capital city of Ottawa. And amid all of the challenges that they are facing—from the media, from the police, from the courts, from politicians, from Big Tech, and so on—it appears that their protest is actually working. As of Friday, five of Canada's provinces have announced that they will begin to roll back their COVID-19 restrictions. And then furthermore, in a leaked private phone call, Doug Ford—who is the premier of Ontario, Canada's largest province—said that he is about to scrap the vaccine passport and go back to normal. Meanwhile, as the Winter Olympics are currently being played out in China—behind the scenes it's still a communist dictatorship that is jailing dissidents left and right. And so, we got a chance to speak with Simon Zhang—who is an architect here in America—but whose mother was arrested in China just three days before the start of the Olympics games, simply because of her spiritual beliefs. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

The Roy Green Show Podcast - Bob Mitchell is an Albertan and a 45-year veteran of the Alberta oil fields. Mr. Mitchell has traveled the world's oil producing regions. After several conversations with him about the challenges of being in the oil sands business, Roy invited him on the show, to share a message for his fellow Canadians. Last weekend, Premiers Jason Kenney of Alberta and Blaine Higgs of New Brunswick both spoke on the program about equalization payments to Quebec and the Premier of Quebec Francois Legault maintaining he doesn't want oil from the West crossing the province in a new state-of-the-art pipeline (Energy East) delivering such oil & products to New Brunswick's Irving refinery in St. John. A look back to last December and a Leger poll of Quebec residents for the Montreal Economic Institute on the issue of Alberta oil and a pipeline crossing the province shows a very different picture as Quebecers support both Alberta oil and a pipeline. It's time to revisit the results of the Leger poll. Will TMX be the final pipeline for Canada? And have C-69 and C-48 kneecapped Canada's economy? Running $20 billion deficits with the national debt approaching $700 billion (in supposed good times) where will the revenue come from to pay for Canada's social programs, health care, pensions and more with the Canadian energy industry (AB & SK) locked up, while foreign energy (oil) remains welcome in tanker-happy Eastern Canada? A Canadian mayor is sounding the alarm … again. Mayor Lori Ackerman of the City of Fort St. John, British Columbia appeared before Canada's Senate on May 13 this year during the Senate hearings on Bill C-69. With the Canadian Senate signing off on C-69 (the Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act) and C-48 the oil tanker ban bill (B.C.), what awaits? Global News broke the story of controversial appointments made by Ontario Premier Doug Ford's office. They include 26-year-old Tyler Albrecht, a friend of the son of, until yesterday, Ford's Chief of Staff Dean French. Albrecht's job would have consisted of being an agent-general for Ontario based in New York City and would came with a $164,000 salary. Global News also found another possible connection exists between French and Taylor Shields, who's based in London and is a cousin of French's wife. Both appointments were cancelled by the Ontario Premier. And the Danforth mass shooting in Toronto leaves many questions unanswered. Roy's guest has focused his coverage on the shooting and subsequent police investigation since it took place. Guests: Bob Mitchell Germain Belzile, Senior Associate Researcher with the Montreal Economic Institute Dan McTeague. Senior petroleum analyst at Gasbuddy.com, and former Liberal MP of 18 years  Lori Ackerman, Mayor of Fort St. John, B.C. Joe Warmington, Columnist with the Toronto Sun.
