"Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental health disorder in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance — a flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations. When you have body dysmorphic disorder, you intensely focus on your appearance and body image, repeatedly checking the mirror, grooming or seeking reassurance, sometimes for many hours each day. Your perceived flaw and the repetitive behaviors cause you significant distress, and impact your ability to function in your daily life. You may seek out numerous cosmetic procedures to try to "fix" your perceived flaw. Afterward, you may feel temporary satisfaction or a reduction in your distress, but often the anxiety returns and you may resume searching for other ways to fix your perceived flaw. Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder may include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. Symptoms Signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder include: Being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can't be seen or appears minor Strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed Belief that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way or mock you Engaging in behaviors aimed at fixing or hiding the perceived flaw that are difficult to resist or control, such as frequently checking the mirror, grooming or skin picking Attempting to hide perceived flaws with styling, makeup or clothes Constantly comparing your appearance with others Frequently seeking reassurance about your appearance from others Having perfectionist tendencies Seeking cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction Avoiding social situations Preoccupation with your appearance and excessive thoughts and repetitive behaviors can be unwanted, difficult to control and so time-consuming that they can cause major distress or problems in your social life, work, school or other areas of functioning. You may excessively focus over one or more parts of your body. The feature that you focus on may change over time. The most common features people tend to fixate about include: Face, such as nose, complexion, wrinkles, acne and other blemishes Hair, such as appearance, thinning and baldness Skin and vein appearance Breast size Muscle size and tone Genitalia A preoccupation with your body build being too small or not muscular enough (muscle dysmorphia) occurs almost exclusively in males. Insight about body dysmorphic disorder varies. You may recognize that your beliefs about your perceived flaws may be excessive or not be true, or think that they probably are true, or be absolutely convinced that they're true. The more convinced you are of your beliefs, the more distress and disruption you may experience in your life. When to see a doctor Shame and embarrassment about your appearance may keep you from seeking treatment for body dysmorphic disorder. But if you have any signs or symptoms, see your primary care provider or a mental health professional. Body dysmorphic disorder usually doesn't get better on its own. If left untreated, it may get worse over time, leading to anxiety, extensive medical bills, severe depression, and even suicidal thoughts and behavior." This episode is about my personal experience in recovering from processed food addiction and understanding that it was my physiology and not personal failings that caused me to be continuously preoccupied with food. This realization came from Dr. Ted Naiman's work in highlighting the work on the protein leverage hypothesis by Simpson et al - which describes how we will overeat energy in order to meet our essential protein needs. Once I started prioritizing protein with a modified keto diet it really helped me finally feel satisfied as my essential protein needs were met, which meant the end of overeating but it also meant being able to let go of shame I had about my inability to stop thinking about food all of the time and I thought you might find it insightful or helpful too! Host Brad Kearns walks you through Chapter 1 of The Keto Reset Diet—the what, when and how of keto. First, resetting your metabolism to ditch carb dependency. Then doing some fine-tuning to improve your metabolic flexibility. Finally, a six-week immersion into nutritional ketosis. Keto is the default human genetic factory setting; we have likely spent more time in keto-mode over the past 2.5 million years, because carbohydrates were never abundant until civilized times, and often regular calorie consumption was not assured either. Brad explains that if you do the journey correctly, there will be no struggling and suffering involved, because you will be getting a nutrient-dense diet. Regarding the widely-touted 50 grams of daily gross carbohydrate intake limit for keto, you can discount the contribution of avocados, leafy greens, and other high fiber above ground vegetables, since they have minimal net carb contribution. Brad talks a bit about blood testing and the surprising phenomenon of highly fat- and keto-adapted individuals delivering low blood values even with lots of fasting and keto-aligned eating. Host Brad Kearns talks about the common mistakes and drawbacks of a shortcut approach to keto. If you are still even a bit carb dependent when attempting keto, what you will get is a flood of stress hormones in response to the sudden deprivation of your primary fuel source glucose. Lacking dietary carbs, you will commence the hallmark fight or flight process of gluconeogenesis to give your body the sugar it needs. You may even feel alert and energetic for a while from the stress hormone buzz, but when the stress response becomes exhausted, you are destined to crash and burn, featuring overeating, extra sleeping, and programmed lazy behavior to recalibrate. Also in the show, Brad rips on the concept of “cheat days.” If you are allured by the prospect of a cheat day, this suggests your approach is too regimented and unpleasant to sustain. Keto is Krazy, man! Everywhere you look there's a new book, video or Internet article about the amazing ketogenic diet and the magical results you get if you just ditch carbs! Can keto live up to the hype? Well, yes it can, but you have to do it the right way, otherwise, you’ll just be in for a stress hormone binge followed by a crash and burn. Regardless of your level of awareness about keto, this show is a great resource. I start from the beginning and describe why keto is so beneficial to health and longevity, including disease protection, improved cognitive function, , reduced inflammation and oxidative stress (these represent the essence of disease and accelerated aging), and the rapid and efficient removal of excess body fat. Next, I walk you through the comprehensive, multi-stage process as detailed in our New York Times bestseller, The Keto Reset Diet and Keto Reset Mastery Course ( https://www.primalblueprint.com/products/the-keto-reset-mastery-course?rfsn=1314253.b0f6b4 ). First, a 21-Day Metabolism Reset where you escape carbohydrate dependency and progress toward fat- and keto-adaptation. I also talk about the importance of toning down your overall exercise energy output when you start keto to prevent muscles and brain from getting into a tug-of-war for the same precious energy source of ketones when they are suddenly without their lifelong primary fuel source of glucose (from dietary carbs.) This show is deeply informative and illuminating, but always in plain talk so you can grasp the concepts with needing heavy prior knowledge. [25:47] When thinking about exercise, realize that the miles on the road or trips to the gym, though important, first think about just moving every day. [27:20] Don’t overdo it when you workout. Workouts do not need to be more than 30 minutes. [29:20] Strength training needs to be brief, intense, and explosive. [35:59] Integrate sprinting into your game. [36:59] If you have a deficiency in optimal sleep, it throws off your appetite hormones. [38:57] The number one emergency thing to do is minimize artificial light and digital stimulation after dark. [41:17] Stress management includes many healthy practices that you can train yourself to do. [43:32] Before you get started on this Keto thing, you want to see how well you’re doing without the input of a regular meal. [45:09] You want to limit your gross carb intake to 50 grams per day. [47:43] Just eat the fat you need to feel satisfied and don’t go over-consuming fat in the name of Keto. [52:57] Make it simple and functional at the onset. [54:58] If you are experiencing the Keto flu, just take a step backward and spend more time in 21-day reset mode. [56:59] You’ll feel like crap if you don’t get your sodium balance right. [01:00:44] What you are doing is you’re reclaiming your genetic ability and your genetic preference to burn fat as your primary energy source.
