Send us a textShannon Merenstein takes us on a fascinating journey through the transformative power of creativity and play in childhood education. Drawing from her rich background as an artist, educator, founder of Hatch Partners in Play, and co-author of "Collage Workshop for Kids," Shannon dismantles the myth that creativity is an innate gift rather than a muscle requiring regular exercise. What happens when we create spaces where children direct their own learning experiences? The results are nothing short of remarkable. Shannon shares stories from her PlayLab initiative, where veteran teachers were initially uncertain about stepping back from their traditional roles. They discovered something profound—children previously struggling in structured academic settings often thrive when given the freedom to engage in open-ended play. "Play gives children an opportunity to show their classroom community the best version of themselves," Shannon explains, highlighting how these experiences reveal dimensions of children's capabilities that remain hidden during traditional instruction. The conversation explores how play naturally integrates academic concepts as children create restaurant menus with pricing, write notes to friends, or test mathematical concepts through building. Shannon describes her innovative "play journaling" practice, where children reflect on their play experiences through non-assessed writing—creating a powerful longitudinal study of each child's growth. Perhaps most compelling for administrators and education stakeholders, Shannon shares evidence that children who engage in regular open-ended play with materials like magnetic tiles and blocks consistently outperform their peers on geometry assessments.Ready to transform your teaching or parenting approach? Listen to discover how creating space for creativity and play might be the most important gift you can offer the children in your life. The future of education isn't about abandoning academics—it's about finding the beautiful intersection where play enhances learning in ways traditional instruction alone cannot achieve.

Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 8 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Our first interview features Melanie Phan speaking with Rachel Savord, a former event production assistant in the deep house and disco funk music industry, and now successful Etsy shop owner and artist. Melanie and Rachel delve into the cultural implications of Rachel's work in the music industry, where they discuss the importance of learning the cultural roots of the music events she produced, and how Covid was the catalyst for the launch of Rachel's Etsy shop, which she started as a way to shift her creative energy into starting her own small business. They touch on how all of Rachel's experiences, from her International Relations studies in college, to work in the music festival industry to her current status as a small business owner and artist, relate and influence one another and how the philosophy of ‘remaining a learner' as allowed Rachel to gain a balance of happiness and success in her career choices. Charlie Molin wraps up our episode with his interview of Archie Lee Coates IV, the co-founder of multidisciplinary creative studio Playlab Inc.  Playlab is a multidisciplinary creative studio founded in 2009 by Archie and Jeff Franklin. With “no particular focus”, they explore themes using art, architecture, and graphic design to initiate ideas for themselves and others. Charlie learns about Archie's designing roots, which started in 6th grade via a summer program in Miami, and how he met his future co-founder, Jeff Franklin, studying Architecture at Virginia Tech. Archie relates how he and Franklin pursued what would eventual become Playlab Inc. over years of work and planning and the challenges of financial viability for a young studio and their efforts to keep it afloat in its early years. They end their talk with reflection on how Playlab Inc. realized they could sidestep traditional barriers to entry by having genuine conversations and building relationships instead of focusing only on the final product, noting for them, the studio is the project.

Marcie had a chat with playwright and theatre maker Joshua Maxwell about their recent play “Very Happy Children with Bright and Wonderful Futures.” The name calls back to Trump's demeaning comments regarding Greta Thunberg during a 2019 UN speech, and the play itself blends activism with performance, inspired by the Black Summer bushfires in 2019 and subsequent climate protests. Joshua speaks on what lead to the idea, the process of writing the play, how the themes became very real when holding productions, and what they hope it can achieve or people take away from it. As well as queer identity, what activism means to them, and their work as artistic director of Jopuka Productions. You can find the play published digitally via PlayLab right now! Imagine the thrill of getting to work in a creative business with no set boundaries. You form a studio that has its hand in designing incredibly diverse projects from floating swimming pools and gigantic floatable devices to museum apps and toilet paper rolls. And you do so while throwing yourself into everything with other people's trust and belief thanks to the potential they see in you, despite your lack of experience in their specific market.Today's special guest has done it for over a dozen years now. So what's it like to run a creative studio with, in his words, “no focus”? In this episode, Sam is joined by PLAYLAB, INC. co-founder Archie Lee Coates IV. Archie started the company in 2009 with his business partner Jeff Franklin. They describe it as a multidisciplinary creative studio that covers everything from arts, architecture, graphic design, and apps.Based in Los Angeles, the studio has gone from a team of two to nine and has worked over the years with a broad range of clients. Most notably, it has created immersive designs for creatives and artists like Louis Vuitton, Reese Cooper, Reuben, Selby, and Virgil Abloh, to name just a few.But the world of PLAYLAB is way larger than any one project. So today, Archie immerses you deeper into their world. He discusses the inspiration for the company, the role models who helped form its philosophy along the journey, and how he approaches being an entrepreneur in general. You'll also hear about what it's like for him to operate in opposition to the conventional wisdom about niche marketing, and discover some of the unconventional projects he and the team at PLAYLAB have undertaken since its launching. The entire episode is a must-listen! This is complicated, not linear, and honestly so personal there is no one way to do it. An amazing podcast in general, but particularly if you are grieving, is Griefcast.....Does your debt die with you in Australia? Mostly. There are a lot of variables, but yes. If you have a lot of debt and you die, as long as that debt is not in someone else’s name as well (eg. A joint loan for a mortgage or something) then it will be written off by the lender when you die after every attempt has been made to pay it off using your estate. Your estate is all of the stuff you leave behind; your house, your clothes, your stamp collection, your car, your phone, your share portfolio, etc. Here is an article which goes through it really well but focusses mostly on mortages, and here is one by Canstar which talks about credit card debt......Look I couldn’t find a good enough how-to that didn’t have a paywall or a weird site name, so here is a wikihow on how to write your own eulogy.....Class exists even when you die because there are financial hurdles with funerals. Here’s a fun little article by Budget Direct (with infographics) about the costs of funerals across burial methods and capital cities......The book I was trying to think of with the Fairy Blackstick is The Rose and The Ring by William Makepeace Thackeray. Yup that is his real name, I shit you not. OMG YOU GUYS I found a free e-book of it! Lookit!.....The quote “Don’t take life too seriously. No one gets out alive anyway.” Is actually from Sydney J. Harris......According to Beyond Blue, in any one year, 1 million Australian adults have depression. And while not all those who are depressed are suicidal, it’s very handy to know what it means, and what suicidal ideation is. This is a very handy resource that isn’t icky or wordy or boring or condescending. There are also some great mental health resources at the bottom of the page too.Want to see Steve’s show? Me too! Jeff Wirth has been a lot of things in his life: university professor, computer programmer, ballroom dancer, and clown. These days he's the wandering sage of interactive performance, leading the Interactive PlayLab which is best known for the Deep Dive think tank that created work that was both intimate and large scale at the same time. Wirth has been crisscrossing America leading workshops in interactive acting techniques and design, and after a recent stop in Los Angeles he sat down with our own Noah Nelson for a philosophical deep dive of their own. Also this week: we kick things off with an impromptu field report from The InkHole, the latest promotional pop-up from the Giant Spoon/Mycotoo team, which brings the curious into the fabulously felt world of The Happytime Murders.

After visiting the pop up Playlab and seeing the great work being done there, I was able to catch up with Emma who established and runs PlayfulAnywhere that has also been responsible for the immersive take over of the old Border’s store, and the Playbox shipping containers that seem to crop up all over the place. I believe her job title is Chief of Play. Prior to this Emma was known for running the online magazine the Culture Vulture and as an events manager for things such as the Northern Art Prize and the opening of the Howard Assembly rooms.Often it seems that play, fun, and conviviality can be quite undervalued, or even hard to achieve, when putting on or making spaces for creative activity but Emma prioritises these things above all else - building something that doesn’t necessarily even need to be understood or viewed in artistic terms, and maybe is better as a result.Playlab is open everyday 10am–4pm until 6 May at 21 New York Street, LS2 7DT, Leeds.
