Earl is thrilled to have Professor Bob Harvey back for another chat about Black History. This time, they explore the Carthaginians and the kingdom of Mala, which was situated near the Yucatan Peninsula. They also discuss how Black indigenous groups built boats and ships for traveling and discovering new lands. Professor Harvey discusses 15th-century Black resistance to the slave trade and addresses a caller's question about the reality of "40 acres and a mule." He explains that while the 15th Amendment granted voting rights to Black men, few could exercise this right or receive promised land. He notes President Lincoln's initial hesitance to support Black rights, despite later advocating for them through the Emancipation Proclamation, which aimed to weaken the South during the Civil War. In the 1800s, cotton and enslaved people were the South's most valuable assets. Professor Bob Harvey, a distinguished Black historian with impressive credentials in historical studies, engages in a compelling conversation about Black history with Earl. He emphasizes that African Americans were present long before the arrival of the English and Europeans. Notably, he points out that South America boasts the largest Black population, with Brazil standing out as the most densely populated country. Professor Harvey delves into the 15th century, highlighting how Spain and Portugal emerged as explorers, discovering new lands and subsequently enslaving individuals to labor on sugar plantations and in various agricultural sectors. He explores how Catholic influence drove people to seek religious freedom from persecution. Professor Bob Harvey discusses the Nubian descent of the original Egyptians and the forgotten aspects of that history. Professor Campbell Harvey, professor of finance at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and the inventor of the most famous recession indicator — the inverted yield curve — joins The Julia La Roche Show for a wide-ranging conversation on the economy, the Federal Reserve, and the yield curve. In this episode, Professor Harvey highlights how the Federal Reserve made things worse in 2023 with its unnecessary rate hikes. According to Professor Harvey, we're fortunate if the economy delivers slow growth this year in spite of the Fed's damaging actions. He argues that the Fed will need to undo the damage they did with immediate rate cuts no smaller than 50 basis points at the next meeting. Elsewhere, Professor Harvey shares the origin story of the inverted yield curve indicator and it's 8 for 8 track record in predicting economic recessions. Now that we're in the 9th inversion, he shares that it's way too early to call if we're in a false signal. He also makes a case that the inverted yield curve is causing slower economic growth, and that's not necessarily a bad thing because you avoid a deep recession. [S5.5 E07] The Question of Debt in Our LivesStay connected with the latest news from Politics in Motion. Join our mailing list today: https://www.politicsinmotion.orgLast week Professor Harvey pointed out that the basic means by which consumerism is developed in such a way is to be consistent with the growth of an economy based upon profit seeking was to expand indebtedness. But it turns out that the credit system and the circulation of interest-bearing capital on the development of indebtedness has another very strong role. And therefore there is a double force which is concentrating upon the credit system. And that double force is related to the fact that increasingly in the history of capital, capital has required more and more fixed capital, fixed capital within the factory in the form of machines and plant and all the rest of it, but also fixed capital of what Marx called fixed capital of an independent kind - that is fixed capital that would be used in common. Professor Harvey traces the development of fixed capital and the credit system to understand the financialization of our economy today. Join our mailing list today: https://www.politicsinmotion.orgProfessor Harvey discusses the persecution of the scholar Owen Lattimore at the hands of Joseph McCarthy. Owen Lattimore was editor of Pacific Affairs, a journal published by the Institute of Pacific Relations. Lattimore taught at John's Hopkins University from 1938 to 1963 and then from 1963 to 1970, he was the first Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Leeds in England. Professor Harvey had the opportunity to visit Lattimore in London. While doing ethnographic research in Afghanistan in 1950, Lattimore was met by the US consular official who said, you'd better rush back to the United States because Senator McCarthy has fingered you as one of "the top Russian espionage agent in the United States." He was called up in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and subjected to years of interrogation based on false charges. The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (the Senate version of HUAC), headed by Pat McCarran, came to the absurd conclusion that China was “lost” not because of Mao or because of the Chinese masses, but China was “lost” because of a small group of academics and intellectuals and State Department officials. Lattimore was red-baited and persecuted for many years. It is important to understand this history, because what we are seeing right now is a return to that paranoid style of American politics. [S5.5 E02] Anti-Capitalist Chronicles: Capitalist Social Formation vs. OUR PLANET!Stay connected with the latest news from Politics in Motion. Join our mailing list today: https://www.politicsinmotion.orgProfessor Harvey discusses the relationship between the mode of production of capital and the context of its social formation. In the previous episode, Harvey shared his analysis of the capitalist mode of production from the standpoint of the emancipated laborer. Now, he further explains the mode of production, which is what Marx calls the inner structure of capitalist society. Curiously, Marx rarely uses the term capitalism, but he does talk about capital as a mode of production. And he also talks about the social formation, which is the contextual conditions within which a mode of production operates. The analogy Professor Harvey uses here is that a mode of production is like the engine of capitalism, and it is the driving engine of the mode of production, which Marx is primarily concerned to analyze and understand. But Marx also recognizes the significance of the social formation, especially in terms of both the environmental conditions, and also the social and cultural history. Therefore, we need to have a clear analysis of the relationship between the social formation and the mode of production.David Harvey's Anti-Capitalist Chronicles is co-produced by Politics in Motion. [PNM S5 E01] Workers Unite! Emancipation from the Capitalist TotalityStay connected with the latest news from Politics in Motion. Join our mailing list today: https://www.politicsinmotion.orgIn this analysis of the capitalist totality, Professor Harvey provides a critical examination of the exploitative nature of capitalism from the perspective of the emancipated worker. The capitalist totality refers to the all-encompassing system of capitalism, which affects every aspect of modern society, including the economy, politics, culture, and even our personal lives.Using his recent book as a foundation, Professor Harvey exposes the deep-rooted inequalities and injustices that exist in the capitalist system. He highlights how workers are oppressed by capitalists who constantly seek to extract the maximum amount of labor from them while paying them as little as possible. Furthermore, he argues that this oppression stems from the inherent contradictions within capitalism, which prioritize profit over the well-being of workers.Throughout his analysis, Professor Harvey emphasizes the agency of workers in challenging and changing the conditions that oppress them. By acknowledging the oppressive nature of capitalism and the agency of workers to resist and transform it, he offers a critical perspective on the current state of the world and a path towards a more just and equitable future.David Harvey's Anti-Capitalist Chronicles is co-produced by Politics in Motion. Over the weekend reports emerged that Queens University Professor of Human Rights, Colin Harvey had seen his appointment to the Bill of Rights panel blocked by the DUP, in what can only describe as an act of political interference. So on Sunday evening we chatted with Professor Harvey to find out all about this and the ongoing intimidation he has been subjected to. Colin tells us what he feels the speculation means, how he sees Human Rights as central to society and why it must be at the heart of any Shared Future on this island. We discuss the recent incidents and what stoking tensions says about the Stormont, and British govt in Westminster. Episode 3 Aired: 9/20/2005From the Emerald Isle this tale brought to us by Kerric Harvey, professor and author, explores some of the lesser known yet nevertheless pivotal characters from the past. It is well known that history is written by the victors, however even the victors contain their own prejudices and preferences when it comes to chronicling what was. Witness how familiar the name Brian Boru is compared to that of Gormlaith. Brian has long been considered the last great high king to unite all of Ireland fighting back the Viking usurpers in the late 10th and early 11th centuries. So then who is this Gormlaith who held such political sway that she had either married, bed, or bore most of the great men and heroes of that age? What kind of power did she wield? And who would want to diminish her role in history- this enigmatic and ambitious woman of quality? But let us let Professor Harvey explain this mystery in her own radio drama entitled- "Gormlaith- Princess of Ireland." Later we'll have a conversation with Professor Harvey, listen to a sketch from the works of Bradley Thunderbird Phoenix, and of course continue our weekly serial from DreamRealm Enterprises- Robots of the Company Episode #3.Kerric HarveyConsortium ComicsMontage Radio TheatreShrink Rap RadioDream Realm Enterprises
