After the second release of preliminary election results from Multnomah County on Wednesday night, Keith Wilson maintained his lead in the mayoral race. The Oregonian has already called the race, and opponents Carmen Rubio and Rene Gonzalez have both conceded to him. Wilson is the CEO of a local trucking company and ran on a platform to end homelessness by 2026 by expanding shelter capacity and strengthening the city’s partnership with Multnomah County to tackle the crisis. Wilson joins us now to share more on his recent victory and vision for the city.
On Wednesday, three Portland Commissioners - Mingus Mapps, Rene Gonzalez and Dan Ryan - decided to pull an ordinance they had filed to end the city’s 8-year partnership with Multnomah County to fight homelessness. The decision was made as Portland is poised to elect Keith Wilson, the owner of a trucking company as its next mayor, who opposes the city leaving the Joint Office of Homeless Services. The newly elected 12-person city council, along with the new mayor, will get to decide the fate of the intergovernmental agreement with the county in just two months. In a letter she sent on election day, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson said she was ready to work with Portland’s next mayor and new Multnomah County and Portland city commissioners on “solving the most pressing and challenging issues this community will face in the coming months and years.” Chair Vega Pederson joins us to talk about how new Portland city leaders might affect the future of the Joint Office on Homeless Services.

In 2022, Portland residents voted to drastically change their form of government. This included using ranked choice voting and a 12-person city council. With the change in government, the mayor will work closely with the new city administrator to oversee the everyday functions of the city and help craft the budget, but will no longer have a vote on the city council, unless it’s to break a tie. There are 19 people running to be the city’s new mayor. “Think Out Loud” invited the four candidates with the largest number of individual donations and funds raised. Rene Gonzalez, Mingus Mapps and Carmen Rubio are current city council commissioners and Keith Wilson is the president and CEO of TITAN Freight Systems. They all join us for a debate.

Portlanders will face a large number of decisions on the ballot in November, but one of the most of important and consequential will be choosing the city's next mayor. Whoever wins will take office right when the city switches to a brand new form of government, one completely different from the one Portland has used for more than a century. The new mayor will immediately be tasked with hiring Portland's first permanent city administrator, and they'll also help set the city's agenda and set the tone for the culture of the new city government. So far, there are three leading candidates in terms of money raised, and they're all current Portland city commissioners: Rene Gonzalez, Mingus Mapps and Carmen Rubio.Gonzalez was a guest on this week's episode of "Straight Talk" to discuss how he plans to tackle Portland's challenges with crime, homelessness, addiction and ambulance response times. Public safety and livability were a key part of his campaign when he was elected to the city council in November 2022, and he said he's maintaining that focus in his mayoral campaign."We went from very safe to average overnight, and that's been brutal for Portlanders," he said. "That was a big part of our identity. You could walk to the neighborhood grocery store or to a restaurant and feel safe, that your children could bike to the park. And all of that has been implicated in recent years."

Portland city commissioner Dan Ryan has announced that he will be run for City Council this year. As a longtime resident of North Portland, Ryan said he will be aiming for one of the three seats that will represent District 2 on the expanded 12-person council that will take over city governance at the start of 2025. Ryan is the first of the city's current five council members to make a bid for a position on the new council. Fellow commissioners Mingus Mapps, Rene Gonzalez and Carmen Rubio have all announced plans to run for mayor. Current mayor Ted Wheeler has ruled out running for a third term, but has not announced any further plans. Ryan was rumored to be considering a mayoral run last fall, but said he wanted to wait a few more months to make a decision. He ultimately declared in December that he wouldn't seek the mayor's office, but he didn't rule out the possibility of a council run, declaring only that he didn't want to mount a citywide campaign in 2024.

The Portland City Council this week unanimously passed a drug criminalization ordinance crafted by Public Safety Commissioner Rene Gonzalez and Mayor Ted Wheeler. The measure bans the public use of drugs, contingent on a change in state law to allow such measures. City commissioners also voted to direct lobbyists to push for that state law change. Addressing public safety and homelessness were chief among the issues Gonzalez campaigned on. Earlier this year he made a controversial decision to prevent Portland Street Response from distributing tents and other supplies to people experiencing homelessness. The future of the popular PSR program has yet to be determined, with full funding for its ongoing operation yet to be identified. Gonzalez joins us to talk about his vision for a public safety system that serves all residents.
Voters last fall delivered a stinging rebuke of Portland's status quo and handily backed a sweeping ballot measure to reshape the city's form of government and expand the City Council from five to 12 members. The crucial, painstaking work of delivering that package of reforms is now well underway. With a forecast of near-freezing temperatures and heavy rain on the horizon, the city of Portland's homelessness first response team has been ordered to stop distributing tents to people sleeping outside. The announcement comes from Portland's newest city commissioner, Rene Gonzalez, who oversees Portland Street Response, the burgeoning first response team focused on people experiencing homelessness or mental health issues. In a press release sent Tuesday evening, Gonzalez said he has ordered all bureaus he oversees to temporarily suspend the distribution of both tents and tarps to members of the public. This includes the Portland Fire Bureau, which houses Portland Street Response. The ban is due to a number of recent tent fires, according to Gonzalez.“It has become clear that tent and tarp-related fires are a grave public safety emergency for our city,” Gonzalez said in the press release. “Unsanctioned fires put our first responders, houseless individuals, and our neighborhoods at risk.”Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople

In this 149th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. This week, we discuss certainty. How certain are you of your positions—on the efficacy of masks, SARS-CoV2 origins, mRNA vaccines, Ukraine, elections, trans, CRT, the police? Has your certainty changed over time? We discuss whether people on a particular side of many fraught issues are more likely to have adopted a position, and a level of certainty, from authorities, and never had it change. We discuss apology, and what a real apology sounds like, and how it should be received. We also ask why so many cities, and those who live in cities, are celebrating mental illness and addiction, rather than working to actually help those afflicted. Being anxious and confused doesn't mean that the rest of us should go along with your contorted worldview; in fact, it is our duty not to.*****Our sponsors:Western Razor Company: Use code DARKHORSE at www.westernrazor.com/darkhorse to get 10% off your order on excellent razors, without the hype.LMNT: Electrolyte drink mix with all the good salts, and none of the bad stuff. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - On Tuesday, July 29, the Brownsville City Commission unanimously agreed to enter into a public-private partnership with Lit Communities for the design and construction of a citywide broadband fiber network. But who are Lit Communities? The attached podcast sheds some light on the company as we interview the group's chief strategy officer, Rene Gonzalez.Gonzalez was present at the recent Broadband Signing ceremony. Those signing the agreement included Lit Communities CEO Brian Snider, Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez, and John Bruciak, the general manager of Brownsville Public Utilities Board. The network Lit Communities will build includes a 93-mile middle mile backbone with design to last mile fiber. It will connect 32 anchor institutions including city facilities, Police, Fire, EMS, and public parks.Through the agreement, Brownsville residents and business owners will have the infrastructure in place to provide a minimum broadband capacity of 100 megabits city-wide.“Today was a historic day for the City of Brownsville and one that will have a multigenerational impact. We have effectively taken the first and most important step to eliminating the digital divide in Brownsville through an innovative public-private partnership with Lit Communities and our local stakeholders. Very soon, residents will have accessible and affordable broadband right here in Brownsville,” said Mayor Mendez.Mendez said the city will be utilizing $19.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for the approved middle mile fiber network, allowing for public-private partnerships to deploy last mile services. Snider said Lit Communities will contribute an additional $70 million to execute the last mile infrastructure.“It is such an exciting day to complete this partnership and make it official. The City of Brownsville has inspired us, and we continue to see the values and beliefs that we have as a company as well. Because of that, we were able to create a unique partnership that will set the example for future municipalities across the country. While it is an exciting day, the job still isn't done, and we are now looking forward to getting engineering and construction started,” Snider said.According to a news release from the City of Brownsville, the city was, in March, named the winner in International Data Corporation's (IDC) Government Insights' Fifth Annual Smart Cities North America Awards for Digital Equity and Accessibility for its comprehensive planning efforts to increase broadband accessibility and speed. In December of 2020, Mayor Mendez was awarded the “Change Maker” award by New Century Cities for his work in addressing the digital divide in Brownsville.

According to the U.S. Census, roughly one in ten homes in America lack a broadband internet connection, and the city of Brownsville, Texas tops the list of least connected cities in the country. On this episode, we'll learn from two people on the frontlines in the battle against this digital divide. We hear from Brownsville high school teacher Mayra Delgado. After seeing her students struggle with connectivity, she co-founded a group called What the Fiber to address the problem. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with one of the people that are helping to bring broadband to Brownsville, Rene Gonzalez. Rene is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Lit Communities, a company that helps cities develop their own fiber networks instead of bringing in an outside internet service provider. This not only connects their residents and businesses but allows the city to earn money by charging Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for use of the city network. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co.
