Nature's nurturing side — disabled primates thrive in the wild with community supportSurvival of the fittest for primates in the wild often includes them going out of their way to accommodate those with physical disabilities. In a study in the American Journal of Primatology, scientists reviewed 114 studies of a wide range of non-human primates that spanned more than nine decades. Brogan Stewart, a PhD candidate from Concordia was part of the team that found that more often than not, the physical disabilities arose as a result of human activities, and in the face of those pressures, primates show a remarkable resilience in how they care for those with malformations or impairments.Beetle larvae feeding on dino feathers left signs of that relationship trapped in amberBits left behind from a beetle larvae feasting on dinosaur feathers shed by a theropod became trapped in tree resin that preserved evidence of this relationship for 105 million years. The beetle larvae is related to a beetle that's known to live in birds' nests and feed on their feathers. Ricardo Perez de la Fuente, the senior author of the study in PNAS from Oxford University Museum of Natural History, said finding dinosaur feathers is a find in itself but to find evidence of two organisms in deep time interacting is incredibly rare. Jellyfish demonstrate how it's possible to learn and remember even without a brainA jellyfish the size of a pinky nail can learn to spot and dodge obstacles using their visual system with 24 eyes but no centralized brain. By simulating their natural murky mangrove environment in a lab, scientists discovered how quickly the box jellyfish learned to maneuver around roots in their path. Jan Bielecki, a biologist at Kiel University, said their findings in the journal Current Biology suggest that learning is an integral function of neurons.Bottlenose dolphins sense their prey's electrical fields through their whisker dimplesDolphins were once thought to be acoustic specialists due to their hearing ability and how they detect prey through their reflected pings using echo-location. But when their next meal is hiding in the sand, bottlenose dolphins also seem to be able to hone in on their prey by sensing their electrical fields. Tim Hüttner, a biologist at Nuremberg Zoo, said dolphins likely use echo-location to detect from afar and electroreception to close in on their prey. His research was published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. How documenting the disappearance of the great auk led to the discovery of extinctionBefore a fateful trip in 1858 when two biologists traveled to Iceland in search of the rare penguin-like great auk, the word “extinction” had never been used to describe a species that humans wiped out of existence. After being unable to locate any living great auks, John Wolley and Alfred Newton turned their attention to documenting the demise of this flightless bird. The new book, The Last of Its Kind: The Search for the Great Auk and the Discovery of Extinction, Icelandic anthropologist Gísli Pálsson explores the case that ushered in our modern understanding of extinction. Listener questionChris Corbett from North Sydney asks: If we see the star Betelgeuse, that's 642 light years from Earth, going supernova, does that mean it might have already gone supernova? For the answer, we went to Jess McIvor, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia.

Funciona? Como é feita? Quais as boas práticas? Como engajar o leitor? Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's MondayJuly 26th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Today - DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is now considered “unlawful” according to a July 16 ruling. The ruling leaves the immigrant community in Montrose devastated and in limbo. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com. - Now, our feature story. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is now considered “unlawful” according to Texas federal Judge Andrew S. Hanen's July 16 ruling. The judge determined that former president Barack Obama exceeded his authority when he created the program by executive order in 2012. The judge also said that new application approvals are prohibited. Although he would not order the DACA program to be immediately discontinued. His logic was that DACA violated the Administrative Procedure Act. The ruling leaves the immigrant community in Montrose devastated and in limbo, according to Ricardo Perez. Perez is the executive director and co-founder of the Hispanic Affairs Project. Perez said that they're very disappointed because there are many who we call Dreamers in our communities. The Hispanic Affairs Project works with the Colorado Immigrants Rights Coalition and the Department of Justice Immigration Legal Assistance Program. These are both programs set up in the Western Slope to help community members with DACA applications and the path to citizenship. Perez said their organization supports an average of 80 applicants a year. But the way Perez sees it, the judge left the door open for DACA renewals. Not to be confused with DREAM - DACA determined that certain individuals who immigrated to the United States as children could request consideration of deferred action for two years. DACA recipients became eligible for work permits and to reside in the United States legally during that period. DACA applicants must meet several guidelines, including having moved to the U.S. before turning 15. They also need a clean criminal record. Perez and The Hispanic Affairs Project are already working to coordinate actions against the ruling. The organization plans to request action from state senators to support DACA. Perez added that many applicants began applying when they were 16. They have since graduated high school, been to college, joined the workforce and started a family. He said - this is their home. They're active community members participating in our society in many ways. Perez also explained that this news is very painful, but this is not the end. To stay up to date on this story visit us at montrosepress.com - Before we go… Rosie Glenn's heart is happiest when colors are floating across her canvas. She's fascinated by the idea of leaving behind a legacy and the ability of humans to create something out of nothing. The artist found her love for art as a young child. She then earned her GED, attended Arapahoe Community College and went on to study jewelry and metalwork at Metro State University. She transplanted to Montrose in 2017 with her family, where she is now a self-proclaimed “domestic engineer” and a homeschooling teacher. When she's not teaching her 6-year-old son, Glenn is in her home studio creating. With her love of colors, it's no wonder that the artist is drawn to the abstract style of arts. Whether Glenn is tie-dyeing, sewing, working with leather, beading, cooking or baking or acrylic painting - she's happy. But it's her work in metal-smithing and jewelry making that really drives her. Glenn's current painting phase indulges her passion for the multitude of art practices she enjoys executing, including glitter, color and texture in her art. The artist is bringing her “playful yet serious” style of art to Mosaic. She'll be the gallery's featured artist for July. Check it out! That's all for today, thank you for listening! Good morning I'm subbing in today! Welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday April 7th and we're here with local news, events, announcements, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Born in El Salvador, Ricardo Perez knows all too well what it means to help a fellow person. Starting his work as a community organizer in 1987, Perez visited rural communities suffering from the Salvadoran Civil War. Later he worked with refugees. In 1992 Perez moved to Guatemala and worked with Guatemalan refugees. Working with nonprofits and the local government, Perez eventually helped in the return of refugees to specific areas in El Salvador at the end of the civil war. It was this extensive experience helped spark the rise of the Hispanic Affairs Project. Established in 2005 - it now serves western Colorado. In 2009 Perez was nominated to become the executive director for the organization. Around that same time the organization became a 501c3 nonprofit. In 12 years since, the nonprofit has led a mission that works to support the social development of the Hispanic immigrant community through a focus on leadership formation, community organizing and advocacy. Today, HAP provides legal assistance, sexual and domestic violence awareness. They also work to combat human trafficking and champion pro immigrant policies. Over the years, the nonprofit's work has provided immigration legal assistance to nearly 1,000 families. The organization celebrated a victory on the federal level against the Department of Labor to increase the salary, and add labor protections, for foreign workers in the US sheep industry. This was an incredible victory. Perez said that one of their missions is to make sure that new people are having a sense of belonging. Especially since over the last four years it has been very hard for the immigrant community. Perez emphasizes that there's still work to be done. He says there is still a lack of policies to support immigrant integration in Colorado. But that could change. In the 2021 legislative session, there are more than a dozen pro immigrant bills that have the potential to shift the way organizations like HAP could help the Hispanic community. During a recent Zoom meeting Western Slope leaders gathered to discuss how the area can come back, and come back stronger than ever from the pandemic. The meeting was a part of Colorado's Build Back Stronger series. Lauren Larson, director of the governor's office of state planning and budgeting for Colorado, said the state will receive about $14 billion from the bipartisan coronavirus relief package. It'll receive another $27 billion from the American Rescue Plan Act. The federal relief is heading to several different areas. Stimulus checks, unemployment, child care, housing, restaurants, and also a child tax credit expansion. And with these funds come some additional goals. Those include creating jobs, growing businesses, and meeting workforce challenges. Larson noted that there is flexibility with stimulus proposals. So how can we use these funds to build back stronger? Governor Jared Polis noted that the success of how well Colorado deploys these funds is going to determine how successful the recovery is. Ricardo Perez, the executive director for the Hispanic Affairs Project in Montrose, was also at the meeting. Perez discussed how the lack of paid sick leave, and health insurance, impacted agriculture workers. And many of those workers are Hispanic immigrants. He said that elected officials need to go deeper in understanding the social and economic dynamics focused on the workforce, wages, and labor conditions. This will provide a better picture of where to invest. Perez emphasized that the federal stimulus package is a great opportunity to bring balance by supporting the workforce with better wages and labor conditions in rural industries. He noted that Colorado can do better when it comes to reducing the poverty that many full-time workers and their families are facing. To Perez, that's what it means to make Colorado stronger. The state will continue its series through the month of April, and has now heard from representatives on the Western Slope, as well as those in southern and northern Colorado. Nicole Ann Koch is a unique, happy, adolescent teenager who seems to have the world by the tail. She has a 4.03 GPA and is often playful . . . but when it comes time to get serious, her demeanor changes. Her easy going, graceful manner disappears when she's asked about her approach to high school varsity wrestling. She told us that she wants to win every time she steps out on the mat. And she believes she can. Her voice is full of confidence and assurance. Nicole is a returning three-time state wrestling champion with one more year of eligibility . . . She could be a four-time state champion. Since 1936 there have been 29 four-time Colorado champions. They've all been in the boys divisions. Nicole is on track to be number 30. She's not over confident but understands her ability to perform well at a high level. That confidence is backed by winning seven national competitions. One of those competitions was the prestigious Rocky Mountain Nationals where she was voted the outstanding wrestler. In September, Nicole and the family will head to Colorado Springs where she will be given, yet another award. The Colorado Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame will honor her with the 2021 Girls High School Wrestler of the Year award. A fitting distinction for the unique, young lady from Delta. On this episode of the Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Ricardo Perez – Military Veteran, Entrepreneur and Aspiring Author cavnessHR website: https://www.cavnessHR.com Jason's email: jasoncavness@cavnessHR.com @cavnessHR across social media @jasoncavnessHR across social media We talk about the following His fascination with plants. Doing things that don't scale. OMX Analytics Being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Ricardo's Bio Ricardo grew up in a small town called Freer in South Texas, practically raised himself, barely graduated high school in 2004, and ultimately joined the Army in 2006. He served as an infantryman in a brand- new unit on Fort Lewis here in Washington, the Brigade 2nd Infantry Division, and was one of the first privates in the brigade. The unit deployed in 2009 as the first Stryker brigade to Afghanistan, and upon return, the unit deactivated. Ricardo voluntarily withdrew from a medical discharge and ETS'd in October 2010. Using his GI Bill benefits, Ricardo graduated from Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2016 with his degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry and moved back here to Washington State not long after graduating. From there, things in his life took a twist, and now, he's a recent graduate of The University of Washington's Master of Science in Entrepreneurship program offered by Foster Business School. Number one, you have to get uncomfortable. That was one thing that army taught me. The army makes you uncomfortable in many different ways and you grow as a result of it. You grow as a person, you grow as a soldier. You grow as a leader, get uncomfortable. It's going to help you grow and get to school. Whether you can afford to pay for classes and actually get a degree. If you can't, there are a billion YouTube videos from Ivy League schools about business and everything you could ever want to learn. I highly recommend when Coronavirus is all over, go to your actual local universities and go to their business departments and just start talking to people.
