How could this be? Ever since I was a kid I loved looking at the stars and astronomy was one of my favorite subjects in school. I've always asked questions like, “Why are we here? Where did we come from, and what's the point of all of this?” So many of these questions have begun to be answered through my study of Vedic Astrology, the ancient form of astrology from India. In Vedic astrology, our chart is a printout of our karma, the lessons our soul came to experience in this life. We bring with us our beneficial and challenging karmas to be lived out and worked through. Our soul has different reasons for incarnating - for example Dharma, Artha (Money, and how we earn it), Kama (Passion, desire) and Moksha (liberation). Tonoght's Jazz Show celebrates the Birthday Anniversary of a trumpet player who gave a whole generation of younger players the basis for their style and approach to the trumpet/ Even though Clifford Brown died in a car crash at age 25 on June 26, 1956, his trumpet work is still the standard for most young players to strive to attain. Tonight's Jazz Feature spotlights the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet at it's best that was done in the optimum conditions of the recording studio during the time the Quintet was performing at New York's leading Jazz club, Basin Street in February 1956. The Quintet had jelled to perfection and their newest member, the great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins and Brown made a coherent and perfectly blended front line. The rest of the bad consisted of Richard Powell on piano, George Morrow on bass and Rollins, Brown and drum great Max Roach. This recording marks the last studio performance of the Roach/Brown Quintet at their best with great arrangements by their pianist Richard Powell. This band was one of the very finest in their day and their music still remains fresh and exciting. Happy Birthday Anniversary to Clifford Benjamin Brown (Oct 30, 1930/ June 26,1956).

Tonight`s Jazz Feature can be deemed a classic. It was the second album under Sonny Rollins` name since his return to the Jazz scene in late 1955 as a new member of the legendary band, the Max Roach/Clifford Brown Quintet. It was decided by Rollins and Prestige Records owner that Sonny could record with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group with musical choices by Rollins and with Rollins` name on the album title. Hence ``Sonny Rollins Plus 4``. Sonny picked 3 standard tunes that were not part of the Roach/Brown repertoire and wrote two original compositions that entered into that band`s repertoire. ``Valse Hot`` and ``Pent-Up House`` were the two intriguing Rollins` originals and the other 3 standards were quite obscure as Rollins always liked odd and lesser known tunes. Sad to say this turned out to be the very last studio recording by the Roach/Brown band. It was recorded on March 22, 1956 and Brown and pianist Richard Powell were killed in an auto crash in June of 1956. The trauma reverberated in the Jazz community as much as Charlie Parker`s death the year before. The people involved here are Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Clifford Brown on trumpet, Richie Powell on piano, George Morrow on bass and Max Roach on drums. A classic Jazz Feature tonight!

It's late one night in America, and two men are chasing tweakers from a local meth den.  One escapee, James, gets away.  The other, a girl, is set on fire by the men before they drive off.  Meanwhile, local police chief Daniel Carter is asleep on the job, again, when he spots James crawling out of the woods, and transports him to the nearest medical facility, Marsh General, where he estranged wife Allison works as a nurse.  The hospital is on the verge of closing after a fire took out most of it, and they're working with a skeleton crew:  besides Allison, there are two nurses, Kim and Beverly; one doctor, the mysterious Richard Powell; and only two patients, Cliff and pregnant Maggie.  It's upon Daniel's arrival that the world tilts on its axis:  strange robe-clad figures emerge from the forest, Beverly is caught performing impromptu surgery on Cliff, and Maggie goes into labor.  What happens from here defies logic, description and expectation, but as Daniel and Allison determine to face down the wickedness that comes their way, they soon find themselves enmeshed in a plot that goes way beyond medical science, and maybe, beyond the reaches of time and space itself. Today our Jazz Feature celebrates the Birthday of one of the pioneers of Modern Jazz and it's leading drummer, Maxwell Lemuel Roach. Max Roach was born in North Carolina on Jan 10, 1924 and raised in New York. He lived to 83, passing away on August 16,2007. Max had formed one of the leading bands of the 1950's with trumpeter Clifford Brown. They toured and recorded some iconic records but tragedy struck in June of 1956 and Brown and the band's pianist/arranger Richard Powell died in a car accident on their way to a gig. After a suitable period of mourning and a commitment by the band's saxophone star, Sonny Rollins and the band's bassist George Morrow, Roach reformed the band with stellar trumpeter Kenny Dorham and pianist Ray Bryant. Max Roach's first album after the tragedy was this one, "Max Roach Plus Four". It is a wonderful date and demonstrates the new found chemistry and cohesion in this band. Six tunes are featured, 2 originals by Roach and one by George Russell and one by Dizzy Gillespie and a ballad. Happy Birthday Mr. Roach!

In this episode, I'm so happy to be back with you solo and I have a great topic to share: Wabi Sabi: Embracing Imperfect Beauty in Your Life. Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese term that grew out of a Japanese aesthetic for imperfect beauty or the "Zen of Things." I define (or try to anyway) the meaning of wabi-sabi and how you can embrace it in your daily life to overcome the paralysis of perfectionism and pursue your goals and dreams. I quote and share throughout the episode, Richard Powell, author of Wabi-Sabi Simple. He said, "Wabi-Sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: Nothing lasts. Nothing is finished. Nothing is perfect. I repeat these three realities often throughout the episode and share examples. I also leave you with 6 practical ways you can practice wabi-sabi in your daily living. Book Source: Koren, Leonard. Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers. Imperfect Publishing. Please take the time to leave a review, like, rate, subscribe and download, and share with others in your network. I really want to expand my reach to others who will benefit from the insight and inspiration I share through Your Aha! Life. Thank you so much. The murder of David O’Hearn in Wollongong in 1998 was described by season police as the most gruesome they had ever come across, with body parts strewn around the house. Within days, former Mayor Frank Arkell was also killed, and then Mark Valera - known as the Butcher of Wollongong - confessed. Jessie Donker suffered at the hands of her violent partner for years, until she could take it no longer, and she aimed her car at Richard Powell and killed him. The sentencing judge - at times wiping away tears - described her case as one that required mercy.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. It’s been over half a year but finally a second volume of Bits, Pieces, and Body Parts arrives. Yet with this edition we have a bit of a change. Unlike the prior episode, Episode 014, where your cohosts were live discussing genre news and reviewing a film immediately after viewing it at the local theater, this new volume is a mish mash of various subjects and topics. First off cohosts Gordon and Philip discuss some of your favorite horror icons as was the case in Episode 038, Iconic Characters in Horror. Here a short conversation on Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees commences before moving on to a detailed talk of the somewhat overlooked Tony Todd larger than life monster, The Candyman. Next, fantasy and zombie author Elaine Isaak and thriller author K.D. Mason are interviewed, discussing their novels and what’s coming next. Both will autograph any copies of their novels that are purchased from their websites. Continuing, Thomas Newman, the director of the zombie film Bong of the Dead and the upcoming zombie western Deadsville, is interviewed where he discusses the home video release of his debut film (February 21st , 2012) and an exciting synopsis of his highly anticipated follow up. Afterwards author Charles Day chats about his debut novel, The Legend of the Pumpkin Thief, which brings the spirit of Halloween together with the nostalgia of a Steven Spielberg movie. Lastly, cohost Eric and Philip interview the owners of Fatal Pictures, Zach Green and Richard Powell, specifically discussing their half hour psychological horror films Worm (to become a feature length production) and Familiar, to be given its world premier at Toronto Frightfest March 2nd, 2012. Familiar will be introduced by Fangoria magazine and the presentation will let the audience meet and greet the film makers. Once again, join Dark Discussions for another episode of genre fare. A significant recording in the long distinguished history of Modern Jazz pioneer, drummer extraordinaire Max Roach. Today, January 10 is Mr. Roach's Birthday and The Jazz Show celebrates this event by presenting the album "Max Roach Plus Four" recorded in September 1956.. This was Max's fist recording after the tragic end to the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. Brown and the band's pianist, Richard Powell, were killed in a car accident in June 26, 1956. After a period of recovery from this trauma which also affected the whole Jazz community, Mr. Roach reformed the band under his name and kept tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins and bassist George Morrow. Rollins was finally being acknowledged as the leading new voice of the tenor saxophone and Morrow was one of the strongest bassists in Jazz and one who could keep up with Mr. Roach and the furious tempos that he loved. Trumpeter Kenny Dorham was the very worthy replacement for Clifford Brown and he shines on this album. Ray Bryant, from Philadelphia was a great replacement for Powell and was the first of many fine pianists in this band until Mr. Roach stopped using piano players in the late 50's. The album is inspired and energetic and is a great milestone in the recorded legacy of Mr. Max Roach. Happy Birthday Max!

Rogue's Gallery came to the Mutual network on September 27, 1945 with Dick Powell portraying Richard Rogue, a private detective who invariably ended up getting knocked out each week and spending his dream time in acerbic conversation with his subconscious self, Eugor. Rogue's Gallery was, in a sense, Dick Powell's rehearsal for Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Powell played private detective Richard Rogue, who trailed luscious blondes, protected witness, and did whatever else detectives do to make a living. It was a good series, though not destined to make much of a mark. Under the capable direction of Dee Englebach and accompanied by the music of Leith Stevens, Powell floated through his lines with the help of such competents as Lou Merrill, Gerald Mohr, Gloria Blondell, Tony Barrett, and Lurene Tuttle. Peter Leeds played Rogue's friend Eugor, an obscure play on names with Eugor spelling Rogue backwards. The gimmick in Rogue's Gallery was the presence of an alter ego, "Eugor," who arrived in the middle of the show to give Rogue enough information for his final deduction. Eugor was a state of mind, achieved when Rogue was knocked unconcious. Eugor would appear cackling like the host of Hermit's Cave and imparted some vital information the hero had overlooked. Rogue would then awaken with a vague idea of what to do next. Rogue's Gallery also starred different actors as Rogue, in later incarnations of the series, but Richard Powell was the most popular. This series preceded Richard Powell's most famous series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Rogue trailed lovely blondes and protected witnesses in the new tough guy persona of Dick Powell. This was the transition series for Powell in his quest to be recognized as an actor rather than a singer. It had some of the same cute elements that would make Richard Diamond a high spot four years later. During the summer of 1946, the show was billed as Bandwagon Mysteries, with a tip of the hat to the sponsor. In the summer of 1947, it was again revived on NBC Sundays for Fitch, with Barry Sullivan in the title role. In 1950 the character again turned up in a two-year sustainer on the ABC Wednesday-night schedule. Chester Morris played the lead. Chester Morris was the original Boston Blackie.
