Rick Olderman, MSPT comes back to discuss his new book Pain Patterns: Why You Are in Pain and How to Stop It. He helps us understand how he connected the dots between the following concepts to create a healing treatment plan for chronic pain. The Connection Between Movement, Fascia and Reflexes in Pain: Most people don't realize that their daily movement habits—how they walk, sit, or stand—is connected to strong lines of fascia (connective tissue) running through the body and deep reflex patterns we're born with. "Functional Linking" – The Link Between Past Injuries and Current Pain: Many of us have old injuries that we may have forgotten but still seem to haunt us. I've introduced the concept of "Functional Linking," which explains how these past injuries can silently contribute to current pain, offering new paths to healing. A Potential Pathway by which Psychological Trauma or Stressors Might Manifest as Physical Pain: This has to do with a little known type of fascia that is triggered to contract by hormone-like molecules released during stress or trauma. To learn more go to rickolderman.com, follow him on Instagram @fixingyouclinic, and subscribe to his YouTube @RickOldermanPTCheck out Rick's previous episode #162 Visit ConfidenceThroughHealth.com to find discounts to some of our favorite products.Follow me via All In Health and Wellness on Facebook or Instagram.Find my books on Amazon: No More Sugar Coating: Finding Your Happiness in a Crowded World and Confidence Through Health: Live the Healthy Lifestyle God DesignedProduction credit: Social Media Cowboys

Check Out Rick's Newest Pain Pattern Book ------------------------ Chronic or difficult pain is often treated using what our guest calls “component thinking” which means practitioners are simply targeting a small part of the body–the tissues that are damaged or irritated. The problem with component thinking is that it works best for simple pain issues like strains, tears, or broken bones. Component thinking approaches begin to fail when pain doesn't go away after this natural healing process should have occurred and turns into a more complex, chronic condition. This indicates a “systems problem” – meaning there is a system of stressors acting on your tissues, irritating or interrupting this natural process of healing. One thing is for sure - if you're still in pain after three months, you have a system problem. Rick, our guest today, uses a systems approach to help individuals fix chronic pain... we will learn how to get out of 'individual silo thinking' and pull multiple systems together for optimal relief from PAIN. --------------------------------------------------- Rick Olderman, physical therapist who specializes in helping people with difficult pain problems. Rick talks about his own approach and interviews other health practitioners looking for new answers to old problems. Solving The Pain Puzzle - Cases from 25 years as a physical therapist https://www.amazon.com/Solving-Pain-Puzzle-Physical-Therapist/dp/1476690693 In this book, the author discusses his ground-breaking approach to treating chronic musculoskeletal pain, drawn from decades in his Denver, Colorado orthopedic physical therapy clinic. Using a holistic yet evidence-based strategy to solving the body's pain mysteries, he provides insight and hope to those seeking answers, arguing that the key is to recognize that the location of pain has little to do with where the pain actually originates. The book takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery, revealing unique body connections at the root of chronic pain, and includes real patient stories about how this approach helped with everything from sciatica to migraines.----------------------------------------- ALL ABOUT LINDSEY ... Rick Olderman (rickolderman.com) is a licensed physical therapist, author, and creator of the Fixing You Method. His latest book is titled “Pain Patterns: Why You Are In Pain and How To Stop It” and will be available on Amazon on November 11th, 2024. Rick has a much different, (and a much more comprehensive) approach to healing injuries than most. This is all laid out in detail in Rick's latest book, and it's what we chatted about in this episode. The three main pillars are the connection between movement, fascia and reflexes in pain and how these all contribute to creating, and healing injuries. Functional linking is the connection between all your past injuries and poor movement patterns and your current pain. And lastly the connection between psychological trauma or stress and pain. All of this combined contributes to pain in various ways. Understanding it allows you to identify it, and then work to correct or improve it to ultimately help you get out of pain and back to living your best life as soon as possible. If you've ever been injured, or experience chronic pain, this episode is for you. This is a special replay of an episode from the REJUVENAGING WITH DR. RON KAISER podcast Hall of Fame, first posted on November 1st 2022According to the CDC, in 2016, 20.4% of the US population reported experiencing some type of chronic pain. As one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care, chronic pain has been known to have a domino-like effect, leading to other problems such as depression, opioid dependency, and an overall decrease in quality of life. So, if you are part of the 20.4%, what can be done to manage your pain? One great solution is physical therapy. My guest today, Rick Olderman, is a physical therapist, author, trainer, and pilates instructor. Pain Relief: Understanding the Shoulder Blade's Role in Neck Pain and Headaches Click Here for a FREE 15 min Zoom Consultation With Brad: Rick Olderman - Fixing You Physical Therpay www.RickOlderman.com In this podcast episode, Brad Williams from Over 40 Fitness Hacks interviews Rick Olderman, an expert in pain relief and biomechanics. They delve into upper body issues, focusing on neck pain leading to headaches and the role of the shoulder girdle system in this discomfort. Rick explains that while most bones are long, the pelvis and shoulder blade are exceptions, and they discuss how these bones affect overall body mechanics. Rick emphasizes that the shoulder blade's correct resting and movement positions are vital for upper body mechanics. Dysfunction in the shoulder blade can transmit force into the neck bones, causing pain. He introduces the "armpit test," a simple assessment to determine if the shoulder blade is the source of neck pain or headaches. Rick provides step-by-step instructions, including lifting the armpits gently to relieve tension, often resulting in increased head movement. The conversation continues with insights into common posture misconceptions, like the belief that squeezing the shoulder blades down and back creates good posture. Rick clarifies that the shoulder blades are not meant for posture and explains a more effective approach using core engagement to support posture. He demonstrates how improper posture strategies contribute to shoulder blade dysfunction and offers a method to decouple the relationship between shoulder tension and core activation. Rick highlights the importance of ergonomic adjustments to complement posture changes and provides a comprehensive solution for chronic shoulder dysfunction, neck pain, and headaches. Complexities of Chronic Back Pain: A Deep Dive into Brad Williams' Journey Click Here for a FREE 15 min Zoom Consultation With Brad: Rick Olderman - Fixing You Physical Therpay www.RickOlderman.com In this podcast episode, Brad Williams from Over 40 Fitness Hacks interviews Rick Olderman about his personal experience and insights related to chronic back pain and sciatic nerve issues. Brad shares his own journey of dealing with back pain over the past few years, starting from a weightlifting mishap that led to a herniated disc and excruciating sciatic pain. He describes how he underwent two surgeries and the subsequent struggles in his recovery process. Rick Olderman, the guest expert, breaks down Brad's case and offers valuable insights. Rick explains that Brad's back pain and sciatic issues are not merely caused by the herniated disc, but rather a complex interplay of various factors. These include tight thigh muscles, imbalanced forces in his pelvis, and asymmetric habits of movement. Rick emphasizes that while Brad's pain has subsided, the underlying issues remain, and these patterns likely contributed to the recurrence of his herniation. Rick delves into the biomechanics involved, such as how tight thigh muscles can pull the pelvis into an arched position, causing strain on the lower back and sciatic nerve. He introduces a simple thigh stretch technique that can provide relief by counteracting these imbalances. The stretch involves lying on a firm surface and allowing one leg to gently drop down while maintaining the opposite leg's position, which helps alleviate the forces causing pain. Throughout the discussion, Rick offers valuable insights into the complexities of chronic back pain and emphasizes the importance of addressing underlying patterns rather than just treating the symptoms. He provides a holistic perspective on Brad's experience and offers practical advice for managing and preventing future episodes of pain. The episode concludes with Brad expressing his intent to try the suggested thigh stretch and share the results in a subsequent episode. Secrets of Chronic Pain: A Holistic Approach with a Physical Therapist Click Here for a FREE 15 min Zoom Consultation With Brad: Rick Olderman - Fixing You Physical Therpay www.RickOlderman.com In this podcast episode, Brad Williams of "Over 40 Fitness Hacks" interviews Rick Olderman, a physical therapist with a unique perspective on chronic pain and injuries. Rick shares his journey from struggling to help clients with chronic pain in his early career to developing a holistic approach to addressing these issues. He explains how he transitioned from traditional methods of diagnosing and treating damaged tissues to focusing on understanding why tissues become damaged in the first place. Rick's approach highlights the importance of viewing the body as a system and how various factors contribute to chronic pain. He discusses the limitations of component-based treatments in the medical field and how his method shifts the focus to understanding the body's systemic issues. He describes a simple but revealing test for back pain that helps individuals identify their patterns of dysfunction. By evaluating the difference in discomfort between lying with legs straight versus knees bent, he demonstrates how common habits like standing and walking can contribute to pain. Rick emphasizes that his method empowers individuals to take control of their healing process through understanding their body's mechanics and making conscious changes to their habits. Rick also mentions his "Fixing You" series of books and downloadable home programs that provide valuable insights and practical solutions for addressing chronic pain issues. The podcast concludes with a discussion about the universality of Rick's approach and how it's changing the way people approach and solve their chronic pain problems. In this interview, I have a thought-provoking conversation with Rick Olderman, orthopedic physical therapist specializing in chronic pain and nagging injuries that "seem to be incapable" of healing.A huge motivating factor behind Rick's search for answers was his own chronic back pain, and after years in clinic but unable to fully help patients, he realized that the fundamental and crucial element connecting movement, structure, and pain was missing from the general conventional physical therapy practice. With additional training and knowledge in Pilates, personal training, and yoga--yet still coming up short--Rick went on to dedicate the last two decades towards pioneering this systems-based research. His affordable at-home programs provide a much deeper understanding of how unhelpful lifestyle habits and movement patterns can break down muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone, which in turn creates pain. He's written several books, including his newest, "Solving the Pain Puzzle," and Rick holds a very stern belief that given the right tools, we absolutely have the ability to heal chronic pain.Rick and I talk about everything from the faulty belief systems we have about our bodies, we discuss why this systems-based approach is not addressed in PT school, he educates us on the patterns of dysfunction, goes through some interactive exercises with us, and so much more. This episode is truly supercharged with detailed information, and provides much hope to those who've felt stuck because of their pain.Rick's Website: www.rickolderman.comRick's Latest Book, SOLVING THE PAIN PUZZLE: https://www.amazon.com/Solving-Pain-Puzzle-Physical-Therapist/dp/1476690693Back Pain Program: https://fixingyoumethod.com/lp/backRick on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/RickOldermanPTRick on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fixingyouclinic/Rick on Twitter: https://twitter.com/FixingYouClinicRick on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FixingYouMethodRink on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rickolderman/Show Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/well.with.vanessa/Vanessa Lopez on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegiftofgoods/Vanessa's Linktree (Discounts etc.): https://linktr.ee/thegiftofgoodsEmail: intentionallywellpodcast@gmail.comHelp Abused and Homeless Animals In Need CUDDLY helps give animals a healthy life and a loving home. Our traditional healthcare systems offer amazing options for acute pain and injury, but for long-term, chronic, and subclinical pain, you're mostly on your own. It's more common than not for someone with chronic lower back or knee pain to have absolutely no idea what is wrong or how to fix it, and scans and doctors' appointments often leave you with no clarity or guidance. In an attempt to fix ourselves, we stretch, strengthen, buy different shoes, and adjust our workstations. Sometimes it works, but sometimes we need more help. On this week's podcast, we meet a physical therapist who focuses on standing posture and walking gait as a functional fix to main chronic pain ailments. Listen and learn: Why atrophied gluteus maximus muscles are often a key culprit in joint pain Why it can be helpful to avoid locking your knees while standing How an overemphasis on movement can sometimes lead to overlooking incorrect movement Links Rick's Website ABOUT OUR GUEST Rick is a physical therapist who found traditional therapy effective for acute pain but lacking for chronic pain and nagging injuries. He spent over 20 years developing his own approach and subsequently authored the Fixing You book series. Like the Show? Leave us a review Check out our YouTube channel Visit www.yogabody.com
