On the show this week, I met up with Angi Campos of Egoscue Method San Francisco. I had read about Egoscue Method almost 10 years prior in the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. It was recommended by a friend to help treat my low back pain. I found the book fascinating, but the exercises seemed too simple and required 45 minutes of my time, and I just felt like I couldn't commit to that amount of time. Angi helped dispel all those myths and showed me how to correctly implement the Egoscue Method into my busy life.This episode is phenomenal, because we also film an almost 40 minute session of me going thru a typical Egoscue analysis and first time session. Angi used a camera and special computer program to help analyze my posture from four different views. From there, the computer correctly can help diagnose what exercises are needed to help rebalance my body. The photos were to say the least, eye opening. I couldn't believe the mechanical faults I was displaying. If you watch my session, you'll see that I ask Angi, “Based on my photos where do you think I experience pain.” She was able to say, “You probably experience right knee pain.” She was 100% right. I couldn't believe it.Then she walked analyzed my gait and how I walk. By making one simple adjustment, my gait improved 75% better, I was walking lighter (not so heavy like a thud thud sound every time I step). She then had me touch my toes, which I couldn't do without falling over. After a two minute isometric hold, I was touching my toes again. It was incredible!The idea behind Egoscue is restoring the posture and getting to the root cause of your problems to help extinguish pain that you might feel in your low back, hip, or knees (as they ware the most common). On the show this week, I met up with Angi Campos of Egoscue Method San Francisco. I had read about Egoscue Method almost 10 years prior in the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. It was recommended by a friend to help treat my low back pain. I found the book fascinating, but the exercises seemed too simple and required 45 minutes of my time, and I just felt like I couldn't commit to that amount of time. Angi helped dispel all those myths and showed me how to correctly implement the Egoscue Method into my busy life.This episode is phenomenal, because we also film an almost 40 minute session of me going thru a typical Egoscue analysis and first time session. Angi used a camera and special computer program to help analyze my posture from four different views. From there, the computer correctly can help diagnose what exercises are needed to help rebalance my body. The photos were to say the least, eye opening. I couldn't believe the mechanical faults I was displaying. If you watch my session, you'll see that I ask Angi, “Based on my photos where do you think I experience pain.” She was able to say, “You probably experience right knee pain.” She was 100% right. I couldn't believe it.Then she walked analyzed my gait and how I walk. By making one simple adjustment, my gait improved 75% better, I was walking lighter (not so heavy like a thud thud sound every time I step). She then had me touch my toes, which I couldn't do without falling over. After a two minute isometric hold, I was touching my toes again. It was incredible!The idea behind Egoscue is restoring the posture and getting to the root cause of your problems to help extinguish pain that you might feel in your low back, hip, or knees (as they ware the most common). Dr. Pedre found that there is a way to relax his body through meditation and yoga. Pedre wanted to hack his body through a combination of breathing and guided imagery. He is not the type to shy away from his comfort zone. Despite being afraid of needles, Dr. Pedre found the strength to get his vaccines. He knew he was ready for medical school. The body has an ability to conquer fears. [09:30] The Consequences of Stress on the Body Stress increases gut permeability and affects the gut microbiome. If you are in a fight or flight, you can’t digest well. Stress won’t let you break down protein properly. If you aren’t breaking down protein, then you won’t be happy and enjoying life. People struggle on keto because they don’t have the bile to break down the fat. Relaxing will be essential. “You have to rest to digest.” -Dr. Pedre Digestion begins in the mouth. Water with lemon in the morning will help kickstart the system. Chewing will also help with digestion. [13:50] Why Dr. Pedre Focuses on the Gut He wanted to have an impact on more than people in his practice. Pedre became a gut expert without really trying. There is an endless group of patients who didn’t know about their gut health. Change your diet and use the right supplements to fix your gut. There is an epidemic of gut disease – the gut is the foundation. If the gut can’t absorb the nutrients properly, then our bodies won’t be able to function properly. Pedre’s book comes from the heart. It has to be permeable to get the right nutrients through. Your gut can increase and decrease permeability. If your gut is more permeable, then the connections between the cells start to loosen up. Then, things can get through that aren’t meant to get through – like endotoxins. Why are we so interested in leaky gut? It leads to inflammation. Inflammation is the root of disease in the body. It can affect anyone from normal to someone with celiac disease. You might get hives, joint inflammation, and joint pain. Sometimes you won’t have any gut complaints whatsoever. There is probably a huge percentage of people with leaky gut. It is becoming a worldwide problem because of the exposure to pesticides and antibiotics. We are treating too many things with antibiotics. Instead of fighting a bug, we should be fortifying the terrain. [36:30] Foods That Cause Leaky Gut Gluten and dairy are part of the problem. Soy and corn are also problem foods. GMO foods are also giant issues for our guts. Some people are sensitive to artificial sweeteners. Julie Daniluk, RHN, is a leading nutritionist and has been featured on The Marilyn Denis Show several times to share nutritional tips and tricks and healthy meal ideas. For twelve years, she was a co-operative owner and the Chief in-store Nutritionist for one of Canada's largest health food stores, The Big Carrot Natural Food Market. Julie’s passion for nutrition and conscious eating started when she was about seven years old when her mother realized that Julie had severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Eliminating Inflammation in the Body and ways that we can Identify it: Inflammation is the body’s emergency healing response system, so we don’t want to fully demonize inflammation because it's what heals you when you have an infection. We need inflammation so that our immune system is aware of when and where to send in help. Inflammation, however, can become a negative thing when it’s locked in for too long and goes from acute inflammation to chronic inflammation. The key here is to learn how to switch this off before it causes a lot of damage. Know that every single relationship is changeable, including your relationship to food. When you feed yourself healing food, it’s a loving act. Just start with what you can put into your body and by making a positive choice, it will start a domino effect of feeling good and continuing to make better choices. You can find your way through something, the stress comes from the change, and once you adapt to that change (the only constant in life) it can become something that improves the quality of your life. If you want anything in your life, it all starts with the gateway of your health because once your health is sorted, everything is possible. His work contributed to “The World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program,” which is ongoing at Mount Sinai Hospital in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine. This program is an environmental medicine research project primarily focused on studying respiratory and psychiatric disease as a consequence of the disaster. After this incredible experience, Dr. Pedre sought to bring his dream of the ideal medical practice to fruition. Convinced that the ideal method of practicing medicine combines the strengths of both Eastern and Western methodology, Dr. Pedre attended a yoga teacher-training in 2002 and underwent additional specialty training in Medical Acupuncture in 2003-4. With these trainings, he acquired knowledge of Eastern philosophy, meditation and the ancient healing arts in order to offer the broadest perspective and choices to his patients. Upon completion, Dr. Pedre could not find his dream in any existing practice, so instead of settling for less, he made his vision a reality and created Pedre Integrative Health in July 2004. Dr. Pedre is a sought-after speaker and writer on sustainable health, prevention, and integrative and functional medicine. Here are a couple of questions that we get all the time… How long will it take to fix my problem? When can I go back to what I was doing before the pain started? The truth is… the truth will set you free! Recovery, maintenance, and self-discovery are a lifelong journey – and not to be stopped when you hit a certain level. If you stop – you regress – period! In comparison to a car – you think you have been in cruise control and living your life – but in reality you have been in neutral and heading down a mountain road with no brakes. You had to jerk the car off the road – and then hit into some barriers. Now your car is damaged. Putting it back on the road and continuing the coast downhill will leave you broken down on the side of the road for good – unless you do something different, and do it different forever. The process of building your physical strength and health is no different than building a career or another type of great achievement. A plan + daily execution / the course of time = results! Chronic pain is not a disease that needs to be treated – its a matter of cause and effect. Take control of your body!
