Scott Anthony Barlow: Happen to Your Career Scott Anthony Barlow is CEO of Happen To Your Career and host of the Happen to Your Career podcast. His team and him are focused on helping people find the work they love. He's also the author of the book, Happen to Your Career: An Unconventional Approach to Career Change and Meaningful Work*. You've been laid off, or someone close to you is navigating that reality right now. A lot of the first things we think to do after a layoff are wrong. In this episode, Scott and I explore what to avoid…and more importantly, where to begin anew. Key Points Most people underestimate the time it takes to mean a transition to the next, right position. Submitting tons of applications, networking everywhere, and telling everyone that you're looking feels productive, but is often either incomplete or a waste of time. Give yourself the space to grieve. Spend time with the people who care about you. This didn't happen to you, it happened for you. Whether objectively true or not, this mindset will help you be intentional about next actions. Hyperfocus your targeting by creating a master resume and also considering backdoors to opportunities. Decide when to hire help by using math – how much will expertise help speed up the process and/or help you land a higher salary? Scott Anthony Barlow: Happen to Your Career Scott Anthony Barlow wants you to find work you love. He is CEO of Happen To Your Career and host of the Happen to Your Career podcast, which has been listened to over 3 million times across 159 countries and is the largest career change podcast in the world. As a former HR leader, Scott has interviewed over two thousand people for jobs and completely rejects the way most organizations choose to do work. He's a nerd for self development, human behavior, and ice hockey. He's the author of the book Happen to Your Career: An Unconventional Approach to Career Change and Meaningful Work*. In this conversation, Scott and I discuss the assumptions that many of us bring to finding career happiness — and where those assumptions might lead us astray. We also explore in detail the process that Scott and his team use with clients: career experimenting. In addition, Scott and I share how we've used experimenting in our own careers to align with meaning. Key Points People assume that you start with clarity. In actuality, you start with declaring priorities, which is what eventually creates clarity. Taking vacation or an extended break from work is important for many reasons, but it's not often the activity that creates clarity. Movement and experimenting is the way you move from declaring your priorities to creating clarity. Use career experiments as a way to begin surfacing interests and relationships that will help you to find clarity. Leaders should open the door to career experimentation to support employees in developing themselves inside the organization — or potentially moving onto other opportunities. In today's episode, I am talking how to change career and get a six-figure salary increase in the process with my guest Scott Barlow. We discuss Scott's very impactful career journey. After taking a role that seemed perfect to everyone else but was far from perfect from him, Scott spent 10 years researching what it takes to build fulfilling careers. Scott shares those insights through his podcast, coaching programs and more recently through his "Happen To Your Career" book. What You Will Learn:1. Create the ideal career profile - When you identify what you want and what you don't want in your career, you can then align those desires with what you value. An aligned career will lead to an increased level of output.2. Changing career and increase your salary - It is possible to make a career change and keep the same salary. How you enter the career change is very important. Disregard any organisations that are not offering you what you want. Once you found an organisation you want to work for, get to a situation where the organisation loves you or can't imagine not having you on the team. Then, you are in a good place to start your negotiation.3. Effectively negotiate - Gather information, build relationships and partner with them so that you can come up with a solution that is a win/win for both sides. Mark Sieverkropp is todays guest joining us on the show, and is someone who now falls into a very select band of guests. This is the third time that he has appeared, after first back in 2014 with his business partner Scott Barlow on episode 37. If you go back and listen to episode 37, he spoke with passion and more than a touch of humour as to how they got the “Happen To Your Career” online business going. This was why he was still working in the corporate world in a job he hated whilst starting to make inroads into his new life. Well he did that, and when he appeared next he had another leg into the entrepreneurial world and was sharing with us all, the steps we can take, and skills we need to explode our network of friends, colleagues and clients sky-high and build our own business. As the saying goes “No Man is an island” and with the worldwide web literally falling over with potential prospects, money making opportunities and chances to strike up a conversation are needed more than ever, which is where his talent lie. Now with his new book "Find Your 20" focusing in on the 80/20 principle and how we can all find time, enjoyment and even more income in our business by being strategic and streamlined as he finally found where he really wants to be? Is this where he looks and thinks "wow, without all the other dots there is no way that i could have brought this to the world? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Mark Sieverkropp.

Every superhero has an origin story. When you look at Iron Man (you can substitute your favorite superhero), what you see when he is fighting Thanos in Avengers: Endgame is not his whole story. He started as a very different person - a self-indulgent billionaire playboy - and had a journey of change and growth to become the hero we love. On the podcast today, we’ll be looking at the origin story of our company, Happen To Your Career, and pulling out the lessons you can learn as you start your career coaching business.

Here at Happen To Your Career we often create episodes based on questions we get from our audience. However there’s one question I never ever get. How can I remove distraction? Distraction from achieving what’s most important to me? Distraction that takes me away from who I want to be spending my time with? And yet that’s what stops so many of us from what we really want to accomplish. Who better to answer this question than the person who wrote "Indistractable: How to control your attention and choose your life." I read it and loved it so much that I bought it for my entire team for Christmas. Here to teach us the difference between traction and distraction is author Nir Eyal. Everyday I’m in conversations with aspiring, new or even established coaches. And as you can imagine it’s a lot of conversations, and time and time again I see the same… well…. The same 7 things pop up that restrict these folks from becoming amazing coaches, trip people up from starting and having profitable coaching business. We see these time and time again. Phillip, our Director of Client Success here at Happen To Your Career, joins us today to talk about these 7 things that trip up new coaches.
“My overall definition of success is helping other people succeed.” Allison Curbow has staked this claim for herself. Her journey to become a career coach started only 18 months ago. Allison went from being a person with a background that was scattered between different industries, and who lived in an environment where entrepreneurship was considered a scary and alien entity. “I was in Oil and Gas industry, and I was in sales industry, and home construction, and wielding, and procurement – all over the board. It drove me crazy.” Having liked some things in every job she had taken up, but not being a fan of everything in any one of those, she set out to find something that satisfied her and suited her. “I didn’t even know what it would require me to decide who I wanna be. I was just blindly walking along, without knowing that I had to decide in myself what kind of life I wanted. I didn’t realize how much I was following other people’s perceptions of what I should do.” 18 months ago, she had no clue that career coaching was going to be the career path for her, but she knew that something was missing. She found the Happen To Your Career podcast, and joined Career Change Bootcamp shortly afterwards. She later heard about the first cohort of our Professional Career Coach Training and Certification program. Intrigued, she joined the live webinar and was hooked. Allison joined that first cohort of PCC, learning so much about how to become a career coach. She not only works as a career coach, she is now also on the Happen To Your Career team.
“Now looking back at it. I never really asked myself the questions of whether I wanted to to do this. It is just normal. Many of us do that.” That’s what Michal Balass had said when I asked her where her career started. She went on to explain that she spent years getting her Doctorate and when it came time to get a job she did it without thinking… because that’s what you do! It is normal. Unfortunately doing things the normal way without question put Michal in the same place many others are: In a job that isn’t a great fit and doesn’t particularly line up with what you want out of life! Michal tolerated it for years. We have talked with dozens of people on the podcast that we have personally worked with to make these changes. But one thing we haven’t really shown you is the fact that change isn’t just a one-time event. As we continue to learn about ourselves and as we grow, our lives change. This is often in the form of changes in family (having more kids, kids growing up), moving to a different house or city, or developing new skills. This growth also results in changes in your goals and desires. You begin to see a bigger and better picture of what you want to do in your life. Over the next several months, we are going to be bringing some past guests back onto the podcast to catch up with where they are now and how things have changed since we last had them on the podcast. So this week, we are bringing Michal Balass back onto the podcast. Tomorrow, I’m going to share the recent conversation I had with her; but to help us understand where she is now, today we’re going to hear her story from the last time she was on the show.

As kids, we all have dreams and aspirations for what we want to do when we grow up. However, as we get older, we tend to put down our dreams to pursue “reality” - or what we perceive is reality. Those dreams we had no longer fit into what we consider realistic. Years ago when I first started Happen To Your Career, my good friend Mark and I created an 8-Day mini-course to help people begin to figure out what they really wanted to be doing for their career and their life. We’ve now had over 25,000 people go through that mini-course. One of the exercises in that course involves declaring 3 wildly unrealistic things you want to do, be or become these could be occupations, jobs, roles, whatever you wanted, Sky’s the limit. The only rule is that it has to be wildly unrealistic. We started getting thousands of responses emailed to us and there was something interesting that we noticed right away. They’re all big goals sure, but what else? None of them are actually impossible or unachievable. What does this tell us? It means that the things we believe to be wildly unrealistic are only unrealistic because we believe them to be. It’s about the story that we tell ourselves. How do people actually accomplish wildly unrealistic goals especially when you have reality standing in your way, like a full time job or obligations like kids that like to eat, or saving for their college. Or the simple fact that you have only so much energy in a single day before you pass out? Reality. We all have our current reality. This might come from obligations, parents, kids, work, serving on that board that you agreed to back before you realized how much time it was going to take, yes it’s for a good cause but maybe you didn’t actually think it would be an additional 20 hours a month. Whatever your reality is. All of us have it. The question becomes: How do you accomplish career and life goals that you might consider to be wildly unrealistic when “reality” is always pressing on us? When you set out to achieve wildly unrealistic goals you can always assume the path you follow will be the one less taken. This is, of course, also true with wildly unrealistic career changes!

Welcome to the first episode of How to Become a Career Coach. I’m Scott Anthony Barlow and I started Happen To Your Career in 2012 because I wanted to help people make big career changes, advance their careers, learn how take control of their life and work, but most of all to help people find and do work that makes them more happy more often and uses what we call their signature strengths Since that time, we’ve been able to help many thousands of people make changes that not only impacted their careers and their income, but helped to radically change their lives. I haven’t done this by myself. Along the way, I’ve trained others how to be career coaches as well. We’ve done this by creating a Professional Career coaching Training and certification program to help give people additional training and support as they got started as career coaches. We created this podcast to showcase how you can get started too in Career Coaching or even determine if it’s right for you! Our plan is for this to be a multi-season podcast. This first season is going to be full of experienced career coaches sharing their story and lessons. Our goal is to help you get a realistic picture of what it’s like to be career coach and how you can get started. As we bring these experts on, we’ll ask them questions like: What prompted you make the decision to become a career coach? What qualifies you to be a career coach? What qualifications do you need to become a career coach? How did you overcome this? What were the biggest tools or resources to help you get started? How did you know it was time to make the leap? (scared or don’t know how to get clients) What gave you the confidence to become a career coach? How did you get your first clients? If you had 3 months to start your business and get into career coaching instead of the months or years it would take-- what would you do? Let me give you a glimpse into what a day in the life of a career coach actually looks like. Then you can see what it’s really like inside a successful coaching business during the first year I was full time as a career coach. That year we brought in $153,502 (keep in mind there are expenses in running a business so not all of this is profit). Later on I brought other coaches into the business and started doing much less of the career coaching myself. DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FULL TIME CAREER COACH I personally love this stuff. It’s fun for me. I’ve helped many coaches grow a practice of their own that also love it, but that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. It truly takes the type of person that is intuitive, enjoys having continuous conversations about careers and life. Also someone cares enough about other people to go the extra mile to help them make sure they get the results they want. Now here’s something that’s counterintuitive! It’s actually a good “sign” that you might be the type of person who would be successful by being a career coach if you’re a little bit scared about whether or not you can deliver the results that you would want for your clients - Great Career Coaches think about and obsess over that stuff! Also if you are willing to go the extra mile for people even though you’re nervous about whether or not you can deliver! (Sometimes I still have that feeling to this day because I badly want the people we work with to have an amazing experience!) People who wouldn’t make great coaches aren’t even thinking about that sort of thing!

The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change
Scott Barlow struggled to land on a major that fit in college. He just never felt like he knew what he wanted to do. It wasn't until he was fired from his first job, which he hated, that he really began trying to find something that was a good fit for him. Scott found his way into HR and eventually discovered both a knack for and interest in helping people answer the same kinds of questions that he struggled with back in college. Today Scott and the team at Happen To Your Career help people identify how they want to be spending their time, what they love to do that they have the potential to be great at and how they can transition that into their career. In this episode, Scott shares why it's a process of continuous iteration and how those iterations have played out in his own life. What you will learn in this episode: What Scott does and how he helps people Scott's backstory and how his goals have changed over time The importance of paying attention to what is working and what questions people are always asking you How to know you're on the right path even when people tell you they don't understand what you're doing Why Scott believes you should build feedback and evaluation loops into your life on a regular basis What the puzzle method is and how it can help you change career The power of prioritizing what's most valuable to you The reason you should identify your anti-strengths as well as your strengths The common misconceptions people have about the career change process and why you should take the long view How Scott actually made his own career transition from job to entrepreneur Show notes at http://themeaningmovement.com/scottbarlow
Jobs are made, Jobs are given, But the best Jobs dont come easy. My guest on todays episode of the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who like a select band of guests have decided to return again and join up more dots. Yes, back on episode 37 of Join Up Dots, when the show was just a baby, and I was finding my feet, he came on the show with his business partner of the time Mark Sieverkropp. They were building the online career advice platform Happen To Your Career, and in that discussion spoke about the hustle, early mornings, and desire that it takes to bootstrap something and take it out to the world. Happen To Your Career, is a place that is built with the owners desire, and passions being its ideal avatar. You can see that the concept would have been something that our guest would have been looking for, so he created it himself. As he says “I have always had an unusual outlook on careers. My wife Alyssa, who I met in high school, knows this to be true. I have left what others considered “good jobs” turned down job offers other people would love and any time I have wanted to make more income have simply figured out a plan and acted upon it. I have to be doing something I am excited about to be happy. Having had 8 positions in the last 10 years (including successfully self employed) has caused me to have many experiences in a short period of time.” I have owned a successful business in contracting, led others as a people and human resources professional, coached business owners and leaders to success, and helped many people develop their careers along the way. I have worked a variety of industries including: manufacturing, retail, government, food, construction and more. Everywhere I went I saw people struggling to figure out what they want to do and how to get there.” So has he got there himself. Is the platform he created truly what he wants, or is it still work in development? Like most things created by a desire to help the world will it ever be truly realised? Well lets find, as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Scott Barlow. Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Scott such as: How he would love to spend sometime with Tony Hsieh, and is inspired by the big dreams and big actions that he demonstrates everyday. How difficult it is to start a business with your wife, even though you can pay them less than anyone else you could meet. Why the world is fascinated with the huge success of others and care little about the twenty years of struggle that have led to that point. And lastly…. How he recalls the struggles he had as a young man, that caused him to tackle them head-on to allow a starting point to his dreams.

Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Do you know what is going to make you happy and fulfilled in your next role? On today’s bonus episode of Find Your Dream Job, Scott Barlow, Founder of Happen to Your Career and host of the Happen to Your Career Podcast, identifies the four key traits that lead to career happiness. His ultimate goal is to help you find those Ah Ha moments, so you can take control of your career journey and begin living A life.. that is.. unapologetically you! HAPPEN TO YOUR CAREER - FIGURE IT OUT The Figure It Out course is for anyone who is struggling in their career and is not sure where to start or feels a calling to do something different but doesn't yet know what that is. Scott explains The Figure It Out methodology by comparing it to building a puzzle. Just like a puzzle, in order to figure out your career direction you first need to start with the corner pieces, or as Scott calls them your signature strengths. There are many ways you can discover your strengths. The StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment is just one. You may remember my conversation with Lisa Cummings, a Gallup Certified Strengths coach, on the importance of understanding your strengths. Scott agrees which is why he makes your strengths the corner pieces in your career puzzle. Once you've identified your corner pieces, the next step in the process is to build out your frame. This part, in my opinion, is the hardest one and it's one we will all struggle with because it requires us to take an inventory of our lives for maybe the first time. The email course provides you with several exercises designed to help you walk through and prioritize all aspects of your life including areas such as your environment, your finances, family, personal growth and even your health. Scott explains during the show how all of these areas may overlap today but by prioritizing them, you begin to turn them into puzzles pieces that fit together in a way to build the complete picture. The reason this step is so difficult is because it requires you to make decisions and for many of us decisions don't come easy. However, is we really want to make a difference in our lives and our careers, decisions are exactly what we need to make. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” The same is true in our careers, but how many of you reading this can answer the question, “What do you want out of life and your career?” If you find yourself struggling to answer this question, Scott's course is for you. My guest entrepreneur on todays episode of the Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who like a select band of guests have decided to return again and join up more dots. Yes, back on episode 37 of Join Up Dots, when the show was just a baby, and I was finding my feet, he came on the show with his business partner of the time Mark Sieverkropp. And wasnt I glad that he said yes, as in the first show we discussed how they were building the online career advice platform Happen To Your Career, and in that discussion spoke about the hustle, early mornings, and desire that it takes to bootstrap something and take it out to the world. Happen To Your Career, is a place that is built with the owners desire, and passions being its idea avatar. You can see that the concept would have been something that our guest would have been looking for, so he created it himself. As he says "I have always had an unusual outlook on careers. My wife Alyssa, who I met in high school, knows this to be true. I have left what others considered “good jobs” turned down job offers other people would love and any time I have wanted to make more income have simply figured out a plan and acted upon it. I have to be doing something I am excited about to be happy. Having had 8 positions in the last 10 years (including successfully self employed) has caused me to have many experiences in a short period of time." I have owned a successful business in contracting, led others as a people and human resources professional, coached business owners and leaders to success, and helped many people develop their careers along the way. I have worked a variety of industries including: manufacturing, retail, government, food, construction and more. Everywhere I went I saw people struggling to figure out what they want to do and how to get there." So has he got there himself. Is the platform he created truly what he wants, or is it still work in development? Like most things created by a desire to help the world will it ever be truly realised? Well lets find, as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only career expert Mr Scott Barlow.

Mark Sieverkropp is a good friend of mine. We’ve been interacting on Twitter and social media. We’ve had a blast getting to know each other. One of the things I really like about Mark is his ability for networking and follow up with people, and being proactive about his follow up strategies. I think a lot of people miss the mark in their networking or when they are meeting other people because they don’t do appropriate follow up. Mark is going to talk to us through some good ways that we can put networking and follow up into our procedures and make sure we are building on those connections we’ve made either through social media, the people we meet at networking events, or out and about. It’s a great interview, enjoy! Mark Sieverkropp is a Podcaster, blogger, author, entrepreneur, connector, leader, consultant and speaker. He is the author of Project: Success, which climbed to #3 in the Self-Help category in the Amazon Kindle Store. He is also co-host of the Happen To Your Career Podcast, which was a New & Noteworthy Podcast in the Career section of iTunes. Mark is passionate about connecting with others, finding ways to add value to them and helping other people do the same.
Our guests today are the powerhouses behind my favourite podcast Happen To Your Career. However in this case, the podcast is just a small part of what is a passion filled centre of resource for all of us who are looking for a change in our career. They quite simply believe that it is our their unique path in life to ensure that we all fill our days with work that delights us. So how have they done this? Well of course, they have a passion for the task, and they also have been in jobs and positions that have filled them with dread. Coming home exhausted, hating their bosses and seeing very little of their families they knew that they had to do something. And we are glad that they have because without guys like this in the world, providing support and encouragement, helping with decisions so many of us would be in similar daily situations. So lets bring onto the show to start joining up the dots of their lives, Mr Scott Barlow and Mr Mark Sieverkropp.

In this episode, I interview Scott Anthony Barlow of Happen To Your Career. I was so pumped to have Scott on the show because we have been friends for a while now and I love the growth that I have seen in him. What would you tell your younger self? You need to have more […]
When most people think of their career, they think of their job. A place where they go everyday because they have to, not necessarily because they want to. Back in 2005, this was me. I thought that you choose your degree and work really hard through College and go out into the workforce and then you things get awesome! Turns out almost nobody has that experience, even after you get 10-15 years into your career less than 13% of people around the world are truly enamored with what they do for work. Yes that means that according to Gallup organization nearly 87% of people would not describe their current work as “Deeply Satisfying” or “Highly Engaging”. Translation: Chances are really high that If you didn’t need to make an income, You definitely wouldn’t spend your time where you’re at right now. That’s exactly where I was, too, all those years ago. Not only was my job a bad fit for me, but my 2 hour a day anxiety ridden commutes left me nearly 50 pounds overweight, not being very nice to my wife Alyssa, and feeling like there had to be a better way to do life and work. I spent the next decade learning everything I could about how people who love their work do differently. Especially those high achievers who are enamored with their work and get paid very very well for it. It turns out that most of what you think you know about what makes people happy at work and how people find a career that fits them, is counterintuitive or just plain wrong. You can always go over to happentoyourcareer.com and find all of our podcasts and resources in one place.
