Conversations about mental health need to be in the forefront of our lives, and this episode with my man, Darryll Stinson, is the perfect example of their impact and the power of vulnerability. Darryll was a D1 athlete who was destined for the NFL, but when he injured his back his life took a different path. Addiction and suicidal thoughts took over and he nearly ended his life. In this episode, he shares an incredible story of how his mom saved his life and how he navigated (and continues to navigate) his mental health journey to serve others. We talk about the power of vulnerability and checking our ego, and he shares story after story that will draw you in and make you think. You're not going to want to miss this powerful episode.   About the Guest:  Darryll Stinson is a former Division I athlete, author, two-time TEDx speaker, and founder of Second Chance Athletes. After going from suicidal to successful, Darryll uses his experience to help heart-centered leaders find their unique leadership style and strength that align with their highest purpose. Darryll has mentored and taught athletes, entrepreneurs, religious and business leaders, youth groups, and many more. When he is not working, Darryll enjoys spending time with his wife and three beautiful daughters. #girldad Fun Fact: (As a full-grown young man) Darryll, an elite athlete who would later be on track to join the NFL, was ranked below multiple three-year-olds in a YMCA swim class. ; )   Connect with Darryll and learn more: WEBSITES: http://www.DarryllStinson.com (www.DarryllStinson.com) http://www.SecondChanceAthletes.com (www.SecondChanceAthletes.com) SOCIAL: https://www.instagram.com/stinsonspeaks/ (https://www.instagram.com/stinsonspeaks/) https://www.facebook.com/stinsonspeaks/ (https://www.facebook.com/stinsonspeaks/) https://www.linkedin.com/in/athlete-transition-mentalhealth-career-coaching (https://www.linkedin.com/in/athlete-transition-mentalhealth-career-coaching) BOOK: “Who Am I After Sports?” : An Athlete's Roadmap to Discover New Purpose and Live Fulfilled https://www.amazon.com/Who-Am-After-Sports-%20%20Fulfilled/dp/1647464803/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VQH7HL0M6R9O&keywords=who+am+i+after+sports+darryll+stinson&qid=1621368786&sprefix=who+am+i+after+spor%2Caps%2C181&sr=8-1 (Find on Amazon) About the Host:  Friends! In today's episode, our guest is Darryll Stinson, a former athlete, now a speaker, a speaking coach as well. He's a two-time TEDx speaker and founder of second chance athletes. He now helps and gives athletes a roadmap to discover their new purpose and living a fulfilled life.  [2:06] Why should we listen to you? I think the best people to listen to are people who value life. Every moment of life, I feel like that's where the greatest wisdom comes from. And as a survivor, I always tell people I'm living the life that I try to end. So every day is truly a gift to me. I don't waste days. I have a deep appreciation for life and an understanding of an emotional spectrum, having gone from the height of being an elite athlete to the low of being in a depressed state.  [3:18] What is it you actually do in the world? I help athletes transition out of sports, specifically help them grieve it. An athlete needs time to process, to grieve, especially the ones who feel like they got taken advantage of their coaches. [4:10] And then I'm personally passionate about helping people share their stories, building their speaker business, like if you have a good mission and a story, and you just don't know the business side of speaking, being able to elevate that, the more visibility, the greater the impact. [5:08] How did you get to the point of saying, this is the darkest parts of my soul, the hardest things I've experienced and I'm going to go out into the world and tell people about it. I actually had to have an identity shift to be able to share because I hated the way that I sound, I hated the way that I talked, the way I looked, I hated my voice. I hated how it sounded. And I was not very vocal about my story, not because I was ashamed of the depression, but because I just didn't like myself. People kept saying, you got to share your story. And I started to do it very timidly. But when you show up timidly, you have fewer results, then you feel bad about the results you didn't get and then you feel more insecure.  And so I was going through that cycle and one day I'm up sharing my story, the mental health thing, I survived suicide, have this big shift in a psychiatric unit. I put my faith in Christ and I just shifted powerfully into this new identity. [7:10] It's not about me. It's about who I can help. It's not about being impressive. It's about being helpful. And that was the moment I'm like I have to shift from being a performer, to being a resource. That put a fire inside of me that made me go like more people have to heal, hear the real and the raw of my story, because that's how we can make the biggest impact. [8:04] As you build this thing, what do you hope happens?  For our organization, second chance athletes, we want to create a three-month experience where instead of getting thrust into a new world, you have an incubator where you can go for three months and have no living expenses. No responsibilities and just focus on you, pivoting, deciding what you want to do, healing and grieving, and building camaraderie. And then you shift into that new world with so much power and authority and confidence. [11:32] What would be the best chunk of wisdom to move through and elevate past these moments of identity loss? Process before you proceed. Unprocessed pain is ill process pain. Typically when we go through experiences that have a lot of meaning and emotion in them and we just move to the next experience and we don't process it, we think that we just keep it moving, we're being high achievers. But in reality, we start to make ill process conclusions about ourselves, about others, about the world that really limit the amount of love and light we can bring into the world. [15:52] What do you find are some of the things that you really wish for your daughters or maybe conversations you have with them that you think other people don't have but maybe should. One of the things that I'm very passionate about my daughters and continuing the legacy is I want them and us as a family to be known for the way we love and for the way we give.  [18:34] What are some of the lessons that you've learned that you find are hard to get your daughter's listening to? Patience is one of the hardest things. We're in such a rush that we missed the now. So today you can enjoy the day, you can learn and love lessons from today. That's the hardest thing to get my daughter and people to grasp because we're just such in a rush for the next.  [20:56] When it comes to the speakers you work with, are you built around, like have dialed in scripting structure or you let the heart flow? Preparation is important especially when you want to be a paid speaker. But the two things that I really focus on that I think are unique to space, in general, is number one purpose. So I have a 22 lesson course that I require my clients to go through. And it's all purpose discovery stuff that took me five years to learn.  [22:58] And then the other thing is personality. And this is what you're describing as free-flowing.  [30:29] What promise did God make to the world when he created you? What people get when they get me is more love and more resourcefulness. I think all roads lead to God. So whenever we all have our functions, the way that we do is supposed to him, but my uniqueness is my ability to love and connect with people. Key Quotes: [2:10-2:16] “I think the best people to listen to are people who value life.” [5:47-5:51] When you show up timidly, you have fewer results.” [11:42-11:50] “Process before you proceed. Unprocessed pain is ill process pain.” [12:40] “The worst thing in life is not failure. It's actually being successful at the wrong thing.” [19:01-19:05] “The process is not a means to an end. It's a gift in itself.” [19:37-19:42] “To embrace the process and enjoy where you are is one of the hardest things to get people to.” [28:39-28:43] “You should never lose someone you love over over your pride, but you should lose your pride over someone.”

Darryll Stinson is a husband, father, former D1 athlete, motivational speaker, and founder of Second Chance Athletes. At a young age, Darryll had to take care of his younger sisters because his father was fairly absent in his life. Through custody battles and being teased at school, Darryll found sports which then became his identity. After his career in sports ended, Darryll discovered his passion for helping former athletes find their identity after sports. It's very common for athletes to use the sport that they play as a form of identity. However, Darryll is an advocate of identifying oneself with values, morals, or things you're passionate about. After his mentor showed him this technique, he has been able to show others how to do the same.  Darryll reminds us that rejection can be used to thrust you into success. No one wants to be rejected, especially men. They even try to go out of their way to be accepted and receive affirmation. However, when we get rejected in life, it always points us in another direction that we never would have thought if we hadn't been rejected. "When you feel that moment of rejection, process that moment and make a better conclusion." Instead of feeling inadequate or like the world is out to get you, recognize that it may be the other person's insecurities that are driving their decision. Once you realize this, you can step back and come to a better conclusion that will leave you feeling content and secure in yourself.  For the show notes and exclusive links mentioned in this episode go to https://gooddadproject.com/you-are-more-than-what-you-see/ ———— Join the Free Dad Edge Facebook Group at gooddadproject.com/group. Today our expert guest is Darryll Stinson, a thought leader on athletic transition, a dynamic TEDx speaker, pastor, and certified John Maxwell coach. He shares his life experience with addition, mental illness, and suicide and how those experiences impacted his life. Darryll played defensive end at Central Michigan University from 2008-2011, where he helped his team win a MAC championship. He later went on to found Second Change Athletes, a holistic athletic transition company that gives athletes a second chance to succeed at life without the demands of sports. While at Central as a freshman, Darryll was trying to impress the upperclassmen by squatting—which he was not supposed to be doing due to a back issue—and he felt a sharp pain go through his body. He knew that something was wrong. He kept up the tough guy act and didn't find out for three months that he had pinched a nerve in his back, which resulted in emergency surgery. After the surgery, he had the opportunity to focus on his education while still honoring his scholarship. Instead, because football was his whole life, he signed a liability waiver and joined up with the team again, and he put his body through two years of drug addiction and health care manipulation in order to numb himself enough to be able to play. The only way he could pay for all of this out of pocket was by selling drugs. Senior year, the coaches noticed something was going on and they kicked him off the team. Darryll realized he wasn't prepared for life after sports. The moment he was not a part of that team, his phone stopped ringing. It felt as if he didn't matter at all. On top of that, his girlfriend of four years left him. This led to suicidal thoughts and an attempted overdose. It is only through the love of his family that he is still here today, and now he's passing that support on to others who need a reminder about their self-worth. From this experience, Darryll founded Second Chance Athletes. He went on a journey to discover meaning, and, through a lot of work, he came to a point where he realized that he loved his life, and he wouldn't trade it for a multi-million dollar athletic contract because it was what he was supposed to be doing. When he looked around at his former athlete friends, he realized they still talked about the sport as if they were still playing it. Their lives were in the past. He analyzed how he got to the life that he loves and how he can apply that to others, and he came up with a five-step roadmap, the Athlete Transition Roadmap:  Accept Believe Discover Pursue Persist   In his new book, “Who Am I After Sports?,” Darryll pours everything he has learned about developing a life you love and moving forward. It's full of stories and best practices for identity sculpting and transformation.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Everything you need you already have inside of you. You're just developing it. Reading doesn't give you something that you don't have, it only develops what you already have inside of you. IF you have big dreams, big plans, great desires, and you think that you're not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, know that that is a lie, and the truth is that you have everything that you need to do everything that you're called to do. So go do it.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. On his journey, Darryll Stinson learned the power of positivity as a way to defeat despair. Now Darryll Stinson is sharing his stories and lessons with the world to help others on their path from pain to potential. Darryll Stinson is a guest on the Digital Hospitality podcast, where the inspirational leader talked with host Shawn Walchef about pulling himself up out of darkness and finding light to guide him. For years, Darryll Stinson believed lies rooted in half-truths that he would never have a happy future and that he was not worthy of love. Thankfully, times have changed. Practicing positive self-talk, going to therapy and unlocking others has inspired Darryll Stinson to start the When I Said YES!!! Podcast and Second Chance Athletes organization. Darryll's story as a former D1 athlete and suicide survivor is one of rebirth and inspiration. It’s also a vital tale about the importance of positive self-worth and practicing self-care. “As people we value others more than we value ourselves,” notes Darryll Stinson in his interview on Digital Hospitality with podcast host Shawn Walchef. “They're worth my time. They're worth my attention. I'm not worth the investment. I'm not worth the time. I'm not worth the self-care. I don't deserve a massage on a beach. They deserve it. I'm lesser than them." "We've spent too much time comparing ourselves instead of loving ourselves. We’ve just got to love ourselves and it's fine because that is how we love others.” Learn More Online at the Digital Hospitality Blog.   From Pain to Potential featuring Darryll Stinson | Digital Hospitality Let us know what you think of this Digital Hospitality podcast episode and how we at Cali BBQ Media can help you on your own digital journey. To me, diversity is not a strategy. It's a lifestyle. And it's not a lifestyle I grew up with. I grew up very isolated. I grew up very sheltered in a sense from racial ethnicity and diversity."   Sports was Freedom — [24:16] "Sports gave me the freedom to not have to choose between white and blacks because they didn't care if I went to the bonfire or the basement party as long as I was scoring points, as long as we were winning games."   Process your Pain — [27:15] "This is why it's important to go back and process this stuff, because unprocessed pain, unprocessed rejection becomes ill-processed pain and rejection. Meaning that we don't want to think about this stuff because we want to avoid it. We think that by not thinking about it, it's not affecting our life, when in reality we're making inaccurate conclusions about our pain. And we're taking that belief system into our current life."   Strength to Continue — [30:44] "It actually takes more strength to keep going when nothing in you feels like keep going, than it does to quit. I want people to see those who are struggling with depression and anxiety as like the same way we view the scene in Rocky, where he just keeps getting back up."   The Goal of Life — [56:38] "The goal of life and the goal of service and the goal of everything is to be generous, to give everything you got and everything you are to the world. The more we give to the world, the more we receive from the world."   ***   About Darryll Stinson:   Darryll Stinson is a former Division 1 athlete, TEDx speaker, author, and suicide survivor. Stepping past rejection and into a life aligned with God, passion, and purpose is a story so many of us can relate to. I’m joined by Darryll Stinson, entrepreneur, pastor, and speaker, to talk about how a childhood full of rejection fuelled him to become who he is now.   About Darryll Stinson Darryll Stinson helps outcasts, forgotten athletes, and the down-and-outs turn their rejections into success. He’s an entrepreneur, pastor, speaker, and most importantly a suicide survivor.  Darryll played defensive end at Central Michigan University from 2008-2011. He attempted to take his life in 2011 due to a severe career-ending back injury. Through a life-changing experience at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, Darryll got a second chance and came to believe that his life mattered. He began the arduous journey of discovering what his identity and purpose was beyond sports. After years of research, meditation, workshops, and cross-examination, Darryll found his identity and purpose and began to help others do the same. Darryll is the founder of Second Chance Athletes, a holistic athletic transition service for current, former, and forgotten athletes. He’s an executive pastor of Growth Ministries at Life Church International in Duluth, GA, where he oversees guest experience, small groups, and community outreach. He also partners with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to help athletes better their character, faith, and athletic performance.   About This Episode Darryll shares his incredible life story that all centers on rejection. When he was a child, white students accepted him, but when he tried to connect to his Black peers, he faced rejection. This rejection caused Darryll to embrace all sorts of behaviors that weren’t aligned with his truth and, as such, he lost that connection with himself. Darryll explains how he never dealt with these rejections when he was a kid, instead of pushing himself into sports because that’s where he felt he could be the best version of himself. But when an injury took him off the field, he spiraled into a deep depression that culminated in a suicide attempt. This is one of the biggest reasons Darryll encourages you to process any rejections you get when you get them so you don’t let them stew and build up to be even bigger than they initially were. What Darryll realized was that his life could look successful on the outside, but inside, he was miserable. He was an opioid addict, sold drugs to pay for them, and lived a life that was completely out of alignment with who he was. When Darryll was in the hospital, he felt called to turn to God. Once he accepted this calling, his entire life transformed. As a business mentor, the best advice, for both business and life, Darryll gives is to identify your next yes. Figure out what the next positive step in your life is and how you can do that. He explains why this is the best way to move forward with your life. Darryll also gives some practical mindset shifts that you can start making today to become a successful entrepreneur. When you raise your vibration and think on a higher level, you’re indicating to God that you’re open and willing to go where He wants you to. One of these mindset shifts is to start telling yourself a new story. If you’ve always thought you were not good at something, of course, you’re not good at it! Those thoughts become your reality. Start believing that you ARE good at something and new possibilities will open up for you. Darryll explains the difference between passion and purpose. He shares what his passion is and how this differs from the purpose of his life. We talk about what happens when you figure out your passion and purpose and how you can measure the steps you take by whether or not they’re aligned. What is the one decision you need to make to move your life forward? What’s the one yes you need to make to build your future? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here!   In This Episode What different types of rejection exist Why you need to process your rejection as it happens and not to let it sit and stew How you can be successful on the outside, but miserable on the inside How your life can transform in an instant when you embrace God Why you should identify your next yes Some essential mindset shifts you need to make to be a successful entrepreneur Why you should tell yourself a new story to change your life What the difference between passion and purpose is   Quotes “Rejection, if you do not know how to properly manage it in your life, will push you further into depression, will push you into self-sabotage, will push you into more loss of identity. The time to process rejection is when it first happens. Don’t let it dwell.” (10:47) “Really it’s not about the task that you have to do, it’s about the decision that you need to make. That’s what I call your ‘next yes.’” (25:43) “Your thought life determines your decisions which determines your results.” (33:11) “It does not matter what your job is, just be the best version of you. Give all of you to the world. All of your love, all of your joy, all of your compassion. All of your uniqueness because the world deserves you.” (51:33)   Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts!
