The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/09/binary-system-podcast-424-lower-decks-mayor-of-kingstown-kaos-and-somewhat-careless-snake-people/ Okay in some respects it's just business as usual around here: Kathryn and Elizabeth have both been watching season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, four years after it first came out, that tracks. But Kathryn just watched the first episode of Mayor of Kingstown season 3, only three months late, what the heck? And Elizabeth just watched two episodes of Kaos and that's not even three weeks old, WHAT'S HAPPENING WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE CONSUMING CONTENT IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME? Ahem. We like all of those things, of course, and we also discuss heatwaves, restarting your Netflix account, ridiculously charming smiles, and certain people who got in the news for getting snake bit. (We hope the guy recovers, but man alive that really was the shortest line between Fuck Around and Find Out.) But we do start the episode with the news of James Earl Jones' passing. RIP, James, we hope you know how happy you made all us nerds every time we saw you. This week's outro is a clip from Snake Charmer by Synapsis. Correction: Kathryn says the revelation about Ensign Mariner at the end of Lower Decks season one was surprising. She meant at the end of episode one. (There's a pretty fun reveal at the end of season one too but we won't get into that now...) Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Pandora is the first woman, and the one to ruin everything. Plus, the early people of Athens really had a thing for snakes. CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Think about where you go to find news. Podcasts? WNYC? The New York Times? Facebook? Twitter? Newsletters? Do you want us to stop asking questions? Welcome to the Attention Economy. There is fierce competition for your eyes and ears — (thank you for choosing correctly). Media companies know that a good way to find an audience is to write and speak like the people they're trying to reach. It's the reason Buzzfeed, Vice, Mashable and so many others are popular with Snake People. Identity Media is a big part of why theSkimm — a newsletter that targets Millennial women by rounding up the day's news from Kanye West to Ban Ki-moon — has over 3.5 million subscribers. You might be one of them. This week we talked to theSkimm co-founders Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg about how they go about presenting the news. Identity Media is more than just a business model, it's changing how we consume the news. To try and sort out why this "Skimm" approach to serious stories made her feel a little queasy, Manoush talked to John Herrman. He reports on the media for the New York Times. Together, Manoush and John embark on a mission to answer that age-old question: Do Justin Bieber and Hiroshima belong in the same sentence? Here's a rundown of links to supplement this week's episode: The Skimm issue that mentions President Obama's trip to Japan The New York Times article about the same trip How the Japan Times covered the same trip How Buzzfeed covered it, and then went in a different direction The Politico playbook A silly guide to generation gaps In a way, this whole conversation ties into — you guessed it — our Infomagical project. (Did you catch last week's boot camp?) How we consume media and our goals for reading the news can influence our ability to think and communicate. If you want to get in on the project, it's still around for a limited time. Welcome back to the Conspiracy, where we strive to spread the principles of individual liberty and peaceful interaction. In this special program, we give you a show with one unified theme: that the state is the biggest, most destructive religion in the history of the world. We look at the inauguration of the current President of the US and compare the rituals and beliefs backing the state (in all its forms) to the rituals and beliefs backing various religions. We also look at what happens to those who become apostates to the religion of the state. Ritualism, the state, belief in its beneficence, and its power to destroy non-believers -- they are all covered here, with music by the Psychedelic Furs "Forever Now", The Golden Palominos "The Animal Speaks", Derek Lyn Plastic "Run with Me", The Sons of Hercules "Reason to Live" and "Snake People", The Future of the Left "The Hope that House Built", Midnight Oil "What Goes On", Asian Dub Foundation "Target Practice", The Ramones "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" and The Horrors "Sheena Is a Parasite"!!!!! In episode 10 of "The Perfect 10," we mark our two-month anniversary! Yay! And what better way to do it than with a whole episode devoted to the end of the world?! It opens with the Autistic Psychic of YouTube, who is not accredited. He's just autistic so we assume he knows his stuff. We speak with the "Rain Man" community of Los Angeles aka "The Snake People" of Hollywood Blvd. and the freaks of Venice Beach. Cue: Comedian Earthquake, who discusses the impending earthquake that'll wipe Cali off the face of the planet (or just make it a really cool island separated from the States), as well as real-life knowledgeable person Professor Jim Adansky from Florida. This week's band: Murder by Death! A perfect ending to a doom-filled episode.
Thanks for being a conspirator for freedom. We will plot and plan for a world which acknowledges the primacy of the individual and the moral core of free market interaction. In this program, Gardner Goldsmith becomes one of the FEW media folks who talks about the Executive Order issued by Prez Obama on 3-16 that claims the power to nationalize any product, foodstuff, machine, building, form of energy and person. We're serious, and so is the federal gubment. That, and music from The Cynics and The Sons of Hercules!!! Including: The Cynics: "Turn Me Loose", and the Sons: "Gimme Some", "Borrowed Time", "Used to Be Cool", "Reason to Live", "Snake People", "No, No, No", "Outta Your Head", "Grow Up", and their mighty cover of "Easy Action"! BUY THE SONS and the CYNICS!! BUY!! Be Seeing You!
Every race I've encountered so far has been humanoid, and most of them have been very much like us, so much so that it seemed too coincidental and convenient. This week, that changed very dramatically. I met the Snake People, the race some call the Draconians, and others call demons. The story they had to tell me was chilling, and even more chilling was how I saw myself – and all humanoids – reflected in their massive, gentle, patient, ethical, and almost entirely emotionless consciousnesses, and in the one emotion that pervades their entire culture: loss.
